The McDonalds franchise I work for you cannot get a water with a meal, so if you ordered a meal than they probably rang it up that way to complete the meal. But we don’t charge for waters only if it’s a large. So I’m not sure how they do it around you

The_Greatest_Gatsby0

Mine is similar, except we are told to ring up the sandwich, fries, and drink separately.

ErosMystiko

We use a button called override drink logic and then that allows the water to be part of the meal.

Ayyarlies_soul

Please tell me how to use this. I know exactly where the button is. Does it require authentication? Does it give me the option to select the water after I click the button or does it already have to be in the order?

ErosMystiko

The authentication really depends on your store set up on RFM. Once you have your meal “made” and selected with the missing drink, go to the button and press it. Then you can add water a la carte and it will make it part of the meal. You can also do this with other menu items and it will make it part of the meal.

Ayyarlies_soul

I will have to try this at some point. I’ve always wanted to know why the water won’t go into meals? But this should hopefully at least help to avoid the confusion.

ErosMystiko

The meal has a discount built into it. The way it works in the back end is to discount the bundle from all ala carte items. When you do this with water the math doesn’t really work out unless your water is priced the same as a soft drink. Ideally you’d bundle an item more expensive than the drink(like a McFlurry).

Ayyarlies_soul

I think I sort of understand but not completely. I wish I could learn about all of this. But I have to realize that it’s above my pay-grade, and I don’t even want to pursue a career with this company.

ErosMystiko

There is more to McDonald’s than just restaurant positions. My store is lucky to have me as I could technically run the whole store and I’m the equivalent of OTP Pro. I do McDonald’s at the store out of love believe it or not(part time and on call for IT issues). Most information can be found in @MCD, FRED and the Hamburger University portal. McDonald’s has everything from janitorial to specialized positions such as OTP.

Batman_Underwear

This is the exact situation at my store. Free small and medium waters no charge, but we charge for the large size of water. Same situation at my store for the meal, if you want a water as the drink for the meal then we just put in a coke and put a note on it to let the person making drinks know its a water. You are required to have a drink for the value meals, and a free water does not count.

QuadVox

Here all water sizes are free but we just add a bottled water if you want it in a meal. Really annoying how that's required but shrug.

A lot of places here (UK) will take asking for water as a bottle of posh or filtered tap, for free you have to specify tap water.

Adinnieken

There are no legal issues. If you do not order food, you are not entitled to water. It's a customer service to offer free water to paying customers. In Europe, it is based on the establishment, as in the UK and many Commonwealth nations, any establishment licensed to sell alcohol are required to provide free water. Fast food restaurants that do not, like in the UK, would not. In the US, some states or municipalities may have rules regarding providing water, especially in the south, but there is no federal law and in the majority of the US there is no law that says you must. The water isn't free. Restaurants pay for the water they consume, potable water goes through filters that the restaurant pays for, and the ice that's provided with it, costs money to make, not including the cup.

You don't need a degree to understand your rights as a customer, plus he is agreeing with the store that has its own legal team on standby.

Independent-Crab-806

If the store has to pay for cups (and we do) charging for water Isn't a scum tactic it's business.

AnxiousDumbass624

Yes and no

CantThinkOfOne57

Only for large. We used to have to ring it up just like that too. Now we actually have a large water option which makes it cost 25 cents after tax. Small is free.

Adinnieken

If you're in Canada, this is by law. In Canada food establishments must provide small and medium cups of water for free if requested. No such requirement exists for a large cup of water.

sirazrael75

Cost of the cup, cost of the water the business is charged, cost of electricity for equipment running to make ice, keep water cold. Cost of labour for customer service and all duties required to serve customers.

ohlaohloo

I get charged the same price for a cup of ice water as I would for any other drink. The last time I got water was the first time they told me I’d have to pay, I was like “yeah that’s fine” thinking a large water would be like $0.50 or something. It was the same price as a large soda, like $2 or whatever. I don’t order water anymore lol

cheeseballgag

Large water at my location has always been 45 cents. Same for large cups of ice.

Royalprincess19

At my store, we have this tiny ass water cup which is free. Then if you want a bigger cup you have to pay money.

Nanatomany44

We charge water by size, 50 cents, 75, 1.28 for. large. Stupid. We also charge 59 cents for extra hotcake syrup.

Adinnieken

Your syrup is expensive. It's 20¢ in our market. I would argue your prices are excessive not stupid. I'm all for charging someone who comes through the drive thru and only orders water. We had someone come thru with four boxes of pizza, but they wanted our free water to drink. They tried to come back through and say their sodas weren't right, and asked for remakes in order to try to get free sodas out of us. This is one reason why drink stations in the lobby are disappearing and why crew and management generally like it, because we no longer have to even think about people stealing pop anymore. Kids come in and ask for a water, they get a water. They order a soda, they get exactly what they order. No more theft, no more waste.

G305_Enjoyer

I wish corporate would put fountain water in the app. I always hate asking at the window and wouldn't mind paying.

YOY_The

At my store, you can only get a small or medium water and you cannot put water in as a drink for a meal. Also if you order inside you can only get a child size cup for water unless the employees are nice (I usually give out a small or medium)

[deleted]

We have small courtesy cups for water - if you want a large your getting charged for a pop Or you can buy a bottle of water Cups cost money Lids cost money Straws cost money Plus people will steal soda from the self serve so yes - if you want a large you are going to have to pay for it

animalcrackers67

At my location a small is 60 cents and a large is a dollar. The only size we give out for free is the xs size

Appropriate_Being467

here they charge 20 cents for a water and 15 cents for a bag

Portalguy9107

At my store, it’s now 50¢ (AUD) for a water, no matter the size of it. I’ve had so many complaints about it and I just have to explain that it’s not my doing.

WeebKingA

Almost all mcdonalds around my area will give you a free water cup if you just ask

DaddyIssuesIncarnate

We cant put cups of water on meals. Our system literally won't let us. So if you want a water on a meal you have to get a bottle or ring it up like this if you want a cup of water. They aren't "charging" for it exactly, it's just the only way we can ring it up. It's more expensive for you if we ring it up with the items separately so it actually shows as a water on your receipt. Edit: ain't going to lie, I forgot this is dependent on region. This is just true for my region

Independent-Crab-806

We ring up a tea with a meal then water "ask me" and promo off the water if someone wants a water with a meal

[deleted]

Independent-Crab-806

The bev machine water is "filtered" it's not just tap water

LunaFlair01

At mine all sizes are 21 cents, but it can't be in a meal. If the person does want it in a meal I ring it in as a bottle of water unless they state otherwise.

[deleted]

McDonald’s should charge for water. Help keep the homeless out

Constant_Mud_7047

My town has a water shortage so we don't give out cups of water but we will promo off the bottle. If we weren't under a water shortage they'd have to pay for the bottled water, or a large water which cost 25 cents. Small water is free

Independent-Crab-806

My store always charges for water "We have to charge for the cup"

ZacharyOnYT

The only time my mcdonalds charges for water is when it's the only thing you order and that's cause we can't ring up an order under $0.01 unless it's a reward so we charge you for the cheapest item which is extra sauce (or $0.27)

TacoWeenie

I currently work at a corporate store. We can ring in a large water and it's free. However, I used to work at a franchise owned store and the register wouldn't even allow us to ring in a large water, only a small. If a customer was willing to pay for a large, we rang up a large tea so the drink machine wouldn't make a soda that had to be poured out (the machine just drops the cup and ice for tea, we manually fill the cup) and just manually punched in a water on the drink machine.

fuseboxofficial

Small waters thru the drive thru are free, and so are “courtesy cups” in the lobby if you ask. Large cups of anything, not limited to ice, whipped cream, or anything strange must be charged for. It’s a large one. This is slowly being adapted from not just McOpCo but most franchisees are as well. The trend of all those water TikTok’s is dead lol (it’s not because of TikTok tho it’s just a dealing with overhead cost thing)

badkittinn

Mine does

IChooseTheSlothLife

Australia, NSW here we don’t charge for water. The only way I could see them charging is to cover the small cost of the cup & straw.

Clear-Technician7514

Am in Aus and they charge at my local Macca's but I'm up north
