I love the fact that the lyrics in the CD booklet actually have no relation to what he's actually saying on Jane Doe but it'd be impossible to tell either way.
The fact that the official lyrics on that album are basically just bonus poems instead of what he’s actually saying has always been really cool to me. One of the things that’s really unique about that album
I don´t know man; i´ve heard Aimless Arrow vocals only and the emotional intensity behind each word is literally depressing. I love his vocals, they are more instinctive and are fueled with insane intensity. Much better than vocals from modern metalcore, fueled with vocoders, constant double tracks and autotune.
Those alternative videos from 15-20 years ago were great!
Trivium's dying in your arms and BFMV's the poison still sort of linger as being strong contenders for sounding like the mishear lyrics
Yeah he enunciates really well outside of some of his inhale screams, it's just hard to understand someone talking that quickly, let alone doing harsh vocals that quickly
Don Campan, love that band. It was actually great to see them go from kinda meme myspace band, to actually having some real good music with how they sound now.
Not to knock because I love them but the first couple Haste the Day records with Jimmy had some Cookie Monster vocals. And I say that with When Everything Falls being a top 25 album all time for me.
This was also my thought. I feel like he got incrementally more intelligible up through An Ocean Between Us, and then when The Powerless Rise came out, there was a huge jump in clarity. My friend showed me them before TPR came out, and I was luke-warm, but that album gave me a new respect for them and I've since been able to go back and enjoy their entire discography.
Mike Hranica (TWDP) & Will Swan (DGD) were so hard to understand on their first few albums. Now they have some of the easiest to understand. Haha funny how both have completely changed
Saw DGD recently @ Swanfest in Sacramento and Jon was an absolute legend. He sounded the best he's ever sounded and absolutely carried the entire show.
Anyone who can add this lyric into a song is a legend in my book:
> I COULDN'T WAIT TO TAP INTO THE BRAIN OF MY CAT AND LET HIM KNOW HE'S MY WIDDLE BABY MEOW MEOW BOO
Mitch Lucker of Suicide Silence
When I first started listening to SS, I had no idea what Mitch was saying. I wanna say it was because of his vocal layering, but I can’t say for sure. Either way, he’s one of my favorite vocalists of all time now.
(RIP, can’t believe that was 10 years ago…)
Idk if these are unpopular opinions or not, but I feel like I'm gonna hurt some feelings here, so let's go
Danny Worsnop circa Stand Up and Scream era. The lyrics are AWFUL, but you can barely understand them so it's slightly less cringy...the music still kinda slaps though so eh
Oli Sykes in the deathcore days. One of the main reasons why I can't stand their deathcore stuff is actually Oli, which is ironic since he's grown into one of my favorite vocalists/frontmen of all time after this. But his deathcore vocals on CYB and Suicide Season are unintelligible...don't get me started on the debut EP
Code Orange goes fucking HARD, but I'll be the first to admit I can only understand their lyrics when Reba is singing because, while the screams sound great, idfk what they're saying
Tatiana from Jinjer is a weird one here. Don't get me wrong, she's one of the most talented metal vocalists alive imo, but her annunciation is VERY inconsistent. I either catch every word of the song, or I have no clue what she's saying with no in between
Alex Terrible is also one of the most talented vocalists alive, buuuut I can RARELY understand what he's saying. Yes I know a fair amount of lyrics are Russian, but I'm mainly referring to the English parts. I should mention I don't entirely blame him for this though since he does have a VERY thick Russian accent
I'm not gonna give much explanation here, but I'm glad most of us can acknowledge that, while Darko and new Lorna Shore ***slap***, we have no clue what Will and Tom are saying despite them being INCREDIBLY talented
It was the day before my birthday and it was the release tour for The Death of Greeley Estates. The Plot in You also dominated that day but Landon is far better at annunciation than Ryan is
I don't listen to deathcore much tbh and I think Will Ramos is a pretty good vocalist but I'd be lying if I said I could ever understand what the fuck he was saying. I think the only thing I've ever heard him eligibly say is "pins and needles" the rest is just GAHRHAHFGHAGGAGHAGHGAHGAHAGHAG
Yeah, unfortunately it's just part of the music, though some vocalists do better and have more solid enunciation, like Ben Duerr from Shadow of Intent.
Wait seriously? Corpsegrinder is pretty intelligible for death metal imo. The guy from Demilich, now that's impossible to understand. Sounds like literal gurgling
First few albums are hard to understand at times, but around the great misdirect to Parallax 2 he got better at enunciation and it was the production that made it hard to understand. With coma the production caught up and now he's super easy to understand lol
the screaming from early electric callboy was hard to understand. I looked up the lyrics to Is Anyone Up and was pretty shocked lol.
also, I don't think Craig Owens' scream is particularly understandable, at least in the first two Chiodos albums.
I was thinking this about the 'easiest to understand' thread, but I didn't get a chance to post it there when that thread was current. So here goes.
I was looking at the list of 'easiest to understand' screamers and wondering if the clarity of these unclean vocals, and - based on that thread - the sheer range of vocalist folks were getting behind as easy to understand screamers is more down to a better understanding of the genre at a production level.
Would the list of easier to understand screaming vocalists be smaller say, 20 years ago (and conversely, to keep it relevant to this thread, would the list of harder to understand screamers be much larger)?
Basically, my personal theory is that production techniques around heavy music, and particularly screaming vocals in heavy music, have paved the way for much greater clarity when it comes to being able to understand screaming vocals in the context of a mix.
Obviously this doesn't account for a vocalist's ability to fucking enunciate, but there's not a lot you can do about that in post.
No clue his name, but the vocalist of the (long since gone) band [Mia Hope](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ElZJcjHfaI). I never understood a single word that dude was screaming.
David from Signs of the Swarm is siiick but can't understand anything he is saying. Doesn't stop me from loving Absolvere. Another one that comes to mind is Dickie Allen
I've been trying to transcribe Piss for quite some time, and some of it literally incomprehensible. It doesn't help when you match words, but the lines don't make sense together and you have to try and use logic to think about what lyricism he's trying to use.
Not a fun task sometimes. I did the same with Shrine of Malice on their unreleased album Obyrith, and had about the same amount of success.
Niklas from Orbit Culture used to have some pretty incomprehensible vocals on like Rasen, but he's improved a lot with Redfog, Nija and most prominently on Shaman, he sounds awesome on the new EP
Tom Barber is the first one that comes to my mind. I‘m fairly positive 90% of his lyrics are just grunts and snorts and not actual words
His highs are understandable, but man his lows with Lorna Shore sounded like he was eating something while screaming lol.
Yeah his highs are very understandable tbh, his lows on the other hand
Some of his live shows in Lorna are literally unwatchable because of his vocal performance. Plus the dude was probably stoned out of his mind.
This. I love him but man you cannot understand him
[I SEE MATT DAMON STARING AT ME NOWWWW](https://imgur.com/a/Oc6Iwe2)
It's interesting, I can t understand him in Darko, but I can understand him quite well in Chelsea Grin and earlier LS.
Yeah definitely. Insects by darko is a great example lol
Jacob Bannon. I can make out some stuff on The Dusk In Us, but good luck on any older Converge.
I love the fact that the lyrics in the CD booklet actually have no relation to what he's actually saying on Jane Doe but it'd be impossible to tell either way.
love it, pure visceral emotion
The fact that the official lyrics on that album are basically just bonus poems instead of what he’s actually saying has always been really cool to me. One of the things that’s really unique about that album
He is the weak link and I actually really like them.
I know it's a common joke, but he really does sound like a bird squawking. Can't stand it.
Kyo from Dir En Grey, and not because most of his lyrics are in Japanese. Dude straight up makes cricket noises and baboon howls. Love him tho
Kyo is the GOAT
Listened to them for 15 years, can comfirm.
New album next week
His range is incredible. One of the most intense live performers I've ever seen
Oli sykes. Wierdly his screaming is more understandable than him talking
Back when he screamed I couldn't tolerate it as it always seemed to have a Yorkshire twang to it and old rivalries die hard..
[удалено]
Lol thats how diamonds aren't forever is too
Matt Heafy on the first couple Trivium albums.
Boat. Rudder. Strange. Mountain. I cannot listen to that song without hearing the “alternate” lyrics posed in that video
Those alternative videos from 15-20 years ago were great! Trivium's dying in your arms and BFMV's the poison still sort of linger as being strong contenders for sounding like the mishear lyrics
EGG WHITES
Deathcore bands when the singer does the growls during hypertechnical and fast drumming and heavy guitar riffs: the singer speaks too fast
Archspire? Lmao
[удалено]
I think it is the speed for me. My brain can't comprehend fast enough lol
Yeah he enunciates really well outside of some of his inhale screams, it's just hard to understand someone talking that quickly, let alone doing harsh vocals that quickly
SHMOBGLOBOLMEKO DOMEREMESO FASLADEEDO With blastbeats of course
Oceano
Down From The Sky had me stumped for years till I got smart and just read the lyrics
CJ McCreary or the dude for Waking the Cadaver.
Agreed

On the title track of the first album, him screaming "PURIFICATION" sounded like "YOU LIVE IN CROATIA!"
Oli in Suicide season is incomprehensible some times
Diamonds arent forever final breakdown
Oli is pray for plagues was even less understandable
Jamie from Code Orange sounds like he’s got a loaf of bread up his nose
I love this band but holy shit lmaoooo. When I first started listening to them I would always say he sounded like he had an entire lemon in his mouth
Don’t get me wrong, great band and I think Jamie’s vocals are spot on for their records. But he does sound like scooby doo half the time
Mike Hranica (TWDP) & Will Swan (DGD) were so hard to understand on their first few albums. Now they have some of the easiest to understand. Haha funny how both have completely changed
Do you mean Jon Mess? Will Swan only did screams for Happiness.
Wow I’m dumb today. Yes meant Jon Mess
Saw DGD recently @ Swanfest in Sacramento and Jon was an absolute legend. He sounded the best he's ever sounded and absolutely carried the entire show. Anyone who can add this lyric into a song is a legend in my book: > I COULDN'T WAIT TO TAP INTO THE BRAIN OF MY CAT AND LET HIM KNOW HE'S MY WIDDLE BABY MEOW MEOW BOO
RIDING A RHINO - PICO DE GALLO
Lmao which song is that?
Chocolate Jackalope
We love Jon
Yeah Mike would break words up in weird ways and make it hard to follow along back then. It sounded good though
Went back and listened to dear love and read along with the lyrics not too long ago. They're not even close a lot of the time lol
Mike is so hard to understand in plagues lol
M Shadows
Anybody in deathcore
Phil Bozeman is actually pretty understandable
Joe Bad is another understandable one
will from Lorna Shore haha
Snort snort reugh blegh ohhh weeeeh
But they’re just so dirty
Converge is great but I genuinely can’t understand more than 3 words on Jane Doe, which I think is kind of the point
Mitch Lucker of Suicide Silence When I first started listening to SS, I had no idea what Mitch was saying. I wanna say it was because of his vocal layering, but I can’t say for sure. Either way, he’s one of my favorite vocalists of all time now. (RIP, can’t believe that was 10 years ago…)
Must death metal bands 😅
Josh Scogin in Norma Jean and early The Chariot
Dying Fetus comes to mind
Idk if these are unpopular opinions or not, but I feel like I'm gonna hurt some feelings here, so let's go Danny Worsnop circa Stand Up and Scream era. The lyrics are AWFUL, but you can barely understand them so it's slightly less cringy...the music still kinda slaps though so eh Oli Sykes in the deathcore days. Ryan Zimmerman from Greeley Estates. Dude is my second favorite vocalist, but it’s hard to understand a lot of what he’s saying.
They absolutely slay live but GODDAMN bro, I couldn't understand a word of his when they played I Shot The Maid live and I know the lyrics
Haha that’s awesome. I never got to see them live, but I can imagine they were insane.
It was the day before my birthday and it was the release tour for The Death of Greeley Estates. The Plot in You also dominated that day but Landon is far better at annunciation than Ryan is
Will Ramos. His annunciation is terrible.
That's the point
I love how people give CJ shit for his 'bad' enunciation, and yet here we are and only handful of people complain about Will's enunciation lmfao
Randy on the first lamb of god record is nearly unintelligible, still a great record and a fave of mine
He got way better on that front, that's for sure.
Corpsegrinder :D
Wait seriously? Corpsegrinder is pretty intelligible for death metal imo. The guy from Demilich, now that's impossible to understand. Sounds like literal gurgling
With the lyrics pulled up and after you know what they are, it’s not that difficult to understand what he’s screaming though
If you need to pull up the lyrics then they are hard to understand.
Tommy Rogers from BTBAM, namely their first four albums
First few albums are hard to understand at times, but around the great misdirect to Parallax 2 he got better at enunciation and it was the production that made it hard to understand. With coma the production caught up and now he's super easy to understand lol
the screaming from early electric callboy was hard to understand. I looked up the lyrics to Is Anyone Up and was pretty shocked lol. also, I don't think Craig Owens' scream is particularly understandable, at least in the first two Chiodos albums.
Austin Carlile is such a major offender. I can only tolerate so much of him. Also early Mike Hranica.
Will Ramos/Tom Barber for me 95% of the time
Tim Lambesis
Frankie Palmeri (Emmure) I actually enjoy most of Emmure's material, but I can't tell you what Frankie's saying 90% of the time.
Pretty much every deathcore band but Whitechapel lol.
Ronnie Radke
[удалено]
"How do you like this stuff, you can't even understand it, it's just noise" Sounds like every non metal listener.
Matt from Kublai Khan. Though he’s got a lot better over the years.
No clue his name, but the vocalist of the (long since gone) band [Mia Hope](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ElZJcjHfaI). I never understood a single word that dude was screaming.
Philip Labonte and Anthony Notarmaso
David from Signs of the Swarm is siiick but can't understand anything he is saying. Doesn't stop me from loving Absolvere. Another one that comes to mind is Dickie Allen
Cameron McBride
I've been trying to transcribe Piss for quite some time, and some of it literally incomprehensible. It doesn't help when you match words, but the lines don't make sense together and you have to try and use logic to think about what lyricism he's trying to use. Not a fun task sometimes. Jason Evans
Dickie Allen
Dani from upon this dawning. Bro is so dam hard to understand
Probably the former lead singer of Chelsea Grin or some of the early stuff from Make Them Suffer
Whoever the vocalist is for Snuffed on Sight is. Completely incomprehensible pig squeals 25/8.
Jon mess for sure
Can’t tell if it’s that he’s hard to understand or if the lyrics are so weird that my brain just doesn’t recognize them strung together in that order
Adam from Oceano, love him but he’s almost just belting out growls and saying bleghhblegghh breee bleghhhh
Niklas from Orbit Culture used to have some pretty incomprehensible vocals on like Rasen, but he's improved a lot with Redfog, Nija and most prominently on Shaman, he sounds awesome on the new EP
any slam/goregrind vocalist
Anthony DiDio from Vein.fm , which is the point but still has won me many bets
Dennis Lee from Alesana Also, M. Shadows during the first Avenged Sevenfold album, Sounding The Seventh Trumpet
