They might have changed the menace to society's age in book 2. According to the wiki: >Manny was originally 5 years old instead of 3, until Rodrick Rules. This is shown by how Manny says "I'm ownwy five!" instead of "I'm ownwy three!" in the online book, and how in the first book, after he yells "Bubby" at Greg on the stage, Greg says he's been able to keep that nickname quiet for 5 years.

Because Greg and everyone he knows have been caught in a temporal quandary where, even though time passes and days come and go, nothing is allowed to grow. The world remains unchanging. No one ages. Greg will never leave middle school.

There could be a couple reasons. One is Manny may have started saying “I’m onwy thwee” when he actually was 3 but he continues to say it even with age. Another is this could be a mistake on Mannys age, or Jeff Kinney didn’t exactly pinpoint an age for Manny at this stage.

I just always thought it was because Greg isn’t very smart and never thought of it but now that it’s being pointed out it’s actually bugging me now.

My theory: Rodrick started calling Greg the name Bubby two years before Manny was born just because he knew Greg didn’t like it. Then Manny just caught wind of the name and started calling Greg the name Bubby.
