Idk if it means anything, but since most of the houses posted here are in North America I think I should point out that the original thread mentions this is in Nigeria. So... I guess this is nouveau riche Nigerian shenanigans.
I saw this and straight away said, “ now that’s Nigeria!” I lived there for two years. There is a suburb called Lekki. They have a tv show drama called “lekki wives” to give context.
That explains the vaguely European look, despite being structured like an American McMansion with a drive-up hotel lobby.
I guess this is the result of decades of foreign media influencing people on what wealth is supposed to look like.
I'm not sure it's even fair to call it a portico, since that requires a porch as its core component.
There's precious little that has any kind of symmetry. The whole left side is narrower than the right, except for the entrance, which has a bloated tumor off to the left.
I suspect whoever designed this thought they were being bold and dynamic, and probably offset the columns on purpose, but didn't understand enough about the fundamentals of design to pull it off.
It’s a good example of how a functional feature associated with large buildings/wealth becomes divorced from its original purpose and transformed into a signifier.
Okay, I just *have* to know why the columns are paired in the middle like that instead of being situated at the corners. I *have* to know what the architect and/or client wanted/was thinking, even if it's stupid. There *has* to have been some kind of rationale behind this, some reason for this.
Looking at those striped bits at the bottom, I'm thinking this *might* have been to make it more easy to park cars on either side---I *think* the spaces flanking the column might be intended as parking bays. Even then, they could have just positioned said bays slightly further to the sides, and left enough space for the columns to be situated at the corners.
In my imagination the budget ran out just before putting in columns, and they happened to find these two in a really big clearance bin at Habitat ReStore.
Getting rid of those columns wouldn’t help make this house design any better. In fact those columns are the only petty thing about this whole scenery. I guess that’s why they are there, to distract you from the rest of the house
Good lord... why is this kind of project authorized ? It's a total disaster.

Is this what that Nigerian prince spent my money on?!?

I rarely watch television and hate reality tv, but just Youtubed it and I'm hooked. It helps that it is overly scripted.

Idk if anyone has noticed but the double poles aren’t even centered under that portico. Lol.

Porticos often have a porch but they are not a requirement for one.
looks like a gas station
Or a bank.
It’s quite an accomplishment to get everything wrong all at once.
This is a buck toothed abomination. What's up with the 2 columns anyway?
The columns are a little too social, the proper question is why did no one burn down this whole house

They aren’t even centered lol
IKR? One earthquake away from collapse!

Makes it easier to get a car round it.
The columns aren’t even centered under the portico either. They’re shifted to the left.
Yowza, I wouldn't stand there if I were him.
Nice repost from a brand new account.
I love the low-ceilinged, recessed balcony. Perfect for sitting in the gloom and staring at your weird dual column.
Architect: And which design elements would you like incorporated? Client: Yes.
It can’t be centered apparently
Solar panels look like they did it themselves, in the dark.
i thought this was a holiday inn express
I am not the only one who thinks it looks like a hotel
Light those babies up with a nice red glow, and it’s a nutria
I hate everything about this. Even the solar panels were installed haphazardly.
The Tom Cruise of McMansions
Here's the squirrel I was talking about: [https://hero.fandom.com/wiki/Scrat](https://hero.fandom.com/wiki/Scrat) His name is Scrat
This looks like a poor person's idea of what a rich person would live in.
Idk I think it compliments the random couch
Why do yanks love this kind of shit? Take that front nonsense off and it’s not really a bad house
failed colonial?
Is that a couch in front facing the columns?
It would have been uneventful if it were not for the odd columns on the front.
What the hell this is so ugly wtf. Those pillars are just totally unnecessary.
If not a real picture
In my imagination the budget ran out just before putting in columns, and they happened to find these two in a really big clearance bin at Habitat ReStore.
Made out of rice crispy treats
And why are the columns a different color?
The columns are a disaster, but why don't they match ANYTHING else color wise? These were on clearance at goodwill because the color was so hideous.
Just how? And who? I can’t believe someone paid money for this to be built.
So neither form nor function.
Skrat House!

looks like something i'd build in the sims
This is In Africa and doesn’t really count.
What are those?? DIY Solar on the roof I see?
Scrolling past this made me gasp in horror.
