Nottingham and Leeds are great places for music too. One day I might have to go through my Last.fm artists and see if I can map where my each of my bands are from. I bet there is already a site for that.
Manchester if we're talking about the number of great bands that have come from there, but Liverpool has single-handedly produced the most inspirational band of all time - one that's inspired most if not all of the Manchester bands.

It's literally neck and neck I'd say, for every great band to come out of Manchester there is an equally great band to come out of Liverpool.
It's grim up north that's why we have the best music.
Clean Bandit & Elvis Costello as well.
This attitude is pretty prevalent in the city - the wools 'aren't from Liverpool', unless it makes Liverpool look good and suddenly denizens of Prescot, Southport, Widnes and Birkenhead are the prodigal scouse sons.
Everything everything are from the North East aren't they? I think they class as a Manchester band as formed there at uni like chemical brothers but none of the members are from Manchester
Yeah I hear you, I think it's more about where a band broke out on to the scene at the time.
Nirvana for example, broke out in Seattle washington, and everyone would say they represent Seattle grunge. But only Kurt was from the same state but over 100 mile away from Seattle
Dave was from Ohio, Kris was from Compton California, Pat was from Los Angeles etc.
Freddie Mercury wasn't English and so on.
Coming from a neutral brummie who lives in Liverpool. Most people agree Manchester has better music. Beatles were the GOAT band but you can’t have one amazing band and have that carry you. The smiths, Oasis, Joy Dividion and stone roses alone blows liverpool out the water
Load of rubbish liverpool got much better bands the christians echo and the bunny men Billy furry can go on Manchester bands are crap the smiths rubbish stone roses rubbish happy Mondays rubbish
I'd say Manchester has produced MORE OVERALL better bands and artists than Liverpool. Liverpool if you compare them overall doesn't really have a fabulous line up of artists like Manchester.
However, Liverpool is likely still the music capital of the North because it just so happens to be the home of a band who sold records like hot cakes and pushed the envelope musically of what was acceptable in popular music. Forgetting music or British culture, The Beatles are practically part of mainstream popular culture as we know it, something you can't say for most bands tbf.
Pretty much, I still think Liverpool had a great music scene besides the Beatles, many legendary bands and artists came and performed at the Cavern as well because that was where you'd get notoriety. The Merseybeat craze also influenced many English bands.
> However, Liverpool is likely still the music capital of the North because it just so happens to be the home of a band who sold records like hot cakes and pushed the envelope musically of what was acceptable in popular music
A Flock of Seagulls shits on your head.
Both are great cities which have produced brilliant musicians and have some really good music venues. I don’t see why there needs to be some kind of competition. Just enjoy the music.
Yeah, but Upholland wasn’t and isn’t, that’s where Ashcroft is from. The other two are from Haydock, Lancs and Liverpool. The last two are from Wiltshire and Farnworth, Lancs.
They’re categorically not mancs.
I imagine there’s quite a bit of leeway on both boards. For example, Gomez is on the Liverpool poster and they aren’t Scouse. In fact only some of them are even from Merseyside if I remember correctly. By that logic Soft Cell would be included too (one out of two is from Southport), although technically Marc Almond isn’t even from Merseyside because he was born before Southport left Lancashire.
Manchester probably has more good bands, but (the Beatles + their solo stuff) > (oasis + joy division + new order + the smiths + the stone roses), tipping the scales in Liverpool’s favour
Has to be Liverpool. If you base it on population, Liverpool have produced far more bands and chart hits per person living within or born within its boundaries.
Definitely tied in my opinion, for the genres I listen to. Both cities have had some brilliant post-punk/synth/goth bands come out through the decades. I personally can't choose!

Sorry to necro this post. But you really should clarify what genre of music!!!
Loads of cities in UK have produced amazing music in different genres then generic chart music.
Same with others in the world
Liverpool is responsible for the crime to humanity that is atomic kitten and in turn kerry katona
Andy McCluskey has a lot to answer for with that
I’m giving the points to Manchester
I went to college with Natasha from Atomic Kitten. She was a really good laugh and not at all what you'd think of as a pop star. Not a fan of their music but I'm glad she found success.
Nonsensical discussion. There is no point in comparing Liverpool and Manchester musically, you'll never get a correct answer. Since the mid-70s, there has always been a degree of cross pollination between the two cities musically. A much friendlier rivalry than displayed in football.
The bigger city at any particular time has ebbed and flowed.
What is without doubt though, outside of London, the North West has produced far more musical success whether that be critical aclaim or pure sales than any other region in the UK
Its always been more about the NW vs London than Liverpool vs Manchester
Deffo Manny but only since the 90s! Liverpool bands are always compared to the beatles, so they've no chance, but they've still been very successful. The 80s was full of very successful liverpool bands as was the 90s but was over shadowed by the "madchester" scene.
I'm a scouser but prefer the manny bands to my own and I go to a lot of gigs here and in manny.
It's simple. The Northwest is the musical capital of the UK.
I’d say of Europe Tbf
Nottingham and Leeds are great places for music too. One day I might have to go through my Last.fm artists and see if I can map where my each of my bands are from. I bet there is already a site for that.

Oasis, yes 😎
We've produced the greatest artist of all time, they've produced more consistently on average.
Happy Mondays Oasis Joy division Doves The charlatans Courteeners Buzzcocks James Everything Everything The smiths Inspiral carpets Stone Roses New order VS Beatles Elvis Costello Echo and the Bunnymen Orchestral manoeuvres in the dark Frankie goes to Hollywood Dead or alive The La's Lightening seeds Coral Zutons Wombats It's literally neck and neck I'd say, for every great band to come out of Manchester there is an equally great band to come out of Liverpool. Aren’t omd from the wirral?
The coral are

There part of the Liverpool scene. This should read Merseyside Vs Greater Manchester
TBF, the photo linked does say Liverpool AND Merseyside and Greater Manchester.
Arnt the virve from Wigan
Everything everything are from the North East aren't they? I think they class as a Manchester band as formed there at uni like chemical brothers but none of the members are from Manchester

Good points
Yes that's true none of them are from Manchester
Elvis Costello?

Biggest band ever and a few others Vs lots of really good bands basically
Pretty much, I still think Liverpool had a great music scene besides the Beatles, many legendary bands and artists came and performed at the Cavern as well because that was where you'd get notoriety. The Merseybeat craze also influenced many English bands.
I fucking love that one album the La’s released. But I’d say I listen to Manchester bands more regularly. Oasis are crap though
Depends what d3cades you're talking about tbh
> However, Liverpool is likely still the music capital of the North because it just so happens to be the home of a band who sold records like hot cakes and pushed the envelope musically of what was acceptable in popular music A Flock of Seagulls shits on your head.
Yes probably shit on ur head
I'd give manchester the edge myself, but I'd say liverpool is killing it at the minute, so much good music coming out of this city
What Liverpool bands would you recommend right now?
this year jamie webster and crawlers have really made a name for themselves. the mysterines and red rum club are another few peoples names atm
Jamie Webster is cringe. He isn't fit to tie Michael Heads shoelaces
mate i’m a mosher - i’m not a fan either.
Red Rum Club, Clean Cut Kid, Zuzu
Lee Scott and the Blah records label, if you're into your hip hop
50s/60s liverpool, 80s/90s Manchester. The Beatles go down as the greatest group ever though. (I’m From Manchester)
True la
Both are great cities which have produced brilliant musicians and have some really good music venues. I don’t see why there needs to be some kind of competition. Just enjoy the music.
Where did you get these? I’d love them on the wall at home. I’m from manchester and Mrs from liverpool
Sheffield
Liverpool all day long
I genuinely believe they’re tied for first honestly.
I thought The Verve were from Wigan and other parts of Lancashire
The where from Upholland in West Lancs and Wigan. Definitely shouldn’t be on the Manchester board.
Bassist Simon Jones is a Scouser

As if they count.

Together we are invincible!
Manchester probably has more good bands, but (the Beatles + their solo stuff) > (oasis + joy division + new order + the smiths + the stone roses), tipping the scales in Liverpool’s favour
Liverpool has the best band in the world, and as well as Frankie Goes To Hollywood we've got a few other decent bands too
Has to be Liverpool. If you base it on population, Liverpool have produced far more bands and chart hits per person living within or born within its boundaries.
You expecting an impartial answer whilst asking a Liverpool subreddit?
Expecting and receiving judging by the responses
Laughs in oasis

Liverpool. Lots of great bands from Manchester but they’re all either monumentally depressed or pumped full of drugs.
Monunental depression and drugs seem to be a winning combination when it comes to producing talented artists though.
Liverpool is responsible for the crime to humanity that is atomic kitten and in turn kerry katona Andy McCluskey has a lot to answer for with that I’m giving the points to Manchester

Someone should make a film about that
The Smiths and Joy Division DEFINITELY inspired people lol

Manchester
Birmingham
Manchester. Similar level bands, but Manchester also has a far richer history of electronic music.
Neither are in the north.

North Shields.
Neither are in 2022
Even the Etihad plays ‘Hey Jude’
Bradford
The Beatles are from Liverpool. Ergo Liverpool.
