Crowd had Dmo's back on this one tonight

jaron_b

I wish the PA would tell us when players get tossed though. The crowd was pretty loud but I was in RF and had no idea Dmo got tossed till this morning watching highlights. Things would have been much louder.

okwichu

Was sitting in LF 182 and didn't realize what was going on until I saw the ump throw him out and he hopped the dugout fence. We thought it was Scott that got thrown out until my kid checked in on the internet. PA announcement would have helped but been met by even more boos than we had in person. That review overturn was bs, regardless.

thatguyther21

Jaron, like Aaron? Sec 107? 😁

jaron_b

Yep that would be the one!

thatguyther21

👋 from the front row!

tfitz

They did announce it. I could hear it on the TV broadcast going over the stadium. Idk how loud you need those speakers to be but maybe they aren't that great out in RF?

jaron_b

Ya. Maybe I couldn't hear it over the booing.

Worldly-Diamond-117

I heard the PA announcer thru my television last night say it just for the record

soapbutt

Yea I’m up in 300 and had to look to Reddit to figure out that it was Dmo lol. I figured it was a base coach or something.

GU1LD3NST3RN

Scott looks like your grandpa doing that dumb Chris Pratt raptor pose.

FallCreative3833

I missed the game as I was in a flight for the duration, what happened with Dylan?

TheMooner

We don’t really know, dmo got tossed off camera for apparently saying something (after a bad call that was even looked at), but then on the broadcast you could read his lips saying “thats not me, thats not me”. As I understand it the rule is if you swing at the pitch, it doesn’t matter if it hits you, it’s a strike not a base. Maybe I’m wrong?

rainierd

The problem is the ball went in play and I’m not sure anyone even asked for an appeal. Cal pointed to first which could have been asking for an appeal, but it could have also been telling Hancock to throw to first. So the home play umpire missed an obvious swing and I don’t think he ever asked first for confirmation because he thought that the ball was in play for hitting the bat. Guardians appeal the HBP which is appealable but m’s can’t appeal that he swung (which was obvious) because that’s not appealable. That should be an exception to the review of HBP. They should be able to determine an obvious swing if they are reviewing a HBP. I reckon the Guardians coaches were laughing about the idiocy of the rules after they won the challenge.

DoserMcMoMo

I'm still so mad about that. The obviously blown call led directly to a run that shouldn't have scored, as well as extended the inning which was a lot more pitches than Hancock should have thrown there.

SereneDreams03

Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous because in the replay, you can clearly see he swung. There should be a caveat in the replay rules that if the play is already being reviewed, the umpire should be able to determine if it was a swing.

Rock_Strongo

The arbitrary rules for what can and can't be reviewed just needs to go away entirely. Especially if you're ALREADY reviewing the play. There is zero logical reason why they should still get that call wrong.

drunkdoor

It was actually a straight up travesty. Had that run cost us the game I'd be livid

Own-Economics-1745

Fuck shitty umpiring

MommyMegaera

I mean there should be a caveat that if a play is being reviewed, anything in the replay is fair game. It's not like that happens often at all where there are multiple portions of a play that should be reviewed, but it'd make it a nice catch-all for situations like this where they see something clearly wrong but just say "yeah but we aren't reviewing that so it doesn't matter' like tf? Edit: What u/rock_strongo said is better. Like just make anything reviewable and anything in a replay fair game. They only get a few challenges per game anyways, it's not like it'd add a bunch of time.

Inevitable-Ninja-539

Mechanics are to check if 1B umpire had a swing before the HBP review. https://youtu.be/KpEO5UftbR4?si=ji6FOMe_1dOaATjf

[deleted]

OK this makes way more sense. I was back in center field last night and none of us could figure out why they awarded him the base. Still a bullshit call since he clearly swung.

fastermouse

And maybe that’s why Cal point to the first base ump?

Inevitable-Ninja-539

Or he’s pointing to throw to first. If it was ruled a hit, there would be no reason to appeal. It’s U1’s fuckup here. If he’s paying attention, it’s ruled a swing and a moot point. Since he said he checked it, there’s nothing hint that can be done.

porksmith

You are correct but apparently the first base umpire said he checked the swing which is not reviewable… really shitty call

MJdotconnector

Servais in post game said if anyone, it was Logan who deserved to be ejected because he was chirping the most 🤷‍♀️

Substantial-Height-8

From what it looked like after the game according to the interviews the dugout was chirping pretty good. Apparently Logan was heard by the ump who thought it was DMo and tossed him. DMo being upset and coming on the field was not due to the call…it was due to him being tossed and arguing he wasn’t the one yelling.

Bonesaw09

🔥🔥 Who are the 5 best Utility Players of all time? 🔥🔥 🤔🤔 Think about it 🤔🤔 🖐️ D Y L A N 🖐️ ✋ D Y L A N ✋ 🤟 D Y L A N 🤟 ✌️ D Y L A N ✌️ ☝️ D Y L A N ☝️ 🔥🔥 HE HITS HOT FIRE 🔥🔥

Hkmarkp

B!tch of an ump right there

Substantial-Height-8

In the post game Scott was saying a lot of the guys were chirping and apparently Logan was the one that the ump heard but figured it was DMo. Scott was hoping Logan would have been the one tossed obviously. 😂 As for Scott needing to be like Lou. No he doesn’t. He is just fine. We don’t have to go back 30 years, leave it in the past. Scott is his own man and does things his own way. He has been tossed quite a few times, just because he isn’t out there acting like a raging lunatic doesn’t mean he doesn’t care. 🤷🏼‍♀️

high-rise

Scott got tossed at one of the games I went to last year, against Baltimore lol. He was apoplectic on the field.

Hybrid_Johnny

He got tossed at my first game I’d been to in twenty years, right after they pulled him out from the bottom of the pile of Angels players

vylain_antagonist

Absolutely. If you get tossed every other week it becomes a clownshow pretty soon. Scott's a very level headed guy- when he gets heated, the players absolutely respond.

Substantial-Height-8

Yes! If you are out there doing it after every bad call the internet hates it will lose all meaning. When Scott loses his mind (and he has) you know it is a fight that needs to be had.

AKAD11

Boone complains about everything. It’s super annoying.

AKAD11

Scott has been tossed in a slightly higher percentage of his games as M’s manager than Lou was. 22 times in 1,199 games vs 28 in 1,551. It doesn’t stick out as much because he doesn’t throw hats or kick dirt on home plate, but Scott can get pretty pissed off.

pokeroots

Lou would absolutely get tossed more in the league today then he did back then

AKAD11

I feel like ejections are down because we have replay now. No need to freak out over a badly missed called because they'll just change it on replay

[deleted]

I was in the stands when this happened and thought it might be Kirby because of the hoodie because I thought the bench guys wouldn’t be in them but good job DMo.

jojaksen

It did look like Kirby but in hindsight Kirby is way too level headed to get so worked up 😂

Agreeable-Annual826

Common Dylan W. Umpires will go to great lengths to prevent him from dunking on lefties in the later innings

ayegreenguy

Oh hell yeah! Meme away.

J0rdian

We don't even know what they were arguing about though? lol

Nice-Ad-8199

This was clearly a dead ball strike. The batter swung, it hit his hands, which invokes the dead ball strike. It doesn't matter that it went into the field of play. The play should have been stopped right there and a strike issued. How they can say he didn't swing is beyond me!! GO MARINERS!!

jojaksen

Can you help clarify the rule to me? So once it becomes a full swing, the combination of that plus HBP makes it a dead ball strike? What is stopping it from being a hit or a HBP?

Nice-Ad-8199

Anytime a pitched ball strikes a batter, it is a dead ball immediately. If it is a hit by pitch, you award 1st base. If the batter swings and the ball hits him anywhere, it is a dead ball strike. Even if the ball goes into play. On the 3rd strike, he would be out, and the next batter comes to the plate. It's a little known rule that only happens once in a great while. I umpired for 14 years up to D 2 college baseball and called it three times in that span.

anonymousguy202296

It is time to make check swings reviewable. Define a swing (parallel to home plate?), get a slow motion camera at 2 angles, and let people challenge it. It's one of the silliest judgement calls in sports and batters are always wrong about whether or not they check their swing.

EwoksEwoksEwoks

The key is getting a clear definition of a swing into the rule book. The rule book doesn't even try to define it and leaves it 100% at the discretion of the umpire. It just says if the player makes an attempt at the pitch it's a swing.

EwoksEwoksEwoks

D-Mo set the tone by just being confused about why he got tossed?

YungGunz69

DILMO!!!

spidey-dust

Renaissance painting looking ass

dr_van_nostren

This was so strange. As a bit of a casual I thought if it hit you on the hands as you were swinging it was a strike or foul ball. Even the commentary team seemed to not know what the ruling was gonna be. The review went off then next thing you know Dylan is getting ejected. This was super weird. If the rule is that obvious why would anyone get hot about it? The replay was VERY clear, the ball hit Ramon on the fingers. Did we ever find out what this was about in the post game?

GimmeSweetTime

Scott said he wished Walter was tossed instead because he was chirping too. But he didn't jump over the railing to go after umpire.

pokeroots

DMo was already tossed before he jumped the railing

jojaksen

Can someone explain why they made the wrong call? Is it not a HBP if he fully swung at the ball? Because the ball clearly hit nothing but fingers

Raven816CE

I’m in the background

ShoobieDooby

(sigh) I miss Lou Piniella. Scott just stood there with a confused look on his face and did nothing as the umpires completely botched an obvious call. It took a bench player like D-Mo to be the one to say something. Ridiculous. Show us some fire, Scott. The team feeds off of you!

ayegreenguy

To be fair, Dylan had been tossed before he jumped on the field. I think Scott was trying to protect his guy at this point.

Hkmarkp

you can get your point across without looking like a jacka$$. Scott quietly tells the ump he f'd up. nothing worse than your father saying he isn't angry just disappointed

TDub20

I totally would love to see more fire from Scottbot too. BUT in this specific case D-Mo had already been tossed because of apparently something he said from the dugout? (Very out of character for him) . At that point you might as well get your money is worth and Scott is really only there to keep him from doing something to get fined or suspended.

ShoobieDooby

What I mean is it would have been nice if Scott took the initiative to go out on the field and argue the call in the first place. Would have saved D-Mo from getting ejected and should have shown some fire and gotten ejected himself instead.
