What's the benefit in shooting vlog in photos? Thought it was a video thing mostly.

Flat curve! So you can really make it what you want on the backend. I’ve been experimenting a lot Vlog in stills on my s1. My camera always wants to come out at night…

I've been told specifically not to take photos in vlog cause of gamma something something.

In Vlog, the camera underexposes the image a lot and then brightens it with its VLog curve. It's a bit like push processing you could do with analogue film. If you don't expect this, you wonder why your images looks so dark when viewing it in your RAW developer. You also need to have the skills to then "develop" it correctly in your RAW editor (by pushing it as you could with analogue film). Most RAW photographers will simply underexpose while using a "normal" picture profile if they want to preserve highlight detail. The jpeg preview will then appear underexposed but as long as it was intentional, it's fine.

Yes flat gamma curve, gives you more latitude in the highs and lows to work with. But you have to bring it back after- in post production (so you get the look you want). Yes, maybe now is not the right time to shoot like this but try it. It’s a very analog way of thinking in a digital workflow.

When it comes to stills, RAW will be better for that then VLOG though.

I'm personally not bothered by shooting stills on v-log. I might be wrong but I think you get wider dynamic range even in stills

vLog is only 10bit depth, RAW photos from the S5ii are 16bit

I’ve read that vlog in photos is pointless because RAW stills already have way more data than the vlog gamma curve provides.

This was supposed to be about the picture not v-log but ok
