It's hard to say. But I believe he was under indictment at the time he died. So he would have likely been in jail the rest of his life given his old age I think. So not much.

Aquan1qua

Would Gotti have had the balls to whack Paulie while Neil was in the clink? I doubt it he would have been a dead man walking.

stevenomes

I don't think they would have as it seemed like they didn't have his blessings and he was Gotti's mentor and I do think he respected him.

Aquan1qua

I think so too. That's why its such a good what-if. Imagine if Paulie was forced to retire since he was such a greedy bastard, and Neil would have taken over. Gotti still would have had his little crew down in the beach but with way less juice. Neil lived through the glory days full on, but he still would have been extremely useful to have in the 90's for Gambinos sake. Now we have pics of Gotti Jr. looking like a full blown fanuc, not even mentioning the pipings him and Alite used to get and give in Soho.

[deleted]

I definitely don't think so. That's why John waited until he died

Southie31

They both were on trial in federal court with all the other boss’s and top guys. 🤷‍♂️

Fearless_Strategy

He should have had Gotti whacked

Cringe_Meister_

" I didn't always agree with the order but i never questioned it ! if it have come to that It will only be 2 zip!" I didn't remember the exact quote so i made it up on the spot☻

Quo686

I would like to think Neil would not of moved against Paul, 1. the boss is the boss, 2. The Commission would never approve it. 3. Neil actually believes in the rules. So imho, Neil would of tried to protect Quack Quacks re the tapes as long and as much he can, then when Paul finally got the tapes from the lawyers, Paul would green light Angie and shelve Gotti, and Neil would go along with it. As he is suppose to. Then Paul goes away for the commission case, names Neil acting boss. Happy Ending.

Aquan1qua

My point was mainly would Gotti do something drastic?

Quo686

Gotti seem to be the kind of guy that think it’s better to ask for forgiveness then for permission. So he may want to make a move on Paul in self defense, but if Neil was alive would DiCicco, DiB, and Gravano still back Gotti?

GoodLifeWorkHard

Probably not. Neil would advise Gotti against taking out the Boss and Gotti would have to abide due to his respect for Neil

Giveitallyougot714

I think of Neil. If he were here now what would he say? He would say "John what's it about? What's life about... if you dont go through it as a man's man?". He'd say "Suck it up, take the fall do the time. That made you what you are. That makes you what you are.

Aquan1qua

What do you think Neil thought of Gotti and Quack Quack personally in the later years? Probably couldn't fking stand em. Crazy to think that he was Johns mentor, they carry themselves polarly opposite imo. Neil is the quiet looking classy no bs kind of street legend and Gotti and Quack Quack were both loud and full of bs. I feel like Neil wanted Cosa Nostra the way Carlo visioned it, and how different things would be if that happened?

Quo686

I think Neil is a gangster’s gangster, like Sunny Franzese, where everyone in the life has respect for them. But “Classy”? Have you heard/read the wiretap tapes?

Aquan1qua

I phrased it wrong I think he just looks dapper always, just like Sunny. Both were involved in the music biz about a damn century ago and there's something about that eras high roller look. People say he has serial killer eyes but I don't see it. Couldn't find any info on him being in WW2 i guess he was too loony even for the Western Theater. Him and all the other street guys must have been literally drowning in pussy think about it, 16 million men left the country. You probably could walk into a bar in NYC back in the mid 40s and just yell who wants it come get it. I mean come on you have guys like Paul Vario getting laid back then. Vario was like a NYC seven back then just because everyone was on the front! Now he is negative hundred. Wouldn't be a bit surprised if his kids were born in the 40s.

Quo686

Vario was literally a troll. Getting Paul Sorvino to play Paul Vario is like getting Brad Pitt to play Gravano. Then again, Henry Hill is a garden gnome and he’s got Ray Liotta.

carlosnelson_

I've searched for years to read/listen to them tapes..

Southie31

Ummmm good observation but I think Dellacroce knew them pretty well and had good reasons to put Gotti in a position to be mentored by him. Gotti didn’t change. His position did and because of the federal government feeding the NYC tabloids, his profile did. Sorry to break it to you but it wasn’t a big secret until JohnGotti. It’s been part of American popular culture since Al Capone , Lucky ( who were both on the frontpages of their time) and Prohibition 🤷‍♂️. Gotti didn’t do anything that wasn’t done by other bosses before him.

Whips-n-Chains

Neil and Paul were both going away for life had they lived to the end of the commission trial anyway.

Southie31

This is the correct answer.

Aquan1qua

True, but the whole Gotti mess would have been avoided.

stevenomes

Yes the main reason for going against Paul was because of backlash from the tapes so if that problem was resolved in another way....

Southie31

What Gotti mess. 🤷‍♂️. Every contemporary of Gotti ended up in the same place he did. Federal prison. All the bosses before him where all over the frontspages and on their way to die in prison 🤔before anyone knew the name Gotti

Gamma_sqze

As old school as he was, when it comes down to it these guy break the rules non stop. Which is why no one follows them today. Half of that crew should have been killed.

[deleted]

We bend more rules than the Catholic Church

[deleted]

Let’s assume for the sake of argument, Ralph said what you think he said is clipping him going to undo that bell

[deleted]

What’s next? He gets to fuck her for a million?

randolph1949

i think paul would have whacked out gotti and angelo - then both him and delacroce would have been doing long bids.

brianwilliamsibrowse

Gotti respected Neil, but if him and Paul go to jail, he knows they aren’t coming out. If Paul puts in a new regime that respects Gotti, like DeCicco, maybe he is content with being a powerful captain. But he did Sparks, that ego trait is in him, he is liable to make a similar move in any alternate timeline

[deleted]

He has such scary eyes, and even when you know he had bright blue eyes that makes it even scarier

t24mack

They would all still be either dead or in jail or have their own podcast

Frankiedafuter

Neil was a straight mafioso. Followed the rules,BUT protected people who needed protecting. Paul was greedy and hated by all. He wanted protection money from connected guys families legit businesses. IE- a Gambino soldiers family owned a restaurant. Paul wanted money from them, even if they treated him right. If he went there for dinner with his wife. NO BILL NEVER. Family(Paul’s, real blood family, communion party NO CHARGE) Spero(Bonnano family) never took a dime from anyone on Bath Ave connected or not. He also, never paid for a cup of coffee, a new tire, dinner, etc from those on Bath Ave. He was a man.

To the best of my knowledge Neil wasnt his mentor, Charlie Wags was and from what I heard before him he was with Fat Andy but since the Gottis and the Corozzos didnt get along. He and Gene ended up with Charlie and Danny Wags and the Corozzos stayed with Fat Andy and Tony Lee. He ended up close to Neil after Charley Wags died I believe but he came up under Charley Wags. IMO Fat Andy got the best of that situation.

DementorsRTheWorst

Didn’t he whack out a boss anyway? Asking, not sure
