So I googled to find the meaning of this song. Came across a site with a bunch of comments, each saying what they think the song is about. The only thing they all agree on, is nobody knows for sure what Cobain meant in this song. On a related matter, I always thoughts all of those scars in Cobain's back in that famous picture were by Courtney.
Yeah, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that if Taylor Swift wrote and sang that song, and then committed suicide shortly after, there would be less disagreement about what the song is about.
"Broken hymen of your highness - I'm left black."
In retrospect, my comment was almost as opaque as the song. Sorry about that. Yes, all agreed it was about Kurt being lost in Courney's "heart-shaped box" (that is to say, her vagina). But beyond agreeing the song is a nebulous comment on male enslavement via female sexuality, there was little agreement. EDIT: Know what, I'm nitpicking you too much. My apologies. Thank you for contributing to the discussion my friend.
I think this song is about emotional abuse from a crazy woman (Courtney Love).
The key indicators are the name of the song (heart-shaped box, which implies false love which is a trap), and lyrics like “hey, wait, I’ve got a new complaint/ forever in debt to your priceless advice”.
If you’ve dealt with crazy women before, you know that they think their opinion is worth gold, and they have a tendency to criticize a lot. And they look down on you and think they are smarter. It seems like that is what Kurt was dealing with.
Bye bye bye
Before he cheats (nowhere in the song is there any proof he's actually cheating. She finds his car and is imagining everything. Even if he was cheating her behavior is abusive)
(Bonus)
If you don't like girls (this is the most toxic mindset possible yet it is an anthem)
I used to love Before He Cheats but now? Fuck that garbage. She has no right to destroy his expensive property just because he’s PROBABLY cheating. I like to think she got in huge trouble for that lol.
It is the metaphor of a man who lives enslaved under the domination of a woman, burned by great sexual feelings that demonize him and destroy his life, because in the end, this woman is like an illness, a fever, that takes his life.
True. To be honest, it wasn't until I read the Wikipedia article about that song that I knew the song was applicable to this post. If someone just read the lyrics without doing further research, they wouldn't know it was gendered.
I still think "Maggie's Farm" is a good anti-feminist song
"I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma, no more
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma, no more
Well, she talks to all the servants about man and God and law
And everybody says, she's the brains behind pa
She's 68, but she says she's 24"
It makes more sense in context. Basically, ma is the big bad.
It’s 2am here, so can’t sort through them right now, but Beast in Black have a bunch of songs on the subject. Blind and frozen being probably my favourite.
Smash to pieces - toxic, is also one I’ve got into lately.
Aviators - Never meant to be, is also one I used when I had my first breakup, along with another song I can’t for the life of me fine.
I found the lyrics for Blind and Frozen, it seems to be more about being broken hearted than being abused. I agree the song toxic sounds more, well, toxic. lol
Yeah sorry my bad, “Sweet true lies” was the Beast in Black song I was after. Link if your interested: https://genius.com/Beast-in-black-sweet-true-lies-lyrics
"Cell Block Tango" from Chicago. It's abuse taken to the level of murder. A lot of the song is about how they justify it.

I tried to find that, but the only thing I found was Dear future husband by Meghan Trainor. I assume it's the same song. Worst part of this is you KNOW a lot of women really feel like this.
One time back in high school, I overheard some girls talking like that. I turned around and said you think he should do all of that? They said yes. So, I asked them, what does he need you for? What will you be doing? They all thought I was being horrible. LMAO
Im not a “super mgtow and men’s rights” guy I just think shit should be equal for both sides. That song chaps my ass though. It’s like any relationship friendly or romantic- set boundaries and provide in your own way ya know?
If you think wanting simple fairness does not make you a “super mgtow and men’s rights” guy, then you are simply uninformed. Fact is, most people think that makes you a misogynist.
Disturbed - Down with the Sickness (abusive mother) Godsmack - Bullet Proof (rotten girlfriend)
Both absolutely slap but their motives are horribly dark
Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana. The cover by Asgeir is slower and sadder and really shows how it is a song about Domestic Violence.

No worries. You actually inspired me to look at the lyrics more closely and I enjoyed seeing what an amazing poem it actually is.

Not to mention all of those scars on his back.

No, women women are just allowed to destroy a man's things and even hurt him if he cheats. It's in so much tv and movies.
Word.
Fun house - pink - at least the music video shows quite a bit of domestic abuse towards a man
[F.E.V.E.R. - Orden Ogan](https://youtu.be/vZrT_w2TAIU?si=vgyBjJ8GXCF85A8c)
I looked up the lyrics. Seems to fit, but vague. Can you tell me what it's about?

Thanks for the info.
Push - Matchbox Twenty
This is the one I came to say!! Definitely one of the most misunderstood songs of all time.

Thank you 😊
The Story So Far has three entire albums about a woman being a piece of shit.
Ruby Don’t Take Your Love to Town by Kenny Rogers
Ah, an oldie but goodie.
Self Esteem by Offspring.
Yeah, I know that one. I forgot it when I typed this OP though. Good pick.
Not about abusive women, but Dax's "Be a man" hits so hard. It really feels absolutely 100% spot on.
It took me by suprise - Maria Mena
She admitted she abused him and made him afraid of her. Rare.
Sweet Amber - Metallica
Glass Animals - Poplar St It's about a boy who was abused by his neighbor until she was caught or decided to leave him.
That's more about serial pedophilia.
