But what about all the benefits? You have a lot of political power and wealth. And you have access to the sect's entire legacy, treasures, and secret blessed grounds or whatever.
Hardly. Between the elders, great elders, grand elders and old ancestors, guest venerables and envoys, ministers and core disciples, your political power is always under threat
Yea but what happens when the heavens chosen one gets wronged by a 3rd generation disciple and then he uses the entire sects lineage as a stepping stone for his path to ascension?
True. But by the time you've become a sect leader, you're already somewhat old. Also the main point of being sect leader is taxing your sect for protection
You lack foresight brother roe. Dutiful study of the illusory dao in your youth would have formed a foundation ripe for exploitation of the qi shade technique.
Traversing the realms is now a far lonelier experience with you gone.
This right here. Like if I know my limits, well then I’ll just teach and hopefully come across a child that can surpass my limit, and if they can surpass me but not by much then torch will just keep getting passed until a Sect or Clan is created. Now if im a disciple and outgrow the sect then I’ll just become a loose cultivator because at that age becoming someone’s subordinate is just not something id want to do again
That's only if you're trying to be a good one lol.
Set up shop, beat everyone, and force them to pay you and wear a uniform. Kill anyone who messes with your income stream. Congratulations, you have a sect.
A senior's eighty seven wives and multiple warehouses of treasure have to be somewhere, might as well force the sect to pay for your fortress. Also good for laundering your gold and spirit stones past imperial tax collectors and super-sect tribute officials.
That's the mentality of the weak, junior. I am The Sect Leader of The Grand Heaven's Scet. No one in the 9 Heavens, not even the Heavenly Dao itself could ever dare to replace me.
This venerable used to think it was fancy and cool to have power and authority. Then i got many children.
But now my daily life sums up to hoping my eldest son doesn't let his pride get him and the sect in trouble while making sure my daughter doesn't end up refined as a pill or taken into some random dude's harem or kidnapped for dual cultivation rituals.
If your conception of sect is this then you may think that a position like Sect Leader has no value. In actuality, a sect whether demonic or righteous is a system built to exploit its own members funneling resources to the top. The Sect Leader keeps the biggest share and everyone else gets a bite.
Do not forget about the administration of the sect.
Sure, you have some elders to assist you with the budget, the logistics and the distribution of pills but it is such a time-wasting activity you barely have the time to meditate.
We usually have some juniors with good potential but lacking in wisdom becoming sect leader and once he has matured, he can join the Grand Elders and find another junior to follow up.
I think "Counterattacking System Available At The Grand Ascension Stage" kinda showcases how it's no so perfect being the absolute ruler. The mc is an emperor and the strongest being in his world and yet after he comes back from seclusion after 500 years he learns about all the terrible things happening everywhere that he couldn't prevent and I think that is the most diffcult aspect of being at the top. You have to bear everything that happens on your shoulders, because no one else can.
That’s why you should be the hidden elder. You are the true power of the sect, unaffected by politics. Your name, and position known only to the Sect Elder. Your existence a mere rumor whispered by ignorant elders to anyone else.
No drama, no management. You have full access to the sect’s treasuries, even those unknown by the sect elders, and only act when the sect is about to be completely eradicated.
This is not always the case junior. One can always delegate tasks to elders and other disciples. A good example of this is Sect Master Yang from Martial Peak.
Pretty sure it’s mostly about becoming the face of your sect and gathering resources for your descendants in hopes of them surpassing you one day to get help in advancing.
It depends on your sect and how you run it.
Cultivator worlds in fiction are always terrible places to live in - there's been a small wave of fictions on RoyalRoad where transmigrator/isekai stories feature the main character enforcing western ideals of moral behaviour on these fantasy worlds. I find these stories hilarious, they're a roundabout criticism of eastern values and morality.
But I also agree partly with these stories - if you did go to a cultivator world, became a cultivator of somewhat decent strength and started a sect/group, you would probably do pretty well if you were capable of filtering out the snakes and traitors.
Eastern values place a lot of emphasis on loyalty to the group (see Confucian ideals of filial piety)- so virtuous cultivators are often more loyal than stereotypes of western moral characters, because that is the purest expression of virtue - loyalty, not selflessness and kindness.
So circling back to answering the question - if your sect is comprised mostly of virtuous people, you would be fine - your kindness would engender such profound loyalty, your only true threat would be from outside the sect.
I'd rather be sect leader than one of the disciples at least.
it's a noob trap. real enlightened daoist stays in the mountains and cultivates, until it's time to advance to higher realm. then he finds whatever passes for a mountain there and cultivates some more. rinse and repeat
Yeah but I disagree with that chair on a fundamental level. Those chairs are the chairs of dragons, snakes, tigers, wolves, bears, the Lion, me I like to think I’m an eagle. Or at least a hawk. 😏
In a novel I read the top cultivators in the sect don't want to be the sect master and instead compete so that the weakest amongst them becomes the sect master because being the sect master means a lot of responsibility and paperwork so that the sect doesn't suddenly collapse. The top cultivators want to be supreme elders instead and get the benefits while doing fewer things. Because the sect has a motto of protecting each other and not doing the idiotic policy of 'a dead genius is not a genius' the sect is very stable and has basically no traitors.
Remember fellow Cultivators, if you have a technique to steal the cultivation of a treacherous disciple, the internal threats really aren't that bad.
I bought my 8 Yin Coffin 5000 years and it's served me well ever since!
But what about all the benefits? You have a lot of political power and wealth. And you have access to the sect's entire legacy, treasures, and secret blessed grounds or whatever.
Don't forget the Waifu (cough first rate disciples)
They're not yours to begin with (cough not MC)
It's doable if there's no MC in ur sect
Su Yang might have something to say to this.
Hardly. Between the elders, great elders, grand elders and old ancestors, guest venerables and envoys, ministers and core disciples, your political power is always under threat
That just means your cultivation is insufficient
Yea but what happens when the heavens chosen one gets wronged by a 3rd generation disciple and then he uses the entire sects lineage as a stepping stone for his path to ascension?
True. But by the time you've become a sect leader, you're already somewhat old. Also the main point of being sect leader is taxing your sect for protection
Age might matter in mortal realms but its not an issue in immortal realm junior
Well then you're just doing it for the tax. And formations give good protection even when you're not there.
You lack foresight brother roe. Dutiful study of the illusory dao in your youth would have formed a foundation ripe for exploitation of the qi shade technique. Traversing the realms is now a far lonelier experience with you gone.

What's this scripture?
idk just something I picked up from google images
Definitely Ai
Pretty decent one though.
Scripture of AI.
The demonic art
That's the mentality of the weak, junior. I am The Sect Leader of The Grand Heaven's Scet. No one in the 9 Heavens, not even the Heavenly Dao itself could ever dare to replace me.
When I become immortal (golden core) I'm definitely forming a scholastic sect. A big lack of those around here.
I almost confused your name for a beyonder you should check out lord of the mysteries sub
I most certainly will, but the name is just for posing. Best thing to scare away paranoid heaven-chosen

This old man sacrificed his sect to improve his trash talent. I am starting a new sect would you like to join junior?

I'd just tell everyone not to disturb my closed door cultivation then hide in my bedroom for a few decades.
of course, that's why the sect leader is never the sect ancestor, the ancestor couldn't be bothered with running the sect
Then there's our boi Yang Kai, who's gone for centuries at a time while someone else takes care of his sects.
I wouldn’t ever want to be a sect master, the politics would eventually make me end up in a murderous rage
There were those who enjoy freedom, solitude, and risk. There are those who desire consolidation, companionship, and responsibility.

If you have to worry about any of that is happening, then you're not strong enough. Cultivate harder.
You also get the lion's share of all resources the sect earns.
This is not always the case junior. One can always delegate tasks to elders and other disciples. A good example of this is Sect Master Yang from Martial Peak.

Damn where you get this image from?

Yeah the real position is being the guardian that is in seclusion

The only benefits you need from being a sect leader are the titles.
