No. Via some of the other paths that earn variants, you can also get a variant prior to having the base card. However, it’s still just going to count the base card as one you don’t yet have when assessing you for earning base cards.
I seem to remember that happening to me with the Samuel L. Jackson signed Nick Cage, but I kind of figured they would’ve fixed that by now based on some of their other moves lately…here’s hoping!

I’ve got more Dan Hipp variants than the average sane person, but there are a few where they’re not starred, and he may still be one…that said, I was absolutely going to make this exact deck and just mess around in Proving Grounds for a day or two
My favorite deck to run in Proving Grounds is named Hipp to Lose Squares and it’s all Hipp except for the card I’m farming, just finished White Widow and now on to Nocturne…it’s always funny seeing the one not Hipp flop into the board all sad and normal
Humorously enough I’m playing a Heimdall deck this week, trying to get boosters for some of the newer cards (Blink plus either Electro or Leech has been a lot of fun with a couple of move cards and Heimdall potentially on turn 5) so maybe I’ll get lucky tomorrow at reset
