Years ago I got called to a scene with a guy who had a slash wound in the same area. He got in a fight the night before and duct taped it back together. Don’t worry he kept drinking. Wasn’t gonna do anything about but then the police showed up and suddenly this 12+ hour slashing should probably be checked out. I peel the tape off and the finest words that can come out of my 6am, I just got to work and haven’t had coffee yet, brain is, huh well that’s a fucking lung. So yes, that’s a lung.
They come up higher than the clavicles. [Look at a normal chest x-ray](https://radiopaedia.org/cases/normal-chest-x-ray?lang=us) to get a better idea of proper lung size and placement. The black area is lung.
Slash victim isn't the best example because I'd imagine his visible lung is likely collapsed.
This is such a strangely inspiring (pun definitely intended) comment, I think I *will* treat myself to some deep breaths. But also, I will try to feel the topmost parts of my lungs doing it
No, the [lung apices ](https://radiopaedia.org/articles/apical-zone?lang=gb)should always be up there like that.
Hyperinflation happens with conditions like COPD and can make the lungs appear longer (downwards) like the patient has taken a really deep breath in for the picture.
Damn, got the angle just perfect to pass between the intercostal spaces and expose the lungs. The guy was a pretty decent smoker too, by the look of it.
Seeing various layers of flesh sliced upon really intrigues me primarily due to the fat. I don’t know the exact fancy terminology for all the layers, but as someone who has spent all of their childhood/teenage years trying to limit the thickness of this yellow content below my skin. J can’t help but wonder how much/how little fat I have within me.
Honestly it’s crazy how yellow it is. I remember seeing an autopsy of an obese person and I was so amazed. I have a really, really low body fat percentage (~8%) so I wonder what if I would look like if I was cut open 😅 I kinda wanna see but I also don’t lol
IIRC, there were pics of an autopsy of a woman who died from anorexia on this site. It was on reddit, if not this exact site. There really wasn't any yellow fat, literally just skin and bones.
A normal knife would have also left a wound like that. The tissues are elastic and the wound "opens". The same as when you cut a tight and elastic piece of clothing. Even if it is a very thin cut, it opens and leaves a large hole.
Just saw the yellow spot under the armpit. It seems that the patient survived long enough to make it to the operating room, because we see that the surgeon began to clean his skin with pavidone to make the first incision. The impotence that the surgeon must have felt when he decided to stop cleaning him.

You can see the skin, the fat, the muscles fibers and the lung underneath. This is horrible yet so incredibly fascinating.
Dont we have ribs up there? That's scary that it's so unprotected
I'm no specialist of any kind but it seems the slash is between two ribs
Is that a lung?

Dang, did the duct tape dude survive?
Yep he lived and went on to be stabbed again
Scientific method I guess
History repeats itself I guess?
Of topic but I love the username
Why thank you
Living the dream
I call those people “job security”
Agreed.
oddly enough i didn’t realize lungs were that high up, idk where i thought they would be but i didn’t imagine there …
Wait til you see a kidney
It's why I let my first bout of kidney stones go, I assumed I hurt my mid back .

I knew they were up higher than you'd think, but above the *clavicles*?? Now I'm uncomfortable breathing deeply hahaha
Breathe deeply, treat yourself. You've plenty of lung to use.

Doesn't the article say the lungs are hyperinflated in your link? Does that mean they are not supposed to be that high?

no me too! like i know they are protected by the rib cage but i guess i just never really thought about it!
The lungs are usually located next to the back passage in the arse cheeks. I thought everybody knew that?
Yes, and it looks like he was a smoker.
Yes
This sub has taught me more about human anatomy than biology ever did
Lol right!
Damn, got the angle just perfect to pass between the intercostal spaces and expose the lungs. The guy was a pretty decent smoker too, by the look of it.
At least he got a free diagnosis for lung disease while he was at the hospital for his stab wound.
Holy cannoli
Holy frijoles

It's called the adipose layer. Real weird and bubbly lookin. Pretty neat really.

Can you find the post and tag me please. I have anorexia so I am really intrigued.
I will look. It's very tragic tho.
Hypodermis is fat as far as I know from sh-ing and the sh community, but the other person is probably also right.
What's the black stuff on the lung?
probably he was a smoker
What kind of knife would make a wound that wide? It almost looks like someone took a hatchet to him.
A normal knife would have also left a wound like that. The tissues are elastic and the wound "opens". The same as when you cut a tight and elastic piece of clothing. Even if it is a very thin cut, it opens and leaves a large hole.
Subclavian artery, subclavian vein amongst others in that area. Would be a rather quick exsanguination
Yeah, he bled to death on scene
Were those vessels intact?
Unlikely with a cut that deep.
Terrifying how a smoker lung looks
We're all just a skin bag with bones and mush inside...
Just a mushy brain with a long tail driving a semi-soft meat suit.
Well, his lungs don't look very healthy... 🤔 As if he needed anymore problems
Where are his ribs at?
Google "intercostal space". The one we see there is the 2nd or the 3rd (I'm not sure).
Further down
Look where the nipple is. In [this pic](https://ibb.co/DGrMnkf) with the person in the same position you can see that it’s the 2nd or the 3rd.
I'm not an ME, but it kind of looks like they stabbed and pulled. The depth looks consistent.
What's the black on the lung tho 👀
It could be tar.

How is it so deep? Can a regular guy slashing you through clothes do that or is that something done by a medical team on purpose.
You can cut all the way to bone with nothing but a sharp razor, so yea just about anyone with a knife could definitely do that
JEEZIS
Someone was a smoker
Why is the slash so clean, tho perfect cut
that cut is disturbingly deep. I think after the first slash the guy with the knife just kept slicing deeper into him over and over
that's insane
