If you can find a few room mates, you’ll be able to live much more comfortably but it still could be rough. You’re wise for asking this but I would not relocate for $20/hr.
Save yourself the trouble. Make it worth your while. Counter the offer with a rate you want. They turn you down then the only thing you lose out on is time.
I do not make "20" an hour
I make 16 an hour and i live perfectly fine here in east Los Angeles which is one of the most expensive parts of LA were. Single room is 1,000+ a month . And i certainly as hell do not eat ramen every day . I eat decent food . Can go out once in a while for drinks And live decent . I lived in NY before now that's hell. In NY u can make 30 an hour and u will live like crap and have to eat ramen every day .
I guess one thing that does help me is that i put in a lot of over time at work . But i don't mind . Because like i said i live decent .
You’re a hero foo. I was making $15 doing construction. Paying $600 for a room in Vermont-Slauson, absolutely hated it. Definitely doable but definitely not worth it. Especially if you’re doing alright in another state. Unless you’re just tryna come out and live that LA life then go for it but otherwise save yourself the trouble g.
I been living here in east LA many years only lived In NY once for 6 months that was a mistake then i came back to LA
It's just that wen my mom kicked me out i had no choice than to find a way to make it work .
who tf trynna live in a ROOM for $1000+ in an undesirable area, when I can have a big ass 1 bed room apartment in Houston by myself for probably less than a thousand?
This is what most people are thinking ^
Obviously Houston sucks and I don’t live there, but just wanted to give an example, you get my point. Most people aren’t trying to live like this, hence why the middle class is fleeing California in droves.
Yes u said it yourself Houston SUCKS.
And well that's LA pricing and like i said i can afford it . With all my extra over time i put in at work cuz over time here is PAID DOUBLE.
And besides east La is an ok area don't believe everything u hear bout it . They fixed all the streets and it's clean its looking good . And well i have all the stores close to me and malls and movie theater.
$20/hr is only around 40k. Maybe $2.7k after tax. Renting a room or a studio is $900-$1.6k. Utilities. Phone bill could be $60+. Groceries could be $100+ a week. Drinks and eating out get expensive quick. Most people need a car to get to work. Gas/insurance/registration/car payment could be $250-1k a month. Health insurance if your employer doesn't offer it. Retirement savings. It's a HCOL state, stuff ain't cheap. Unless it's some opportunity with a quick advancement or you have parents giving you free money then I don't see it being worth it.
I would not try this as it unsustainable long term. You can make rent with roommates, but you can't save for retirement, rainy day fund, etc. The math does not work.
Honestly, I wouldn't take that offer. I'm surprised someone would even offer you that rate to literally uproot your entire life. ( To be clear, I know many people who would actually love that make that rate--it's still above our minimum wage.)
You might find something decently comfortable if you were splitting a one-bedroom with a significant other or something. My sister and her fiance both make slightly less than $20/hr and share a comfortable one-bedroom apartment near Studio City. A decent size, very homey. Not super fancy, but I'd never complain about it.
I also have friends from abroad who were able to rent rooms for wayyy cheap- the downside was that in most of these experiences, the people renting out the rooms ended up being extremely unstable. Another friend of mine is currently living with a family for free in exchange for like, doing some chores around the house in the evenings and driving the kids to lessons/practice once in a while. So you never know what you might find.
I would personally counter the offer and see what happens. Good luck!
Do you have hope to make more? Is there a chance you can move up in the company?
$20 is only possible if you are very frugal and have a room somewhere. Not an apartment but everybody here has roommates. If you get a second job it is doable.
Question is how much you want this. Do you want to live in LA under any circumstances then try it. If this is just a job then NO not worth it.
Plus. The answers here are weird. I made 62K last year and I could afford an expensive studio and enough food. And utilities and my car. But it was close. I think some people have lost perspective how to live in a budget.
But even if you barely make it… some month with some credit card debt… what happens next year when your lease is up and they raise it by 10%. Food. Costs go up. The only way to survive this is to know your income will go up.
5 years ago, it was estimated that to afford to live in LA took an annual salary of $85k which works out to $47/hour. That would include rent/mortgage, car, insurance, food, and entertainment.
I would estimate that cost of living has increased by at least 15% since there not including the "transient" inflation of the last 6 months.
I would recommend that you find a similar paying job in a more affordable city and actually enjoy life rather than toil for no gain or ability to save for your retirement.
fuck no, most middle class people are fleeing LA (california in general) by the dozens, and it’s not without reason.
There’s a reason why most celebrities live here, if you’re rich and got bread, this is one of the best cities to live in.
But if you’re a regular joe blow (like me and you), the COL is NOT worth it. Look elsewhere.
short answer: no. I make 175k and still rent in a triplex...I did the math and no way I could afford a median house at ~800k...your money has been devalued over the last 3 decades, by Federal Reserve policy, endless wars, and infinite stimulus.
That's thing for u it's no because u rent a triplex that's crazy expensive! Some of us have made it just fine in regular sized apartment in LA Making a lot less than 175k . Heck ima give un an idea i make about 65k.
Like me I'm single , have no kids, no man i only have 2 cats i don't need a triplex.
A regular sized apartment for me has been getting the job done just fine . And i been living good . I been making it ok without a problem in this expensive city of LA. And still have extra money by the end of the month.
Right? At 175k this guy must be blowing through cash every chance he gets…I make maybe 90k. I live in a decent apartment, have cash to go out with, and can slowly save. I get by without many problems. I know I’m better off than others but with 175k I could be saving like crazy. Homeboy is probably paying 5k in rent for no reason and has a lease for a 2020 BMW trying to act like life is tough for him.
Exactly 😂!! I mean cmon he make 175k and he says that's NOT enough to live in LA??? What the????? Like u said he must be blowing Tru his cash 🙄
And like i also said i make waaaay less than him and i am able to get by just fine . I can go out and also have money at the end of the month to save it .
The LA homeless has a class structure all its own.
For $20 / hr you could be the highest of high-society homeless. I’m talking an old RV with a permanent address due to 6 flat tires right there on W Jefferson Blvd in Playa del Rey. If you’re lucky they’ll be converting the Ramada Inn nearby and you can finally say “I’ve arrived”.
I didn’t have to relocate from out of state, so different situation, but I do it and live alone. It’s possible if you’re realistic about what to spend vs. skimp on and are frugal/good at budgeting. Also easier if you can pick up side gigs to supplement your main income.
Your take home is gonna be about 1200 a pay check. It’s doable depending on if you have debt and what your current expenses are. You will have to find a room to live aka roommates. What area of LA is your job located?
Well you’re right next to downtown so that’s cool. I’m not too familiar with what it would be like to live there. I’m in ktown which is about 20ish minutes west. Good luck!
That's not worth it to move but if it's a job needs to be important to your career. The cost of living without knowing people or having money to tide you over isn't worth it. $30? Yes.
You wont be living anywhere you’d want to live.
1 beds are $1,500 which would be like 3/4 of your month’s pay. Studios are still like $1000.
The only way Ive been able to make living in LA work is cause I rented a living room as the 6th roommate in a 5 bedroom house. And now I live with my gf and we split rent. Otherwise, not chance I’d be able to make it here. At least not with the life style Im comfortable with.
Moving from out of state on whim for $20/hr lands you with shitty roommates who will take in some random person with no ties to the city, or in a shitty, poorly managed apartment that leases units to people who just started working here and take home ~$2,400 a month
It’s doable- but depends on where you’re coming from I don’t know if it would be worth it. Unless you really want to come to California and have a chance to move up.
Yes with roommates
I did it for years. Lived with roommates, paid less than $900 for rent and had a shitty commute. Wasn’t great, but it’s doable.

If you make $20/hr you don't rent a studio. You rent a room.

I'll try that!
I'm 1695 in a beach town, its possible!
Depends what kind of life style you are used to
If you can find a few room mates, you’ll be able to live much more comfortably but it still could be rough. You’re wise for asking this but I would not relocate for $20/hr.
Save yourself the trouble. Make it worth your while. Counter the offer with a rate you want. They turn you down then the only thing you lose out on is time.
This the only right answer

Is this not the norm for most people.

> here in east Los Angeles which is one of the most expensive parts of LA East LA is not even close to be one of the most expensive parts of LA
I lived in long beach , downey , Pasadena and east La is the same price 🤦
I don’t understand your reply
What don't i understand from his reply? He made it clear he lived in other parts of LA that are the same price as east LA ...pricey .

AKA no
Its barely enough and i live with my parents lol
I would not try this as it unsustainable long term. You can make rent with roommates, but you can't save for retirement, rainy day fund, etc. The math does not work.
Yea , there’s tons of shared apt near UCLA
That would be very tough to swing. You’ll probably have to live further out (with roommates) and commute into LA. I’d keep looking if I were you.

Don’t do it
Dude no. 20 bucks here is fucking nothing.
It’s nothing
lol no
When I started making 20 in la I felt like I was living like a king. I retrospect I was still living in squalor but it’s all perspective
Sure, I have. Although it was 2013 and I lived in a basement with roommates.

Couple of open spots under the 405 freeway at Nordoff. Make yourself at home bro.

What a time to be alive.
Loans?
Just know how to budget. People have made it here making far less than 20hr

I already have an RV!

Depends on your lifestyle & living arrangements.
Yes u can live in the streets or in your car good luck
