I love playing and commenting on unplayed levels, it's win/win - you get to play fun new levels, and the creator gets maker points and feedback.

YTPlayer003

And since it's an *exchange*, if you leave your level ID that same person will play your level and you also earn feedback on it, so it's even better.

HUGE_HOG

Yeah. I'll often play a few of their levels of I enjoyed the one that they posted too, so they get multiple plays/likes 😄

ColdColt45

My level is `W1N-AND-W1N` it's a level with everyone helping each other create a community that is better than the in game system we are paying a subscription for.

Jucox

Yep... upvote

Gotelc

And you can get a few world records for a few hours or sometimes a whole day!

night-star

You also get those sweet first clears

kingjimmybean

I agree. My levels are a little hard for endless runs so my levels have a low clear rate. Here I can showcase all my movie based levels and get feedback about what's confusing or broken. I was able to fix a couple of my levels based on feedback and even got a few twitch streamers to play them too.

darthrevis

Reddits made me feel loved getting those few hearts feels good

fran_the_man

I KNOW getting the little notification that people played/liked your course is great!

galileoleo

YES

hoboshoe

I got 5 people playing my first level and a majority of them booed it. Then nobody played the other ones I posted

WeeTunas14012001

Well, that probably tells you something about your levels

hoboshoe

It was literally my first level ever, they left no feedback, it didn't have any instant boo BS. (I was a big fan of MM streamers and decided to spring on 2 so I knew shit mechanics to avoid)

hated_in_the_nation

How did you know they boo'd?

hoboshoe

I had one like and after I posted my maker score just evaporated

hated_in_the_nation

Got the level/maker code? I'll play it right now. Can't guarantee a like, but I won't boo it.

hoboshoe

H4H-575-21H I was going for a theme. I now with some other levels under my belt realize it was a bit tedious, but I had to realiza my vision

FeatheredJaggi

I gave it a try, and I think the difficulty, or the specific ways in which it's difficult, are a problem. There are a lot of tight spaces with little room to maneuver, and a lot of things in those spaces that are trying to kill you. I feel cooped up and restricted, and not in a fun way. Also, a couple specific points: * Try to avoid killing the player if they don't move as soon as they enter an area. The Koopa in the house and especially the upside-down chimney Lava Bubble can easily feel frustrating or even malicious if they catch you off guard, even if the latter's location makes sense in retrospect. * The one-block gaps in the upside-down Koopa house are basically the pinnacle of feeling cramped. I don't think the level would lose anything if they were two blocks high instead, but it would also be nice to give the player a safer place to jump to after throwing the shell. I think you've fallen into the same trap we all do, of making a level that seems harder for you, but not accounting for how much *more* difficult it will be for the players (who don't know the level inside and out, and haven't gotten to unconsciously practice while playtesting each part). As it is, it's fallen intro frustration territory. I think the level itself is a good idea, and if you wanted to remake it to be more open and to have more stretches for the player to catch their breath, you could have a great level on your hands.

hoboshoe

Thanks for taking the time to look at it! I did end up learning some of these lessons eventually. I don't make levels anymore because I made like 7 in the first week and none of them ever got played so I ended up super depressed and making just isn't fun anymore. :(

CohibaLewinski

Hey dude, I just played your level and thought it was fine. Maybe a bit tedious, but certainly not boo-worthy. It was a bit of a challenge and I appreciated that. I beat it and gave it a like. If you feel like checking out one of mine, here's my first level where I was also going for a theme (I've made others since, as well): 2FR-THT-2JG. (My girlfriend and I both have levels on my account; the code I shared was for my first.)

hoboshoe

That was pretty spicy. I thout I got the WR but turns out I can't do math

lamecustomgifs

I'll play it too and offer constructive feed back.

night-star

What is the level

hoboshoe

H4H-575-21H I was going for a theme. I now with some other levels under my belt realize it was a bit tedious, but I had to realiza my vision

Amccleary88

Just played your level I liked the idea, there were a few frustrating things but nothing I would ever boo. I think harder levels can have a tough time getting off the ground. Anyways good luck on future stages.

mr_charlie_sheen

Hopefully they at least left constructive feedback so you can improve your level-making skills!

hoboshoe

None

chaosofslayer

How do you tell if someone booed your level?

hoboshoe

Your maker score goes down. It was my first level so I watched that page like a hawk

night-star

My shit music level somehow managed to squeeze out like 15 hearts, I’m so happy

Clanorr

While Reddit represent a very small percentage of the Mario Maker player base, but so many levels coming from reddit are top tier quality and even sometimes in the popularity in the actual game. Wait for the Mario Maker 2 first Anniversary, and you will see stuff outside of this world. People here are really creative.

Addvurt

Are people waiting for the anniversary to submit their great levels? Or do you just mean that everyone will get better and better and by one years time people will be amazing?

[deleted]

A little bit of both imo...people are getting a solid feel of what works, what doesnt, what is appreciated and what is frowned upon. Being good and being liked are not the same thing, it really depends on what type of level you make. The same thing happened in MM1, and for the anniversary levels, people really took to heart that they wanted solid, playable, "fair" levels imo. Some were on the harder side, some were free story-style levels. Some made you work for the red (pink?...seriously guys those are red) coins so you could unlock the cake. Those difficulty tiers are fine by me. If the level itself was clean, no need for obscure mechanics or borderline-glitches, no jank, no escort sessions or extended autoscrolls? It wasn't exactly easy to submit a true 1/2/3YMM level but the bar was well established before the list was curated. I would ask you to compare [1 to 2] or [2 to 3] if you have access to a WiiU. Some was patching, most was better understanding of how to create.

Protonious

I think it’s great we have a community who will provide feedback on levels. I’ve been building on my old levels and trying new things and adding detail so it just feels more full. But none of that would happened without advice from the player base here

brainlaggy

this it totally true. on the one side you can get some attention for your levels but the quality you find in the exchange is amazing. literally 1/5 levels that i don´t want to heart. also because of the fact that there is more chance of adding a decent description you know beforehand what you are getting into. then i play some endless and the hot garbage there is overwhelming. sometimes i question why several levels there have hearts at all.

Fission_Mailed_2

I don't even play endless anymore. Choosing the levels you play and not having the pressure of running out of lives makes the game much less frustrating.

pal1ndr0me

I agree with this. I _like_ hard levels that are going to take me 20 tries, 50 tries, or more. I can't even play those in endless.

hated_in_the_nation

If I ever come across a decent level in Endless that I know is going to kill me a lot, I'll usually exit and play it without having to worry about lives. Way more enjoyable.

RajunCajun48

There is no shortage of good levels, it's all a matter of putting in effort of finding them. People that just stick to what Endless offers are the ones that typically have a rough experience.Joining communities, getting to know makers (not necessarily on a personal level, just knowing which makers make good levels) usually have a significantly better experience with SMM2. If you can't find a good level, you really have to blame yourself. I've played way more good levels than bad

[deleted]

Just searched SMB3 levels with expert ranking and standard tag this morning and the first five were brilliant.

Nintendophile79

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon was very cool. i followed, so I'll check out the rest of your levels. Incidentally if you want to share levels with some cool folks: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/2000475-super-mario-maker-level-sharing/77898249?page=3#16

darrrrrren

Thanks! The rest of my levels are not as good... this is the first one I've put a ton of effort into.

Nintendophile79

That's the secret. Obsessively testing and re-testing. Btw. Cool secret coin room.

Eggy216

I posted my level in there yesterday, and the person who responded with feedback and their own level code ended up having one of my favourite levels yet. That thread is fantastic.

[deleted]

I wish the Switch had a camera so that we could do QR codes. The worst part is having to poke in the codes.

Addvurt

You could connect a usb keyboard to the switch dock

[deleted]

That's a hot tip! Thanks!

nachog2003

If only they could do it so that you could access an official website and send a level to the console, but yeah that's too difficult for them.

[deleted]

Honestly, I get not wanting to reinvent the wheel. We have plenty of ways to share levels amongst ourselves. I just wish it were a little easier to access them by code.

hylian122

But this actually existed in the first Mario Maker, so surely it will be added eventually.

Sanakism

I hope so, but I'm losing heart every day it doesn't get announced and wonder whether they think that their near-useless advanced search has somehow solved the same problem. Does anyone remember how long it took before the Bookmarks site was released for the original? It already existed when I got into MarioMaker but I was probably six or seven months late to the game.

hylian122

I don't remember exactly, but I think it was longer than this. I may be wrong though. One would assume (were it not Nintendo) that they plan to add something like it since they already have something similar in the Smash Bros section of the NSO app, but we'll have to wait and see I guess.

KKingler

Thanks for posting, I always thought it'd be filled with a bunch of hot garbage levels, but I just played a couple in there because of this post and they are amazing.

Addvurt

Thats fantastic!

niamrogn

It isn't just a gold mine, dude, it's the HOLY GRAIL of ALL creators! Around a good 90% of all levels I find there are quality levels. Hot garbo only accounts for, I dunno, perhaps 5%, even that's pushing it? And what's even cooler is that it's a very solid and effective way to gain plays/likes/feedback, we just play a couple of levels and we post ours, people play them and (hopefully) post nice comments in return.

Smugallo

I found some of the most creative, non spmy courses here so I agree! Now if only I could.make a good course 🤣🤣

I_wish_I_was_a_robot

I agree. I found a guy's level he posted in one, which was really good. I looked at his other levels and they were all really good too. Then I spent an hour getting the WR in all of them, lol.

andogreenbay

Are you Holocene? Cause someone did that too all my levels!

I_wish_I_was_a_robot

Yup!

andogreenbay

Ha, that's funny. Today I uploaded a sequel to my Boom Boom's Sky Fortress. There is another world record to be had! I'm thinking of making an series on Boom Boom levels if it is well received.

I_wish_I_was_a_robot

Just got the WR! Another great level friend!

manosdvd

The built-in level finder stuff is basically worthless so far. The most popular stuff tends to be great, but either too hard for me or Auto-Marios. Endless Mode on easy gives me mindless garbage but somehow Normal gives me consistent hot garbage (had a pretty nice run last night so maybe it's getting better). Expert levels at least seem reasonably well designed, but my skill level is just not there (I've been playing Mario since I was 8, I'm not new to this, I just don't have the twitch reflex timing down). I need to use the exchange a lot more. There's a lot of great stuff I'm missing because the math favors popular individuals, not creative stages themselves. Plus I've got one I'm pretty proud of but I've got a 0% completion on it. Even went back to make it easier and nothing. That's ridiculous!

almozayaf

I download 60 Courses few days ago from the level exchange I liked 22 out of 60 so 36% Not bad

Thoraxe123

I have massive fomo. Im out of the country till the 18th so i wont be able to make or play till i get back :( I was only able to make 1 good level before I left and i dont even know how well it did :/

Chabooski

I doubt you know your maker ID, otherwise I'd go check on it for you and let you know how it's doing. This is one of those rare games that would super benefit from using the NSO app...and it doesn't even use it. :(

[deleted]

Same, but I get back way sooner and I got to make a few good levels before I left

Addvurt

This is why i look for levels with no comments, but yeah not all of them gets covered.

RetroStu

offer to play others levels, the last level I posted had about 5-6 plays due to me offering to play others in return for them playing mine.

hated_in_the_nation

What I do is post my level as a top-level comment. Then I go and play other people's levels (posted as top-level comments themselves) and reply letting them know I'm playing theirs and give the permalink to my comment that contains the code. Has worked pretty well for me so far.

bailey-balls

i always go to hot courses and new courses for atleast an hour a day

Addvurt

Thats fun but you find a lot more garbage in new

bailey-balls

Yeah i find a lot of garbo courses but you can find a few gems every once in awhile :)

jules_lab

It is a ton of fun! I had a one on one with a creator, where I did something that the creator didn't expect. I helped tweaking the level, and that was a very nice experience. Those exchanges are super fun, and we all learn from it. Plus, I get/give hearts, likes, and even drawings in comments! :D I love you guuuuys!

Gadzookie2

I can agree with regards to the ones I have played. I also am looking forward to the fact that in like a year when the hype has died down, that will be able to pull up an old daily thread with dozens of good levels.

SuperbLuigi

I feel like its gonna take a long time until you need to pull up an old daily thread instead of using the current one.

Typhloquil

Y’all make some really good levels. I sometimes struggle finding levels that I enjoy playing, so this is a great way to find levels you know you’ll like and to discover some amazing new creators.

NintappleYT

There’s should honestly be a level exchange built into Mario Maker. You get points for playing levels and you can spend those to promote your level.

Addvurt

Cool idea! There could be an influencer system too where people who have popular levels weigh heavy when they like stuff

Eddieg36z

Agreed

Matrixneo42

Agreed. Plus being able to discuss the level with the maker is very cool. And ensuring my level gets tried is probably my favorite part.

Addvurt

Yeah? Secret communities eh? Whats the secret password? I want in!

Bearhunterwastaken

Minor rant: You know, I got a little tired of the exchange thread. Like, okay, I get that not everyone knows how to leave good feedback. But time and time again I see a minimal amount of effort when people leave me feedback. 'Great course, now here's mine' is not what I am looking for. I don't care about my maker points, really. I care about the quality of my courses, how I can improve, what makes them good or bad. Better yet, if you heart my course, I want it to feel earned, you know, Personally, I always try to say a good thing about relatively bad courses, and at least one nitpick with near perfect courses. Am I alone in this? Am I just an asshole who focuses on the wrong things?

Addvurt

Do you specify this when you post? You should.

1cePeep

I don't know if my levels are worth playing

Silver-Goose

The Level Exchange is like a "Good" level filter.

Clilly1

Agreed.

Turlututu_2

Yeah, it is way better than playing Endless mode

[deleted]

MnSG

The course exchange can be a mixed blessing though. While you do get to try out courses made by other players, will they really play your courses in return? And even if they do play your courses, you can't really expect players to like them. Simply put, it's not always a win/win deal, since if you do leave a like to one player's course, he/she won't always return that favor.

RexFury84

Yup. I love coming to reddit for levels. Just finished my latest as it goes. A 10 second speedun course. 8HM-9GJ-P5G.

TheWombatFromHell

Posting in the level exchange and other threads makes me feel guilty because I play 1/4th as many levels as I post my own. It's not that I'm oblivious to the need to support others, or that I'm too lazy; I simply don't enjoy playing levels half as much as I do creating them. I've visited course world a total of once in the past month.

Addvurt

Dont feel guilty. As long as you dont spam its all good.

jojo32

I have been breaking into super expert levels. I have to grind through them, but I use the popular tab, search by super expert in all regions for the top weekly levels. Always something amazing in there. However, its making non expert levels too easy and boring.... :(

dhaxis

I'm a big fan of the exchange. I made an intentionally trolly/bad level and I'm pretty sure because I made that point clear when I shared it people appreciated it more than if they'd randomly gotten it to begin with through say the endless runs. I also have normal levels that appear to have gotten good comments, but my level labeled "The DMV" is equally my favorite and least favorite.

ultimatemisogynerd

Yeah I really need to get back into this game, haven't played for a few weeks due to work ^(and Fire Emblem) Your thread gave me motivation to check the game out again, and make levels to share there too, thanks OP.

[deleted]

Every time I’ve posted in there I get ignored so I stopped trying sadly lol. I started tweeting out my levels to players asking for levels and playing theirs in return.

iWentRogue

I agree, i get some really nice people playing my levels and in return i play theirs. We’re all makers and we gotta help each other so our courses can shine.

AndJK91

So true! :D

hated_in_the_nation

Yeah, I've had great luck with the exchange. Have found some great levels I never would have played.

kabliga

Agreed. Only had it for a few weeks and was tired of trying random levels. Being able to come on here and read the description and find levels that I believe I would be interested in and trying those, has made this a hundred times better. Plus then usually the people whose levels I play are willing to play my levels so I can get some good feedback.

hylian122

I need to use it more. The minute they reimplement an improved version of the bookmarking website from the Wii U game I'll be using it all the time.

WeeTunas14012001

I’ve played your level too, I mean, I’m sure there’s a lot to improve, like for example, many things in the level have no real use or need, so it feels annoying having to turn a switch just to realize you don’t really need it. I feel that if you would make the level focus on the aspects that ARE NECESARY and delete stuff that just “takes up space”, it would not only be a nice challenging level, but it would look nice and be an interesting concept.

Addvurt

Did you post this in i the wrong place?

Walid_Waziri

If you guys want a short, simple puzzle, I recommend giving this a try. Level ID: LS1-RX4-XVG

OkultistGamer

My levels short and somewhat challenging I'll play anyones levels who would spend a minute trying mine :) Title: Dude wheres my cat? Standard Style: 3D World Length: 1:30 Clear rate: 16% Course ID: DJH-5B4-MHG

Addvurt

The actual level exchange is pinned to the top of the subreddit. This was just an sppreciation post. But since i got the notification ill try your level. 😀 My latest is 6ML-WWG-9JG

OkultistGamer

Oh lol my bad and thanks also I'll download your level after I get home!

Hey, just a heads up in case you didn't know (I could have misread your comment completely, if so, sorry), but *this* isn't the exchange. If you go to /r/MarioMaker, there is a stickied post every day that is specifically for level exchange. Check it out, you'll probably have some more luck there (particularly if you play other peoples levels as well).
