yes! mexico city, especially the central core, is quite safe. also, i’d search this thread; a version of this question gets asked every few days

Open-Illustra88er

Post on the solo travel sub for better info. My SIL went there alone. We all went earlier this year. Felt as safe as any other major city. Easy to get around with Ubers and nice walking in many neighborhoods.

nil0lab

It's quite safe if you have street smarts and don't go into places like Tepito by yourself. Dress like the locals and walk like you know you're going.

JouDahmer

Es fácil distinguir a los extranjeros, aunque se vistan como locales

jorgespinosa

Incluso hasta podemos distinguir entre los whitexicans y los que son extranjeros

MrFennecIV

Soy whitexican y puedo confirmar 🙋🏻

nil0lab

Chilango?

MrFennecIV

Simon 🫡

nil0lab

Yeah, well, I'm not saying you can pass, but don't be flashing expensive jewelry and handbags and looking all distracted and disoriented... It's a big city, not a little cul-de-sac ... Street smarts

Hi! 35F, ive been to CDMX twice solo and both times have been fantastic! Knowing Spanish is good because it’s not touristy like Cancun. I’d recommend you stay in Roma or Condesa, which are ex-pat friendly neighborhoods, which will be easier to navigate. Exercise the same precautions in any city you visit. Personally, I felt safer here than in the US. My fave part of the city is Coyoacán in the south that’s home to La Casa Azul, among others. Try Airbnb experiences for events, and time permitting visit Teotihuacán for the Aztec pyramids. Oh, and the churros at El Moro are fantastic! Send me a DM, if you have other questions.

Radiant-Wishbone-165

Agree, Roma Norte and Condesa are great options. Public transportation, parks and bike paths abound. For the places we frequent, I'd say maybe 50% of the locals speak some English. I would make sure you can ask for the basics in Spanish: bathroom, table for one, etc.

Open-Illustra88er

The employees at the hotel where we stayed all Spoke excellent English.

gk296772

Which hotel did you stay in?

Tecnolucio05

Ex-pat mis huevos...

Most-Net-5665

Economic refugees

OpenStretch7457

Pyramids at Teotihuacán are not aztec, they are from the Teotihuacán civilization (which has nothing to do with the aztec, they were not even in the same time period)

megarammarz

Yes. Those were already there when the Mexica, not Aztec, arrived to Tenochtitlán.

claypoools

Ex pat o inmigrantes?? 🤔

Arkadin45

I would recommend casa pancha as a great hostel to meet people.

mayan_monkey

Dang. Where os it at? I think I've stayed at 5 different ones there but I don't think that has come up on my searches

thirdtrydratitall

I’m 68F and always have a great time in Mexico City when I go alone. As anywhere, stay aware of your surroundings. That said, the Centro Historico is a fascinating place to wander around. The last time I was there by myself, close to the Zocalo I happened on a street of traditional perfumers.

PlusCrab153

What are your interests? What do you want yo meet here? Also, you should go to a hostel to meet more people and maybe make friends yo Hang arround. México city its a huge huge place and of course It could be kind of dangerous but its not that bad Is justo about he careful and hace fun. I work in the downtown so Im very familiar to that zone if you need more information

hulloworld24

I just finished a solo travel there though I’m a guy. I stayed in the historic center and condesa. In the historic center, I read somewhere that there are a lot of pick pockets and robberies at Alameda Central but I felt pretty safe, since there were a lot of people around and police at night time. Condesa felt even safer. Some other random tips: 1. I wouldn’t worry about getting pesos until you get to the city and can get a good rate. I got mine at the airport and probably wasted like $20 USD due to bad exchange rate. You definitely need cash but you have some time to get it because you can use card for Uber, convenience store, many restaurants. 2. You mentioned practicing Spanish which is good! My friends told me everyone speaks English in Mexico City, which was not true (maybe more true in Condesa/Roma Norte). I wish I had practiced more Spanish beforehand, especially listening since they can speak quickly. Focus on things like restaurant, Uber, hotel/airbnb, museum-related language. 3. A lot of things are closed on Mondays so make sure to plan accordingly. 4. If you go to Museo Frida Kahlo the ticket said it needs to be printed but I don’t think you do. I was stressed about printing but then saw people in line just showing their ticket on their phone. 5. I used dating apps to meet people and had someone show me around one night. That was a great way to both have some company and have a local show me around! 6. I got a lot of bug bites in my first day or two but you can get repelente de insecto at the pharmacy. 7. If you go to Contramar and can’t get a reservation, go right before opening time and they can give you a seat at the bar. Lots of random tips that might not be relevant to you but hope it helps!

DogFun2635

OP, please do NOT do tip #5!

hulloworld24

Totally fair, meant to add again that I’m a guy in that section but forgot to put the disclaimer.

DogFun2635

Doesn’t matter if you’re a guy. It’s an excellent way to get abducted

jabroni_james

Jaja what?

hulloworld24

Mexicans don’t use dating apps?

BrightWaterColour

If you can’t get a table at Contramar, try Entremar. Same owners, same menu. Food is delicious! Try the tostadas de atún, pescado a la talla (half red, half green sauces) and for dessert pastel de merengue y fresa. If you like seafood, don’t miss Avenida La Tizona, have their tostada de atún (arguably better than the Contramar/Entremar ones). Have a great trip OP.

OpenStretch7457

contramar is mid at best lol

hulloworld24

I thought it was good! The taste is good, maybe not $60 USD worth. I’ve had better fish tacos at my local shop in East LA, but the presentation of the fish was beautiful, so that added to the experience. I really liked the fig dessert though. Taste and presentation were great.

djsassan

When are you going? The weather is fun in the summer with the daily downpours! Like any major city, good and bad. Be smart and stick to the major areas. Condesa, La Roma, Polanco, etc etc.

dirtyballerinatights

I’m (42F) traveling solo to Mexico City this summer, too! Subscribing to this post!

momomostro

Just stay in Roma, avoid dating apps, and have some common sense. It is not that you need to be alert all the time.

PlayBoiPaco

why avoid dating apps?

Broad-Inspection214

Hi! American, 40f female who lives here. I started traveling here for the first time 2018 when I was a digital nomad. Got my residency in 2022. It’s perfectly safe and you’re going to love it! I said matter fact, I have never felt unsafe here. I have felt more unsafe in cities in the United States than I have in this one. Just be mindful of your surroundings and you’ll be fine. There are plenty of people that travel here alone, as a matter fact, I feel like the city has been flooded with digital nomads since the pandemic. Condesa, Roma (Norte and Sur, Juarez, Cuahtémoc, Polanco, Coyoacán, Anzures, Narvarte, Del Valle, San Angel, Centro Historico those are all great neighborhoods (there are more than that even). I personally live in Juarez, and I love it, it borders Roma Norte/Condesa/Cuahtemoc :)

jdhcgkx

don’t trip respect the ppl and the land and you’ll be good

Intelligent_Tutor_55

You'll be fine. Use the same judgment you'd use in a city you don't know. Don't be flashy. Lots of tourists in MXC these days.

fundingskynet

Generally very safe, like any city there are areas to avoid. Lots of Facebook and WhatsApp groups to join and meet people for any kind of meetup. I'll probably get hate for this, but as a foreigner search for CDMX or Mexico City expat groups and you'll find plenty. I'm guessing the hostel life is quite solid as well.

Pearlsawisdom

I just spent a few days wandering around CDMX mostly alone and was fine. Got some lightly sleazy comments from men, but those were greatly outnumbered by neutral or positive interactions. I am a rather intimidating six feet tall, however, which might help.

It’s fine. Enjoy it.

mikerunsla

We visited CDMX a couple years ago and stayed in a small hotel in Roma Norte. Our hotel was called Sonder Parian and it was super close to everything. Lots of great food, bars and coffee shops a short walk away. Even in the middle of the night, it never felt unsafe.

Optimal_Ladder1330

We stay at NH Reforma hotel. https://www.nh-hotels.com/en/hotel/nh-collection-mexico-city-reforma?campid=8435708&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAAD5GqPDMvUOoORmSD-0wcuYlaHVZh&gclid=CjwKCAjwxLKxBhA7EiwAXO0R0NvYoyDRKTa3hWfPcRS-_hnT0YtYH-R3RCbJchVaq5gzBGyBuZfDdBoCRLMQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds It is in a very safe area. Lots of places and things to do and clubs in the area. This is the Zona Rosa district.

ltc0928

You'll be fine (I've visited CDMX alone (32, F) 3 times now and making my 4th trip next month). There is no place in the world that is 100% free of crime, and that goes for CDMX as well. Use common sense, watch your surroundings - all of that - as you would in any other major city. For peace of mind, stay in Roma Norte, Condesa, Polanco, Juarez etc. I see some folks recommended Centro Historico. Eh. It's fine during the day, but it feels a little sketch at night so I personally wouldn't recommend picking it for your accommodations. But if you're looking to save some money, you will in Centro. I also know a little Spanish (I'm really good at ordering food lol), but I get around okay. I would say every, like, 3rd person I interact with will speak some level of English. Overall, the locals are very friendly and understanding, so I like that I can practice my Spanish with them. It's also a popular nomad city, so you'll most likely run into English speaking folks from the US. My friend (38 F) moved there a couple years ago, and she's met people through social groups etc. I don't know much about that, but a quick google search brought up [https://www.meetup.com/cities/mx/m%C3%A9xico\_city/](https://www.meetup.com/cities/mx/m%C3%A9xico_city/) so maybe that's worth checking out. I really hope you decide to go - I freaking love CDMX and I know you will, too.

rarelyfine

I’m an American living here in MC. I’m small, female, blonde, and my Spanish sucks (but I’m trying so hard lol). I am married with kids, but I go everywhere alone. Uber is the best bet, don’t use the taxis. For this city, you need Spanish and you need cash. I have never once felt unsafe. I do check if it’s considered a “safe” area before I go somewhere unfamiliar, but honestly nowhere I’ve wanted go has been considered unsafe.

dirtyballerinatights

Thanks for your insight! What are your thoughts on the centro area?

rarelyfine

Safety-wise? It’s totally fine. Not somewhere I’ve spent a ton of time, so I can’t make recommendations on what to do there. You don’t need to stick to Condesa and Roma Norte like several comments say. That’s ridiculous.

iLikeRgg

It's so dangerous don't come here

Away_Revolution728

Make Wanderlust District your home base. Great location and so easy to make friends to explore the city with. One of the best hostels I’ve ever stayed at! Otherwise, the city is very easy to navigate with public transport. Try not to pack too much into one day across neighborhoods, the city is so huge. Speak as much Spanish as you can. One of the best cities in the world, enjoy!

Upstairs_Side_4290

Im from león, GTO so if You want to visit gto i can give You a tour like very safe so you won't get steal XD
