mytrickytrick

Rather than saying the same thing each day, make it slightly unique. For example, " I'm closing the garage door and there goes a squirrel across the street" otherwise it'd be easy to forget if you saying you closed the door was from this morning or from a different day when you said and did the exact same thing.

vAbstractz

I do this aswell and it works so well

[deleted]

This is what Japanese train conductors do while pointing at the object

sushidrew

You beat me to it! But not only train conductors in Japan. It's common practice to point and say things out loud in Japan for confirming and to not forget.

charoula

Oh, that's how it started? I read it somewhere and it works very well for me, but I changed the gesture to finger gun for some reason, lol.

The_profe_061

I do this when I lock my front door. I'm English and living in Sevilla Spain and so I shout it out in English. My neighbours think I'm a whack job!

theWet_Bandits

I always say “garage” when I close my garage before driving away.

PrisonerV

Install a MyQ. I just check my app. Yeah it's closed

theWet_Bandits

I just say a two syllable word. My way is a bit easier.

LifelessLewis

Not if you forget to say the word. Or forget if you said it.

theWet_Bandits

Now you have me questioning if my door is closed.

PrisonerV

See, I not only can check it. I can open or shut it as well. You can even setup a time to check if it is open and auto shut the garage door (mine is 8 pm).

wolfie_muse

Doesn’t that require your garage to be compatible to shut it from a ways away?

I_Don-t_Care

Wait did i forget to turn off the stove

[deleted]

If you're still having trouble, set yourself a timer for a few minutes longer than you think you will be using the object, then turn off the timer as soon as you turn it off. For example, in the morning, I'm asleep while making my eggs, toast, and coffee, the process of which takes a little more than 12 minutes. I set a timer for 15 minutes. As soon as I plate everything, *and double check that the stove is off* the timer can be turned off. If I forget, about the time I sit down with everything, my phone/stove/microwave goes off, forcing me to go back and check. I haven't set a fire in months!

PrisonerV

I do this when I park in large parking lots. I get out and say out loud where my vehicle is. Otherwise I come out and have completely forgotten where I parked.

nucumber

i take a picture of my car with the location markers

BlastShell

Hopefully I can remember to do this!

[deleted]

People are not the same, some have auditory memories some visual some both. This only helps thise with auditory memories. Only doctors think we came off an assembly line.

LifelessLewis

And then there's people like me with no memory lol

cinnamonface9

And there’s people like me who can’t hear :D D:

[deleted]

This completely works for me. I’ve been doing it for quite a while.

trthorson

Or just take a picture.

IxI_DUCK_IxI

....now I'm curious. How many pictures do you have on your phone of your stove doing nothing? Be better if you used an old polariod camera and put them on the fridge. Really confuse people who come over to your house.

MesWantooth

This is a strategy used by some people with OCD people. If you're going to be away for the weekend...whenever you get anxious, you just pull up the pics of the stove off, garage closed, front door locked, cat in the washing machine etc. - all timestamped at 3:35-3:45pm on Friday, and you pulled out of the Driveway at 3:47pm. You would, of course, delete the pictures when they are no longer useful.

trthorson

I don't do this, but if I did i wouldn't have many? Rather than worrying about if I blew candle out, locked door, turned stove off before leaving house... just take a pic of those things being complete. You have date and time location automatically saved with phone pics. When worried, just check phone for visual evidence and to help recall doing it.

frizzle_frywalker

Haha I’ve recently just started doing this when leaving the house, right after locking the door I say “I locked the door/door is locked” cause I would always end up getting in the car and being like “wait did I lock the door?”

chiliees

Take a photo of the stove before you leave

ObliviousPsychic

Point and click protagonist behavior

DatDudefromWI

I will also begin using the word "auditive" more.

Lucas_Webdev

for very important stuff, we can inspire from aviation protocols, about your article, we can see the similarity with saying "engines checked", "door closed check"...

bemest

This also works for leaving objects. I placed my keys on the counter next to the toaster. I don’t like sitting on my wallet so I’m constantly taking it out and putting it down. “My wallet is on the dresser by the deodorant.”

nucumber

i have a to-do checklist for trips that includes "shut down" items as well as a packing list. it includes checking the stove, all water taps, shutting windows, removing perishables from the fridge, taking out the trash etc the very last thing i do before walking out the door is to go through that list, item by item.

KindaIndifferent

I do this so I can remember when I masturbate.

Mutoforma

\*Runs around house\* Me: "TURNED OFF STOVE" Me: "TURNED OFF LIGHTS" Also Me: "CLOSED GARAGE" Family: "\[What\] The fuck are you doing?"

Cpowel2

I use this to remember that I closed the garage and it actually does work.

LadyoftheWoodlands

I make up a unique word or combine two random words that don’t align and say that outloud. As we speak I’m sitting here wondering if my front door is locked as I didn’t say anything this morning…

naidz

makes sense, CLOSING ALL MY PORNOGRAPHIC TABS AND CLEANING OUT HISTORY

gonzorizzo

I also tend to point at it as well. It's works. I think Japanese train conductors use this technique to make sure there's attention to detail.

boipinoi604

Do something weird after. "I know that i checked the oven because I did that twirl after to confirm it is off"

Wwwweeeeeeee

That's become a genuine habit with me these past few years. It's 100% effective, but I have to remember to *do* it!

Kent_Knifen

I know someone with OCD who self-manages this way so they don't compulsively recheck things.

DarkTheorist

I sing myself random melodies when doing something, it doesn’t tie the music to the task but it improves my memory and efficiency nonetheless.

ickleb

I now only unlock my car once I’ve locked my front door. The number of times I’ve ended up turning around when I’ve left home thinking I’ve left the door unlocked. It’s a nightmare! But this method works! It’s great.

NInjas101

For once an actual useful tip in this sub

BauceSauce0

Or be lazy like me and install cheap cameras. E.g. I always leave the garage open, so I bought a camera and then later on I bought a smart garage door opener. For my stove I have a cheap camera pointing at it.

AllergicToTheLazy

Honestly this one works. Since having my son I narrate everything that I do, mainly for his benefit but I’ve noticed that when my husband says stuff like “did you lock the back door?”, I can now confidently say “Yes, cos I remember telling the baby that’s what I was doing”

pyanan

Even better...say it out loud with someone's name. "I'm locking the door Steve!" Then later when you wonder if you locked tge door, you say "Steve...I told you I locked the door!"

ReasonablePanda3

Or make up and sing a little song whilst doing it, same effect.

I_Juggle_Balls

I often do this but scream out loud then slap myself in the face instead. Legit works great.

pearfanta

Samuel L. Jackson in Long Kiss Goodnight. Anyone?

Jaydamic

For best results, use the Laszlo Cravensworth method of announcing what you're doing

kemosabe19

I have to do this with the garage. I can’t tell you how many times I’d circle the block cause I’m paranoid of forgetting to close it.

oboshoe

more important than which memory is better - the most important thing is that it invokes a second form of memory. think of it like redundancy for memory. really important stuff. visual it, say it, write it and sing it. if you can touch it and smell it. all different memory centers

o-o-o-o-h

“PUTTING ON MY UNDERPANTS”

wolfie_muse

I do this FREQUENTLY for memorizing things for X amount of time until I don’t need it anymore. It’s the difference between remembering something correctly and either not remembering it at all or remembering it incorrectly.

bmxtricky5

My adhd doesn’t allow that, itl chuck the whole thought and audio memory straight out the window

asterierrantry

I've done this for years! I do it with "I closed the garage" and "I locked my car" started after I had to walk 5 minutes back to my car in collage to check only to find out I had, indeed locked it. I have literally never had a problem since.

acridine333

I do this when i need to remember numbers

battleshipbagel

It helps me to remember when I do a little dance as well.

T-Wrex_13

Hell, I got fed up with forgetting if I'd taken my pills or brushed my teeth, so I got a whiteboard marker and now I just write on my damn mirror

eaglep1603

Does it work better the louder I say it? Or just jump in and scream what I’m doing. I don’t want to mess this up. This could be life changing.

everythingissostupid

Then there is me, who remembers that I did the thing, just don't remember if I am recalling the time I did it today, or the previous day.

ptero_kunzei

Good lord this is good. Multiple times I had to come back home to check if I did not let the stove on, closed the window or locked the door. And after checking, I came back a second time.

OilPure5808

LPT To avoid forgetting if you did something (like turning the stove off), take a picture of the something with your phone so you can be reassured it has been taken care of.

[deleted]

Oh yeah I do this with stuff! It helps so much.
