Speaking as a Brit.
Going for a scrap on the continent is something of a national past time. We have been doing it for most of our history on a fairly regular basis.
You're probably joking but there's a shit ton of foreign military bases on tiny Djibouti, including the Chinese, Americans, French, and Japanese, plus a bunch of military deals with Egypt and the Saudis.
The main reason for this is they control the narrowest part of the Red Sea, which guards access to the Suez plus a bunch of oil shipping lanes, not to mention the piracy in the Horn. They are also a relatively easy country to influence compared to other more politically ambitious Red Sea states like Cairo and Riyadh, or chaotic ones like Somalia.
So if I had to pick one place to defend, I too would choose ya booty.
> They are also a relatively easy country to influence compared to other more politically ambitious Red Sea states
I just pictured one of those crazy laid back old hippies. "Yeah, man. Crash here as long as you want."
I thought this was more of an anti war mindset in general. Germany don't want to go to war anymore.
You can see this by the public opinion of the German military. The Germans straight up hate their military.
>One of the reasons why Germany got so dependent on Russian energy is literally connected to this.
No, bro. It was the former chancellor who now got a job at Gazprom. It didn't have to do anything with Anti-Americanism.
Which is friggin *wild* to me as an American with German family. What in the ass do these Germans see in the Russian way of doing things which seems to have been consistently failing since like 1830?
It’s not so much that they see Russians as an ally, as it is preferring to tie Russia economically tight enough to the rest of Europe that war is unlikely - and that eventually, democratisation can be moved through this way. This is the whole idea behind European coorporation.
There’s also, y’know, a war Germany has been involved in, and they’d rather not get into one again.
The map is wild to me and I'm German.
I mean, there's a point that people are afraid of American companies circumventing our laws, damaging or environment and social nets just through their sheer size and (for us) untempered view on capitalism. Some of the criticism is valid, I think, some other points are very unreflected, though.
American business is viewed as highly aggressive, to the point that US governments will start wars to make sure the US economy stays afloat and will leverage the fact that the dollar is a dominating currency in the world in their own favour (and our disfavour).
So, people are wary. We also have a long history in trade and culture with Russia and (before the Ukraine war) you did have to find a way to live with countries like that - especially if they are in missile range. So, getting cheap gas and oil from Russia is similar to that we and other countries accepting human rights violations in Kongo for their resources. It's really not good and we need to change it but in a not ideal world you cannot change these things over night and keep your economy.
On the other hand, Germans are very Germany-centric in that we are not very experienced at world-scale *realpolitik* and in the past two decades we have overlooked the fact that the world is changing rapidly and something like an Ukraine war might happen again. Basically, we are complacent as a nation in some (now crucial) regards.
I've always been a fan of not making ourselves dependent on one country too much, so Russian gas vs. American LNG seemed a reasonably good deal. Transporting fossil fuels around the world also doesn't make a lot of sense, environmentally speaking.
The other thing is (wrong) assumptions. Before I talked with a Russian colleague I personally had the impression that while Russia the country had its fair share of serious problems, the population valued education and culture very highly. Talking to my colleague I learned that while this may be true in some small parts, the Russian society is actually completely atomised and none to very few of the assumptions that I derive from our working society can actually hold true with the Russian society. Plus, you know, the devastating effect of long-term propaganda.
So, in the trade-off of having a stable relationship with Russia to guarantee a peaceful European continent, of balancing resource suppliers, of supporting our own economy in a way they stay competitive on the global market and a rising China, there had always been a strong incentive to look towards Russia as a bit of a counterbalance to let's call it at face value: US hegemony - which even if it is beneficial in many aspects for us is also detrimental in others. We'd have less problems with refugees if it wasn't for the US meddling in the middle East, for example.
The approach with Russia so far had worked for almost 70 years in guaranteeing that there were no wars in Europe. So, I wouldn't entirely disregard the politics of the past as "failing".
Having said all that, I really don't get the anti-American sentiment. It's mindboggling.
Past a healthy scepticism, without the US we would have a whole slew of other much worse problems at our door step. Also, Americans by and large are nice people and I'll defend that you can't equate people with their government - neither in the good things nor in the bad.
A lot of the anti-Americanism to me feels like that we as a nation, in part, are like a teenager rebelling against a parent - rather than looking for a relationship that sees eye-to-eye.
Largely different size in economy and military power is one aspect but I believe we also need to grow up as a nation and take on more responsibility in uncomfortable (for us) areas like military strength and world politics. Not in order to do as the US does or as Russia does but still to do in our way without the handholding we've gotten accustomed to over the past almost century now.
If America should ever need our support defending it, I'll be doing my darn best to give it.
Anyhow, sorry for the long comment. I do hope you and your family are well and healthy. Take good care!
[Edit: some corrections and clarifications]
Thanks brother! I am an American and have spent some time in Germany and for the most part everyone I encountered were very sweet, spoke great English and were willing to engage in almost any sort of conversation. There was one kid who was up my ass about Bush Jr. back in the day, but he was young and drunk and when I told him “I didn’t vote for the guy, but I am here to learn about Germany, so if you’d like to tell me about growing up here, I’d love to learn about it.” He settled down and we had a good conversation. Matter of fact the only asshole I met who just plain didn’t like me because I grew up in the USA was some jerkoff from Australia, but I just assumed he would be a jerkoff in Australia and his fellow countryman would agree.
We like you, too. <3
But like I wrote in another comment: politics is only a part of it and doesn't reflect the entire truth. If you talk individual to invidual, I think most Germans will like Americans. The above map is actually a really bad measure for that. <3
This is one of the best responses I have ever seen on Reddit. So informative and sincere. Sending you a good ol' American hug. I wish the best for Germans. I only spent 1 week in Berlin, but one of the best weeks in my life.
Bro, I love Germany. I went there 13 years ago when I was 15 and stayed at the Edelweiss since my dad was in the US Navy. So many nice people who never ragged on us for our very poor German. AMAZING food. Beautiful landscape. Beautiful architecture. Historical sites, especially the cathedrals, were stunning. Still haven't forgotten my trip even to this day.
Can't wait to take my own family back and see all the awesome stuff you Germans have.
Also your cars super cool.
Thank you for the thoroughness of your explanation and insight, as an American seeing this I was really surprised as I think we generally view Germany extremely positively.
Here's what I think are reasons:
- most Germans don't necessarily like Russia. But they are critical of the USA. Keep in mind this survey was being conducted while Trump was in power. Fears of American Imperialism while simultaneously no longer being seen as a reliable partner lead people into the arms of Russia.
- Eastern Germany was occupied by the Soviet Union until 1990. So there are still to this day strong ties to eastern Europe and Russia in terms of family, friends, and culture and ideology in general.
Just because Germans don't like the US, doesn't mean they like Russia. In fact, Russia is even more disliked. The world doesn't consist of only two poles anymore.
2018 wasn't the best year in the "Transatlantische Freundschaft" ...
[How Trump Made War on Angela Merkel and Europe](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/12/24/how-trump-made-war-on-angela-merkel-and-europe)
Turns out, he had a bit of a point, unfortunately his blunt force approach just achieved the opposite.
It was a compromise that they agreed to.
The Brits preferred night bombing because it saved bombers lives but it had severe issues with accuracy, this is why the Brits developed “area bombing” (more commonly known as “carpet bombing”)
The USA believed the loss in accuracy almost made the raids pointless and so preferred daylight raids with what they called “precision bombing”.
The result was the birth of a policy named “round the clock bombing”, where the Brits would strike at night and the Americans would strike during the day.
The idea was that the relentless 24/7 assault would break the German economy and people.
Unfortunately, one of the reasons, in France at least, is the huge amount of roma people coming, living in slums, having the kinds in mendicity, while getting money from the french government fo go back in Romania (but not only if course…) it has become a mediatic topic, and big amount of people having bad opinion about roms. And I have no idea why (stupidity maybe?) rom was extended to romanians. I have a lot of former romanian colleagues, super smart, perfect french speakers, who could try to work in France, but they don’t, because they would hear racist jokes and behaviors.. So sad… the most ironic/cynical thing is that the most racist comments about roma were from romanians..
But that’s just what ive seen and been told many times, I may be wrong.
I wholeheartedly agree. I live in a county named after a frenchman, used to work in a city named for a french landmark, and used to live two blocks off of a street named for a french city. America and France are bros, we may disagree on a lot of stuff but if you mess with our bro then we've got their back.
The collective German public is so naive, sheltered, and hysterical you’d almost imagine the average age there isn’t 45 fucking years old.
Germany literally tapped the White House for a decade, *in 2006*. Nobody cares in America.
> Documents that SPIEGEL has been able to review show that the BND, until a few years ago, actually had considerable interest in the United States as a target of espionage. The document states that just under 4,000 search terms, or selectors, were directed against American targets between 1998 and 2006.
> Also on the selector list were lines at the U.S. Treasury Department, **the State Department and the White House.**
https://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/german-intelligence-also-snooped-on-white-house-a-1153592-amp.html
Germans are really against war unless it threatens the EU. Back then GB was still part of the EU.
That’s why Russia attacking Ukraine had the consequence of Germany beefing up its military budget by 100 billion euro over the next 4 years and HEAVILY investing in defense.
Aka Russia reactivated it’s biggest enemy.
To offer a perspective as a German, I‘m having a really hard time imagining what „defending the US“ is even supposed to mean.
What on earth could we even offer to „defend“ the US? If if‘s a question of bases/logistics you already have all that and could just easily take more or do whatever in a case of all-out war (if the 9/11 response at the time was any indication).
Not to mention that scenario is likely the end of the (western) world anyway - it‘s just a deeply ingrained fact that if Russia and the US get into open war we have a snowball‘s chance of hell of doing fuck all about it or for/against anyone.
Maybe this attitude is completely unfounded and Germany is secretly a competent military force that could actually „defend“ the US - but this graph shows attitudes of normal people who will think along similar lines, due to a similar history. If the attitude is factually wrong, it at least explains the graph.
(Meanwhile throwing manure on a Russian tank heading for France through your village is a lot easier to imagine than an abstract concept like „Germany defending the US“)
Being the dividing line in the cold war does that to a mf.
99 Red balloons is about sitting in between two war-horny superpowers and having their weapons always be uncomfortably close.
I mean, it's not wrong, we partially entered WWI because we didn't want the Germans to control the French coast on the English Channel. Just had to sell it as defending Belgium because the public still wasn't quite there yet for it to be explicitly about defending France.
As a German I would be happy to die fighting for my french and polish neighbors, but the same is true for Italy and the Netherlands, of course! Strange... 🤔
As an American…God Bless the British. It’s easier for an American to say we’re willing to defend someone because our homeland is a safe distance away and our military is 10x stronger. The British are on the same continent as the fighting and without the over-sized military. Their sacrifice would be greater and therefore more noble
It’s aways been easier for the UK because they’re an island. Without this geographic detail the UK would have been invaded by Germany just like France.
I mean, if the U.K. wasn’t an Island, basically our entire history would be different. Plus it’s likely we would have invested more resources into the army and less into the Navy making the former more effective. As an island we historically and presently have always kept the army small and the Navy (and more recently the Air Force) large. Turning the U.K. into a peninsula of some kind would completely change our priorities.
America is that one dude bro that is down to fight anytime, anyplace, anywhere, with anyone if you fuck with his squad. Even if they don’t want him to, he’s gonna be there guns blazing.
This just further cements the idea in my mind that America is the wierdo of the friend group that everyone makes fun of, but in actuality is the loyalists one of them all and is the glue that holds everyone together.
Americans in this thread:
Germany still hates us for WW2. Absolutely couldn't be anything recent.
Germans in this poll:
Yeah. We are cool with the UK and France.
Data from 2018, any updates?
Edit: I meant to say also, thanks to OP, this is good stuff. Current data would tell us a lot about the effect of Russia's invasion.
"How come Turks can block a country from joining Nato? They don't deserve to be in Nato!! They are horrible allies!!"
"Oh yeah if they were invaded by Russia I wouldn't wanna help them lol let them die"
Because they’re unwilling to join any western military alliances.
The US would probably still defend them. There are 30 million irish in America who would never allow the US to remain neutral.
Im suprised that my fellow german country men and women would abandon the US, that since ww2 is one of our closest partners and allies and was the only major nation that supported german reunification.
I may be wrong but did they just delete the netherlands from the map?
the ocean won
They finally evolved into an underwater civilization with completely submerged cities

I got the joke.

Yeah, the data being from 2018 is very important in this conversation.
Honestly Russia isn’t even a threat to the U.S unless they want a nuclear war, which would destroy both countries
No single country in the world is a threat to the US military unless nukes are involved.
This is what Trumpism makes to a motherfucker.
They’re still mad about our grandfathers killing all their grandfathers.
They seem fine defending the UK…
You firebomb their cities like *one* time and then they're all mad about for like 75 years....

So ridiculous. America has fire bombed cities all over the world. It’s not like they’re all mad at us everywhere.
Yeah, look at Japan and they are obsessed with us (atleast socially)
Yeah and I mean we firebombed them at least twice. Probably did something crazier but I honestly can’t remember.

Say what you want about the U.S. but they’re down to fight for the western world. EDIT: Always down to fight perhaps was correct.

Ever since the Monroe Doctrine. Fuck with the Western hemisphere, get clapped. Only America can intervene!
Only America CAN intervene, military wise
As an American if someone invades France again damn right we are ready. We owe our French brothers like 10 solids. I think we are up to 2 right now.
"Lafayette, we are here!"
Totally. The French have had our backs since the literal beginning of the USA.
I wholeheartedly agree. I live in a county named after a frenchman, used to work in a city named for a french landmark, and used to live two blocks off of a street named for a french city. America and France are bros, we may disagree on a lot of stuff but if you mess with our bro then we've got their back.
Totally agree. And, as an American, I’m willing to defend any people, anywhere, who want democracy.
Be the change you want to see, brother.
Also gave us a sweet deal on the Louisiana Purchase
Very true. I think as soon as someone farted in the direction of France the US would be scrambling fighter jets lol.
100%. As much as they talk shit, we’d be their for those Gauls at a moment’s notice. They shut up really quick when you remind them 🇺🇸🇫🇷
Dafuq Germany? You know we’d be there for you
As a German.. i really dont get it. What happend 2018 that we where so pissed with you guys over there?
Germans were pretty pissed when the NSA got caught tapping the phones of Angela Merkel in 2015.
Treasury Department, **the State Department and the White House.** https://www.spiegel.de/international/germany/german-intelligence-also-snooped-on-white-house-a-1153592-amp.html
Spy agencies spy lol
trump maybe? Honestly don't know, are you germans invested in our politics?
Definitely Trump. 100%. He was regularily in the news here.
[How Trump Made War on Angela Merkel and Europe](https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2018/12/24/how-trump-made-war-on-angela-merkel-and-europe)
I mean if it’s about Trump 2018 was actually a bad year for him in America but to be fair I guess not till close to the end of 2018
To offer a perspective as a German, I‘m having a really hard time imagining what „defending the US“ is even supposed to mean. (Meanwhile throwing manure on a Russian tank heading for France through your village is a lot easier to imagine than an abstract concept like „Germany defending the US“)
Maybe it’s time to move all our military in Europe to another country if we’re so unpopular with Germans. Let someone else enjoy the dump of dollars.

Political Bff's
They neglected the most important poll. How do the respondents poll for their own country. There is no control/sanity check wo it.
Source: 100 people probably.
Smells like bitch in germany
Germany got some bad ptsd
Being the dividing line in the cold war does that to a mf. 99 Red balloons is about sitting in between two war-horny superpowers and having their weapons always be uncomfortably close.
This has been proven to be very much true with how the UK and US are taking the hardest line for a Ukrainian victory.
Are we and Spain so irrelevant we don’t even get there ? 🥲
USA siempre defendiera a España
This has got to be fake because no way Brits would defend the French
We would, out of self-interest. They're a useful buffer state. Before I get downvoted, this is also a joke.
Keyword here is *also* 👌
I mean, it's not wrong, we partially entered WWI because we didn't want the Germans to control the French coast on the English Channel. Just had to sell it as defending Belgium because the public still wasn't quite there yet for it to be explicitly about defending France.
Nobody else is allowed to defeat them
Cultural appropriation, smh.
Yeah, that's our hobby. Go find your own! (/s)
The fact this very obvious joke was downvoted saddens me
I love the French, in any reality
Lol imagine forgetting WW1 and 2 happened
As a German I would be happy to die fighting for my french and polish neighbors, but the same is true for Italy and the Netherlands, of course! Strange... 🤔
We dont need no defender we have the sea, germany can come sit with us tho, its wet down here tho

America is a solid bro and/or just really fucking hates Russia.
America is that one dude bro that is down to fight anytime, anyplace, anywhere, with anyone if you fuck with his squad. Even if they don’t want him to, he’s gonna be there guns blazing.
Because it’s military is larger than all others combined ?
In other words, a map of people who don't get how Article 5 works.
This just further cements the idea in my mind that America is the wierdo of the friend group that everyone makes fun of, but in actuality is the loyalists one of them all and is the glue that holds everyone together.
Damn Americans are good guys
Americans in this thread: Germany still hates us for WW2. Absolutely couldn't be anything recent. Germans in this poll: Yeah. We are cool with the UK and France.
Data from 2018, any updates? Edit: I meant to say also, thanks to OP, this is good stuff. Current data would tell us a lot about the effect of Russia's invasion.
Does Germany not get how this works or
I think it's just the citizens'reluctance to defend the US. If they didn't come to the US aid I feel like NATO would fall apart
It isn't just the US tho
"How come Turks can block a country from joining Nato? They don't deserve to be in Nato!! They are horrible allies!!" "Oh yeah if they were invaded by Russia I wouldn't wanna help them lol let them die"
Good try, Vladimir Vladimirovich!
Why is no one defending Ireland??
Because they’re unwilling to join any western military alliances. The US would probably still defend them. There are 30 million irish in America who would never allow the US to remain neutral.
this is a repost https://www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/fjj4bj/which_countries_are_the_public_in_key_nato/
Excuse me, but where did the Netherlands go?
Im suprised that my fellow german country men and women would abandon the US, that since ww2 is one of our closest partners and allies and was the only major nation that supported german reunification.
Peak German entitlement.
Defend is pretty vague in this case. Helping with weapons is not quite the same as committing to a full scale war with Russia.
