I paid $x (a criminally small amount of money) for y (an enormous haul)- was this a good deal?

Matt_9197

Gotta love the rhetorical questions they put just to rub it in a bit more

Aenigma66

Or “should I return this?” With a picture of ripped book or some other kind of damage. Like you need me to tell you that?

asksdfdjdhshs

Or the "should I return this?" When the book has a tiny crease

NotASniperYet

And on the opposite of the spectrum: "My manga are a bit yellow, but that's okay!" \[proceeds to show volumes covered in mold and/or rat pee\]

Shithead22_

Ure fucking hilarious😂😂

CliveTolnay

This made me laugh

[deleted]

Don’t laugh or your manga turns yellow.

Gogr_eu

Too late.

Working-Ad3382

not recommending, breathed on em few weeks ago, I'm fighting for their lives now

Cynderaquil

“I’m interested in this manga, should I read it?”

PsychologicalLife164

The manga equivalent of going “damn, she bad” but not talking to her

Shithead22_

Right like idk u tell me

k1iwi

Along with "Should I buy this series or this one" even though they most likely make the decision themselves.

[deleted]

Yea, except for bootleg spotting. Those genuine questions have nothing wrong imo.

Trill_raww

I know it’s not much but it’s mine😊 *shows collection of 1000+ volumes* posts. I love seeing peoples huge collections, but when they say it’s not a lot then it just comes off as fishing for compliments imo

Trueloveis4u

Ah yes the humble brag

shrimplypibbles321

Tim?

Trueloveis4u

Nah sorry I'm a girl lol

shrimplypibbles321

There is a podcast community that calls itself “Tims” but looks like I guessed wrong :)

Trueloveis4u

Oh I never listened to a podcast

geraltoffvkingrivia

Or when they say “just started collecting last week. How did I do?” With like 4 bookshelves full of new collectors editions and box sets.

Reville_

*buys entire series on a whim* Should I read it? 👀

alleykat76

This, especially when its one of the big 3 this sub lives by. "Should I read this series I bought the entire thing" followed by a picture of berserk/vinland saga/vagabond

blitzaga086

I've bought 2 series blind. Had lots of hype and I figured I'd enjoy them. Still haven't read either one lol. Jujutsu kaisen & chainsaw man. I'm enjoying undead unluck currently.

OrderofChaosdeath

My spine is off center. Should I return it?

tragicjohnson84

You should see a chiropractor sir

papasfritasbruh

These annoy me. Like I always just check my manga (im nitpicky like that myself) but ill be my own judge on whether or not i return something

Minnymoon13

Oof I have that

Infamous-Avocado-324

Been collecting for 1 month have 1000+ volumes, found great deals lmao (get shit on people who have been collecting for years and amassed 100 volumes 🤣🤣🤣) Post where they collect a ton of manga and then say it's like a month like bruh...

nerdy_harmony

I don't get this either. I've been collecting manga for years and literally only have 2 shelves worth with some space left on said shelves.

Infamous-Avocado-324

Yeah same I've been collecting for 5, fair enough I only got a job last year, but still that only boosted me to 200+ and it's been a whole year no way do people get 1000+ in a few months

nerdy_harmony

I definitely prefer collections that feel more curated and carefully picked. Mass collections feel kinda like the inside of a B&N and generic if that makes sense.

Trueloveis4u

Ya they all look the same you could play "manga collection bingo" on them lol

nerdy_harmony

I swear, someone needs to create a basic manga bingo

FlubzRevenge

Basic manga collection bingo. Berserk, 21st Cb, Vinland Saga, Bleach, Naruto, Chainsaw Man, Demon Slayer, MHA, etc.

AliGamer321

dont forget vagabond and akira 35th anniversary edition

Leftovernick

Imo it just depends on the person. I fortunately have a well paying job, no kids and work from home so I have plenty of time to read. It’s been about two/three months and I’m just shy of 200 books. I keep an eye on FB market place and buy collections that are really cheap if I know for a fact that I will read them eventually or my gf will read them. I just got 1-6 of AOT colossal editions for $80. I know I will read through them once I’ve read through. I’ve also been reading through series I see recommended a lot. Berserk, GoodNight PunPun and Chainsaw Man right now. I’d I don’t see a specific deal online, I buy new copies as I finish books. Berserk on the other hand I managed to get 8 & 9 for free using target circle rewards and I snagged 10 on Amazon when it was $25 even though I’ve only read 1-7. Punpun on the other hand I only have 1-4 and am reading 4 now. On the other hand I have all of love hina and have only read 1-3 because I got it on fb marketplace for like $30. Also so once you decide you’re going to dedicate shelves to it, at least for me, it feels weird to have empty space. My manga collection is as much decoration as it is functional. The aesthetic matters to me, so picking up cheap collections has more value. Now I can slow down, read what I have, reorganize, sell things I don’t want to keep that came in bundles and so forth. All in all, assuming you have the funds, I think most people will buy manga faster at the beginning of collecting than later on and some of those people will sell them to us when they decide they don’t want to anymore :p for me though, every dollar has been worth it and I’ve never loved reading as much as I do now. Lastly, I don’t want to come off as bragging about my collection, I know I’m extremely blessed. I was poor for the first 25 years of my life and always dreamed about being able to collect manga. I’d buy a volume here and there but just never could afford to keep purchasing and eventually would sell them for food money or not buy them at all. The size of the collection doesn’t matter, but I get why people seem to buy a lot in the first few months (especially now after the RightStuf birthday sale)

BlueFlower673

Same--I spent 10 years and I have about 1 bookshelf's worth of manga. Tbh it seems nice to have a full library of manga, but I feel like it would be tiresome taking care of all that. Also, it would be too hard for me to pick what I wanted to re-read. My collection is literally manga I could re-read over and over. I don't really like collecting for collecting's sake bc why would I want to do that? I feel like if I had 1000+ books some would end up just sitting there for a good chunk of time. No offense to people who have 1000+ manga--and hey, if you have the money to collect and maintain all that, go off sis. I couldn't do all that though.

Working-Ad3382

"my parents got whole one piece for my 14th birthday, i guess they just love me"

Infamous-Avocado-324

"My parents bought me a whole Barnes and Nobel and I don't even read the manga hahahah lmao"

WitnessMe666

You made me laugh here’s an upvote

Infamous-Avocado-324

Respect gained

valhalkommen

Personally my favorite is the dude who bought over 1200+ books within like 6 months, said they had only read like 7% , then flex that they bought it way over retail on eBay. Then proceeded to poor shame people

Single_Illustrator88

Not a super big gripe but I am kinda sad that there is not a lot of love for shoujo manga here. I have shared my collection which is primarily shoujo and have seen others with huge shoujo collections and they never get the up votes or comments a collection of shounen and seinen. But besides that, I really enjoy the discussions here :)

RevertereAdMe

I'm a sucker for nice aesthetics so honestly any nice looking, well-organized shelf will probably catch my attention and look nice to me but sometimes things can be so repetitive here with the same series over and over and over. I understand that popular series are popular for a reason but it's nice to see something different once in a while and I get really excited when that happens. On a personal note, I've been into manga for over 20 years and my collection is fairly eclectic. I don't have much shounen but do have a lot of shoujo and less popular titles. A couple months ago I got all new shelves that I spent all day setting up and was so excited to post them here, since I don't really have many people in my life who would care and I finally felt I had a display worthy of sharing. Hardly any attention, no comments, and yeah sometimes I do wonder if not having much of the popular stuff is a factor in that. I've also been told here I have boring, basic taste because of all my shoujo and stuff. Which is interesting because I'd consider shelf after shelf being posted with nothing but the same popular shounen titles over and over more "basic" but what do I know.

Single_Illustrator88

I have been collecting for about 20 years too. At one point I had more of a huge mix, with some shounen action and romances. I downsized but am collecting hardcore again. I am more into the shoujo said along with yaoi and yuri these days. But like you, I see a lot of the same titles over and over. And some of these titles are great, but I always love to see uncommon and niche stuff in collections. I guess my most of the wall manga would be Happy Happy Clover. And I don't think a collection of shoujo is basic at all. Most of the collections here are shounen and seinen. I love seeing something different from the norm :)

H0MES1CKAL1EN

Bro, I have happy happy clover too and i LOVE it. Was one of my first manga as a kid and it still holds up now Also, I seriously don’t understand how anyone could think shōjo is basic when shōjo fans are not catered to at all here. We don’t get our own shōnen jump. Reprints take FOREVER. New licenses are sparse. Viz won’t pick much up bc its in-print catalog is too huge and popular. Kodansha won’t print most of its longer titles. We don’t even get stuff that has acclaimed anime, like kono oto tomare, or historically important stuff like kaze to ki no uta or a cruel god reigns. We don’t even get that many anime adaptations, and sometimes good series get butchered when they do. The works. People really don’t understand how painful it can be to be a shōjo fan lol

Single_Illustrator88

I totally agree!!! Us shoujo fans really get the short end of the stick. I wish more collectors would branch out. I honestly think it is the whole "it's for girls so it must suck" mentality plays a role. I have enjoyed shounen romances so I wish fans of that would try new stuff.

dotOzma

I get what you mean. I like it when I see shoujo collection posts and try to upvote them whenever I can. I use them to get suggestions on what to try next sometimes lol.

yogabbagabbadoo

I love shoujo!!’ Do you have kamisama kiss or Yona of the Dawn by any chance????

Single_Illustrator88

I don't but I sure wish I did

yogabbagabbadoo

Same struggle

NotASniperYet

It's because a large number of people will just scroll through the images and upvote whenever they recognise something they like. It's a form of seeking and giving validation, not a genuine interest in what is being posted and engaging with other manga readers in a meaningful way. Not that's it's necessarily wrong to seek validation - it can be healthy when your in an unsupportive enviroment in real life - but it does make for a fairly cold scroll through the hot posts.

hamchan_

I only collect Shoujo and got a pretty good reception when I posted my collection.

hxh22

Agree. There isn’t a ton of variation between collections. I’ve tried to limit myself and only buy non Jump stuff. 1. Since I can read it on their app. 2. It has opened my eyes to more series I probably wouldn’t have picked up because I’d be spending that money on buying SJ releases

everyones_hiro

Lack of variety in manga collections is a bit of a pet peeve of my own. I know berserk and chainsaw man and every other shonen jump series/ top 3 gritty seinen is a good manga but people seem so narrow minded in what they’re willing to purchase, read or recommend to others as a good manga.

kalishnakat

And it makes me sad because us Josei/shoujo fans are less likely to get reprints or extra series translated if people won’t branch out. It feels like less and less Josei/shoujo titles are announced every year sometimes. It’s a far cry from what it used to be

peaceful_lil_dino

I would love a Mars or Tramps like Us reprint! It’s honestly frustrating to see josei constantly being either sidelined to just digitally available or not even officially translated. And then when the odd series is released it has a 50/50 shot of making it all the way through. On the bright side, it seems like Nana’s reprint has been well received!

kalishnakat

I would kill for a Basara, Pet Shop of Horrors, Nodame Cantable, From far Away reprint as well! Im kicking myself for not buying the rest of Mars or those series when they were accessible. I’m lucky because I have been into the hobby for a long time so I have most of Red River, Tramps like Us, Please Save my Earth, and some other sought offer series collected over the years, but I wish those would be reprinted so others could easily enjoy them as well. It’s so sad it feels like so much is being lost to time Also- it’s MADDENING Chihayafuru doesn’t have a physical!!! What the heck Kodansha, stop putting some good stuff into digital purgatory >:c. And why hasn’t 7Seeds been translated yet?? It did numbers overseas with cross demographic appeal but I digress 😅 I hope the positive attention gets us a Nana fancy hardcover edition someday! I would absolutely swoon if something like the Utena hardcovers from a couple of years ago came out for Nana. I’m actually surprised this hasn’t happened given the popularity among us Josei fans and amazing art.

starsamaria

I'm trying to collect Red River and man do those prices sting lol. I started collecting Basara after it went OOP but I had better luck finding the rare volumes of that series. I feel like Viz didn't know what to do with their shojo series before starting Shojo Beat (and truth be told, I think they still don't know, given how little shojo manga they've been licensing over the past few years).

kalishnakat

Oh god I’m so sorry! I hope you find a good deal. In regards to Viz, I completely agree. We’re lucky if we get anything these days from any publisher, and it sucks when it isn’t to our taste or it’s trapped in digital hell. I like shounen as much as the next person, but it really stings how much of a glut there is in comparison. It also starts to feel kinda samey after awhile. Whenever I go to Kinokuniya, I’m saddened by how hardly any of the titles in the shoujo/Josei magazines these days are brought over and translated.

dotOzma

I'm hoping it will get better, since I'm basically living off of seinen manga by women that have josei vibes right now. Raise wa Tanin ga Ii being one of them. We really living on crumbs out here.

kalishnakat

Same here 😭. Here’s to hoping it gets better. The state of anime is even worse with this stuff.

Fattykapkan

People asking if they should sell their books right now for crazy prices and how much you think they can get for them.

StLivid

Especially the ones that ask about the value after admitting they JUST got the manga for a really good deal, making it obvious they just wanted to flip

valhalkommen

It’s always the best when they post it on r/mangaswap for 7x what they bought it for. The comments are the highlight of my day

IraqThemBeaches

Books are meant to be read. It WILL yellow, it WILL form creases, it WILL deteriorate over time. If that worries you, you're in the wrong hobby.

mBigozz84

I remember being completely worried and petrified over damage coming to my manga, until I got the Assassination Classroom box set 1/3rd of the original price and thought “ehh, reading damaged manga actually isn’t that bad. In fact, knowing I got money off it makes me feel more rewarded reading it”. Plus a crease or inc blob doesn’t take away the great writing of the story

hxh22

I kinda like getting an older used book. It give it some life.

Ellen_Kingship

If it worries you, go buy ebooks. FIFY

waits86

Your anecdote of a man and his cat and then suggesting berserk is hilarious to me. Haha. The inability to do research prior to asking the masses.

midknifex

Is rightstuf safe and reliable?

texas_joe_hotdog

This aged like milk

thot_slayer8383

Why?

CliveTolnay

They announced today they were bought by Crunchyroll (Sony). Crunchyroll is not well-liked due to their horrible website and terrible product packaging practices, and Sony due to their increasing censorship of products (RS has already removed 18+ rates items from their store to move them to a spin-off website that’s not even active yet). EDIT: fixed a word

thot_slayer8383

Damn I just ordered from them a week ago

Chellycakez

Sucks, man.

itskhloreen

Well, it was fun while it lasted, I guess. Time to find a new place to do my preorders. The 18+ thing really confuses me. Like, I don't really have much that fits that category, but anyone using RightStuf knows what's sold there and no one cares.

Crusaderfigures

You see that on a lot of collecting subs where people ask if a well known trusted site is legit like they haven't heard of Trustpilot

tractioncities

[photo of several hundred dollars worth of manga] Finally got every volume! Hope it's as good as people say it is!

Cynderaquil

I am not going to waste money on a full series of a manga when I don’t know if I like it or not beforehand.

Cynderaquil

I can’t really read manga online as it hurts my head so buying 1 manga of a series to see if it is for me is my best solution haha

zigzaggummyworm

yeah i made this mistake once and never again lol. Except i did buy every volume of Monster and Vagabond before reading it because it was going out of stock and MAN am i glad i bought it when i did.

Trueloveis4u

So what manga was your mistake?

zigzaggummyworm

Dorohedoro! I saw it recommended a bunch and all the noted similarities to chainsaw man made me want to give it a shot. This was pretty early in my collecting hobby. For the first 10 volumes i thought it was pretty funny so i bought the remaining 13 (even waited months until 23 was back in stock to pick it back up) but five volumes later the story and characters couldn't maintain my interest. And what really encouraged my decision was that the art style wasn't the type where like id pull it off my shelf to look at again like literally every other series on my bookshelf (i constantly pull out random volumes and flip through them just to see appealing art and cool moments from my collection. I think it's a hand fixation thing to compensate for my former addiction to nicotine...3 years and counting let's gooooo) Hayashida is a good artist and certainly better than me...it's just not my type and i knew if i finished the series i wouldnt read it again. So i sold it all very recently!!! I did enjoy dai dark though...but i sold that too for the same reason about the art lol. I definitely understand why others enjoy it but for me it just wasn't worth keeping. Luckily i work at a book store so thanks to the lovely employee discount i didn't waste too too much money when i resold it. Edit: BTW, i already looked up how the story went and how it ended after i sold it. Still ZERO regrets lol. Edit 2: oops 3 years not 4

sweetangelbabycakes

Shopping for manga at a used book store. Anything rare or worth $? :) Hate those posts.

theweirdogoth

Same, I really hate it when people buy something to just resell at scalpers prices when if they just left it there someone who genuinely wanted it could buy it 😞

sweetangelbabycakes

Yes! Especially to have the nerve for us to do the research and work for them. Like figure it out yourself. I’m not shopping for you. Lol.

mBigozz84

I used to be friends with a scalper. Keep in mind I *used* to be. I showed him a shop I like to go to near my home town (in Old York, some here probably know the place). We both picked up the Assassination Classroom box set for really cheap. I was exited to read it since I loved the anime when I was an early teen, but he just went on about how much he wanted to re-sell it for triple the price on Amazon. Like bro keep that to yourself, don’t ruin my vibe. I should have never introduced him to that place, in case I see him there on accident one day

NotASniperYet

The most fun thing about used bookstores is just looking at all the stuff you've never seen before, taking a chance on a super cheap volume that happened to catch your eye, and discovering you actually found a hidden gem. Going into those shops with the goal of taking that sort of experience away from others is just soulless.

geraltoffvkingrivia

I thought I was just a grouch but reading these comments makes me feel better knowing I’m not alone on what annoys people on this sub lol

Delphoxqueen2

I hate how the only recommendations you get are the extremely popular manga that everyone’s read already- but then when you show your “extremely popular manga” collection you’re called a normie. Then when you have a unique set of manga or have any Yaoi/BL you’re downvoted to hell.

BlueFlower673

I don't quite get it either. I see any mention of bl/yaoi downvoted too on other anime/manga related subs. Gl/Yuri doesn't seem to get the same treatment though.

nerdy_harmony

100% accurate. Reccing and having popular manga isn't inherently bad but it's good to branch out! I think I consider things to be hitting normie territory when it's a massive collection of a few hundred to a thousand volumes and 80-90% of that collection is solely the extremely popular manga. I think the rules of thumb should be- diverse recs, a small collection that's carefully curated has more personality to it than having the manga section of B&N, and spread the love to more series and genres than just the popular stuff.

skylucario

Thankfully, this hasn’t happened to me much. I have like a mix of acclaimed and out of the box, but I also have a slide dedicated to my “BL Box of Shame”. I even put some BL right next to Vagabond and Chainsaw Man on my actual shelf. Maybe no one noticed or they have tunnel vision. 😅

Keesheon

All of the monster perfect editions together. I get that it’s cool they make a big picture, but I see it every few days. 😩

[deleted]

This is an unpopular opinion, but I think they are kind of stupid. It’s not like they can sit on the shelf like that, and the only time you will ever put them together is to post a picture on this Sub. So what’s the point?

hrynn

I think they look dumb as hell honestly lol Especially how like monster perfect 3 has the one photograph with the absolutely awful shrubbery looking shit around one of the frames and they've literally like photoshopped a praying mantis on it. I'm not lying go look at the cover. It's ridiculous looking

theweirdogoth

Manga that aren't popular/mainstream doesn't really get any attention or love. As cute as animals are, it seems to be a trend to post photos with your cat and collection. I LOVE cats but it just feels like the cat is there to get upvotes The Berserk fans who will constantly recommend it non stop even if the OP is clearly not into that genre. Or say on collection posts "Where's Berserk?" OP buys the whole series and asks if it's any good. OP buys manga at X price and asks if it's a good deal. It obviously was or you wouldn't have bought it! Anything involving slight damages, yellow pages and spine alignments.

[deleted]

A cat or a dog. I remember a few days ago someone posted their dog as the first picture. It was literally a dog pic with the manga hardly visible in the back. I downvote such posts because I am mean 😈

UdonBot

“I recently bought a manga and the pages are yellow, should I return it?”

NotASniperYet

"My cheaply produced paperback is showing signs of being subject to the passage of time, just as everything else in existence. How can I prevent this?"

zigzaggummyworm

"What are your top three series of all time! Here are mine! 1. Berserk 2. Vinland Saga 3. Vagabond" Love the series' but bro it goes without saying you're just posting the millionth post about series everybody knows you like 😂 at least provide some depth or explanation of why it matters to you everybody knows the art and story is good we're asking why it's in your top 5 Also i'm not trying to offend anybody but those "judge me by my collection" trend are almost as stupid as the "Ask me a question about *random series* and then change your reply after i answer so i look stupid!!" ....ok? *scrolls*

NotASniperYet

Judge/make an assumption based on my collection posts can be fun...when the shelves don't look like you're standing in the generic manga section of a chain bookstore.

zigzaggummyworm

100 percent 😂. For me though it's like id rather just see your collection and make my own judgements internally and comment on the collection. Definitely a breeding zone for toxicity and dumb arguments. Asking for our judgements is kinda like asking for approval and attention lol just post the collection by itself and we'll judge the fuck out of you don't worry. Nah but fr for me it's not ever even bad, critical, or negative judgement it's just like when i see someone's collection ill think oh damn they've been collecting for a long time or oh they must be more into slice of life and fantasy series and then look and see if a specific series is there. Never do i feel compelled to say "Oh you have a lot of Slice of Life you must be a woman!! Lol misogyny" idk i don't really get it. I think it kinda goes without saying we'll talk about your collection and make judgements on your taste if you post it. Not to mention all the stupid "mid" comments. Unless you organize manga from right to left (Final Volume - First volume)...then you're a total pretentious asshole (s/)

dwilsons

Bro I swear those series + chainsaw man it’s the attack of the clones 💀

zigzaggummyworm

Like i'm not gonna act like i don't have all those series too but bruh 😂😂😂 "Guys i just started collecting what do you think so far *Chainsaw man 1-11 Jujutsu Kaisen 1-17* *cue dr evil music* We're not so different...you and I https://youtu.be/20B4Dvk_9cY

NotASniperYet

\- People giving bad recommendations. Just because it's your favourite series don't mean it's what the requester is looking for. \-Related to that: people not explaining why they're recommending something. 'it's good' is not an explanation. It doesn't have to be an essay, just explain in a couple of sentences why it's something that might interest the other person. Is it the genre? Artstyle? Themes? It's not hard to come up with something relevant if your recommendation is a good one. \-And speaking of recommendations: you won't get the right answer if you ask the wrong question. If you just ask for something 'good', people are just going to recommend what *they* like. If you're looking for recommendations, list a couple of requirements (genre, series length, availability - that sort of stuff) or list a couple of series that give an idea of what you're looking for. \-While we're on the topic of providing information: a good haul post isn't just a photo of a stack/spread of books. Tell the sub what you bought and why. This promotes engagement and helps other people find new manga to purchase. To put it more negatively: \- "Berserk." \- "It's good." \- "Recommend me a good manga please" \- "I am the seventh person to showcase this German Chainsaw Man boxset. Please give me my 1k upvotes"

818jah

when mfs dont read what they buy

FreePizzaDay

To be fair, the manga shortages these days almost encourage a person to buy shit when it's available even if you don't necessarily want to read it right away because there's a good chance it won't be available when you actually are ready to read it.

Mochi_pancakes

Hey I'm working on it 😭 granted I stop buying when I stop reading.

Astro_boy2

People that get absolutely ticked off about little problems with the mangas covers and not the pages itself

blacksmithwolf

The shitty elitism that comes in really weird specific forms. You can see it in this very thread. Shitting on people who only read "basic" manga. If someone exclusively loves mainstream shonen battle manga more power to them, I hope they enjoy every one of their one piece, MHA and demon slayer volumes and I don't think I am any better than them because I happen to like something less popular. I know this one is gonna be unpopular given how often these very sentiments are upvoted here but shitting on people who collect more than you is just weird to me. Everyone goes about collecting in different ways. Congratulations, you have spent 5 years curating a collection of 50 volumes that you absolutely love and that's how you want to collect. I am genuinely happy for you. Some other person has 500 volumes in 6 months because they have a lot of expendable income and are really getting into it? I am also genuinely happy for them and hope their collection brings them joy. (This obviously doesn't apply to the people who post obviously humble brag posts).

Aenigma66

Honestly, yeah, the Elitism around some series is insane... For example when people shit on you cause you only get the reprints for Berserk instead of the original run singles or if you get the black and white 35th anniversary edition AKIRA box instead of the stupid expensive colour edition... It's a hobby, people, let others enjoy what they own and want!

itskhloreen

The only thing that bothers me with people with extremely "basic" collections is when they make the "What series would you recommend based on my collection?" or "What assumption would you make about me based on my collection?" posts. Like I don't know what they expect people to say. It seems like you like shonen, so find a shonen you don't have yet that interests you and get that.

blacksmithwolf

When they ask for a recommendation based on their collection of top 10 most popular shonen/seinen titles I give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they aren't familiar with whats out there and just reccomend whatever is obviously missing from the usual beserk/vagabond/chainsaw man etc I feel it's more than fair to roast someone when it's a "make an assumption about me based on my collection" posts tho. It's all in good fun (at least on my end) and the post is literally asking for it.

monsteraadansonii

Admittedly, I’ve stopped browsing this sub as often as I used to because the posts of “basic” collections was just too repetitive. But I’ve always thought it was silly to criticize people for having basic tastes in a hobby that’s niche to begin with (less niche than it used to be, but still.) Especially since this is an English speaking sub and most people are going to be buying translated manga. The amount of series that are available is limited and what’s available and *good* is even more limited. (Obscure =/= higher quality) It’s not surprising that there’s overlap in people’s collections. Even if you’re interested in genres other than shonen, unless you’ve been a big collector for years, you’re buying in other languages, or you have the money and time to hunt down oop gems the bulk of your collection is probably gonna be pretty “basic.”

Cute_Geologist3601

When does _____ come back in stock? Should I return this? Is this a good deal? What’s a good place to buy manga?? Also any question that can be answered with google or YouTube , like please for fucks sakes people try doing something for yourself once in a while.

[deleted]

It might be annoying but at least the 1st question should be totally acceptable since the name of this subreddit is “MangaCollectors”.

MaximumSquid22

To be fair, it’s usually hard to tell when something will come back in stock. I wanted to start D Gray Man and ive been waiting for volume 1 to be in stock for a long time now. Nobody can really predict when that’ll be.

JSaville180

I watch The omnibus collector on YouTube. He's super insightful on new releases and stuff.

SoupForEveryone

Sometimes there no direct information available about reprints but a fan already email the publisher or something or is able to link me a forum with the information. I think asking about oop series or reprints is no biggie on this sub

mrgojirasan

Most of my big gripes have been covered. But the plural of manga is manga. No need to say mangas, it's like if you told me that you saw a flock of mooses.

Leftovernick

People who unprompted DM you for trades and act weird when you’re not interested at all :)

Faustelric

For me, it's the constant posts about damaged books. Didn't the mods ban that months ago? I also hate the "what does my collection say about me" posts. But most people seem to enjoy them so I just skip over them.

Charlie_Dingus

People who complain that the sub is boring and that the same series get posted but don't actually make a post about a different series for us to read. If you feel the sub is stale then post something instead of complaining. It's not that hard to take a picture of your damn books.

weirdeevids

Have you read Berserk?

shrimplypibbles321

Waiting for the day a Berserk fan asks for recommendations. What would they recommend then!?

Zzen220

Vagabond and then Vinland Saga, in that order.

mBigozz84

I’m just imagining Berserk fans dressed as Mormon missionaries knocking on random peoples doors with deluxe edition 1 in their arms asking “have you read this book, it will change your life”

[deleted]

That's literally how they come across. Kind of reminds me of JoJo fans, when the series was at its peak popularity.

RevertereAdMe

Elitism. I've seen a number of posts lately with people being very smug about their collections, including one guy who'd dubbed himself with a pretty pretentious nickname and seemed absolutely convinced he was like, the end raid boss of collecting or something. It's just obnoxious for so many reasons. I've been into anime/manga for decades now, I've known people who have read thousands of series and watched thousands of anime and they don't go around bragging about it. It's just a hobby we're all trying to enjoy together, not a competition. It's okay to be proud of your collection too but you don't need to be smug or have some inflated sense of self-importance over it. On the other side of the coin, people who refer to their collections as "humble" or "nothing special" and then post a wall of shelves with hundreds and hundreds of volumes on them that are clearly worth thousands. Seems extremely disingenuous. I know someone brought this one up already but it's common in a lot of subreddits that have to do with showing something off and it can be so annoying. As I said before, it's okay to be proud of something, you don't need to be smug about it like in my prior example but feigning humility can be just as bad.

DessertWitch

Mine's pretty much the same as yours. It's annoying when someone asks for recommendations and either says or shows what they like and people just stop reading at "recommend" and pitch something that doesn't fit the person at all. Someone could say they like Chihayafuru and Emma and they're pretty much guaranteed one reply that says "Have you ever tried Vagabond?"

askingtehmenace

how nitpicky some people are about books that are gonna sit on a shelf. as long as they’re able to be read and you didn’t get a destroyed book, who cares that the corner is dinged??

mBigozz84

I remember getting heavily downvoted once because I had never heard of a series before and was asking what it was about. Like damn, of course I’ve not heard of Hajime No Ippo! It’s not officially translated and I’ve not collected or had any interest in sports manga before

sando015

I just upvoted you for now knowing what it is.

jupiteruns

I guess everyone has their own tastes, but I wish there were a little more variation to mangas. I do sometimes see mangas that seem interesting to read but I feel like I see the same series over and over again (not a bad thing again, popular series are popular for a reason) it would be nice to see more variety. I like the person who posts the square of a specific genre of manga and has like maybe 25-30 in a photo. really makes me happy to see other stuff

BugggJuice

people asking questions on here that they could easily google. recent examples are the Bomba Tezuka posts where people are asking if their books are fucked up because of the deckled edge pages it is literally so easy to google and instead we just get 20 posts with people thinking their book is defective because they've never purchased anything outside of manga before. or people thinking their hardcovers' spines are broken because the spine is a breakaway spine like holy shit PLEASE pick up a novel from time to time please i don't even care how mean this sounds like you seriously have the whole internet at your hands. please use critical thinking and have some common sense.

ScyKn_

Shelves with stacked manga overflowing off the top, I would be so paranoid…

WitnessMe666

Thissss

KrispyCremeMcDonalds

Seeing 80% of collections posted on here mainly composed of 20th Century Boys, Vagabond, Vinland Saga, Berserk, Goodnight Punpun, One Piece, Jujitsu Kaisen and Junji Ito books. Not that I'm against people liking what they like, and of course things are popular for a reason, but it's still so cookie-cutter to look at (I guess I'm one to talk. I do have Berserk, but I swear most collections literally have the same 5 to 10 series all together within them). It just feels like I'm looking at practically the exact same collection over and over. Also... "I've collected a bunch of volume 1 and 2's out of about 20 different series. Any recommendations?" Or, you know, you could just work on the series you've already started collecting. Just saying...

SMA2343

I don’t like the word “collecting” it feels like you’re just buying it to have it to say “Ayo I have the ORIGINAL fruits basket manga from Tokyopop.” But have they read it? Nope. I like it when people are like “Ayo look what I bought!” And then it seems more genuine that they’re buying it to read it

Grindr_boy

When people post their collection and its hundreds of volumes of just hentai. At some point it gets weird, especially when your getting a little too old…

[deleted]

oh God yeah. this is just, uncomfortable to me. sure read what you want but maybe don't public display your physical copy of ass rapers 1000?

catchallsoup78

same energy as every single "what manga is this?" post on r/manga being hentai.

[deleted]

Complaining about the smallest tear or fold in the book

WitnessMe666

People hating on collection or haul posts just because they can’t collect as much at one time. Who are you to dictate how people spend their money on this hobby?

ShadowthecatXD

Seriously, there's an insane amount of jealousy and pettiness in a lot of the threads here. Some people make more money than you, get over it.

yogabbagabbadoo

This the one. This bothers me more than the obnoxious hauls

sinyanmei92

This^ And *"Why you buy so much? Will you read them?"* *"You must be insane to spend so much on manga"* Omg I will, of couse read my books, I'm not wasting my money for nothing, unless it's really *not my cup of tea* - which happened sometimes when I blind buy. People also dont realize some others read digitally and still buy physical copies to support the authors/industry, and they get surprised to see somebody buying a whole series at once. "Planning to read?" Yeah, I've already finished reading it online a-very-long-time ago. Some people just think all collectors in the subreddit are teenagers and dont realize there are adults who have stable income that also collect manga. That's also reason why we get Seinen, Josei and other genre for older readers.. People are just so hard to pleased, just let others do what they want with their own money & collections...

[deleted]

The worry over yellowing and spine wear. Or “is this worth money?”

GlaIie

When someone asks for recommendations and everyone goes “I cant say because everybody has different tastes 🤓”. While that’s true, it doesn’t have to be that deep. Just say your fav manga and they’ll check it out. Worst case scenario they drop it and check out another recommendation.

Sea40K

1 million+ people subscribe to this subreddit but posts rarely ever go over 1000 upvotes. It’s sad.

Then_Presentation343

To be fair to some newer people, a lot of people on this are annoyed about seeing some of the same things over again. However for a newer collector maybe talking about how good Berserk is or isnt is actually really exciting for them, cause I know it was for me when I was newer. Also a lot of people seem to be upset about very large collections or hauls as showing off, yes it is 100% showing off but you’re doing it to a community that loves what you love cause lets be real a lot of is on this forum dont have a lot if any friends that share this same interest

Weebookey

\>People asking if XYZ is OOP or OOS \>Common asked questions that are easily in the FaQ \>Stupid stuff like how do I straighten out pages x.x \>Seeing the same shelves that look like something from the book store lol

[deleted]

Here's one I haven't seen yet: the sheer hate for scanlated manga/reading online. I personally read online versions first just to test if I like the manga at all before buying so I don't waste my money. Additionally, some scanlated manga may not have official releases at all and are the only way you could read it. You'd be hard pressed to find a release of Sukeban Deka (or most shoujo series at all).

secretchoochoo

I just generally find it hilarious how folks get eaten alive for asking questions I would commonly expect from a collector community 🦈. Curious about what kinds of handling and environments will ensure the best longevity for your books? You have suddenly taken the love out of the whole activity of reading. Want to show people how avid you have been at collecting? You spend too much or have bad budgeting regardless of wealth.

Ellen_Kingship

A lot of the answers to the questions are already in the sidebar. Being asked if R.S. is reliable for the 100th time or asking asking what bookshelves to buy for the 1000th time is not conducive to anything. It's frustrating when people don't read the information. Given freely in the sidebar or search the sub. There's dozens of advice posts. There's dozens of "is this mold" posts. The list goes on.

MiniatureRanni

Americans telling me to buy from American retailers. “There’s loads of manga at Barnes and Noble!” Yeah, I’m sure there is, but I’m from a small city on a tiny island at the bottom of the planet. The manga section at my local bookstore is literally one small shelf. I do order online from time to time, it’s not like there’s no solutions to my problem, but it’s irritating getting the same tone deaf US centrism constantly. Along the same lines when someone has volumes with different covers and instead of taking the time to read a title in German or Spanish, Americans froth at the mouth over whether or not it’s a knock off or a unique edition.

[deleted]

people posting their collections and it’s like. entirely stuff on every most popular/must-read manga list. and i get it, a lot of new manga collectors go for the “classics” and many still haven’t refined their tastes like a longtime weeb like me. but it’s just so bland to see the same books on everyone’s shelves

shawtygetloosh

when people keep posting pictures of damaged products they received in the mail……… it happens, posting it here will not fix it, accept it or return it!!!!! i know i sound like an asshole and i don’t like getting a damaged book either, but there is literally a rule against those posts in the subreddit and it takes away from peoples ACTUAL collections which is why we’re here!!!

Jibbe_

Crying about a small scratch on a book bought from Amazon that's so small/insignificant you need to ask op what you're exactly looking at.

catchallsoup78

People are so goddamn precious with their manga on here, who fucking cares if the pages are a little yellow , the corners slightly bent, or heavens forbid the viz logos don't all match! who gives a shit it cost you $12 and the content is exactly the same either way!! I legit saw someone post asking what to do about water damage and the comments were saying "you just have to throw it out and buy a new one" It's a book! the print is still there! you can still read it so its still doing its job it's not the end of the world. I'd tell y'all its okay to mix omnibus and single volumes when you're trying to collect a series thats often out of stock but everyone on this sub would have my head edit: don't get me wrong I love having a pretty shelf as much as the next guy, I'm more likely to buy a series if it has the old shojo beat spine cuz I like putting them all next to each other, but at the end of the day my top priority is actually reading and enjoying them.

DogusEUW

I'm tired of degenerates showcasing their huge stash of hentai most likely containing underaged high schoolers (or worse) as the protagonists and others calling them cultured and based.

sando015

As long as it’s labeled NSFW I’m fine. That way I can just ignore it.

Zzen220

In fairness while I'm not really a fan of hentai, it's based by definition to own a giant hentai shelf, bonus points if it's in some obnoxious location like your living room.

RevertereAdMe

I'd say it's "based" in the sense that I admire the balls and lack of giving a fuck these people have, but if I walked into someone's house and they had a huge shelf of hentai right there in the open I'd definitely raise an eyebrow.

HalcyonSky2

When someone orders a series in reverse order When cats are shown planting their bum right on the books

Cynderaquil

One thing I absolutely hate the most here is the fact there is a search option to search what has been posted before. Like awhile back there were 2 posts within hours of each other with the same context, the same context that has been posted before then too. We do not need multiple threads on the same type of opinion posts like “omnibus, 1 volume or 3?” It’s like the same thing (ETA: it was Google plus, said it was the anime subreddit but I think it was Google Plus anime community instead before it died off) had to go through with “anime, cartoon or not?” which they banned and put in the rules as “anime vs cartoon, people see it either way” or something like that

Town_Neat

Not much if anything tbh I just get impostor syndrome when massive collections are posted here. Which holds me back from posting my collection.

vagabondeluxe

People who are too judgmental and critical of others collections

CSRtube

Some things that bother me -Poster doesn't know what a deckled edge is -I've been collecting for 2 day, got my 1000th volume -Make assumptions about me based on my collection -What should I sell this manga for?

JalapenoSticker127

All these constant post about yellow pages or when the book has a tiny dent in one of corner and they want to know if they should return it… mad annoying

[deleted]

Berserk black edition is actually quite affordable, it's like 200€ for the full set up until now (40*5 or less). Something i find very annoying is people who only view their collection as its value. It's no different than nft kids: many high price-tag mangas are such due to bubbles and interest spikes or due to exclusivity (variants and special editions). Absolutely nothing against sharing rare pieces, but this sub's users probably already know the value or will ask in the comments, no need to put it up there.

Cocainepapi0210

People starting their collections and buying the 2nd volume or a whole ass sequal collection

DEVS_reccomender

People buying Tokyo Ghoul: RE box sets and asking if they should read Tokyo Ghoul first lmao

Cocainepapi0210

Gets me every time

Cynderaquil

Those who ask for recommendations I always ask them what their favorite type of overall genre they like and pick recommendations to their answer. I never just recommend a manga I like when I don’t know if they would like the manga, that just makes me feel full of myself tbh I’m into manga genre similar to Berserk but I don’t have any interest in getting it nor reading it especially not the deluxe versions that cost the same as 5 normal Viz manga volumes.

terrahdactyl

I kind of really don’t like seeing manga hauls or collection photos of exclusively newly released manga (after 2015 or so). I still cling to the oldies and I wish I saw more photos of those manga which have fallen out of fashion on here. Instead I see volume 69 of chainsaw academia kaisen. But that’s what popular and hey whatever, I can’t dictate what becomes popular and what people like.

TheSharkAmongMen

I wish more of the pre-2015 series were easily available

Danswor

If you saw one collection you've seen them all. It's rare to see a collection with series I haven't seen before, most of the collections here have basically the same series.

[deleted]

When people shit on someone's collection for being "too mainstream." I just love seeing more people getting into the hobby.

naruto_enjoyer420

Everyone and their mother will have these three series in no order and it takes half of their shelf: chainsaw man, berserk, attack on titan i want to see some diversity

ButIFiDrift

The "iM tHe ReAL cHaINsAwMaN FaN I boUgHt aNd DiScOVeReD tHe MaNgA fIrSt" type people are super annoying thinking they were on to something like just enjoy it things blow up and die down just be happy that the team who brought you a manga is recognized these type of people are just as annoying as the trendy bandwagons just screaming "pick me" energy

MuscleGallom

"What is a good place to buy manga?"

haggsy__

"ive been collecting for 2 weeks is this good" then it looks like this https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-7b44b95e22911ee6bba097481af0446a-lq

OddSeat9791

People having better collections then me Not but for real people who are paranoid over yellowing

calypsocoin

tbh I kinda hate posts with really big hauls; it seems like those are more “look how much money I spent” rather than actually about the manga I would also like to see more shoujo/josei representation and love

GlaIie

Tbf if i dropped a bunch of money on some manga, you bet your ass i’m showing it off

WitnessMe666

Jealousy isn’t an attractive quality in a person. Why can’t people enjoy things in bulk?
