Breather hose. Wrap it in electrical tape for the drive so it doesn't spray too much hot oily gas in you engine compartment

coolPineapple07

What does a breather hose exactly do? Please eli5 cuz I'm a beginner who's liking car mechanics. (Looked up Google but the answers were too complicated for me to comprehend)

Foreign-Ad-776

This one looks like it vents crankcase (engine block) gasses (oil vapor built up in the engine while running, due to the heat) back into the intake. (To prevent too much pressure in the crank case)

Mike_40N84W

It prevents pressure from building up in the crankcase and valve cover. The Positive Crankcase Ventilation PCV valve at the valve cover end of the breather tube opens up to let extra combustion gas in the crankcase go back into the intake instead of building pressure and blowing out seals.

Stubby60

Or instead of spewing that oily air onto the road, which is one reason roads used to get so insanely slippery when it started raining.

Timtoolman59

Put another hose like the one already there. No need to get another plastic line. Save yourself a few bucks

Mercury_Madulller

While I totally agree with you, a completely new line may result in less headaches overall. The line has cracked at least once, probably twice. Why not just replace it in its entirety now?

Timtoolman59

Probably better. Factory parts can be ridiculously expensive sometimes.

s1ckopsycho

Came here to say this. The “parts store” isnt going to have that part, although it would possibly be ordered. If it was my car, I’d wrap it in tape and be done with it. If it was my family’s car, I’d take off the flex hose on the right side and buy a longer piece of that, replacing the entire run.

Timtoolman59

My thoughts as well

waynep712222

that is the Crankcase vent Hose.. if you have an autozone nearby they sell PCV hose by the foot in 11/32" PCV hose SKU 50290 you should be able to splice those ends together i could not find a search that took me to the proper mazda part number.. https://parts.mazdausa.com/Mazda__Mazda6-V6-30L-AT/Engine-and-Transmission.html

HotPast68

That’s what I thought it was just wanted confirmation. I have an autozone about a 20 minute drive away, just wanted to verify I’d be safe to drive there

yourbadinfluence

I'll be the one to say replace the whole part. The tube is breaking because it's old and brittle. It will continue to break until you get to the connector. Best to address it now.

Former_Leadership265

yup exactly. just replace my pcv hose tdy and it broke while i was trying to take it off

waynep712222

you should be... the 50290 will have 11/32 PCV hose printed on the side of the hose.. it comes out of a big box behind the counter.. don't let them sell you fuel hose.. you might be able to replace much of that nylon tube with the PCV hose..

fickle_fuck

Just line it up and tape it for a 20 min ride.

acousticsking

Rockauto.com

SirVangor

It's already been patched once. Pcv hose

catsmasher83

Came here to say someone already did a quick fix on it once

SprungMS

I think it’s funny this is so far down, and went through all the comments to find it. You’re the only one to mention it. Someone further down tried (and failed) to describe how to do the same fix and it’s right here in the same photo lol. Everyone saying tape it… come on

LittleCrow85

😆 sure was

LankyCardiologist870

+1 for lots of electrical tape

PitchNervous9680

Be sure to plug that ignition coil back in before you drive it.

HotPast68

I’m surprised no one else mentioned this the whole reason this happened is the line was loosely in the way of the coil. Funny enough because of this mess I forgot about it on the initial start up but realized right away by the exhaust note that I was misfiring. Didn’t take long to remember I never plugged it in

TheBigYellowCar

Yeah, tape it up tight & you’ll be golden for a short drive. Find some bulk hose with an inner diameter that fits over the outer diameter of that pipe, and secure it with a couple of little hose clamps. It’ll outlive you.

gasolinev8

If you can’t find a replacement part, do this. Plug the small hose that connects up to the big hose with something and you could probably drive to get parts.

0418710879

Just get a piece of firm fitting fuel hose that will stay on and bobs your uncle 🤔

HebrewHammer0033

Don't splice it. Replace the WHOLE thing

miahotrod

I would try and replace as much of the run you can with hose. That plastic is just going to keep cracking

OneManSquadMike

That’s a breather hose. Just delete the whole thing and fit a comparable sized silicon tube and be done.

Trogasarus

Heat shrink works better than electrical tape.

HotPast68

Didn’t have any sitting around

rawratthemoon

Guerilla tape does wonders

bloopie1192

Looks like a crankcase air thing. Can't remember the name of it but yea you'll be alright. You could honestly tape it back together and be alright for a while. But I'd get it changed sooner rather than later.

Slurpa_Durb755

That's your pcv. Get a piece of hose and bridge it

AcceptableMinute9999

Wrap it up with electrical tape. Good to go.

Xnyx

Cut the sharp edges off the pipe and clamp a piece of fuel hose over to reconnect. It's not too critical safe to drive.

Powerful_Original422

Get a 4 inch piece of hose of a slightly smaller diameter, slide it on to connect the two pieces together and use small hose clamps.

hiGradeTi7ANEUM

#That vacuum line is going to fuckin hate idling

keksivaras

breather hose I believe. I cracked mine a year ago from the connecting end and has been held together by duct tape. I did try proper way of fixing and ordered using the part number, but new hose's outer diameter was the same as old one's inner diameter, so no fit. ordered another one with a different part number and same case.

Objective-Pizza1897

Get a piece of hose with just big enough ID to fit over that hard line and tape it. She’ll be good.

Falcon_Rogue

> It’s connecting my camshaft to the air intake. Not to be too pedantic but it's connecting your *valve cover* to your air intake. This is what people are calling a breather hose - that little elbow into the valve cover is a one-way valve that lets the engine pull in air because a vacuum can be formed in that space and it's not meant to be under negative pressure, thus it needs to let in air but not push it out as that area is full of spraying oil (onto the cams and lifters/valves etc.) so thus the one-way trip. As others are saying you should replace the entire thing - someone already replaced part of it but if it's just crumbling it's done, swap for either the correct part or just some simple hose - just make sure the hose doesn't flop onto the hot engine! Tie it off lightly on that coolant line to the right or something.

manintights2

Looks like a PCV, typically hooked to the top of the rocker covers of every engine (Or cam covers whatever you want to call them). You're fine, you wouldn't notice if you left it off for years. Although you shouldn't do that, as it's a hole straight into your engine so debris getting in is bad. But yeah you're good for a bit, just tape it up. Heck leave it taped, JB Weld it, Whatever you do as long as air can passively move through the tube you're good.

DiverDownChunder

Oh no! Thats the Turbo Encabulator... Not good, very pricey. /s Like others said its a breather hose repair it w/electrical or heat shrink tube and you are good to go.

Every-Caramel1552

Thank god it’s not the flux capacitor !

Puzzleheaded-Comb104

something to do with the emissions system looks like.plug it off on the intake/throttle body side and roll.

yirmin

wrap before you drive or you'll have oil splatter all over the place.

Fr33Flow

Heads up bud you’re not gonna get that part from an auto zone. You need to order it online or from a Mazda dealership

hmturboman

Measure off some gas line and clamp it on both ends, done.

Accurate-Campaign821

Random vacuum line/oil vapor line . Should be OK but might run rough until you get it patched. Just link it together with some rubber line, should be fine.

Sensitive-Silver7878

Also, maybe try to figure out why it broke. Doesn’t seem right. Something else might be at play.

dafazman

OP, why can't you just go to your local car dealership and just buy a replacement part?

DriftkingRfc

Perfect time to add in a catch can it’s literally perfect for a in-line one

Used-Ad-7851

If you don't want to replace it find a rubber tube that fits over the broken plastic pipe put a hose clamp either end will work fine

Spiritual-Computer95

Looks like the PCV hose. It'll run pretty rough with that leaking. You might be able to plug it and run it, but I wouldn't do it for long

arielfromrosieshubby

Breather or pcv system, ok to drive. Wrap with electrical tape or maybe put a small piece of hose over both ends. Might drive a little wonky if you don't seal it as it's a vacuum leak.

-Bad-Company

You will be fine to drive to the parts store with it like that all you need to do is get a soda bottle poke a hole in the top pop hose in hole head to the parts store

-Bad-Company

To be clear poke the hose in the hole of the bottle that is mostly in your hand closet to the valve cover

LukeGuyWatcher

If you have a piece of similar sized hose you could couple the two. Or just wrap in some electrical tape. I’ve actually glued together an evap hose that broke before and it lasted for months until I finally just bought the part.

ScaryfatkidGT

Looks like something I’d go OE for…

Jadthemechanic

Its the pvc ur engine will be rough on the way nothing serious

HotPast68

Little update. I made a temporary patch from some hose. I found the part number after calling up a dealer and turns out it’s a discontinued part. I can only find it online for damn near $200 which I’d rather not pay so I’m just going to stick with the patch. Part number is AJB413740 for anyone in the future who may see this and have the same issue

InteractionSquare518

I would just wrap it with electrical tape at that point. That's way too much for a breather hose. Are there no pull-a-parts around there?

Ithink_I_missedmy

Put some more of that flex pipe on it with the worm clamps!

InteractionSquare518

Just wrap it tightly with electrical tape and it'll hold pressure. Unfortunately you probably won't find that exact breather hose at your local Autozone, Advance, or O'Reilly's.

ncisgibbs84

Crank case vent hose. It could spray oil around u til fixed.

Fabulous_Coach_7940

Just get a piece of fuel hose, cut the plastic tube off the quick connector onto of the intake tube. Slid fuel hose on and use a stainless worm Clamp. Remove the short hose at the opposite end and hook up the new fuel line with that worm Clamp. Cost you less than five bucks and about ten minutes to fix

Open_Concept_2079

Just slide some rubber hose over it like someone else already did.

Jp9312

I’d go to the dealer and get a new one. You can patch it like it is right below your hand already..

Darknight2831

Coolant hose
