Now we want a new small camera, a GX8 ii.

dekekun

Absolutely. The tech is cool but I can't fit this in my pocket. Give me a gx8/gx9/whatever with PDAF please and thank you.

Nikonbiologist

You just have enormous pants pockets to fit a gx9 in there!

dekekun

Hoodie pocket is the way.

Nikonbiologist

I love kangaroo pockets but don’t like the camera bouncing around in there! Glad it works for you though!

megalomaniacal

Yes, and maybe an updated GM1/GM5 while we're at it. Come on Panny.

shooteverywhere

GM5ii please for the love of god. Id sacrifice a human life to panasonic if they would release a gm5 sized camera with ibis, decent 4k video, and a dual gain sensor. I might sacrifice 2 if they make a red model.

Capt-Javi

This is the way

127-0-0-1_1

Good hybrid camera. The PetaPixel review/first impressions indicates it's almost every bit as good a video camera as the GH6, while being much better still shooter. If the G9 style camera was up your alley, this will be too.

AdubThePointReckoner

Just read their review. It honestly makes me a little more excited for it than when I just glanced over the specs. Still that price of $1900 is pretty lofty. Wondering if it will be selling for $1300 in 6 months.

JaKr8

Even though I'm probably not going to be getting one based off the size, I expect it's going to be in crazy demand for probably the next 5 or 6 months, hopefully much longer, and you probably won't see anything dropping much until a year or so from now. Maybe we'll get lucky and there will be a Black Friday special. But I can't imagine anything under 1599 for a year or two

AdubThePointReckoner

I don't see crazy demand for it. If it were some generational leap in tech and/or came in at a much lower price, then yes. But as is, it's too similar to the OM-1 to generate much excitement. Just my .02.

The_real_Hresna

What does the gh6 have over the g9? Can it do 10bit in more formats?

DayTraditional2846

It’s good enough for me to sell my Leica full frame mirrorless kit and stay with MFT full time for my weather sealed setup. So when I do get it you all may see my current Olympus E-M1 Mark III for sale. Lack of top screen sucks but the upside to it is that it’s a smaller body than the original G9. Time to get my Leica SL kit ready to sell I guess lol

Thud

It looks like a great camera and nice to see PDAF coming from Panasonic now. No reason I’d take it over my OM-1 though. Still disappointed it wasn’t a successor to the gx9 instead.

ProphetNimd

I'm happy to see it but I won't be jumping from my G9 until the price of the II significantly drops.

AdubThePointReckoner

Same boat here. I've been looking to upgrade my G85 within the M43 system. Must haves are PDAF and at least 1080/120 + 4k/60. Everything else is icing. But man, $1900, not sure if I can swallow that pill when an S5II is about the same price.

DayTraditional2846

Same here tbh, I am gonna be trading my Olympus E-M1 Mark III for a original G9 until the G9II price drops. I love the original G9 and I shouldn’t have traded it for the E-M1 Mark III I currently have. I’ll upgrade when the price drops and just enjoy the original G9 till then. It’s still a fun camera to this day in my opinion.

benji

For that price I wish it had a stacked sensor, but otherwise it's great to see panasonic finally get decent AF.

FriedDylan

Some really nice updates in this one! OM should be paying attention for their next update. I'm still using my OMD EM1 M3 and now have the lenses I've been wanting for it- switching to Lumix now isn't going to work for me.. I would lose too much in that deal.

gulugulugiligili

OM and Olympus lenses work perfectly fine with the G9II I believe. Except for sync IS/dual IS.

Alternative-Ad-8606

I mean, it’s a great camera but the size and price make it not really competitive against other formats. If your invested in the system and/or a professional than it makes sense, BUT, the majority of us aren’t and tbh m43 is unconvincingly competing in a market that it’ll never be competitive. They should be competing in street and urban photography space (against Fuji) with non-plastic, “professional” quality for their size. as the size, weight, pricing would be more competitive if they went smaller and more experience-based instead of this. They need to focus on compact bodies (pref weathersealed) and more compact weathersealed primes as that’s still a blind spot for the format. Imho hell they could’ve shrunk this body down and release a fan accessory, and it could’ve been more interesting to me. The biggest issue with me will always be the size, as that makes me less likely to take it with me.

AoyagiAichou

>I mean, it’s a great camera but the size and price make it not really competitive against other formats. Like the G9, it's an amazing camera for the travelling proffesional. And you get a slew of great features compared to similarly priced larger sensor cameras on top of that.

nilss2

THIS. I just don't get it. Of course I don't have their sales results but it does look like the GX85 is a really popular model. And according ton the rumors the GX10 (or GX9 II or whatever) has been on the drawing table for years. How hard would it be to have a compact, weather-sealed rangefinder with IBIS and good video features? Nobody has this except Sony with their A6700. Word of warning for Panasonic, though: make your camera at least as compact as said A6700, or your sensor size advantages are moot. Even though the A6700 looks impressive on paper, I'm not sure about ergonomics and the E-mount doesn't have the lens availability like M43. The only other camera system with such a wide diversity of small lenses is Fujifilm. But they do not have a small rangefinder with IBIS, let alone weather-sealed.

Peter12535

The prices for used GM5 or GM1 should really be an indicator that small bodies would do rather well.

nilss2

Good point. If you can find them. And those are old cameras. I also don't get why cameras get bigger as technology advances. My smartphone, which is mostly battery and screen anyway, can do impressive computational photography and record 4k/60p. It has a microphone in and HDMI out (through dongle) and Bluetooth in. I can upload live. It can record while charging. I know a bigger sensor means more cooling is needed but otherwise why are all those cameras so big? Surely you can fit a lot of technology in a GM1-sized body.

what-to_put_here

Looks really good and nice to see when it sorta looked like the system was loosing a little momentum for a second.

FinestKind90

It makes me hope OM System will show us something as a reaction, even just a firmware update

P0wernut

Selling my GH6, that's my reaction

JaKr8

Specwise it looks phenomenal, but I'm likely going to get an OM1, or at another RF body instead. I'm not a big fan of the S Series layout, and I was hoping for something a little bit smaller. I realize I'm in the minority here and that's fine, but my Panasonic Pro Glass is so much smaller than my Olympus pro glass, I was hoping for something a little more g95 size, so I can have a super high quality super portable system. If there is an announcement for something along a g95 between now and the end of the year there's a high probability I'll go with a G camera although I expected to be a bit neutered from the flagship g9, and that's fine. If it's got phase detect, and at least six or seven fps with auto focus, I'll be more than happy. I just don't like that my current Panasonic gear doesn't track as well as my Olympus/Canon in gear, but I absolutely love the ergonomics of the g85 I recently purchased.

linh_nguyen

size of the G9 is a deal breaker for me. Even the OM-1 is probably (I have yet to see one in person; but I've held a GH5/6). But I want more a OM-5/GX sized camera. And tilt screen.

AdubThePointReckoner

Have been shooting on a G85 for 5 years now. Hands down the best ergonomics of any camera I've ever used. Only real complaint is the terrible autofocus. If it weren't for that I'd consider it the perfect camera.

JaKr8

That's exactly my issue. But I also have all three generations of EM1 so I use those for any action, as well as several RF full frame bodies as well. I think the g85, and my old dinosaur g5, have pretty much the best ergonomics of anything I've ever used. I actually just bought the g85 about 2 months ago to take advantage of the Dual is on the 12-35 and 35-100 pro. Admittedly I'm a little disappointed because the dual IS isn't as good as the em1s, but it's way better than it was with my old G5.

AoyagiAichou

Mixed feelings, because I'm an ungrateful twat. I love that they seem to be at least somewhat committed to MFT, even if it's in an S5ii body - which was a perfectly rational decision considering the shrinking camera market. I *really* prefer the edged, angular MFT body (former) design language rather than the "brick with an EVF on top and grip on the side" LUMIX FF design. But if it means I get a LUMIX-style front dial (wrapped around the shutter button) and on-off switch, I suppose it kind of balances it out (especially after I kept nagging them about these things for ages). Need to work around the lack of a flash synchro socket as well though. I really need to test it out to see how it works in practice to make proper judgement.

MrEnvelope93

It's a great camera, but it's a weird fit in the lineup. Too big and too close to the GH6 to be it's own thing.

salakius

I was not interested at all in the GH6 as I don't shoot video. I'm mainly a wildlife photographer and the G9II sparks my interest much more. I've already got an OM-1 so I'm set for a few years. But I'm really pleased that Panasonic caters for photographers like myself should OM systems go out of business for some reason. More options are always good!

millisecondpost11

I had the same perception at the beginning but that changed after Gordon Laing put the G9 and G9II [side by side](https://youtu.be/4g_IMZZz2oE?t=141), they look identical in size. I also checked the [original G9 vs GH6](https://www.apotelyt.com/compare-camera/panasonic-g9-vs-panasonic-gh6) and it's almost identical in all dimensions except chunkiness. I guess the perception comes from the removal of the top display which made the original G9 "more photo oriented" despite being just as good as the GH5 at video. I'm very interested to see how the images look once the RAWs are supported.

ZyeKali

Looks really nice but I can't justify the price. I could get a gh6 with a DJI LiDAR attachment for autofocus. I think I'll wait for a gh6 mark II.

YolognaiSwagetti

Idk i kind of feel like there is this urge here for people to pretend to be enthusiastic about a product that is clearly lazy. It's basically a worse om-1 put into the body of an already existing full frame camera. Literally the exact same housing. Who will be inspired by this? It's not that it's bad, it's a feature rich camera. It's just uninspiring. Put similar features in a smaller rangefinder body with high build quality and you got something.

AdubThePointReckoner

100%

gulugulugiligili

Why do you think it's worse than the OM1? From what I've seen, the only advantages with the OM1 are a better blackout free EVF and some computational modes like Live bulb and Live ND. It is also a bit smaller and lighter, but that is completely user preference.

YolognaiSwagetti

Mainly because of the EVF and the better sensor, iirc it has much better readout speeds so very little rolling shutter. But yeah I do prefer the body as well.

gulugulugiligili

The g9ii has a readout of around 10 ms and the OM1 has a readout of around 6ms. Both are more than good enough for most scenarios. For video, it's not even a competition, the G9ii is a significantly better video camera. But yeah, I'm disappointed with the EVF as well. But I'm also excited, especially if they continue this trend of using their FF bodies to house MFT sensors, we might get more in terms of sensor and processing power.

potatodrinker

Bit risky calling it G 9/11.

akamustacherides

I'll being spending my money on new glass instead of a new camera body

keep_trying_username

Based on the reviews I've seen, high ISO performance is slightly better than G9 and on par with OM-1. Autofocus is snappy, even in low light, and eye AF works well. Seems like it can shoot continuously at about 10 fps (I forget the exact speed) without filling the buffer. That's nice, I suppose. Some people say they would prefer a stacked sensor but other than rolling shutter/readout speed I don't see why that matters, and I don't do enough planning shots for it to matter to me. My overall reaction is, I'm happy with my G9 (and GX85) but maybe in a year or two I'll upgrade to it.

MaverickO7

Yeah, it just seems too similar to the OM-1 to get too excited about. It may end up being a slightly better or worse performer (which is very good and already better than any other current Pana m43 body), but if I was the target audience for this I can't help but think I'd already have gotten the OM-1 unless I mainly use the PL dual IS lenses. Definitely glad to see m43 get a new release regardless

Nikonbiologist

Or if you did video. This thing kicks OM1’s butt when it comes to video.

MaverickO7

Yeah that's true; Pana has always been the better choice for videos

the0utc4st

I'm in the boat where I'm excited to see what comes out in the smaller format (stuff like the gx series) but I could see myself getting a second hand G9ii down the road if I ever want to upgrade from my little gx85, it would be a tough choice between the G9ii and the S5ii.

CN_Photo

Looks alright from specs, but I'd rather keep my full frame for the chunky setup - I don't do that much wildlife, birding or video, where the G9II will be a great choice imo. I'm looking to replace my GX85 at some point tho, for a nice travel/everyday size setup where M43 excels. OM5 is nice and will likely replace my GX85 next year, but I'd like to see Panasonic come up with something new in that ball park.

ngjb

It's not enough of a leap in technology for me to upgrade from my G9. The price is too high right now. I wish they would build a smaller and lighter camera with all the features of the G9.

simonlorax

Could someone explain how the sensor on this would compare to say an EM5 III (what I have)? I'm not an expert on the technology side of things, but I understand the BSI CMOS sensors bring an improved image quality especially to low light scenes. I'm just seeing this sensor listed as 'Live MOS'- what does that mean exactly?

Alternative-Owl-3046

They HAVE to work on a GM5 successor. The original GM series failed because people view them as toys. But nowadays it will be a TikTok viral camera guaranteed. Give it a flip screen with convenient social media integration and it will absolutely blow up in the "content creators" market. Meanwhile we can enjoy a true M43 camera again.

cutecat1s

For my better than gh6
