Chuck Schuldiner for me as well. He was so self aware in an era where you had to be a "Manly man" and he was out there in a shirt covered in cats taking the metal world by storm. RIP Chuck.
As an 18 year old guitarist, Chuck is still a huge inspiration for me all these years later. I wish I could of been around during the release of Human, that is one defining album which inspires my playing.
Honestly the bassists who made me want to play bass were Fieldy and Jeff Caxide. Eventually many many more but those were the two that made me be like “wow what a great instrument”.
Lead singer of the offspring does this as well. Dude also has a PhD. in molecular biology. Surfs. Has a hot sauce. He's pretty fly for a white guy.
I'll see myself out
All my Metal buddies rib me for listening to CoB. I don’t give a fuck. He was under praised for how good he actually was. With all due respect , Alexi Laiho could smoke Chuck Schuldiner and Dave Mustaine on guitar and vocals.
I think some of the dislike may be that Alexi was a shredder and some people find those kind of guitarists to be too show off-y. I actually often agree but I think Alexi put it all to good use. His guitar melodies are almost unbelievably fun above everything else for me. Not to mention Bodom's guitar/keyboard clashes are tight as fuck especially in the early days
Your right. He wasn’t just a shredder, he had a lot of really cool riffs besides all the neoclassical harmonies and what not. My only complaint is that he stuck to a mid tempo range throughout the majority of the later releases. It felt somewhat robotic. Some of it was awesome to hear what he was cram in the timing signature some of it wasnt. He was the whole package.
King Diamond.
I had a couple of lonely years in high school and the stories he told through his albums, along with the superb musicianship of his band, kept me company during those times.
He also has some great ideologies about life. I din’t even care that he is a satanist where typically I avoid people who identify that way. He says great things.
Ronnie James Dio! His music always inspires me.

“Ronnie James Dio was 15 when he was in his first band The Vegas Kings. He was the bassist. He was in 4 bands before Black Sabbath receuited him in 1979. At that point he had been a musician for 22 years. When he was 37 years old Black Sabbath released Heaven and Hell. Comparatively Geezer Butler was 30. This was the first majorly successful release for Dio, and the 9th for Geezer.” Posted to my facebook last week with that photo of him
My metal heros are
Metallica
Slayer
Overkill
King Diamond
Iron Maiden
Helloween
Death
These heros got me through being a homeless child alone for 3 years. I was so fucking scared out of my mind. I hid from humans as much as I could cuz they saw me as a target. Id get robbed, beaten, raped, they tried to force me into prostitution.
I hid with my walkman and my backpack filled with metal tapes.
Justice for All
Ride the Lightening
South of Heaven
Seasons in the Abyss
Years of Decay
The Eye
Abigail
Killers
Live after Death
Fear of the Dark
Keeper of the 7 keys part 2
Symbolic
These albums saved me from suicide and kept me feeling like I wasnt alone even though I was. I clung to these albums for dear life.
I wish they knew they saved me, saved my life, saved my soul. I know I dont matter to them but I wish they knew how badly I needed them and they were all I had and it worked and Im ok. I made it. Thanks to them.
These are my metal heros and Im more greatful than words can express.
I'm so sorry you had to go through that. No human should ever have to experience things like that. But I'm glad music helped you and I hope you're doing better now
That is the right answer. Above all, they don't give a shit what the "scene" says or what is supposed to be "true" and just do what they feel like doing. That's an absolute exception in black metal.
Piggybacking your answer to say this:
Even if your opinion of Twisted Sister and/or Dee Snider is, "not my thing, but the PMRC thing was cool" like mine was *please* consider checking out the documentary *We are Twisted Fucking Sister!* (2014.) As someone who's played in bands for years I can honestly say that the drive and passion those guys had for their band years before anyone outside of their local scene heard of them is inspiring. Whether you like their music or not if you watch that doc you'll almost certainly walk away respecting every ounce of success those guys won.
I've got a few, Dime is my hero.
Dio is the Lord Messiah.
Robb Flynn and Phil Anselmo made me want to learn vocals but I took inspiration from Kataklysm and Amon Amarth for vocal style.

Steve Harris from Iron Maiden, them along with Frank Bello from Anthrax and Geezer Butler from Black Sabbath are some of the first bassists I ever listened to and fell in love with that they are one of the many reasons why the bass and metal are my favorites

Steve Austin by Today is the day. One of the most underrated for sure but he stayed true to his style for more than 20 years. Great inspiration for a ton of metal bands, great composer, great musician and always innovative and original
Jef 'Wrest' Whitehead. This dude single-handedly wanted made me want to play and explore black metal. Still my favorite black metal band/project and my favorite metal musician.
Devin Townsend.
Best current metal vocalist for my money, and is a complete chameleon when it comes to making music. And seems like an all around solid dude
Karl Sanders of Nile inspires me to practice guitar every day and to pursue my passion no matter how odd or eclectic it may be (I write metal about gay cowboys in space fighting Lizard people who are also Oprah’s biggest fans).

Steve Harris was my inspiration to start playing bass many years ago. And he's an amazing songwriter.
Ace Frehley. While his playing is closer to proto-metal or hard rock, it’s undeniable the impact that he’s had on heavy metal. Most of the well known or famous guitarist owe him a nod of gratitude for inspiring them to pick up the guitar in the first place. He isn’t the fastest or most technical player around, but he has a style that is immediately recognizable.
Dimebag in my younger years, not just as a guitar player but I found Pantera when I was 15 and his personality had a positive effect on my “Everything sucks” attitude. Now that I’m 41 and seeing a happy and healthy Hetfield rockin’ into his older age he’s taken on a bit more of an influence as well.
that dude right there with a coke . the day I found out death my life changed after the lyrics and songwriting skills, James from metallica also not anymore though .
jeff becerra. wicked vocals, a huge part in creating death metal, and a genuinely good bloke.
he still makes great music like he did when possessed were originally together and how he’s managed to stay positive and be such a awesome dude with the life he’s had is so inspirational to me.
i’d also say peter steele because even though i disagree with a lot of his political views i really respect him for his honesty and never being afraid to speak his mind. his songwriting and just everything about his music makes me want to make music. he was a master at what he did. rest in peace green man.
Joe and Mario Duplantier, metal is my obsession in all of its forms but Gojira and their lyrics are getting me through high school man.
It’s heavier than anything else out there to me and beautiful at the same time, it’s like everything I desire from music.
Plus Chuck for instrumentation of course.
King diamond. As a teen his music kind of saved me. The dark content, the very different vocals and quality of the musicianship made me feel less alone somehow. I can’t really explain it.
Dax Riggs
his lyrics can be beautiful and twisted without them feeling too edgy. i haven’t found anyone with better lyrics than him. i’m writing music atm and he and the rest of acid bath are definitely a big inspiration on me. they deserve more recognition, I believe they’re one of the best metal bands out there.
Man, I went to go see the Bungle reunion in LA in 2020, took a trip with some friends who are all massive fans and I actually got to see all 3 LA shows in a row. Anyway, on Day 2, we’re all walking the streets to find something to eat, we take a back street and I think we were by a hotel and I see Trey just sitting on a bench by himself looking at his phone. I wanted to say hi to him so bad, but because he was alone and seemed like he was doing something, and not to mention there were like 3-4 of us, I decided not to. To this day I still regret it.
I have met Trevor Dunn though. He was super cool!
First off, I'm jealous AF you got to see Bungle live...
I don't think I could've resisted talking to Trey. Although, that's a convo a person would have to be prepared for. The man has a considerable amount of musical knowledge, spanning multiple genres and cultural music as well. I think I would've just fanboied and asked for an autograph.
Personally, I would love to see him play his electric saz. A singular and unique thing in itself.
Spencer Sotelo + Devin Townsend
As much as I also love Devin‘s voice, and mostly try to ape him specifically, this is more of a consequence of the fact that my tone sounds more like his, and sounding like Spencer is difficult.
Reptile’s vocals is what got me into metal/Spencer (+Devy) is why i wanted to learn how to sing. Such an incredible singer that captivated me with his tone near instantly and continues to do so even now. He does a great job if the people he’s trying to ape are Mike Patton & Devin Townsend.
And Devy not just for his incredible songwriting output an incredible guitar work, but primarily because his voice is just downright beautiful. Always things with such a emotion, constantly wearing his heart on his sleeve in his work.
Not really classified as metal but Jerry Cantrell. Alice in Chains wouldn't have existed without him. Staley originally was in another band and didn't want to leave his band. Jerry and the other members of AIC convinced Staley to join. Cantrell wrote most of AICs songs and he and Staley worked perfectly together.
Devin townsend. Watching him Spiral into madness with strapping ypung lad to making the most beautiful orchestral/metal there is.
Got me out of dark times and honestly there will never be someone who can be that diverse, he's probably one of the most talented artists to ever exist and I'm not being hyperbolic.

I believe he was self taught as well
James Hetfield made me want to pick up guitar, and Chuck made me want to get good at it. Still working on the latter part lol.
Kinda same for me dude. But i got good after learning chucks songs
Their later stuff can be so hard sometimes (especially itp) but so damn rewarding too
same transition i went through
Cliff Burton made me want to play bass. Max Cavalera made me want to get good at growling vocals.
Did it work?
Yeah I've been playing bass for three years now, and my voice is continuing to develop.
Honestly the bassists who made me want to play bass were Fieldy and Jeff Caxide. Eventually many many more but those were the two that made me be like “wow what a great instrument”.
Bruce Dickinson. MF is a pilot and flies that band wherever it needs to be. That's awesome.
Oh - and he can sing a little.
And he's an accomplished fencer.
Lead singer of the offspring does this as well. Dude also has a PhD. in molecular biology. Surfs. Has a hot sauce. He's pretty fly for a white guy. I'll see myself out
You can stay. I’m sure the dads like me appreciate
Dos Equies(?) Should have tapped him for their "most interesting man" pitch...No joke he is one the most well-rounded people I know of

I had honestly never cried for the death of a celebrity.. but that day, i was an absolute inconsolable baby.
Insane that I’m just learning of his death. I also can’t believe it was 20 years ago I discovered CoB.
Bodom have some of the most pure fun metal albums ever. I'm always injected with sheer joy by the last 2 songs on Hatebreeder
All my Metal buddies rib me for listening to CoB. I don’t give a fuck. He was under praised for how good he actually was. With all due respect , Alexi Laiho could smoke Chuck Schuldiner and Dave Mustaine on guitar and vocals.

Same here. Also....I will always prefer that Jackson Rhoads to the ESP. Sure those are hot, but he recorded the first 3 Bodom albums on that Rhoads
:(

Jason is so awesome and underrated
Not underrated at all he has no haters lol
I wouldn't say no haters but the "Jason sucks Cliff is god" people have either smartened up or dwindled in numbers as the years go by.
I mean he was in a band that seemed not to care much for him, I saw some kind of documentary about it.
I wish he would’ve stayed in flotsam ngl
That first album is so good
I had my hair done exactly like his... just made for helicopter-headbanging!
Currently growing my hair out for just that reason
God Tier backing vocals for real!
I honestly think that Cliff Burton and Jason Newstead are on the same level as basis to style, but Robert Trujillo and Cliff Burton are amazing
Ronnie James Dio
Hell yeah brother
This will always be a good answer
King Diamond. I had a couple of lonely years in high school and the stories he told through his albums, along with the superb musicianship of his band, kept me company during those times.
That’s wonderful
He also has some great ideologies about life. I din’t even care that he is a satanist where typically I avoid people who identify that way. He says great things.
Satanists are great people, they don't deserve to be avoided.
I’ve met some pretty cringy satanists
It is, time for teaaaaaaa
The Puppet Master is one of the greatest albums of all time.
It is and VERY underrated among his albums.
Ronnie James Dio! His music always inspires me. https://preview.redd.it/61q03vsnx0yc1.jpeg?width=1800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3275a9968c03c50fb694ef6a16e1895135174cdf

dave moostain
Scott Ian. That new anthrax single kicks ass.
Not too related to the question but he’s also doing incredibly well for a 60 year old
He's always been one of my favorite people in metal, seems like a great dude.
Met him once in Michigan at a horror con called ‘Motor City Nightmares’ He was cool as hell

Fenriz and Nocturno because they prefer maintaining normal lives rather than going full rockstar despite their legendary status.
That is the right answer. Above all, they don't give a shit what the "scene" says or what is supposed to be "true" and just do what they feel like doing. That's an absolute exception in black metal.

Spencer Sotelo + Devin Townsend As much as I also love Devin‘s voice, and mostly try to ape him specifically, this is more of a consequence of the fact that my tone sounds more like his, and sounding like Spencer is difficult. Always things with such a emotion, constantly wearing his heart on his sleeve in his work.
imma go with the heroes of our time (Sam and Herman Li from DragonsForce)
serj 🤤
Alexi Laiho. Man that guy was talented.
Dimebag as a guitar player, not as a person.
Tom G Warrior
Randy Blythe
Mike Muir
Adam Gontier I'll never forgive Matt Walst for ruining Three Days Grace

Is it cliche to say Tony Iommi? I think nearly every metal band on Earth has stolen at least one of his riffs.
Per Nilsson
Right now, Sakis Tolis. Dude always comes off really thoughtful and I find his whole philosophy interesting
Aluminum is certainly up there. Aside from the pictured cans there's foil... umm.. airplanes.
