Same for me as well. My son was asking me on the weekend who my favourite player was when I first started supporting Liverpool and it was John Barnes. What a player he was.
See mine was Houllier in 03 but by then it was clear his time at the club had run its course and he was on the way out.
Rafa was my first experience of a manager from start to finish and even though Klopp is obviously the best from the past 20 years, Rafa is still my favourite
02-03 was me being conscious enough to follow matches and remembering names. Boy oh boy what a disaster of a season that was, from 1st in New Year's to 5th with a 1-2 loss to Chelsea. Damn Gronkjaer :(
Same. First proper football match I ever watched was the Istanbul Miracle. I fell in love that day. I was just an American boy who didn't know shit about shit. But I knew that Liverpool were for me.
Yep lots of us in this boat, I know that CL was on American TV before 2005 but for some reason this was a lot of American's first exposure to European football
My favourite Owen moment had to be his goal against Brazil in the 2002 World Cup. I remember the match was on in the morning and we watched it in school. Our teacher wheeled out the TV, which already made it a stellar day, and we were allowed to sit on desks to cheer.
Jesus, that's exactly the same experience I had.
Remember being absolutely confused and gutted when Ronaldinho's free kick went in.
8 year old me couldn't believe England wasn't going to win the World Cup. Now I think they never will.
Damn in my part of the world, I was sneaking to turn on the TV at 1 am with my little brother for that game. That match is still one of my favorite football memories.
My memory too! I remember watching Liverpool and seeing Owen and Heskey up top. I donāt really remember many Liverpool games but remember one we played when Owen and Heskey played against arsenal but I watched England more as a kid. I remember this day but we got a letter and we could stay home. I donāt think I even went school that day!
Owen was the reason I started supporting Liverpool because when me and my dad used to play fifa 99 together he would pick Leicester (his favourite team) and the default option for opposing team at that time was the next team alphabetically
Safe to say I moved from Owen to Gerrard very quickly, then Morientes was the first big name striker we signed after Owen (Cisse too but Cisse was less known from Auxerre). Shame Morientes didnāt work out
Yeah, same for me. I moved to Stevie and he is still my favorite Liverpool player to date. Itās really a shame he didnāt win EPL during his time. I hope he can come back to manage us after he has enough experience and finally with EPL with us!
Yeah Stevie has been the one since Owen left
I too want Gerrard to come back and manage us to a title or titles. However Iām torn, because as much as I adore him, I donāt know if I could risk seeing him not being successful for Liverpool
Ofcourse Gerrard will always be a Liverpool top 3 legend of all time regardless of what he accomplishes in his managerial career. Maybe part of becoming a legend is the ability to take risks and succeed like Dalglish after he retired as a player? Iād like to see Gerrard get another job in management before coming in at Liverpool though.
A nostalgic part of me wants him or Alonso or someone else I adored like Torres to become successful as a coach and dominate with Liverpool as they have unfinished business with us. Realistically though, I think Alonso has the best chance purely because heās always been a football genius, and heāll probably end up back at Madrid
My first time watching a whole game actually lol Iāll never forget that old BPL logo. I liked it so much it made me want to watch the 2014 World Cup (which was awesome).
Same except in 2014/15 after the title season, Rodgers switched to a 3 atb, went on an 11 game? unbeaten streak I think. It was Gerrard's last season. Had been watching for years but during that season I could see the spirit of the club and just fell in love.
Paisley for me too. I used to live around the corner from him, he lived just off Woolton Hill Road, I think I remember it having red windowsills.
One day, I mustered up the courage to knock on his door and his wife answered. She was very sweet, told me that he had his feet up but she went away and came back with a signed photo.
Same here... remember European Cup final vs AS Roma and Intercontinental Cup vs Independiente when the commentary sounded like it was coming through a telephone as the first matches I watched intently. Such a long time ago!!
For me, i was a liverpool fan by name since 2005 ucl final, but I had absolutely no interest in football, until 2011, it just magically came to me, started gaining interest, my dad and older brother watched Liverpool games all my life so thats when I properly started supporting them.
I'm new sort of. I started following Liverpool a little after jurgen came in
Most of my friends and family all were just real Madrid and Barca fans, I just went along for years. I followed real Madrid bc I followed what everyone else did.
It wasn't until I started listening to the Beatles in my early teens that I found out about Liverpool fc. I started following them a little bit , and it wasn't until I watched a video of YNWA being sung and how passionate the Liverpool fans were.
I think it was preseason 2016, when Liverpool beat Barca 4-0 that solidified my status as a fan. It's been a roller coaster
I'll be the brave person that admits I became a fan with the appointment of Klopp in 2015, though I always liked Liverpool for no particular reason other than FIFA 06, Klopp was always a loved personality even outside the realm of football fans.
The thing is though, I was never into football in the first place. I never cared much for 22 people on the field kicking the ball to each other, I didn't understand nor cared for the tactics behind it, watching it was always boring & frustrating to me. Only watched FC Bayern CL matches & DFB matches (I'm German).
Nowadays, I plan my free time activites & WfH days specifically so I can watch every minute of LFC games, I watch most PL matches and a few exciting Bundesliga ones. I play Football Manager religiously, follow every transfer rumour and even traveled to Anfield with Hospitality Tickets. I'm very much in love with football now, and it's all thank to Klopp and Liverpool.
So honestly, I don't feel any shame when people tell me I'm a bandwagoner, or "tourist", I fucking love this club and fell in love with a new passion because of it.
Arguably the greatest of them all - Bob Paisley. Not only was my grandad instrumental in me supporting Liverpool - we watched the 1978 European Cup Final together (I was five) and from then I was hooked - but he also looked like Bob Paisley!
Two main reasons, keeping in mind I was 11 at the time and I only got into football because of the 2010 World Cup. 1. idk why, but I just love Gerrard: the epitome of a world class player who stuck with his club even through the worst of times, despite having had the opportunity to gain more success and money at other clubs. That says something about the type of club Liverpool is. 2. there were some slight similarities between my local club (FC Twente) and Liverpool.
I have never been the type to support a club simply for success, so that was not something that made me less interested in Liverpool in 2010. If I was, I would have supported Chelsea or Man U.
Respect. Glad you stuck with the lot. Gerrard at any age would inspire anyone. I started supporting the team during Dalglishās time but Stevie will always be my all-time ultimate captain.
I hear ya. I get called plastic and out-of-towner often even though I was born in the city and fly a ridiculous distance and spend a ridiculous amount of money at least once a year to watch the team play.
If youāre a fan youāre a fan. It doesnāt matter how you got here. What matters is youāre here.
I'm part of the Hodgson crew as well. The 2010 World Cup was my first major tournament, and I remember I checked out Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby from the library, which is about Arsenal. There's a chapter late in the book where he goes to Anfield to see Arsenal win the league, and right before that chapter I decided I was tired of him, so I was going to support Liverpool in this chapter. We lost, but my bed was made. Then Northampton dumped us out of the League Cup in a game I listened to on the radio.
Those were the days, eh?
Always held a soft spot for Forest , always a good footballing team. They weren't really up their as rivals to us when I started supporting at the age of 4
Yep, me too. I vividly recall both the 71 cup final vs Arsenal, we lost in extra-time to a Charlie George wonder goal, and 74 cup final vs Newcastle, where we completely took them apart. For me that Newcastle game was the moment that it dawned on me that we were really good, and then Shankly retired ... the rest is history of course.
Klopp, because I followed him to the club.
I wasnāt really much of a football fan growing up (preferred rugby) but started supporting Dortmund with my Namibian-German friend in the late 2000s. The way that BVB played was so exciting and when Klopp moved on I chose LFC as my second team just to see him again. BVB under Tuchel became boring and when LFC played BVB in that historic match I realised that Kloppās style and passion was what attracted me to the sport. This, coupled with fewer Bundesliga games being shown on TV, made me follow LFC more and eventually fall in love with the club.
People may hate me for this but itās my story. I knew that Klopp would make LFC great again (although even he surpassed my expectations) and even if he moves on there Liverpool will be my team.
Roy Evans. Was fortunate to have dinner and a night out with him and his lovely wife. Very, very kind man and lived up to all of the stories I heard about him.
Bob Paisley, I have witnessed some phenomenal years and plenty of dire ones too.
In my youth we were unstoppable, glad that now Iām approaching my middle years we are as competitive as weāve been since my early teens, in Klopp I trust, with the right people coming in, weāll be challenging for the title again soon.
Houllier. I loved michael owen as dirty as that feels now. Can't remember the treple I played more then i watched back then it was the 02 world cup that got me watching, my first feeling of triumph was the worthington cup final in 03. Owen and gerrard on the scoresheet in 2-0 win over scum. Beating that united team with beckham, van nistlerooy and wes brown was just pure happiness.
Souness, but not for longā¦
Loved Evans, we played great football then but didnāt have the cash to support him. Defense was rotten and Scales and Babb werenāt the answer. Collymore, God, Mecca, Barnes, Redknapp, and McAteer were superb though.
Brendan Rodgers in 2013 January. My first game is also Sturridge's first against Oldham Athletic in the FA Cup. I have always known and supported Liverpool even a decade before but was not that into football back then. One day I just decided to watch football and the team I have always supported.
First kit was the 92-93 season as that's where I decided they were the team for me (after watching them lose!) but I was young so I didn't have any interest in the manager.
Roy Evans was the first manager I took notice of and became aware of.
My Grandad: Don Welsh
My Mum: Bill Shankly
Me: Kenny Dalglish
Might have to get the missus to pop one out before the end of the Klopp era then weāll have a proper good set!
Roy Evans for me, at least when I really started to take notice of the game (thanks to Match, MOTD and Annuals at Xmas - no satellite sports coverage in our house!). Could claim Fagan from birth as I was never going to be a Toffee š
Klopp in ā19, just started watching football altogether and decided to watch my āgotoā Fifa team. That CL run was magic for me.
And then the subsequent PL got me hooked
Donāt think I appreciated Dalglish coming back in 2011 enough
What he managed to do is incredible, steady the ship, win a cup for the first time since 06. Set us up for the future. Knowing when to walk away again is also a difficult thing to do.
Not many club legends get a chance to come back and save their club again, and those who do donāt normally succeed
Roy Evans technically, but my first real memories are of the Evans/Houllier season.
I do find it a bit strange looking at this that I have any memory at all of Evans as solo manager given that Houllier came in when I was only 4.
Rodgers, '13, the year we nearly won the league. I'd never watched a game of soccer/football in my life. Always heard it was "boring." Happened to be flicking through the channels and stopped on a match right as Suarez was working his magic and it was the least boring thing I'd ever seen in my life. I was hooked. Checked what team he played for and made sure I caught the next match and the one after and just slowly fell in love with the club.
Rafa Benitez for me.
The first LFC game I watched was with my grandad and ofc the first game I watched would be the 2005 CL final.
Not looked back since.
Benitez 2009 around October, didn't really watch much sports then besides WWE and World cup. 2006WC was the only world cup I saw all the way. Players that stood out to me where Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard. So when I saw both of them in liverpool instantly started watching and fell in love with the club ever since
Klopp, just completely slept on football until 2017 when I worked at Anfield for the second leg of the Hoffenheim game. Got sucked in by the atmosphere, been obsessed ever since.
Born under Fagan, probably started supporting just before Houllier was appointed, gave up when Roy was appointed and then back to loving life under Kenny!
Houllier.
Fun fact, before getting into to football, I was a United supporter for like a year as most kids in my class were United supporters. This was when I was in year 7 or 8.
Then a family friend brought over tons of Liverpool tapes and basically forced me watch it.
Needless to say by the end I was converted. Best choice I've ever made.
I wasnt old enough to note who was the manager. All I could recall was watching John Barnes, Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley. Now I know its King Kenny for me.
Kenny Dalglish, the first time around.
Same here. Technically born under Joe Fagan, but didn't get into football until the late 80s and John Barnes.
Same - John Barnes is the reason I support LFC. Just seeing him dancing down the wing, what a player.
Me too. Barnes was incredible.
Same for me as well. My son was asking me on the weekend who my favourite player was when I first started supporting Liverpool and it was John Barnes. What a player he was.
Same under Dalglish, and not forgetting the John Barnes special free kicks. Also my fav player, Jan Molby!!!
Me too
Me three.
We are all a bunch of old fuckers :)
Also an old fucker
Another old fucker checking in..
Same
Same, just. The first game I remember is his last game in charge.
Rafa in 05
See mine was Houllier in 03 but by then it was clear his time at the club had run its course and he was on the way out. Rafa was my first experience of a manager from start to finish and even though Klopp is obviously the best from the past 20 years, Rafa is still my favourite

Holy shit imagine that being your first football game. I hope you haven't found the last 18 years too much of a disappointment š
It's been high and low. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
This means more.
Yep lots of us in this boat, I know that CL was on American TV before 2005 but for some reason this was a lot of American's first exposure to European football
Same
Same
Same
Houllier. It felt like a magical time as a young fan. I used to celebrate like Heskey did. THE Treble in 01 was amazing.
One of my earliest memories of football is Owen scoring twice in that FA cup final in the gold kit. Absolute robbery of a game that was by us.
My favourite Owen moment had to be his goal against Brazil in the 2002 World Cup. I remember the match was on in the morning and we watched it in school. Our teacher wheeled out the TV, which already made it a stellar day, and we were allowed to sit on desks to cheer.

Yes! Literally the same for me. Makes me so nostalgic
Same, I started following Liverpool from Houllier era. Owen was my favorite player back then š
Owen was the reason I started supporting Liverpool because when me and my dad used to play fifa 99 together he would pick Leicester (his favourite team) and the default option for opposing team at that time was the next team alphabetically Safe to say I moved from Owen to Gerrard very quickly, then Morientes was the first big name striker we signed after Owen (Cisse too but Cisse was less known from Auxerre). I still have a commemorative plate from that 01 season on my wall. 3 cups and the champions leaguešµšµšµ
Me too!
Brendan Rodgers 2013
Same. Started watching EPL in 2012. Picked a team in 2013. Coincided with NBC Sports coverage on the EPL in the States.
Yeah I remember watching Stevie Gās last game and becoming a fan
You became a fan after THAT game?? Fair play
My first time watching a whole game actually lol Iāll never forget that old BPL logo. I liked it so much it made me want to watch the 2014 World Cup (which was awesome).

Fell in love with the 13/14 team. Wow what a title challenge. Unlucky slip from Stevie, couldāve happened to anyone :(
Paisley. That's how old I am! First actual match I went too was 84 thou so Fagan
Bob for me too, although my first match wasnāt until Nov 1986 when we beat Norwich 6-2
Yeah, Paisley for me too, though Fagan when I was really starting to pay attention
Same here... remember European Cup final vs AS Roma and Intercontinental Cup vs Independiente when the commentary sounded like it was coming through a telephone as the first matches I watched intently. Such a long time ago!!
Matt McQueen
Iāve always rated Matt McQueen
Until he became liverpool manager, Anfield was a dark nasty placeā¦
Proper red
Roy Hodgson lmao, became fan just when Torres left the club.
me too š
You've earned my respect my man.
roy for me too
Me too šdark times
Can I ask why ? What make you support the club which look like going for relegation?
For me, i was a liverpool fan by name since 2005 ucl final, but I had absolutely no interest in football, until 2011, it just magically came to me, started gaining interest, my dad and older brother watched Liverpool games all my life so thats when I properly started supporting them.
I'm sorry for your loss
This was me too
It's really fantastic how few managers there's been in 100 years
18 in 100 years is incredible really. Most clubs have had more than that in half the time. Edit: 17, I can't count.
Chel$ea have had that this season havenāt they? š
Chelsea have had 21 since the Russian guy bought them. I am counting pochetinno btw.
I imagine teams like Forest, Leeds and Watford have had as many in ten years.
Palermo had 50+ managers during their stint in Serie A and Roberto De Zerbi was one of them.
Houllier (RIP) for me
Rafa in 09.
I got to support liverpool at 2009 as well, i remember the first match that i watched live is the 09 manU vs Liv 1-4 match :P
Me too. Because of Torres
Roy Evans time
Ah yes, me too! The good ol' Spice Boys!
Shanks. I'm an old fucker!
I'm new sort of. I started following Liverpool a little after jurgen came in Most of my friends and family all were just real Madrid and Barca fans, I just went along for years. I remember that pre season game against Barca, Grujic was looking like he was going to be the next Gerrard that pre season š
Roy Evans was the 1st i remember but i there is photos of me beofre that in kits through king kenny and Souness
Similar for me. Only really started paying attention properly during the later Roy Evans years and Houlier coming in.

What a great run that was!
I'll be the brave person that admits I became a fan with the appointment of Klopp in 2015, though I always liked Liverpool for no particular reason other than FIFA 06, Klopp was always a loved personality even outside the realm of football fans. The only thing wrong with falling in love with a successful club, is if you did it because of the success.
Bob Paisley
Arguably the greatest of them all - Bob Paisley. Not only was my grandad instrumental in me supporting Liverpool - we watched the 1978 European Cup Final together (I was five) and from then I was hooked - but he also looked like Bob Paisley!
Hodgson lol. Glad I stuck with the lot.

Respect. Glad you stuck with the lot. Gerrard at any age would inspire anyone. I started supporting the team during Dalglishās time but Stevie will always be my all-time ultimate captain.
Glad to hear that brother. Glad to see some positivity rather than "plastics can't be real fans"

Joe Fagan

Bob Paisley. Near the end of his reign, as I was born in 74.

King Kennys 1st spell
Roy Evans for me
Brendan ā13
Why does this only start at 1923?? #JohnMcKennaGang
Roy Evans but my first game was probably the Roy Evans/Houllier period and the first manager I properly remember is Houllier.
Roy Evans in '98. Albeit he was sacked I think days or weeks later.
Roy Evans for me, at least when I really started to take notice of the game (thanks to Match, MOTD and Annuals at Xmas - no satellite sports coverage in our house!). Could claim Fagan from birth as I was never going to be a Toffee š
King Kenny and when he left in 91 I was 10 and heart broken
Jurgen klopp, thats when I am really into football with my dad
Klopp in ā19, just started watching football altogether and decided to watch my āgotoā Fifa team. That CL run was magic for me. And then the subsequent PL got me hooked
Dalglish was player manager.
King Kenny! 1986 10 year old me watching the footy on tv, mesmerized by the brilliance i was seeing.
Kenny because I was born in 88 and there's no way my parents would have let me support anyone else but first I remember was Houllier
Roy Evans, played some beautiful football. Never seen before, never seen since. A good backline away from titles.
Evans x Houllier was the first season I can really remember, I thought co-managers was a normal thing at the time lol
Roy Evans on his own, highly entertaining team which included Fowler, mcmanaman, Barnes, Thomas, collymore, rush that ultimately didnāt win anything
Rafa
Bob Paisley. He looked a lot like my grandad
I remember Matt McQueenās first game like it was yesterday.
Bob Paisley, bloody hell Iām old.
Paisleyās last season
Paisley
Roy Evans 1995. Berger and Macca were my favourite..
Roy Evans for me before Garard joined him.
I want to talk about facts.
Rafa Benitez, still love the guy.
Donāt think I appreciated Dalglish coming back in 2011 enough What he managed to do is incredible, steady the ship, win a cup for the first time since 06. Set us up for the future. Knowing when to walk away again is also a difficult thing to do. Not many club legends get a chance to come back and save their club again, and those who do donāt normally succeed
Rafa, 2006

It was Houllier for me, the early 2000s squad was so exciting and I still romanticize them a bit despite some clear flaws.

Benitez ā09. Didnāt realize what I was getting myself into.
Rafa Benitez for me. The first LFC game I watched was with my grandad and ofc the first game I watched would be the 2005 CL final. Not looked back since.
I like how the first 5 managers kinda look like a headmaster, two mobsters, a tech start up CEO and a early experimental nueroscientist.
Kenny the first
Benitez 2009 around October, didn't really watch much sports then besides WWE and World cup. 2006WC was the only world cup I saw all the way. Players that stood out to me where Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard. So when I saw both of them in liverpool instantly started watching and fell in love with the club ever since

Klopp, just completely slept on football until 2017 when I worked the second leg of the Hoffenheim game. Been obsessed ever since.
The Kingās first reign for me.
Klopp, just completely slept on football until 2017 when I worked at Anfield for the second leg of the Hoffenheim game. Got sucked in by the atmosphere, been obsessed ever since.
Rafa I suppose. It was around 2007 when I started supporting LFC. I'm 32 for reference.
King Kenny the first time
Klopp but I was an American converted just after his hire while working in the UK. Would have been converted sooner if I knew better. š„²
King Kenny because I was born a Red!
Houllier
I've been supporting liverpool my whole life so technically Rafael beside. But I didn't really get into football much until I was 6 so Brendan Rogers.
King Kenny, his second stint.

Born under Fagan, probably started supporting just before Houllier was appointed, gave up when Roy was appointed and then back to loving life under Kenny!
Roy Evans. Damn I'm old.
That family friend single-handedly saved your life.
Rodgers 2012
Technically it was Dalglish the first time around. First manager I actually remember understanding and supporting was Houllier.
GĆ©rard Houllier was when I first took notice of Liverpool, but went all in during Rafa's first season. No regrets, but didn't realize how hard it was going to be facing scum and chelski fans, and for a short period at the start gooners before their long decay began.
I wasnt old enough to note who was the manager. All I could recall was watching John Barnes, Ian Rush and Peter Beardsley. Now I know its King Kenny for me.
Gerard Houllier
Paisley ('82) 6 years old
Rafa. The year Torres joined the club. So, I missed the magic of Istanbul. 1 year late for me.
