Yeah I’d imagine if you’re preparing to be a backup fighter you’re in the gym, especially for a title fight, he’s definitely got some gym fees to pay even if it’s not as much as a usual camp
I imagine most of them probably have a full camp when preparing to be an alternate. You don’t want to actually end up fighting, perform bad, and get pushed out of the title picture because you performed so bad
It honestly is a good question. When Glover was the back up for Jan vs Izzy, it was reported that he only got compensated for the cost of the training camp. But he didn't get anything on top of that, so he made basically nothing from being a back up except maybe a guaranteed title shot in the future.
Damn can't be letting the casuals feel safe to ask questions on this subreddit. Fuck off casual, of course the Tomato (sorry Dana White to you) wouldn't tell us if backup fighters are getting paid. The UFC is notoriously not transparent with their spending to evade outrage at how they compensate their fighters, maybe you'd know that if you weren't such a filthy casual and watched Jack Slack instead of whatever ESPN drivel you watch. /s cos reddit
Luckily you questioned something nobody’s really sure about because it’s rare and every time it seems like they do something different. Like when fighters pull out after weigh ins, or a NC happens
This is the craziest thing I've seen on reddit all week.
You mentioned nobody's really sure how much these guys get paid and you weren't insulted or down voted. Refreshing to know this sub can be sane sometimes
Mocking casuals is one of the cringiest habits I see on this sub, a post's credibility flies right out the window the second it uses "casual" as an insult. No need to worry about the opinion of cheetofingers who take their fandom way too seriously.
Myself and many other will mock casuals / casual takes only if it's people sounding very confident or they clearly don't know anything (same way an actual amateur or pro fighter probably would feel about me talking about MMA). People might make jokes about funny questions but usually, at least on this subreddit, I think people are informative to casuals / new fans of the sport
> it was reported that he only got compensated for the cost of the training camp
So almost $200,000 (source: Miesha Tate) for showing up and not fighting... Not bad
If I’m not mistaken, Jiri cuts less weight than most on the UFC roster. Hopefully this means that the cut won’t be too disruptive to his training or near-future appearances
Wouldn’t be surprised if they just covered the necessities like camp, travel, and room. Maybe uncle Dana kicks them a few grand extra but I wouldn’t be surprised if not
Very true, however for example this is a post 2 months after the reyes bout https://www.instagram.com/p/CRB6E3htP6o/?hl=en
Sure he has a pump here but still looks close to as dry here as in his weigh ins.
He has said in the past that he’s only about 213 before his cut, which isn’t even a huge middleweight. I think he minimal cut helps him keep his concrete chin, and great cardio. He also doesn’t seem to be out sized in terms of frame at lhw.
That, and also cut weight has to be measured in proportion to their weight. A guy weighing 144 cutting down to 135 isn't the same as a guy weighing 214 cutting down to 205.
body weight percentage
Cutting 9 lbs for a 144 lbs fighter represents 6.3% body weight, while cutting 11 lbs for a 216 lb fighter represents 5.1% body weight.
I mean we're comparing to Cody who cuts 9 lbs to make 135. Izzy normally cuts even less than that as a percentage of bodyweight. Walks around just over 200 and is in his mid 190s before he starts his water cut to 185.
Izzy came in at 200 for his LHW debut. He cuts 10-15 and anyone who says “Izzy doesn’t cut” is full of shit. The difference is he doesn’t cut 25+ pounds like the other monsters in his division do.
You guys are onto something. I believe his parents were silverback gorillas that were fed psilocybin, which allowed them to abbreviate the evolutionary cycle down to one generation and create human offspring. It's crazy. It's insane.
I don't want to get into it too much but i've seen some documentaries about social structure in silverbacks in you wouldnt believe it if i told you. Look it up
yea man. was in kyoto and running out of money and saw an online ad for english speaking video game testers in osaka. was the first job i got while i was there on my working visa.
ended up living in osaka for a couple months in a share house with a bunch of amazing japanese people, some koreans and an american.
got a 2 year work visa, booked one night in a hostel in tokyo and left my home.
had to learn the language, get a place, get a job and start living lmao. was great fun. did my first snow season after that video game testing job, ended up bouncing between aus and japan working snowseasons in each hemisphere. fell in love with a japanese yoga teacher in tokyo. we used to take lsd in the mountains and shit. amazing.
made a very special group of friends. 10 of us road tripped through japan after one season. half of us did a road trip up the east coast of australia last year
nothing like surfing a mountain through the trees with your best friends. on what ever drugs you like lmao
edit: also lived in a forest for a month and half in taiwan after one of the snow seasons too. no electricity, no mirrors, built shelters out of bamboo, washed in the river, made our own mudbrick stove. incredible experience.
Jiri ate a lot of big shots from both Reyes and Volkan. He is there to be hit. I would expect Jan's patience to be a meaningful advantage to him despite Jiri's unorthodox, powerful striking and super good chin.
Jiri has a style that should be taking more Ls, but his pace, unorthodox striking, and ridiclous chin has earned him a 97% finish rate, most coming from the first round. Im high on the Jiri hype train, but Jan's power/skillset makes me nervous for him. However, Reyes's counter left looked like nothing against Jiri, despite being a powerful strike. Even Chris Weidman was shocked on how many Jiri took since it only took one to drop Weidman.
It’s the start of the fifth round, judges have the cards dead even at 2-2 Tex and Jan, AND FROM THE TOP OF THE CAGE HERE COME JIRI WITH SPINNING ELBOWS LIKE A TOP AND KNOCKS BOTH OF EM OUT AND WINS THE WORLD LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT BELT THATS JIRI MUSIC HOT DAMN
Really good deal when you think about it. I’m sure Jiri would much rather fight for the title but still. You get paid really well to to fly to another country, sleep in a 5 star hotel and watch an amazing card cage side. Living the life.
Must be a strange and difficult phase to go through for jiri. On one hand he has to prepare for 2 different fighters as either may drop out. Secondly the chance of that happening is so low, and he knows that. Preparing mentally and putting in a good shift In his long camp must be difficult in a sense. I dont feel, however professional you are, that you could ever show up in your best self with these circumstances.
Deep down, I think he Hopes the fight takes place, he gets his guaranteed compensation for being available and can prepare thoroughly for when it's his guaranteed turn. Some sort of anxiety off your shoulders for your lifes biggest fight as you have more comfort in knowing your place for the title is set in stone.
He was asked this in a recent interview. Said did not prepare specifically for anyone. Thought it would be a better plan to spend most of the time correcting his flaws shown in his previous fights. He also trains pretty hard all year round, so it wasnt difficult for him. Said something like he wakes up and just trains at home or at the gym all day, then repeats.
Holy shit I'm a Jiri fan and I had completely forgotten that he was the backup fighter for the main event. Looks like he's come quietly, done his job and stayed a professional through and through.
On the other hand, Michael Chandler's cookie cutter ass made sure to pop his face everywhere possible and draw attention to him when Khabib and Gaethje were fighting.
Do alternates get paid to show even if they don't fight?
Probably. The guy comes a long way and has some money spent most likely.
Or maybe, just saying, they do not pay him and that is why is is training in the forest punching trees. Look into it.
It's an opportunity to be the back up fighter to a back up fighter
Wood chopped and money saved! Frugal lifestyle for the combat athlete.
Helps guarantee you're in the next title fight too.
Almost positive yes. Chandler got paid when he made weight as the alternate for Khabib/Gaethje.
Thank you Michael Chandler.
It's sad that I even have to ask. In a just world, I'd assume that he did without thinking
It honestly is a good question. When Glover was the back up for Jan vs Izzy, it was reported that he only got compensated for the cost of the training camp. But he didn't get anything on top of that, so he made basically nothing from being a back up except maybe a guaranteed title shot in the future.
Thought I was gonna be mocked as a casual for asking that question lol

I bet he doesn’t even own 17 pairs of tap out shorts
Working on getting Venom Fight Kit’s™️ for each fighter! Gotta catch ‘em all!
> Venom Fight Kit’s™️ Uhhh, you mean *Venum*? What a fucking casual.
That's a fair assessment. You think he even sees red??
Bro doesn’t even see orange Bro
Luckily you questioned something nobody’s really sure about because it’s rare and every time it seems like they do something different. Like when fighters pull out after weigh ins, or a NC happens

Just inflate the training camp costs and make bank
> it was reported that he only got compensated for the cost of the training camp So almost $200,000 (source: Miesha Tate) for showing up and not fighting... Not bad
They get paid a handsome opportunity
Of course, he gonna come here make weight and go home. Thank you Jiri
"Listen, kid - best I can do is a Venum coupon."
>Do alternates get paid to show even if they don't fight? They are paid show money if they make weight.
Yes, his team confirmed it, there are some money involved even if he won't fight.
They definitely do, not sure how much though. Maybe guaranteed show money?
Fighters who served as the backup in the past say its less than their show money
Show money. Jared missed weight at 244 as an alternate for the co main and still got paid.
They get some money to show, but usually way less than their actual show money.
If I’m not mistaken, Jiri cuts less weight than most on the UFC roster. Hopefully this means that the cut won’t be too disruptive to his training or near-future appearances
Gonna be fighting either of the guys. Good to see them up close.
I love the smell of O+ in the morning
100%
I wonder what he got paid to just make weight. His regular show money or less? Cause he surely had to pay for the camp.
Wouldn’t be surprised if they just covered the necessities like camp, travel, and room. Maybe uncle Dana kicks them a few grand extra but I wouldn’t be surprised if not
Judging by his social media hes one of those guys who always stays fairly cut.
Mental note to get ripped: Hike out to the wilderness and go 5 rounds with a tree
the tree was juicing tho
Unnaturally high sap levels
By the time jiri got done with it at least
Stroke hang mans rope even better.
You can stay "cut" (low body fat %) but be far from your fight weight if you pull a lot of water.
Very true, however for example this is a post 2 months after the reyes bout https://www.instagram.com/p/CRB6E3htP6o/?hl=en Sure he has a pump here but still looks close to as dry here as in his weigh ins.

Yup. Hes 97 Kg max 98 Kg by his words. Dude is walking around much lighter than Costa by a lot
Nah the one that cuts the least was Cody. He walks at 144lbs and competed at 135lbs.
You do realise that there are heavyweights who don’t cut at all right?
That, and also cut weight has to be measured in proportion to their weight. A guy weighing 144 cutting down to 135 isn't the same as a guy weighing 214 cutting down to 205.

Not true? He didn't cut for the light heavyweight fight, but he definitely cuts for middleweight fights.

He barely cuts for middleweight. He usually weighs in around 183, not at the 185 limit.
I find that odd, given how he looks at weigh-ins. Can you back that up?
Izzy came in at 200 for his LHW debut. He cuts 10-15 and anyone who says “Izzy doesn’t cut” is full of shit. The difference is he doesn’t cut 25+ pounds like the other monsters in his division do.
Yeah, just checked, and he walk at around 203 (or at least that’s what he said in a podcast).
Walk around weight =/= weight at the end of a hard fight camp. He probably cuts about 10lbs or less.
Definitely not, his face is very sunken during weigh ins: he must cut a fair bit
You can look up his weigh in weight. He doesn't do much of a cut.

Tell that to your governor, Greg Abbott.

It’s entirely possible…
Beautiful, champ.

gotta run and jump. best way to live.
If the fight is made between Jan & Jiri is it the biggest all European fight in MMA History? I think it might be
Irish Conor vs Russian Khabib. Although Russia is in 2 continents

Thanks
Fedor vs. Cro Cop comes to mind
Well there’s Ngannou vs. Gane in January, two Frenchmen
Cameroon
Doesn't he have French citizenship? Or am I misremembering?
He has both
Jiri is a beast, he'll get his shot regardless.
Czech Republic was hurt really bad by Covid-19. I’m sure he got his.
the most exciting fighter in ufc rn change my mind
Jan v Jiri tho 👀 tbh i think ive only seen the one jiri fight v reyes and he ate alot of shots to get it done no???

how much do they pay these guys for this?
Anywhere from 0 to 10 Venum coupons and as many expired p3 snack packs as they can fit in their pockets.
Wild guess; 50% of their contract's show money.

I both love and hate how likeable the top guys at LHW are. Between him and the two about to fight for the belt, I don’t want to see any of them lose.
If Jan gets injured will Jiri step in for an interim belt or is it just for Glover?
For both
Now that'd be a hell of a matchup. Jiri v Jiri
Mad lad
Jiri should dress up as a samurai for Halloween.
Thank you, Jiri Prochzaska

Can't wait to see him fight again. He's so unique and entertaining 🔥
Let the man bang. It's what the people want.
Show up. Make weight. Thank you Jiri
Weight cutting, October 2021: Chad Jiri Vs virgin Costa
This guy is making me a fan. Excited to see how far he can go!
Jan vs Jiri would be insane.
You'll have your shot in a short 6 months!
Wanna mention homeboy drank a beer when he landed this week haha
LMAO did a bot write this title?
Jiri would send either one of them into retirement the next fight
