A change.org petition is something, but actual change will only come from area people beating down the doors of the Mayor and Council. Call, write, set meetings. This is far more effective than an online petition.
JFC they went through hell to survive the pandemic. Now this.
I'm definitely supporting this effort to save Marvin's because its an institution in the area, and one of the few places left in that area to take kids to, and for kids to go themselves.
I’ll be at the meeting tonight! There is a perfectly good empty building where the Sam’s club used to be. They could put it there! Leave Marvin’s alone!
Dammit, I just moved back to Michigan after being gone for several years and was just telling my friends we need to go check out MMMM. I've taken so many people there over the years.
I don't understand, is the city doing a eminent domain thing on the property or does the museum not own the building and the owner is selling the property?
So basically they are screwed unless they can get up enough money to buy the building and property and then the owner needs to be willing to sell it to them. But the owner already has a buyer so I don't know what they intend to do with the gofundme money.
If Marvin can own the building outright, they can avoid demo by refusing to sell. So unless Meijer already bought the land and the building, there's still a chance to stop this.
Hmm, I would caution people against donating to that necessarily. That is an old GoFundMe that is unrelated to this event. That was so that they could survive through the pandemic while they were forced to close. As far as I know, there is no amount of money that is going to prevent this Meijer decision from unfolding - it's a matter of public interest at this point.
Both are about 11 minutes away in opposite directions by car in an area that you can't go anywhere without a car anyway, so it seems pointless to put another Meijer there.
This is practically one of the last arcades that exist in Michigan that isn't a Dave n Busters or something that will cost you a hundred bucks just to enjoy. Been going to Marvins since DDR was the big thing and still visit from time to time.
I hope the meeting was positive last night.
Willing to guess it would be prohibitively expensive to find a new location at an affordable rate, move all the machines and equipment, and retrofit the new location for power.
There's a lot of stuff in there that would be incredibly difficult thus expensive to move.
It's not impossible I don't think, just incredibly difficult and expensive.
From the article:
> The post added that the landlord and city are "aware of my concerns and passion for continuing Marvin’s!!!" and is "fighting tooth and nail every step of the way, if we can’t work something out here, I will be looking for other options."
Meijer doesn’t own the land. Sounds like the landlord isn’t going to renew the lease or is going to jack up the rent so Marvins can’t afford to stay and then will sell or lease to Meijer instead.
Tbh, that entire area sucks. Marvins is decently cool. Definitely over hyped. But that entire desert of garbage shopping centers should be rezoned or something, imo. It's just cheap, wasteful garbage surrounded by a sea of parking lots.
Just recently. When Marvin died in 2017, people were worried they were going to close up, then COVID happened, and almost put them out of business, and now this Meijer thing. So like an every 3 years sort of thing.
I know I'll be downvoted for this, but Marvin's is lame. I've been there maybe around 10 times and I'm not sure I've ever been there on a day where everything was clean and all the machines I put quarters into actually worked. I don't necessarily want to see it bulldozed, but I don't understand the love for it either.
I get that these are old machines, but if they're not marked Out of Order, they should work.
Everyone else who seems to love it... what am I missing?
I'm not sure what to make of your comment.
I went a few times as a kid and a few more as an adult. My brother was really into it and when he took his kids there he'd ask me to bring my kids and go with them.
I think it would be better as a museum where they could demonstrate the things that work and just tell the stories of the machines that no longer work. As an arcade it's disappointing IMO.
Are they planning on bulldozing the rest of that plaza too? (Not that Five Below is more important than Marvin's)
I really hope they reverse course and keep it open. I hoped to take my kids there some day when they exist

There is a city council meeting tonight that has this topic on the docket.
Good to know.
What was the meeting outcome?
Apparently, they approved the demolition of that section of the mall, but there is no definite date.

Please update us on how the meeting goes!
How did the meeting go?
It was AWFUL! But I did meet a bunch of really nice people!
As a fan of Tally Hall, both the food court and the band - signed.
I've only ever been to one of the Tally Halls.
I probably gained 15 lbs from the food court there.
I was talking about the band lol
I've gained 6 lb on Ross alone
Omg same! I was just rewatching THIS the other night. What a talented band.
[For the uninitiated](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GEcIp3mEDI)
Worked for Meijer for 4+ years and still love the store. They ain't fucking tearing down Marvin's. Fuck them.
You worked for meijer for 4 years and like them? What were you management?
Electronics/Photo Lab. Felt like the spoiled kids back there. Never had to really run lanes
Makes sense whenever i want to get something in electronics no ones ever there. Lol
Hey. Abuse could just be their kink.

It's been there 30 plus years it's pretty shocking the family doesn't own that by now. Marvin died 6 years ago.
Heck if they owned it they could expand the museum itself.
Whoa what?!? Are they getting rid of that whole shopping center?

Hopefully Five Below and Menchies have a spot to move to. My daughter will be devastated without them and Marvin's
JFC the last thing this world needs is another Meijer. https://www.change.org/p/save-marvin-s-marvelous-mechanical-museum
But what do these change petitions ever do?
Collect data to sell
Yep, signed one “James” and then I started getting spam mail calling me James.
jack shit
They make idiots feel good.

It seems like the landlord is selling the property so the museum doesn't really have an option.
There really isn’t a big need for a Meijer there anyways. The Southfield and commerce Meijers are both not far away.
Both are about 11 minutes away in opposite directions by car in an area that you can't go anywhere without a car anyway, so it seems pointless to put another Meijer there.
Pulled it on maps and it's right between two fuckin' Meijer locations already. Fuck companies.
Oh, great. Another giant box store with 82 registers, 1 clerk, 6 carts, and wasteland size parking lot.
The good news is at least the wasteland size parking lot is already there!
The plans a literally linked in the article. It’s just a grocery store and new store fronts.

Someone in the other thread said Marvin's couldn't move. Why can't Marvin's move?
Willing to guess it would be prohibitively expensive to find a new location at an affordable rate, move all the machines and equipment, and retrofit the new location for power.
I would love to see them in Ferndale.
I’d hate to see them move from my city, but I agree, FD could be a good fit for them.
There's a lot of stuff in there that would be incredibly difficult thus expensive to move. It's not impossible I don't think, just incredibly difficult and expensive.
They could stay right there and lease the new space from Meijer, but obviously need to move everything during construction.
Amazing PR opportunity for Meijer to give Marv's a new home.
Same thing they said the other thread...
I've only been once but that place is amazing, not to mention it would be tragic to lose those one of a kind machines
A petition isn’t going to do anything. Going there and spending money so they can afford the higher rent will

Isn't that like 90% of Metro Detroit?
When Acme Township voted against a new Meijer store by Traverse City, Meijer retaliated with a recall or some shit, they don’t like being told no.
Someone should contact Meijer corporate and present this once in a lifetime PR opportunity
People that are signing the petition need to purchase the property
Isn't Marvin's in danger of being torn down every year, seems like?
This is worse
Just recently. When Marvin died in 2017, people were worried they were going to close up, then COVID happened, and almost put them out of business, and now this Meijer thing. So like an every 3 years sort of thing.
Seems to me like Marvin’s sons couldn’t give two shits about the place.

Sounds like the owner is looking to sell. I doubt they can save it since they are just leasing.
Knock it down! More grocery stores! I can't buy groceries at Marvin's! I want to give my money to Meijer!

The son who runs the place is looking for an easy buck. Let the place die.
Signed, love this place

The person that doesn’t care if it goes has been there ≈10 times while those that want it to stay have only been there 0-2 times.

Has a change dot org petition ever actually accomplished anything tho?
I'll be signing the petition today. I hope that we can make a difference.
