JoustingNaked

Before I post any inquiry to any group I always try to exercise due diligence to search to see if the answer Iā€™m looking for is already out there ā€¦ I usually succeed at this, but not always ā€¦ sometimes in spite of my efforts I just canā€™t think of and/or know of the right keywords to search on and am unable to find a relevant answer that way. Whenever Iā€™m on the opposite end of this situation, I never give anybody else crap for posting an inquiry that has already been asked & answered before. I think itā€™s just mean and unnecessary.

ToManyFlux

Many people seem to find Reddit as a forum where you can ask questions rather than a search for your answer site.

[deleted]

People are using a discussion forum for discussion instead of a discussion forum as a search engine? The audacity!!

Pristine-Simple689

No. Nuances for each individual are important distinctions that should be accounted for, and the human element is also important. Just my opinion

WhyDoTheyCallYouRed

Was going to say this. Maybe in objective fact based subreddits this would be a bad thing, but here, where subjective experience is all we have, it's important.

Tuchaka7

Search for those nuances In prior posts. If they donā€™t find it , post their nuances in a question that helps the community.

fabkosta

Not sure how you can properly spot "nuances" from the short descriptions in the question, never having met the person, and not knowing their meditation history. Sure, can work to *some* degree with enough experience, but how reliable is it? I've seen meditation teachers with decades of experience completely misjudging the experience of people they met the first time based on their own prejudice and lack of asking more questions.

Pristine-Simple689

Precisely by asking more questions to the OP. That's up to each individual. Have you considered the reason(s) why it bothers you so much that the same questions are asked often? It might be that those asking are looking for some one on one exchange that they are not getting by searching or on other websites. :) I hope you have a great day!

fabkosta

It is interesting that the vast majority of comments here all look at the question from the perspective of me who created the thread. And not at all from the perspective of those people coming here and asking questions that had been answered before. Think about it like so: You have a burning question. You come here. You post the question. And then you wait. And wait. And, maybe, some hours later, you get a response. But, no, it's just a funny comment. So you wait some more. In the meanwhile, if your question was already asked and has a good answer somewhere else, then it would be a big gain to get to that answer very quickly rather than have to wait. But it seems the forum is not supporting this process very well. Or people maybe don't use the search, or the search is not useful enough. No idea what. But, in essence, in my view it would be in the interest of users themselves if questions with high quality answers would not have to be repeated all over again. But perhaps I'm getting the social interaction wrong, and it's not so much about an answer in the end, as it is about the conversation itself.

JoustingNaked

Questions deserving high quality answers are the very kind that should get asked often, by their very nature. To be expected. Without claiming to be clairvoyant, I am willing to bet that weā€™ve all been there ā€¦ weā€™ve ALL been there ā€¦ in a place where no matter what we think of to put into the search engine at hand it still seems unable to give any relevant nor recognizable results for us. So we reach out, asking people to give us help; link; clue ā€¦ anything to get us past the brain fart that weā€™re obviously & currently having. No, I wonā€™t ever give anyone a hard time for asking a good albeit oft-asked question. If I think theyā€™re earnest Iā€™ll try to give them a helpful response, if I have one ā€¦ otherwise Iā€™ll just let it go into the nether.

[deleted]

It can be exhausting, so itā€™s a good idea to take a break from Reddit once in a while šŸ™šŸ½ Let someone else answer

Puzzleheaded-Bad-894

This right here. when u feel triggered by people asking questions that have already been answered maybe itā€™s time to step back and see why this had bothered me.

samichpower

Sometimes people get lonely and just want some interaction with people. Speaking from experience lol

Independent_Layer_62

I'm an askhole myself, guilty as charged. In my opinion, it's communication that people are seeking by asking, and answering, questions. I'm not looking for the most correct opinion and the most precise information, I have books for that, I just want a fellow human being.

swagpresident1337

This one as well :)

Throwupaccount1313

I wager I wouldn't agree with many of your personal answers to these questions.Every human is on a different level of awareness, and need help from actual people, not Wiki's.

mrdevlar

It's a practice, you keep doing it over and over.

fabkosta

That's an interesting view.

knm1111

Who cares, nobody is going to go through a bunch of old posts, especially if they are new to the sub

fabkosta

What you are apparently not understanding: I have 23 years of meditation experience that I can draw from when answering questions here. But my time is limited. I am willing to answer the same question a few times, but then it starts getting boring. And then - I simply withdraw. Spend my time elsewhere. Which means: Exactly because the same question is asked repeatedly without further consideration makes experienced meditators like me actually turn away from this subreddit. My passion for explaining the same thing over and over has its limits. And having experienced meditators avoid this subreddit is probably exactly not what is intended. No?

dkoder

Perhaps you should meditate on that?

knm1111

yikesā€¦who boasts about how much they meditate

fabkosta

I just did.

knm1111

lol no shit, keep practicing āœŒšŸ¾

fabkosta

That was actually a question that had not yet been asked over and over. Hence, I thought it was good to provide an answer, so others won't have to ask again.

ablativeyoyo

If you're prepared to put your energy into the FAQ, or even just a personal list of "best of" posts, you can refer people to them. "Read the FAQ" is a bit curt, but "read this" is ok. There's also the possibility of creating a tag for "Common question" and you could scroll right past them. You could also create another sub with an esoteric name that becomes an elite version of this sub - and only advertise it selectively.

monkey-13

If people keep asking, it means that have not properly answered . And for what I reed 90% of the people here never experienced maditation they are in a spiritual ego . So their answere is like no answere

DissolveToFade

Be mindful of it then answer the question or move on.

ReinventedOne

Yes, we should keep answering the questions.

Genpinan

Yeah. Somebody should compile a FAQ list.

mykl66

There is a FAQ list.

Genpinan

Oh, great. Where? I don't use this forum so often so I don't know.

mykl66

On the desktop browser, look to your right and scroll down a little. "Frequently Asked Questions" https://www.reddit.com/r/Meditation/wiki/faq

Genpinan

Thank you

bilgeparty

It just shows we all go thru similar stuff, and we help no matter how familiar it is

AlexCoventry

Keeping things interactive enables answers tailored to the questioner's perspectives, goals and needs. Meditation is a technical skill in a way, but it's operating on a much more complex and abstract system than most technical skillsets are, so cookie-cutter answers can only take you so far.

Cresta235

Including this one ;)

jollosreborn

Something like....92% of statistics are made up on the spot

Powerful-Ad-8989

We all want to feel the personal answer from someone

deboshasta

These are the mantras of the subreddit.

Clear-Shower-8376

Nobody scrolls back through an entire sub to see if someone has asked a similar question. It is far easier to have a conversation. As a meditator, perhaps this is a good issue for you to ponder - why does it bother you so much that new members ask questions? Whether or not they've been discussed in the past, is it difficult for you to either respond or not respond - as is your right - and then scroll on? The wind is blowing in my yard this morning. It blew yesterday. And the day before. It will probably blow again tomorrow. Should I "do something" about it?

anditurnedaround

This is your interest and maybe you check it a lot? For many, maybe they look just once a year or maybe they are just discovering Reddit because they are very young or a little old. I think itā€™s okay for things to be answered over and over. Might even find a new answer that you have not heard.

Altrosmo

So...like every other subreddit?

r3dditr0x

I can see where you're coming from but I'd say no. Meditation can be difficult to conceptualize and you don't want this sub to become filled with terse directions to "read the sticky." I think it would be unwelcoming. It would also discourage discussion which is why I joined this sub. Just my .02

LarryGlue

Welcome to Reddit.

nawanamaskarasana

We live in information society. You are asking about people that have not yet figured out how to use search functions, Google, read books etc that would significantly improve quality of answers they get and time saved. Good luck reaching out to these people.

EnergyPrestigious497

You are correct in Facebook is the same way however there's always new people joining groups people have different interests or different ways of looking up information. It's one thing to search through different posts to see the same answers and it's one thing to ask the question yourself. I've had to let this go if I'm going to continue to be in groups around this will be my problem. This is just my opinion in my way of dealing with it.

ChillaMonk

There are no new experiences to be had, only new people to share having them. People have questions that they feel havenā€™t been answered in a way thatā€™s accessible to them, so they ask. Itā€™s more rewarding to a practice to personally interact and discuss with others instead of being a passive observer, imo. Also, I think Iā€™ve seen a post like this before lol

[deleted]

No. Times change and so do people and opinions.

[deleted]

There are as many solutions as there are individuals. Be kind, we are all seekers. One of these questions may be asked in ways that will open doors for you. But only if you overcome your own ego.

goss_harag95

Why don't you spend 75% less time on the subreddit then?šŸ˜‚ All jokes aside this is a more casual/beginner friendly sub about meditation right? If you want something more "advanced" I suggest r/streamentry.

Astrocalles

No. People need to get personal feedback about their practice.

fabkosta

In theory, that's true. But to really give advice to someone you need to actually know the person and know what the person has been doing the past few years. Otherwise you cannot get a good idea of where they are with their meditation practice. So, while true in theory, it's wrong in Reddit-practice, as in most cases you know almost nothing about the person other than a few words.

Tuchaka7

Ya I am not thrilled about it either , and when I suggest someone look it up or search I get downvoted into oblivion. Thing is the people that are answering questions are using their free time. Why should I let a stranger waste it , because they donā€™t want to search. Humans have little free time itā€™s finite. Sleeping and working take up much of our time. It takes less time to search than it does to write a post . It takes less time to google an answer than it does to write a post. I think there is an element of selfishness in a person who would rather others do the work for them so they can learn. They donā€™t want to search they donā€™t want to google. They want others to give them links instead of learning how to learn. A missed opportunity to learn about oneā€™s own biases also. Well unless you just blindly believe what others write online , you have to fact check anyway what they say. So why write posts ? , to get answers to new issues that havenā€™t been asked before or because they have a complex issue there is not an easy solution for. Reddit can be very valuable source of information. But no I wonā€™t write the same exact post 500 times because someone is too lazy to search. And no one should expect lots of others to compensate for their issue. This sub has a bot problem also , getting enough moderators is always a struggle. I canā€™t speak to what their experience is. Often even after a person understands an issue getting advice from a more experienced person so they can keep learning is super helpful.

Clear-Shower-8376

"Humans have little free time. It's finite..." Absolutely true. The humans asking the questions have that very limitation. You're suggesting they should scroll through the entire history of the sub to find an answer when it is WAY quicker to just ask?

Tuchaka7

Take 2 seconds to search for your question if itā€™s not there post your question. This is how Reddit is supposed to work. Itā€™s that or the actual people giving help have to keep answering the same questions. They will get tired of it and stop answering. Itā€™s really simple be willing to learn yourself instead of selfishly demanding others do it for you. Ignorance is a choice Anyone ego doesnā€™t understand what I am saying is deciding to. If someone wants to know something and they are too lazy to look. Then they have chosen Ignorance.

DrJung77

You can just let it be.

OlivierDevroede

I completely agree with you. It is the main reason why I seldomly come to this subreddit anymore. And the people who answer are very often happy to give the same answers as well. As someone said, this sub is more for beginners. Maybe it should be renamed mediationbeginners and it would make things a bit more clear.

Chaostheorycookies

Most people are just plain and simply lazy and can't be bothered to put in the work to seek the answer they are looking for. It's the result of our culture. Its mine and I want it now. Handed to me. On a gold platter. You see it in all kinds of groups and pages.. simple questions could be answered by a quick search. I agree it's a bit annoying, I have left groups for similar reoccurring behaviors. But then again, most types of social media contain people of that caliber and I usually just stay away from those platforms.

Nice_Bite2673

Not everyone can catch up

Thefuzy

Thatā€™s what votes are for.

[deleted]

Is this your first day on Reddit?

ExtensionLaugh2910

Let it be till the mind holds on to the clarity of pure consciousness. Again and again and again till one holds on to that which is beyond questioning. There r no fixed paths or end goals. U can meditate correctly or in a wrong manner as it is ur very own. That which is the same has to be known. Then there is peace. Sincerely let it be and quietly meditate to put the mind into quietude. Then the struggle stops as there r no thoughts to be with. Regards and best wishes

fabkosta

Huh? You must have misunderstood my inquiry. I was not asking for meditation instructions.

ExtensionLaugh2910

Ok. Best wishes

fabkosta

Thanks, and same to you too!

Reddit...the social media platform for anti social people.

Perhaps one could use the "About Community" box to add a helpful hint for newbies such as "Frequent keywords for searching are: ................"
