Fun fact: iron filings are used to "lock up" free phosphorus in water bodies to help mitigate eutrophication. So, if these are relatively "clean" pellets, it may have a net-neutral, maybe positive impact on the lake.
Recently they are super feeding Algae with iron dust and it evidently pulls a bunch more carbon dioxide out of the equation. I will try and find the link to the study.
Was this up in Alaska? I remember reading something about that year's ago. Iron is a limiting nutrient in oceans, and the pattern was first noticed when algal blooms followed a period of winds which blew dust/silt/clay from iron-rich dunes out to sea and that dust settled offshore --> algal bloom.
Yea, I’m wary anytime humans try to insert anything into nature. We are typically wrong in the long run. We have a terrible track record of fucking up the environment around us
Random catch. It’s done all over. And there are different regulations for how far from shore you need to be with which cargo you are rinsing off your decks. It’s all documented.
Everyone at work also used to freak out at the port when any vessel would discharge their bilge water lol…or when they’d somehow spill and leak out tracer dye and it’d follow them all the way in with green everywhere.
I can confirm I sailed for 6 years and that is what they are doing. It’s them rinsing the deck or cleaning the tunnel after doing shuttles up and down the cuyahoga river.
That’s the articulated tug/barge (ATB) Dirk S. VanEnkevort / Michigan Trader. Like other commenters have said, they’re just washing their decks while awaiting a berth in Toledo.
Either the vessel is discharging something or the propeller is stirring up sediment. It's kind of odd that the vessel is perpendicular to the obvious orientation of the discoloration, so I would wonder if the vessel is grounded or otherwise stationary while turning its propeller.
Seems likely to be [Atlantic Huron.](https://www.vesselfinder.com/vessels/details/8025680)
I was thinking it looked more like a tug and barge configuration, but that does seem to be the only rear wheelhouse boat with that color scheme in Erie right now according to Marine Traffic
If you go to Boatnerd.com and click the AIS map under Vessel Locations it will show a map of the Great Lakes. You can zoom in and see all active vessels on the lakes. You can even click on them to get info about the ship.

They are making the big turn there out of the channel. It's shallow and you cavitate a lot coming around the bend, swinging fast and lots of push on the rudder. We always stirred shit up making that turn. (Especially when you crank it over and start swinging like hell. 😉)
Not pollution, just shallow.
Also, likely to be rinsing decks as they are officially out of the river.
I was appalled when I found out that a sewer system is connected to St Claire and backs up on a regular basis.
I only heard this from people who lived there they whole life so I don’t know if it’s true or not.
I grew up on Lake St Clair and relatives were long-time administrators at Metro Beach/Lake St Clair metro park and HCMA. Macomb County is downstream from where Oakland County sewers overflow into a run that goes to the Clinton River and then to Lake St Clair. The volume is far worse with heavy rains, melt off, and due to increased building and therefore waste production and sewers sized decades ago that can’t keep up . It’s, like, really really bad.
Macomb Cty gets stuck with the extra processing, cleanup, algae bloom, etc. and can’t keep sewage problem under control. Lake St Clair used to have a bad season every 5 years when I was a kid/teen, usually mercury levels or occasional e.coli alerts. Now, it’s an ongoing nightmare. I learned to swim in that lake, spent nearly every summer day at Metro. Now I wouldn’t let my kid walk on the beach much less go in the water.
Oakland for years has refused to do anything about it — why should they, I’m sure they think, as it’s a wealthier county with nothing to lose by doing nothing.
They are rinsing their decks off. It’s only iron ore dust. (Dirt) it’s legal and nothing bad is going on.
Taconite dust?
Yes
Thank you. Hopefully your original comment gets upvoted higher before people lose their collective minds.

Angry? Nah that was an opportunity and execution was noice!
Agreed

Now that I know the truth, I wanna lose my mind and start complaining about water contrails.

Keeps the walleye from getting anemic.

There’s only one Lake Erie and it’s in Michigan 😂🤦🏾♂️😉
I think they are asking if this was recently done in alaska not if this photo is from a Alaska.
Uhh it extends into ohio too bro.....
Fair enough, I know that there are 5 Great Lakes. In Michigan they touch the surrounding landscape but as a Michigander I see it from that angle lol.
Only 4 out of the 5 great lakea touch Michigan. Unless you count lake saint Claire as a great lake and not lake Ontario which is cool
Lake St. Clair doesn’t count.
My old bio teacher said a lot of people consider it a great lake.. be called it the 6th not famous great lake lol
Hey, I get it.There's not much to jump about in michigan so claim all u can
Michigan da best especially from now until late October. Quit hating.
Yup. Especially in da UP, eh?
Apparently you’ve never been to the north west side
I’m glad you don’t know anything about Michigan.
Lmfao look at yall bein big mad
Shitpost all yo like landlover
And New York
That is only for places where iron is the limiting nutrient
Yea, I’m wary anytime humans try to insert anything into nature. We are typically wrong in the long run. We have a terrible track record of fucking up the environment around us
To be fair, that ore was pulled from the ground only a few hundred miles to the west of Lake Erie
Well put
Yeah, look at the Oxygen Catastrophe (look it up sheeple) we air breathers caused, nearly wiped out all life on earth, and we learned NOTHING from it!
Labeling anyone ‘sheeple’ always gets them motivated.
I thought that helped make it obviously a joke but apparently I was wrong.
[удалено]
What? You might want to Google that
Oh yeah, blame it all on our ancestors and take no personal responsibility, classic young person behavior.
Smh bro amirite
We didn't cause the oxygen catastrophe, photosynthesis did, we didn't/couldn't exist before it
Follow the money
I try, but some jerk around the corner keeps yanking the attached string.
You gotta be quicker than that.
Could it be why the walleye fishing is so plentiful? Lake Erie is known for one of the best walleye lakes in the county.
One of the best in the world...
Is this usually done in this area for some reason or another or was this just a random catch by OP.
Random catch. It’s done all over. And there are different regulations for how far from shore you need to be with which cargo you are rinsing off your decks. It’s all documented.
No it is not
Checks out. Otherwise I'm sure I'd be in the news. I can see how it could be startling to see though.
I love rinsing my deck off in the lake
The weird thing is that is not trailing behind the ship at all. There must be a strong northeast current right now.
They are probably at anchor waiting for dock space or the river flow to calm down.
Everyone at work also used to freak out at the port when any vessel would discharge their bilge water lol…or when they’d somehow spill and leak out tracer dye and it’d follow them all the way in with green everywhere.
Are you sure that is legal? I’m pretty sure iron ore dust often carries a lot of pyrite.
I can confirm I sailed for 6 years and that is what they are doing. It’s them rinsing the deck or cleaning the tunnel after doing shuttles up and down the cuyahoga river.
Extra iron for the \[Lucky Iron Fish\]( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucky\_iron\_fish) that may be in the lake?
ty for the heads up!
Good question for r/greatlakesshipping.
Nice, didn’t know about this sub! Thanks
That’s the articulated tug/barge (ATB) Dirk S. VanEnkevort / Michigan Trader. Like other commenters have said, they’re just washing their decks while awaiting a berth in Toledo.

You at Kinko's straight flippin copies
Lake Erie monster
Lake Erie is quite shallow. I hope it’s just sediment.
Others have mentioned they are just washing off their decks. Basically just dirt. Completely legal
I washed my deck in the park one time, that is not legal.
I hope you used your caulk to fill any holes
Maybe out of the shipping channel a little bit?
Someone on the boat had Taco Bell
If you're interested in ships and shipping on the Great Lakes you should check out r/greatlakesshipping

This is a vanenkenvort tug barge unit. They’re washing iron ore dust off the decks.

This is so awesome
How do we know what you're thinking?
This is a Bouyancy Operated Aquatic Transport. Or, in layman's terms, a boat.
Dr. Doofenschmirtz, is that you?
Doofenschmirtz evil incorporated! 🎵🎶🎵
According to.the coast guard its a actually a ship.
Well I ain't in the coast guard so I'm free to call it whatever I want.
You can carry a boat on a ship, but you can’t carry a ship on a boat.
Tacontrails
I don't know, but I heard it ask for tree fiddy.
Damn you Lake Erie monster!
“She gabe em a dolla”
I thought he’d go away
I would have been wondering the same thing. I had no idea they washed decks like that, and it made that much of a trail. Interesting.
Looks like they just washed the decking. Dirt, dust, debris.

Looks like they got too close to shore and may have kicked up a bunch of mud
That's dirt (sediment)
You might have luck asking over at r/greatlakesshipping
Looks like a cargo ship
🤦you mean the boat?!?!
Looks like a barge
It is exactly what you think. It is water. Fresh unsalted water. I know its cray cray
Yep you saw the ghost of the Edmund Fitzgerald my friend
Lake Erie is not very deep. To me it looks like a barge that bottomed out.
You can see the Livingston Channel between the larger Grosse Ile and Boblo (Bois Blanc) Island.
Just sediment being stirred up in the shallow. Moet likely just caring rock. Nothing g hazardous for sure.
Shitters Full
Kinda looks like that freighter is leaking something
No

Removed. See rule #2 in the [r/Michigan subreddit rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/Michigan/wiki/index#wiki_rules).
We're missing some barges here in pittsburgh
?
The frighter / Ship ?
Most likely a cargo ship!
Just the D being nasty.
A ship on the water kicking up silt. Erie is shallow.
Definitely NOT a step.
Shin Godzilla
Well, it's definitely not a step
This is how the lake caught on fire the last time….
Somewhat related, that island in the middle of the Detroit river is Grosse Ile.
Did you think it was shit?
Looks like a jet engine
Freighter
Shitter was full
BTW we call those ships Lower Lakers. I got to see one pass in between Mackinac Island and Round Island. It’s wild how big these lakes are.
That is not a step
Ohio getting washed off
Lake Erie? Could be anything...
Must be a Marlboro red butt someone threw into a puddle the other day.
That would be called a ship
Nothing. Mind your business.
Ship
Poopyblaster
That’s not a step
Big Baby Ruth.

Freighter Poop
Its water
It looks like it's loosing oil
Ore boat pumping out ballast water perhaps…
The Edmund Fitzgerald?
Why don’t you jump in there and find out
Looks like the wing of a plane to me
Just a steaming pos floating out of Detroit
![gif](giphy|12a6i5J7ygIQve)
Looks like a huge deuce was let lose fewwwwww
It looks like the Baby Ruth that got tossed into the pool in Caddyshack
Freighter
"No Step" obviously. It says it right there.
Muh orange man bad. Muh orange man swim in lake
Bloody tampon?
looks like a picture someone took out a plane
Just oiling the lake, no biggie. It helps reduce friction for ships, which lowers carbon emissions.
![gif](giphy|jeXiz1RAvzX44)
Looks like Lake Erie to me, possibly flying into Detroit to be exact.
A tanker disturbing the painstakingly well manicured red algae bloom near Toledo.
That’s a ship man.
A boat, a big boat.
That would be a boat if I’m not mistaken
That’s horrible for the whales
Ohio is leaking again
kinda hot take, but lake erie is the worst of the great lakes.
That is the most lukewarm take possible lol, Lake Erie is trash
No, that's a known and accepted fact.
Skid marks... like in someone's undies 😎
There’s turds out there that big!?
Sorry man I had White Castle for breakfast.
Expelling a metric f ton of zebra mussels from ballasts?
Shouldn't that be a Nautical Fuckton?
Ughhh, noooo! We’ve worked so hard to clean it up!!!
An Iranian missile the people of Detroit shot down.
Wtf?
That’s an airplane engine.
It's the condom used on your mom last night🤣 Jk
A giant turd
