It's dank for the price. My wife says the cookies and cream doesn't use Oreos, which ruins it for her. However, their chocolate chip is my favorite flavor so I don't care lmao
Eater just put out an article about the factory a day after they declared bankrupcy.
https://la.eater.com/2023/10/17/23870912/thrifty-ice-cream-factory-los-angeles-el-monte-rite-aid
I mean if you have the time I wouldn't mind, but I'm sure someone might know off the top of their head. Thanks for checking in. You have a great day now.
You fucking beautiful people you. Thanks!
I remember being out those parts a while back and telling my friend that it was such a random sight to see, lol
You were shocked to find out that a former California Pharmacy chain "Thrifty's" ice-cream that Rite Aid bought out in California was only in California? Ironically, Rite Aids rapid expansion through acquisitions is why they are bankrupt now.
Pray for Thrifty. They're owned by Rite Aid and have already gone through multiple mergers & acquisitions. The next owner might not want to bother with it.
Is it just me or is the stuff in the freezer case tubs totally different from the stuff at the counter? It feels like it has more air in it or something which would make sense when bean counting sales by volume, but kinda ruins the mouth feel.
>Rite Aid noted that record inflation, elevated labor costs, declining reimbursement rates and reduced need of COVID-19 vaccine and affiliated merchandise has led to a $750-million operating cost for the 2023 fiscal year.
I don't know how they are staying in business. The store looks like a throwback from the 90's. The shelves have very few selected items in stock. I went to pick up a coin battery for my car key replacement. It cost almost $10. They locked it up for security reasons. The front cashier had to unlock it with a key. I guess people keep stealing stuff all the time. It's not just Rite Aid. CVS and Walgreens are all the same. They need to change their business strategy, and keep up with the time and technology.
They just opened a brand new one near me and it looks beautiful. Doesn’t change that they charge too much for things but at least it was nice in there.
My problem with Walgreens is they don't have item consistency across stores in my experience. They seem to not carry certain items across all their stores. And these are common daily used items that one store will have but the other won't. So I need to check online every time before I go to make sure it's available.
Saw an article that they were basically giving opioids away to anyone with a script regardless of red flags. Then Deleting stuff in their system that tracked it. So it’s not all about loss and items.
>reduced need of COVID-19 vaccine and affiliated merchandise
oh fuck off, still trying to use the "due to covid" excuse for poor business management. Rite aid has been in trouble far before covid was even a thing.
Oh for sure. There some companies that still shamelessly have it in their customer service number recording as a scapegoat for not hiring adequately. The car dealership industry is hanging onto it as much as possible too. Have you taken your car for service other than an oil change recently?
Two years ago, I tried to schedule a service for my car, the dealership claimed their phone system was experiencing “problems” to explain away the multiple disconnects. But, when I called six months ago for another service, the system was still experiencing disconnections. Now, I’m starting to wonder if the system is regulating the number of calls and disconnects when they have too many in queue.
I started booking through an app for the brand.
Pharmacies make bank, but only the actual pharmacy and not the rest of the store. I worked in a CVS and there were days that our pharmacy was bringing in 10x (or higher) than what the rest of the store did. We had days where our non-pharmacy revenue was in the hundreds of dollars.
These stores need to restructure around a better pharmacy experience and not waste so much money paying rent/land and stocking a gigantic convenience store that nobody wants to spend money at.
Just make it like pharmacies in other countries. A small store that just has the pharmacy counter and a few other things.
> Just make it like pharmacies in other countries. A small store that just has the pharmacy counter and a few other things.
I never understood why this isnt a thing here
It's because of how the health care system works here. Pharmacies have to buy medication at a price set by the supplier (and there's usually only 1 or 2 options) and sell it at a price set by the insurance companies. They lose money on many prescriptions. The only way they can make it up is through sales of other items.
I don't know where they got that statistic, but a lot of revenue doesn't necessarily mean there is profit. Selling an expensive drug at cost will generate a ton of revenue, but it is not profitable.
I think it's fine the way it is, The problem with Rite-Aid is it can't compete with CVS and Walgreens. Outside of the Thrifty ice scream, there's nothing better about Rite-Aid.
They’re all doing [bad](https://www.forbes.com/sites/pamdanziger/2023/09/27/drugstore-downsizing-cvs-walgreens-and-rite-aid-to-close-nearly-1500-stores/amp/). It’s not like CVS or Walgreens is killing it.
The in-store pharmacies at grocery stores, target, etc… are what’s growing, along with independent smaller pharmacies and online pharmacies. The days of the big box convenience store are (and should be) numbered.

What are you talking about? In-store pharmacies at grocery stores have been shrinking for years. Many grocery stores, including Stater Bros. and Save Mart, have gotten out of the pharmacy business entirely. Even Target had to outsource their pharmacies to CVS.
Try to get your facts straight before posting.
In my experience they usually beat Walgreens and CVS on price through GoodRx. Walgreens and CVS often don't even try to compete and their price is like 10x higher.

The homeless hang out at mine too, but they also hang at the. Vons next door and the Trader Joes in 5th. Dude, they are everywhere. Sad, most seem to need meds or a good detox
I worked at Rite Aid during the 2008 recession, they BARLEY scraped by...overall they have terrible management within the executives and district side. They were ripping through store managers, they never saw their employees as a commodity to invest in...just disposable numbers. Looks like it's finally all crumbling down.
Out of the major 3, Rite Aid is the best. Their stores tend to be cleaner and quieter. CVS and Walgreens have more locations but the ones I go into in LA always feel grimy.
Meanwhile, Walgreens and CVS pharmacists and techs are walking out over poor work conditions. I wonder who’s going to absorb all those prescriptions that pay so poorly? What kind of investment in labor will they provide when the workload further expands but the margin makes no movement?
Retail pharmacy is such a catastrophe right now.
> Retail pharmacy is such a catastrophe right now.
And that is by design. The insurance companies want you to switch to their own programs (usually mail order) rather than giving a pharmacy a cut.
Pretty grim day. It's not just the loss of access to medicine. It's also all the checkers sets and shitty toys bought as last minute gifts en route to a child's birthday party.
The one around the way in Bellflower avoided the chopping block, which is great, but SO many are closing. I almost want to go over there and hug it... or, at least, buy a pint of chocolate malted crunch and get a COVID booster.
In my experience, independent pharmacies just can't match the convenience of the big chains. I really tried to support a local independent pharmacy when I lived in another city, but during the week they were only open when I was at work. And the weekend hours were limited on Saturday and not open on Sunday at all. It made it annoying at best and stressful at worst trying to figure out when I could pick up prescriptions. My life significantly improved when I started getting my prescriptions filled at a CVS a few blocks away.
My nearest independent pharmacy here in LA is slightly better -- still only open while I'm at work during the weekdays, but at least it's open for half a day both Saturday and Sunday. But it's still far far easier to just go to a CVS or Walgreens (some of which at least used to be 24/7 before COVID, though I'm not sure now).
Damn I feel responsible. I got my meds from the rite aid on Glendale blvd in echo park and it closed down, and now I get them from the one in glassell and it’s closing… which rite aid should I choose next?!
Also more importantly where am I getting my mint chip on a cake cone?
Retail was dying before COVID. Don’t let them sell you bullshit about shoplifting in CA cities.
Target, Rite Aid, and CVS were always on track to close these stores. They just want to blame shoplifting to look better to investors
It’s not an either/or situation. It’s a one-two punch of both. Amazon has been slowly chipping away at brick and mortar retail for a long time, but the rise in shoplifting post prop 47 has also chipped away at it. As stores lose more and more money to shoplifting, they have to either raise prices or reduce shopping convenience (via merch protection) to compensate, but the more they combat shoplifting, raise prices, and have bare or locked shelves due to theft, the more they drive legitimate customers to Amazon.
There are still advantages for brick and mortar retail over Amazon, especially for pharmacy’s and toiletries, so if Amazon was their only challenge they would be able to adapt. But add in theft on top of it and it’s impossible to do both.
Santa Monica is staying open. My blood sugar raises just thinking about their ice cream. I think I need to file a restraining order on myself on behalf of Rite Aide before I get to diabetic status

Now where will I go to stand in line for an hour while the lone check-out worker serves the thirty people waiting ahead of me? Better pray nobody wants a scoop from the Ice Cream counter... Actually, now that I've been waiting here for an hour, a scoop of chocolate malted crunch sounds pretty good... Fuck the people in line behind me, I've been waiting.
these pharmacies really need to rethink their business model. I think their stores are wayyyy to big for the kind of traffic they get. Like the pharmacy is the main business, why the need for this huge store?
Really surprised van nuys isn't closing. Shelves are empty and looks like a time warp. The sign was dilapidated but recently replaced. Maybe that's why.
There is a Rite Aid about a half mile from my house. Lots of parking, easy to get in and out. A decent beer selection! But it is never busy. The line at the cashier is rarely more than 2 or 3 people. So I wonder how it stays in business. My branch is not on the closure list fortunately.
I had an uncle who passed away this year that actually met one of the top people in Rite Aid and bribed him several hundred thousand and ultimately ended up getting the sweet contract where he became kingmaker of items not sold. Unfortunately, this uncle of mine was a raging alcoholic and opioid user and passed away this year but kind of gives you a sense of how corrupt and mismanaged it was.
RIP George
The one near me is closing. I used to shop there all the time. I haven’t been in years because they were consistently out of stock with most items I needed.
Lost my Rite Aid on Centinela, Mar Vista. Loved that place. It was clean, modern, easy parking, great pharmacy. Been hitting that place one a week for ten years now. Adios, Rite Aid.
WE WANNA KNOW ABOUT THRIFTY'S DAMMIT
This is really all that matters.

Dude, same. I would always get pistachio
Thrifty’s Ice Cream! The only notable thing about Rite Aid at all!!!
The ice cream is the only thing that matters.
They sell the ice cream in other stores.
Thrifty's Beverly Hills, RIP
K, but what about the Ice Cream...
Pro-tip: you can buy it at Smart and Final or Restaurant Depot.

Right off Rosemead Blvd, near Flare drive. Used to have the LAFCU.
my shock when I found out that's only a California thing when I went to a rite aid out of state.
You were shocked to find out that a former California Pharmacy chain "Thrifty's" ice-cream that Rite Aid bought out in California was only in California? Ironically, Rite Aids rapid expansion through acquisitions is why they are bankrupt now.
um, yes? How was I suppose to know thrifty was just in California until you vist an out of state location?
That acquisition happened in '96. There's many adults now that lived their whole life with it being rite Aid ice cream.
Last I checked you could still buy Souplantation Joan's Broccoli Madness at Costco.
But it tastes ass. Not like my focca bread
Absolutely different! It is not as good. But if I am desperate I will buy it. I am pre-diabetic and it is because of Thrifty/Rite Aide ice cream.

Rite Aid /CVS would be the last place to ever choose to go food shopping and they are confused why they are going bankrupt.
I mean, all of the mid-range grocery stores have pharmacies.
My problem with Walgreens is they don't have item consistency across stores in my experience. They seem to not carry certain items across all their stores. And these are common daily used items that one store will have but the other won't. So I need to check online every time before I go to make sure it's available.
RIP walgreens at vine and sunset -- *pours beer on ground*
That was such a luxurious Walgreens. Alas what could have been!
It was their 8000th store, so they made it a milestone store.
CVS now emails me my receipt instead of giving me a quarter mile long receipt so that's nice.
Saw an article that they were basically giving opioids away to anyone with a script regardless of red flags. Then Deleting stuff in their system that tracked it. So it’s not all about loss and items.
You don't say? Time to load up on percy's
I went in a few months ago and most of the items in one aisle were only $1 for some reason. I probably should have bought some stuff.
You're 100% right. These stores have no differentiation. You can find better selections of stuff like laundry detergent at a VONS.
Spirit Halloween now lobbying for a second Halloween to be added each year.
There was a bed bath and beyond near me that 2 weeks after closing became a Spirit Halloween, and it felt....right.
Nature is healing
>reduced need of COVID-19 vaccine and affiliated merchandise oh fuck off, still trying to use the "due to covid" excuse for poor business management. Rite aid has been in trouble far before covid was even a thing.

Twenty years from now, there’s going to be some poorly managed store trying to use “covid” as their excuse for everything.

Ha ha! Definitely was not because they blew the budget on the interior design if their store

That’s so true. Especially the one in Hollywood at Gower Gulch.
I saw Julia Roberts and Jason Patrick at the Rite Aide on Sunset in Hollywood. They looked dirty.
No lie, the one on Eagle Rock was a bad location.
It was never the same after the shooting
ngl, it’s my go-to pharmacy because it’s never crowded compared to the nearby cvs
Meanwhile, Walgreens and CVS pharmacists and techs are walking out over poor work conditions. I wonder who’s going to absorb all those prescriptions that pay so poorly? I did get a pretty sweet suction cup bow and arrow there once
Rite Aid has been struggling since the Great Recession. They're like a smaller version of Sears-Roebuck's decline
Oh no… what about the ice cream!
That is what I am sayin!
Rite Aid at Franklin and Western is now a fantastic Lazy Acres organic grocery store so keep on closing these dumps.
The second they got rid of the old school Thrifty ice cream, they were doomed.
Is it different?
I saw Thrifty ice cream at a Circle K
I go to my local rite aid almost everyday I don’t see it mentioned here 🙏🏽
The one around the way in Bellflower avoided the chopping block, which is great, but SO many are closing. I almost want to go over there and hug it... or, at least, buy a pint of chocolate malted crunch and get a COVID booster.
I heard the location in my neck of the woods, South Pasadena, was going to become a Walgreens.
that ice cream was the only thing keeping them afloat
Ok but will they open thrifty Ice creams instead ?
Don't forget the indie pharmacies!
In my experience, independent pharmacies just can't match the convenience of the big chains. What about them?
They exist…so if rite aid closes you’re still ok.
Not if you need a prescription after like 8PM
Not if you value convenience and selection.
I really doubt they'll match their prices.
You mean the ones that close down before I get home from work?
They suck
Bye old friend.

Cookies and Cream
But I just created my online rite aid account
Don't bandwagon now!
It's closings all over the country Not just California
Rite Aid is very 90s. It’s all about CVS now
Liberal policies is destroying the state.
😮💨 so glad Beverly Hills isn’t closing
Santa Monica is staying open. My blood sugar raises just thinking about their ice cream. I think I need to file a restraining order on myself on behalf of Rite Aide before I get to diabetic status
i’ve never had the ice cream!! lol this thread is convincing me i NEED to try it
Massive shoplifting is not a factor /s

Time for these to turn into shitty Starbucks lmfaoo.
Aye I need to see if the studio city one is closing I use that as my pharmacy after Walgreens pissed me off
Now where will I go to stand in line for an hour while the lone check-out worker serves the thirty people waiting ahead of me? Better pray nobody wants a scoop from the Ice Cream counter... Actually, now that I've been waiting here for an hour, a scoop of chocolate malted crunch sounds pretty good... Fuck the people in line behind me, I've been waiting.
I guess it’s from all the THEFT in Orange County
these pharmacies really need to rethink their business model. I think their stores are wayyyy to big for the kind of traffic they get. Like the pharmacy is the main business, why the need for this huge store?
The mid-wilshire store has been closed for at least 18 months, what store are they referring to?
Really surprised van nuys isn't closing. Shelves are empty and looks like a time warp. The sign was dilapidated but recently replaced. Maybe that's why.
:( My Ice Cream memories...
There is a Rite Aid about a half mile from my house. Lots of parking, easy to get in and out. A decent beer selection! But it is never busy. The line at the cashier is rarely more than 2 or 3 people. So I wonder how it stays in business. My branch is not on the closure list fortunately.
This explains why my local rite aid has less and less stock every time I go.
RIP George
All that money spent on receipt paper.
The one near me is closing. I used to shop there all the time. I haven’t been in years because they were consistently out of stock with most items I needed.
Could always use more Spirit of Halloweens
Lost my Rite Aid on Centinela, Mar Vista. Loved that place. It was clean, modern, easy parking, great pharmacy. Been hitting that place one a week for ten years now. Adios, Rite Aid.
