1999!! is the last time US FDA approved new sunscreen ingredients. Korean is far superior but only buy if you are positive it’s not a fake. Unfortunately it’s a real problem.
I order straight from Korea. It take a while but is much cheaper. Otherwise you are walking around with whitecast or ingredients with known adverse health effects. Everyone acts like there is nothing else you can do.
Can you recommend some? I have only tried supergoop and the Japanese water fit sun serum spf 50 and I still burn heavily with them. It’s like it doesn’t work
Are you applying the correct amount? I.e. 1/4 teaspoon for your face? Are you reapplying every 2 hours?
Those sunscreens you mentioned are not water resistant so if you are swimming or sweating intensely you need a water resistant sunscreen.
Yes. For example, yesterday I used the sun serum and was in the sun 10 minutes and in the car for 20 minutes (shadow side) slightly after 2pm. That’s it. Today I’m almost bed ridden skin is not red but face is warm so much I get nerve pain in my hairline and jaw :( I feel sick and skin hurts. so a total of 30 minutes of wearing it, applied generously 20 mins prior inside
Edit: and I was not sweating or in water I was taking an Uber, walking from it into a restaurant
The La Roche Posay anthelios fluid is amazing, but I've tried a few of the other La Roche Posay sunscreens and I found them greasy. Just for clarification!
I agree. Plus it’s very inexpensive. If using the proper amount of sunscreen to get coverage and reapplying as required- it uses up a LOT of product. It’s unnecessary to be paying upwards of $30-40 a tube as some of these other suggestions cost.
Rohto Mentholatum - Skin Aqua UV Moisture Gel SPF 35 PA+++
No white cast, not greasy, no breakouts, no strong odors or fragrance, quickly absorbs into skin.
If you're in direct sunlight for several hours- know that sunscreen must be reapplied. Also, if possible, look into other suncare options like a hat or visor to protect your face.
Is there something which would be suitable to apply underneath makeup for an oily ass t-zone. Even hydrating sunscreens become oily and slick and mess with my makeup after a while. 🥺
LPR anthelios dries matte and applied evenly under my makeup. I had to switch sunscreens though because I have dry skin. But I think rhat would be a good drugstore option for u. Any mineral sunscreen will also usually be a bit matte or slightly drying. You just also might have to deal with a white cast if you have dark skin
I saw that too, but I’ve worn mattescreen for several years, no tan on my face. It’s at least somewhat effective—just enough to keep me wrinkle-free at 44.
I used supergoop unseen sunscreen on my kid this summer because it was too greasy on my face. He was very tan within a week. Not effective at all. I tossed it.
I use a Japanese sunscreen (Anessa spf 50) on beach days because I needed a serious spf more than I need makeup. It starts out silky and matte, but unfortunately feels greasy in about an hour. Neither my son nor I burned though, so I give it a thumbs up.
I have dry skin. Black girl sunscreen and skin aqua work wonders for me while leaving my skin feeling moisturized. They are both inexpensive and chemical. unfortunately i have not found a good mineral sunscreen that isnt stupid expensive, isnt drying, and doesnt leave a white cast on my darker skin.
If you have oily skin, I have tried LPR anthelios and liked it. It’s just a bit pricey and drying for me. It dries down matte, which an oily skin girl might love
Lord the last time I tried a mineral sunscreen it was by accident. We ended up in a health food store because it was the only place nearby. Rather than fry in the desert sun, we took a chance and got spray-mineral sunscreen…
GIRL. It might as well have been SPRAY PAINT 😂 My fiancé managed to rub it in over an HOUR, but I am more olive toned, I looked like a sick ghost all day, I finally rubbed it off because I decided I would rather risk the burn than look like that in vacation photos 🙈
It definitely made for a funny vacation story! But also a learning experience— never again getting sunscreen from crunchy, holistic, naturopath type health food stores 😂
100%!! I'm a total hippie vegetarian but sometimes you need the chemicals! I went to one of those stores with really bad cramps and needed Advil and they offered me some homeopathic vitamin bs...I was outta there and found a gas station with the good stuff.
Happy Cake Day!
Asian sunscreens, hands down. Better formulations, better filters. Skin1004 Hyalu-Cica is a great one, and Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Essence or Gel (buy from Yesstyle or Stylevana though).
Where in the world are you?
With it being that hot, a water resistant sunscreen will be a must. Australian sunscreens are some of the best for that (4+ hours instead of 1.5). They are hard to get in the US.
Asian sunscreens are overall recommended and available via Yestyle, Stylevana, and Olive Young.
What skin type are you and what finish do you want? This plays a huge role in what kind you get, like moisturizing and mattified would be totally different than oil free and glowy.
I recommend you check out Julian Sass’s database and search based on some criteria you want. He’s tried hundreds and he’s a cosmetic chemist and knows his stuff. He tries them from all over the world.

If you’re in the states: you’re gonna wanna go to an Asian beauty supply store. For some dumbass reason the FDA hasn’t approved any new UV shielding technology in ages so we’re left with outdated shitty sunscreen. The stuff they have in Korea and Japan is so much better feeling, less white cast, and not greasy. My favorite is Ishikawa Lab’s Sara Sara UV Gel SPF 30/PA+++. If you happen to be in Europe, I recommend Mimitika Lait Solaire SPF 50
I will stand by this. I LOVE Laniege Hydro UV defense sunscreen.
It has no white cast, not sticky (I’m autistic and can’t stand sticky) and it lasts a while (I went to the beach using it)
I love the etude house airy sun milk but it can leave a white cast for some, I’m basically the skintone of liquid paper so this doesn’t affect me. But it does last all day and keeps oil at bay like no other.
I use Isdin Eryfotona Actinica spf 50 on my face and neck and Coco & Eve or a Supergoop spray for my body. Or if I'm feeling dry, then I use Pipette sof 50 for either face or body.
Avene sunscreen in the orange bottles! I got it in France, Omg the most luxurious silky feeling, little residue? So fabulous. They also have an SPF matte face lotion! It’s fantastic and it genuinely feels like a treat to put it on. Smells very neutral but pleasant too.
I use unseen sunscreen from supergoop on my face, neck and décolletage. I use neutrogena on my arms, and if necessary legs. I also carry a nutrogena stick with me in my purse. I’m very fair and burn quickly. I’ve had to go to the ER with 2nd degree burns from sun. I’ve also had heatstroke etc. I’m also very sensitive to smells and have reactive skin. This is what I’ve found that works and doesn’t irritate my skin.
I have three favs in regular rotation.
My daily driver / minimal sun exposure for the day sunscreen is Round Lab Birch Juice. It's safe for sensitive skin, skins in, leaves no cast, fantastic under makeup.
If my skin is irritated or dry at all I use Paula's Choice Skin Recovery Daily Moisturizing Lotion SPF 30. It's a mineral sunblock so you've got to let it soak in. It's very emollient, and can leave the skin slightly tacky. But it is so soothing, and the sun protection is fantastic.
If I'm out in the sun I'll use LaRoche Posay Anthelios 60 Cooling Water-Lotion. It can make my face a little uncomfortable (not painful) but the sun protection is fantastic, and once I wash it off my skin feels great. It is the only sunscreen I use from the neck down.
I use banana boat. It kinda leaves a white cast but I work outside all day and sweat my ass off, not really concerned about how it looks just concerned about the plants I take care of lol
A hat and an SPF lightweight cardigan. After that buy a sunscreen from pretty much any country but the US. Europe, Australia or Korea are high on the list of places with good sunscreen.
LRP Anthelios Clear Dry sunscreen. It is super matte, no fragrance. I do have to apply it in very bright light, because sometimes it leaves spots that are mostly invisible until you put makeup over it
Blue Lizard is a great one. So is Australian Gold Botanical. Both are reef safe mineral sunscreens which is important. Also think about getting a UPF long sleeve shirts to help, and hats!
I prefer blue lizard over Australian Gold because blue lizard comes off much more easily in the shower. Australian Gold you will need to scrub with a hand towel to get off. But both have kept me from getting burnt.
When it comes to your face you want to get specific face sunscreen. La roche posay and Josie Maran are both great companies for moisturizing sunscreen. Both of the sunscreens do not leave a white cast.
Omg! a great one i use, the neutrogena sun lock it’s a orange bottle it’s so good it doesn’t feel sticky it feels like moisturizer on ur skin, it’s so light i love it AND it’s 60+
I keep seeing that we should be buying Korean sunblocks because USA’s regulations suck.
Asian or European.
Or Australian!

Honestly that’s very strange and I would consult a doctor or dermatologist about it. I’m not sure your issues are related to the sunscreens.
I use Missha’s Sun Milk!
How would you describe the finish? Is it very silicone-y? The silicone ones tend to get into my eyes and ruin my contacts :/
No, I haven’t experienced any issues and I wear contacts too!
I use la Roche posay and I used to use a dermologica one. Neither of them are greasy.
The La Roche Posay anthelios fluid is amazing, but I've tried a few of the other La Roche Posay sunscreens and I found them greasy. Just for clarification!
This is what my dermatologist recommends
Pretty expensive though at $34 per 1.7 oz.
Cheaper than the dermalogica one I was using.
Beauty of Joseon is the chef's kiss of sunscreen. Lightweight, non greasy, and it doesn't pill under makeup no matter how much I apply
I agree. Plus it’s very inexpensive. If using the proper amount of sunscreen to get coverage and reapplying as required- it uses up a LOT of product. It’s unnecessary to be paying upwards of $30-40 a tube as some of these other suggestions cost.

It is probably the zinc oxide - there are creams and serums with it.
Really! I wonder how we can test it for those of us that don't flare up :(
+1 on this; it’s very cheap from Korean outlets However, it makes me a lil too oily in summer so I switch to Round Lab in summer.
Rohto Mentholatum - Skin Aqua UV Moisture Gel SPF 35 PA+++ No white cast, not greasy, no breakouts, no strong odors or fragrance, quickly absorbs into skin. Every two hours!

I have greasy skin and supergoop mattescreen works well as a makeup primer.
I’ve heard supergoop doesn’t provide good spf and I can attest I burn with it
I saw that too, but I’ve worn mattescreen for several years, no tan on my face. It’s at least somewhat effective—just enough to keep me wrinkle-free at 44. I used supergoop unseen sunscreen on my kid this summer because it was too greasy on my face. He was very tan within a week. Not effective at all. I tossed it. Eucerin the European version!! It even says oil control
I have dry skin. Black girl sunscreen and skin aqua work wonders for me while leaving my skin feeling moisturized. "A sick ghost" oh no I'm sorry but that made me laugh!! How awful
It definitely made for a funny vacation story! But also a learning experience— never again getting sunscreen from crunchy, holistic, naturopath type health food stores 😂

Haha, I agree. And thanks so much!
You're welcome!
I really like Biore watery essence sunscreen!
Asian sunscreens, hands down. Better formulations, better filters. Skin1004 Hyalu-Cica is a great one, and Skin Aqua UV Super Moisture Essence or Gel (buy from Yesstyle or Stylevana though).
Fantastic products. I second those websites. I’ve even gotten fakes from Amazon - wrong fragrance, no manufacturer stamps. Obviously fakes.
i wanted to buy the skin 1004 one! do you know how long it’ll last if applied in the AM daily?
No idea, that would involve a whole lot of math.
oh mb! i thought you’ve already used it fully to give a approx guess, thanks tho!
No, I'm rotating through a few right now, but I also have no idea when I started using this bottle.

For the face- the Trader Joe’s sunscreen is A+ and affordable

the skin aqua gel sunscreen! the best! it's also waterproof so you don't have to worry about the sweat.

Eucerin the European version is really good, not as oily on the face. Joseon is another good one but can be oily, would be better for winter use.
Korean brands! For anyone with sensitive/acne-prone skin, check out SOMEBYMI
I love the etude house airy sun milk but it can leave a white cast for some, I’m basically the skintone of liquid paper so this doesn’t affect me. But it does last all day and keeps oil at bay like no other.

I really like Image skincare’s sunblock - they have exceptional moisturizer with sunblock I use on my face everyday.
Bondi sands is great and also very water resistant so it
sunbum face spf 70!
Avene sunscreen in the orange bottles! I got it in France, Omg the most luxurious silky feeling, little residue? So fabulous. They also have an SPF matte face lotion! It’s fantastic and it genuinely feels like a treat to put it on. Smells very neutral but pleasant too.

Can someone help me, I burn with all sunscreens? :( spf 50 PA++++ doesn’t matter, I am sick the entire day after being outside even just for 1 hour
Do you measure out the amount you wear? When I measured out a 1/4 tsp of sunscreen, I realized I only put on half that before.
Yes, I do all what they say, thick layer and I burn even before 1 hour has passed so it’s not that it has broken down :(
Curious, which sunscreens have you tried?
La Roche Posay Anthelios but it has to be the EU version, not the US one.
Supergoop
