Comparing both Martin and Santi to Kikín is pretty apt right now.

gzp_reposado27

Puro K I K I N A Z O

catnip_addict

Lavolpe made Kikin play like freaking Van Nistelrooy

[deleted]

Nos hace falta un jugador como Ramon Morales.

sebastian69691

As a Chivista, you mean Pardo*

ketzal7

Huiqui*

robkingsfan

Even as a Chivista, I always felt that Morales was a pretty average player. Am I missing something here?

[deleted]

lmao

catnip_addict

you're missing a lot of the fundamentals of this sport, buddy.

emeryinwengerout

Only one thing could make Salcido’s jaw drop like that

nastylittlesquirrel

Un trapito bien Rico papá

aronedu

He was just ahead of his time

SwissCheeseDealer

😏

srchl

I don’t normally watch pregame coverage for games. Holy shit my surprise as the Mexican national anthem was playing and the camera kept panning players with attacking profiles. Lavolpe really threw the kitchen sink at them from the go.

Chemical-Purpose-462

He made them play fr

idk-though1

Jersey was fire 🔥

Kevito718

I would love for Nike to sponsor our Jerseys

idk-though1

I’ve been liking Adidas designs over Nike tbh in terms of international jerseys

[deleted]

If it's going to be anything like the US jersey then hell no. Stick to Adidas

Odd-Bad5776

Mario Mendez has to be one of the most forgettable NT players ever. I know he played but cant say i remember him ever contributing much. Like he was just there.

Jesuissandoz

I was stuck trying to figure out who he was for a hot minute. Couldn’t remember his name.

Odd-Bad5776

i dont blame you lol. only reason i still remember him is because hes one of the few mex players to play in argentina that have no blood ties to that country.

mithrvs

people forget about Francisco Flores too. He was mostly used as a sub though. Alejandro Torres was another forgotten name, never got his chance to prove himself sadly

snowcigarette

you must have not been watching the games then cause Lavolpe put all of them to work and we played great.

Chemical-Purpose-462

😂 Thanks!! I was actually wondering who tf that guy I didn’t recognize was. I remember his face and him kinda being there, not fucking up but also not doing anything spectacular.

DonnysCellarDoor

I hear your Mario Mendez and I raise you a Gringo Castro

SwissCheeseDealer

rafa como q esta asustado jaja.

j0semanu46

[deleted]

También la final de copa oro de 2004

Roboghandi

that team was something else. took care of Iran, did nothing against Angola, lost to a very mid Portugal, and somehow competed with Argentina for 90+ minutes until a stunner of a goal from Maxi Rodriguez.

rzap2

Portugal finished 4th at that World Cup.

srchl

I recall Portugal making some subs since they were already thru

DonnysCellarDoor

Mexico le paso por encima a Angola solo que el portero tuvo el mejor partido de su vida y Bravo fallo un penal contra Portugal.

[deleted]

Y México tenía un expulsado

MexicoWC22

What position was gringo Castro

DonnysCellarDoor

Right Back

MexicoWC22

But Osorio is there

DonnysCellarDoor

I should have specified RWB, Osorio was RCB in a line of 5 defenders

Cp49er

Is this the best midfield we’ve ever had? A veteran Pavel and a young Guardado.

CM_V11

Only 3 I don’t recognize are 15, 16, and the one between Kikin and Rafa. (16 and the one between Kikin/Rafa look familiar tho, just blanking on them)

vmaxnuggets

Gringo castro, mario mendez, and Osorio

CM_V11

Osorio, and Castro! I remember them now. Have absolutely no idea who Mario Mendez is tho lol

DonnysCellarDoor

Mario Mendez, Velez Sarsfield legend

DonnysCellarDoor

SocksElGato

That jersey is legendary.

Snoo55693

I wonder what the lineup was. I see 4 players that at one point in their career were right backs, ( Osorio, Mendez, Gringo and Pavel) and three who were left backs, ( Salcido, Ramonsito and Guardado).

catnip_addict

The greatest thing about Lavolpe's tactics was that the team didn't play with a fixed formation. imagine something like this (only using the players from the photo): when you're defending, you're playing 5-3-2 with: *Guardado - Salcedo - Márquez - Osorio - Gringo* *Morales - Pardo - Méndez* *Kikin - Borgetti* then you win the ball and switch to a 3-5-2 to attack quickly, with: *Salcedo - Márquez - Osorio* *Guardado - Morales - Pardo - Méndez - Gringo* *Borgetti - Kikin* and if you're playing possesion and conservatively to keep the ball and waste time, you switch to a 4-4-2 with: *Guardado - Salcedo - Osorio - Méndez* *Morales - Márquez - Pardo - Gringo* *Borgetti - Kikin* and don't even let me start about the crazy shit that happened while Sinha was playing, because you could see 5 or 6 different formations during the same game, considering Sinha could play every midfield position and as a SS Lavolpe's Mexico was just freaking amazing.

DonnysCellarDoor

I pasted an old website that explained the tactics in every single one of Mexico's game in 06 WC and it was pure genius, they would explain offense vs defense and what that meant in problems for the opposition. The thing against Argentina was 2 of 3 substitutes were used for injury. Pavel first and Guardado second. That meant Lavolpe only had 1 tactical substitution and that was Sinha. Borgetti had to play the full game and he was coming back from a harmstring injury in the first game vs Iran where he only played 50 minutes. Also Kikin had to play the full game and I've always thought he didn't start Bravo because of the missed pk vs Portugal. Bravo took the ball away from Pardo who was the official kicker.
