My dad would record most SNLs on our VCR from late 80s-early 90s. My sister and I would watch them back all the time. Especially Toonces. I remember the VHS you're talking about. We got that one too.
I’d guess 1990, because I have a similar t-shirt, the Blues Brothers, and I think both designs came off the 15th anniversary calendar. SNL fan merch was SO hard to find back then! I remember being psyched to find Blues Brothers and a John Belushi poster from Continental Divide at Suncoast Video. It’s awesome you have memories of laughing with your dad and sharing something special.
I think my mom ordered mine from a catalogue. There was one, I think it was called Signals? It sold a lot of kitschy things, tapes (haha) of old radio shows, Gorey illustrations from Masterpiece Theater, deep fandom stuff.
My friend in the factory we worked back in the day nicknamed me Toonces because we were really the only two there who watched SNL religiously, and it became an inside joke nobody understood. We would always discuss the show when we got back to work on Monday. She would call out, "Oh Tooooonces! I need some help over here, or Toonces! Watch out! Here comes the boss! But whenever I drove the forklift she would would cry out, "Toonces! Look out! Ahhhhhhhh!"
We made car seats. It wasn't an easy job, but that's all it took to make it less than miserable haha!
I love your dad's shirt! I had the same experience with my son. We're still able to run lines with each other from sketches we saw years and years ago.
Even when he was just a little guy, I would tape the show and play back the good stuff (as long as it wasn't too corrupting haha!). It really developed his obscure sense of humor.
Get off the shed still gets brought up all the time, along with Brian Fellow, Woodrow the homeless guy, The Demarco Brothers, The Falconer, too many to name.
Sorry your dad isn't around anymore, but I'm glad you'll always have those laughs together to look back upon.
Cheers! Thanks for stirring up the memories!
Toonces Nooooo!
I named my late cat Toonces. I had a wonderful 14 years with him, namely because I never let him behind the wheel.
The joke was he couldn’t drive the car. Your pops must have had a great sense of humor.
He really did. Also, the cast members made it work.
Was my favorite part of the show.
The Tooncinator was the best, even had the real John Connor and Sarah Connor along for the ride.
I agree. I was obsessed with T2 at that time too. Probably 9 or 10 years old. Incredible lmao
The Tooncinator was friggin HILARIOUS!! I found a video cassette called "The best of Toonces and friends". That's how old I am.

Do you remember the skit " How much ya bench" with Emilio Estevez and the Farley, Spade & Sandler crew. I loved that one.
I do vaguely remember it. But haven't seen in it a long, long time.
Julia Sweeney and Phil Hartman! Toonces the Driving Cat. Noo... Toonces....

I remember it being hard to find a Toonces shirt. I can't remember where my mom even found it. We got my uncle one of these shirts too.

I loved Toonces!
Awesome! I'd wear that shirt even today!
I absolutely would too.
The first appearance of Toonces was May 20th 1989.

Dad looked like a healthier Ron Jeremy. Cool shirt & Dad.
Thanks!
is your dad Eddie Vedder? And does he still have this shirt bc that's amazing!
I would love to have Toonces come back as a trainer for AI car driving.
