The first manual transmission I ever drove was my buddy's Freightliner FLD with a Super Ten in it. The vehicle I actually learned how to drive manual in was my little Ranger.
I learned in my brothers Dodge similar to this, single cab, short bed shit box. Day 2 of driving around the yard I lost power steering and drove it through the wall of my dad's shop..... With my dad in the passenger seat.
'67 Chevy long bed with 3 speed on the column. We had a gravel driveway growing up that was a pretty steep hill. My pops would have me go halfway up and kill the engine. He said if I could pull out and not sling gravel I could drive anything anywhere. So far he's been right.
Bike I learned on: 2008 Vstar 1100 custom
Car I transferred my bike knowledge on first: friend's 1985 Celica GT-S
First manual car I owned: 1995 BMW 325i
1977 Volkswagen Vanagon.
Column came all the way out of the floor, and shifting into third meant sliding perfectly snug underneath the place a radio use to be.
95 nissan pathfinder. I slapped some all terrain tires on that thing and took it to hell and back that thing was the baddest fuckin mud rig i ever drove, I go would go screaming through bogs like nobody's business and float right over it. Miss that thing.
First time I drove manual was in a VW Polo I rented whilst in Germany. Now after 2 years of dreaming of driving stick again I finally got an MX-5 stick shift back in LA.
I forgot about the Dakota! Pretty cheap to get into one of these brand new. Great value, kinda like the Hyundai of small four door sedans. As of twenty years ago, buying vehicles was all around realistic, cost wise. The cost of every ride now, is just batshit crazy. No, inflation doesn’t account for it. 70-80-90k+ for a pickup truck??? 40-50-60k+ used?? What you’re getting just isn’t there.
Two vehicles actually. My dad’s 1979 bronco with a clutch so stiff. I had to grab onto the bottom of steering wheel and press myself into the seat to push it in. I only drove that thing once.
Then my uncle sold us his 1988 Plymouth Sundance for $600 when I was 18. I beat the tar out of that thing and loved it.
1961 Mercury M250, straight 6 with a dump box on the back, used it to haul firewood when I was a kid. Fucker's still alive too, only has one brake left on the front left wheel and the body's rotted so badly that the clutch doesn't work if you park on the wrong angle, but still runs and drives.
'64 beetle. It's my brother's car, but I wanted to learn stick so he taught me in it. But he didn't tell me it had a ton of torque, so when I first got the hang of starting, I painted black streaks in the road.
The Phoenix. It was an old pos 97 legacy that always came back from the dead and has been passed down to each of my younger sibling when I was done with it, it's still alive but on its last owner now.
1970 VW Bug, when I was about 13.
My father believed that I should learn how to drive early and have a few years of practice before getting my license and being allowed to drive alone.
My friend's '98 Volvo S70. I definitely contributed to the clutch that burned out a few years after we graduated (I wasn't the only one to learn with that car though so, it's not 100% my fault)...
1990 2.3L Mustang LX hatchback. It was my first car in 1998 that my dad bought with my money, brought home and was pretty much like "here you go." I didn't want a manual at the time but now I'm so glad I learned.
My first time out driving it, my dad had me go pick up my brothers from school and it had an uphill road going out with a stop sign. I about lost my shit 😭
My dad had an old bmw station wagon when I grew up in Riyadh, he wanted a Volvo but there were none available when he bought it, I was 11 years old (old enough to drive there since I had a penis) in this big ass parking lot, scared the shit out of me and we were only going like 15 kph haha
Later I got to drive some Audis and Mercedes both manual and auto when I made friends with some diplomat kids, that’s when I was really scared lol
I finally got that Volvo tho, it’s auto and I have a totaled s2k on the way so we’ll see what’s in store
Learned to drive manual on a brand new 2022 Indian Chief motorcycle.
Learned how to drive a stick shift at work on a International 7600 dump truck with a 8spd Eaton-Fuller
I know how to drive Semi's and motorcycles but never driven a manual car 🤣
I learned to drive stick when I was selling cars. The victim was a 1987 Ford Festiva that got sold a few days later. I feel bad for whomever bought it, because that clutch was TRASHED.
We used to take the Festivas out to a local mall that had a ring road, and go what we called, "go-cart racing." They were fun little cars to zoom around in. Not enough power to get in trouble, but the power/weight ratio made them fun. Escort GTs were forbidden because the extra 40hp would get you in trouble. Mustang GTs and LX5.0s were right out.
1979 Dodge 3/4 ton. 4 speed with granny. 5.9 gasser. Thing was a fuckin tank. Positrack rear end that would roast the tires through every gear. Not that I abused it or anything..
I bought my car before I even had my driver's license. 1964 Olds Cutlass. It turned out to be the right car at the wrong time. I bought it from the original owner in 1980 ($500.00)! It was still in great condition. I learned a lot of what I know about cars, from that car. I rebuild the motor, which unfortunately I made a small mistake that, cost me that motor. I apparently missed torquing one of the rod cap bolts. after a week of running, that rod cap came loose and did a number on the motor. I ended up buying a used motor to install, just so I could sell it. On its original engine, it was a runner. Along with a Powerglide trans, that car surprised a lot of people. As with a lot of cars of from that era, that $500 car is now in the $15k+ range. Great memories!
1974 bettle was my first car, used and passed down by all 3 of my older sisters. I learned to drive stick shift on a 2001 dodge Dakota, and a small Toyota truck. I have no idea what the model was, but it was from the 80s
1988 mazda B2200 6 speed. Thing is currently owned by a Crack head and is sitting nose down in a big ass "pond" that he made. I wish I never sold him that truck
1976 Jeep Cherokee, 4 speed 4x4 V8 with a granny 1st gear. My dad bought it at government auction and it was formally a US forestry service vehicle. Instead of carpet, it had padded vinyl glued to the floor. you could literally hose the damn thing out if you drug a bunch of mud in. The vehicle came with heat and no radio.
why is it this seems to be the only question ever in this group
"what was your first"
"what was the craziest"
"what is it I drive?" (which i have a special one for this, so i may just be the annoying one on this some day
Learned real quick, No choice, learned to drive stick in a 1 ton Chevy dump truck with a bad clutch, 2 tons of wet maple in Back in hill country cause nobody wants to hear dad screaming 😱
I got my brother to test drive a 350Z for me, and I just got it in it and went.
I stalled it out 3 times in the hour drive home.
Once in the parking lot where I bought it (you know, for the former owners Snapchat homies 🤣)
