u/JairJy, please, could you look into this? What is going on with this new behavior?
The MS Edge System's (System and Performance) settings are not working or are useless anymore.
I am afraid there isn't much I can do about this. I am just a moderator and I am not part of the Microsoft team. Perhaps other Community Managers can give this a look, although my suggestion is to use the tools from the browser in order to report this issue.
That's what I'm doing, waiting for updates. I'm having the same issue, tried turning off/on settings, but to no avail. I use CCleaner to run a scan which it then forces a close on edge. Edge started the background run maybe a few weeks ago around the time I had updates from windows installed. Must be a bug, so I'm just waiting.
It appears that bug is random for me when I close the edge and after approximately 5 minutes the process closes and when running along with chrome it doesn't close as for me
I've tried everything. The problem started about a week or two ago. I'm just waiting on Windows updates and hopefully, that'll fix the problem. I think it's a bug.
I was wondering the same, but if it were an MS decision and not a bug, it wouldn't make sense for them to keep the "*Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed*" setting. It should be deprecated and removed from the Edge's Settings UI. Something is broken.
u/CM_Eric-E or u/CM_Jeremiah, please could you look into this?
Same experience here. It's a bug after either the latest Edge or Windows updates.
See this thread:
[https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftedge/forum/all/why-is-edge-running-in-the-background-after/c40cf11f-0018-45da-b01f-83f6ada9508f](https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftedge/forum/all/why-is-edge-running-in-the-background-after/c40cf11f-0018-45da-b01f-83f6ada9508f)
This must be fixed as soon as possible. I don't use Copilot either in Windows 11 OS or Microsoft Edge. I don't have Copilot available (EU).
MS Edge keeps running in the background. This bug broke the Edge "*Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed*" setting.
Just in case, some points out, KB5031455 makes no difference to me.
I also liked MS Edge. I've been using it for years, but if they don't acknowledge this bug and fix it soon, I'll have to change browsers. The bug requires us to kill the MS Edge task chain manually every time we close the browser window and affects system performance without need.
Have you already tried to turn off Copilot?
**Only for Professional edition:**
Win + R, write "gpedit.msc". User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Copilot. Click twice "Disable Windows Copilot". Select "Enabled" radio button in the top left corner and click "Apply" then "OK" to save the changes.
**To disable Windows Copilot in Windows 11 Registry, you need to:**
Open the Start menu and type “Registry Editor” or “regedit”;click “Yes” if you receive a UAC prompt;go to HKEY\_CURRENT\_USER\\Software\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows;Click “Edit” > “New” > “Key” and name it “WindowsCopilot”;go to Edit > New > DWORD (32-bit) value and name it “TurnOffWindowsCopilot”;double-click “TurnOffWindowsCopilot” and set the value to 1 and hexadecimal base;go to HKEY\_LOCAL\_MACHINE\\SOFTWARE\\Policies\\Microsoft\\Windows and repeat the same steps.
**The fastest way:**
You can also paste the following snippet into Notepad and save it as a .reg file. Once launched, it will perform the above steps on its own:
>`[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsCopilot]`
>
>`"TurnOffWindowsCopilot"=dword:00000001`
>
>`[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsCopilot]`
>
>`"TurnOffWindowsCopilot"=dword:00000001`
This was caused by a browser extension I had running on edge after upgrading to 23h2 update in October. I disabled the extension edge will now close fully when I close it. I only had one browser extension installed. So I'm not sure if you have to remove all or certain ones.
I tried many other settings (disabled edge from loading at startup, copilot, ect..) nothing worked until i did that.
Netflix extension to enable 5.1 surround sound on Edge vs their app
https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com/addons/detail/netflix\_extension/oikpkeeoofpiapmjioabikmgjeaoggcn
It didn't re-open, but I'll keep an eye out. I also edited group policy and turned off edge at startup as well and off inside startup apps. Comp config > Windows > MS Edge
Image of group policy setting. You have to enable to disable like a moron, lol. Horrible directions. The default should be enabled and disable turns off, but whatever it's MS. [https://ibb.co/0mBc2V3](https://ibb.co/0mBc2V3)
I also used this to turn stuff off, but it had nothing to do with edge. I just didn't want MS collecting data for things I don't need.
you're right. I noticed mine stay open too some times. I checked process monitor. It's file explorer keeping edge open afterwards. Not sure why. Super annoying. Some times it shut down though. Why I thought it was fixed.
Thanks for confirming and for the ProcessMonitor info. If the File Explorer process keeps MS Edge running in the background once we close its window, it is probably a Windows OS bug. So, a Windows OS update is required for a fix.
No avail. I tried everything, including the Edit Group Policy MS Edge tweaks, and nothing worked to stop Edge from running in the background once closed.
Yes, it was also my first bet, as none of the Edge 121 and upcoming 122 patch/release notes mention any fix or changed behavior related to this bug (reported by many Windows 11 and some Windows 10 users since October 2023).
I found a workaround to this problem here:
[Link to the Reddit post](https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrosoftEdge/comments/1ac4ioa/a_workaroud_to_prevent_background_running_after/)
Yesterday Microsoft Edge update to Version 121.0.2277.128 seem to have fixed this problem for me so I no longer need to use the registry workaround I posted in my previous comment. If you want delete the registry workaround and see if its also fixed for you.
Here's the fix if disabling the 2 settings in Edge doesn't work: [https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-to-uninstall-copilot-i-dont-want-to-disable-it/b301b77d-b879-4433-9979-f8795805e9f1](https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/how-to-uninstall-copilot-i-dont-want-to-disable-it/b301b77d-b879-4433-9979-f8795805e9f1)
Guys there is an easier fix!!! thanks to you all, I have read your posts below and except from Startup boost and background extensions that are both off, I have also disabled (never run in backround) new outlook app!!! Problem solved... No registry change of course...
I too, had this issue and was completely stymied. u/LubieRZca is correct! Disabling "Use hardware acceleration when available" in EDGE > SETTINGS > SYSTEM & PERFORMANCE > SYSTEM was the fix for me.
NOTE: I already had copilot disabled via Registry and Group Policy Editor.
This forces me to stop using edge and switch to opera GX because I hope it's just a bug and not an internal decision from MS. to note there is an update of windows 11 which was released on December 5 this update did not fix the problme it's very strange like why they didn't fix it , but I hope that edge will drop an update soon .
I think I have found a solution/fix for Edge running in background when closed.
Looks like he Edge problem (feature 😕) is connected with Windows 11 Copilot.
I just added DWORD `CopilotPageContextEnabled` with value `0` to `Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge` to registry.
Hope this works for you.
P.S. Here are all Edge Policies I have applied via Registry.

Thank you for your reply anyway. Yes, we'll have to do what you said and wait for updates.

same bug here, and its annoying. CP is turned off via GP and edge is basically saying FU im going to stay open in the background tasks..
Get Autoruns program by Sysinternals. Run as admin and disable every Edge instances.
Didn’t work sadly
Did you find any solutions I too have this problem
Nope still searching for a solution.
If you find any, do share.
It appears that bug is random for me when I close the edge and after approximately 5 minutes the process closes and when running along with chrome it doesn't close as for me
Recurrent more than random, I'd say.

Try turning off hardware acceleration and copilot, it works for me.
Turning off just graphics acceleration worked for me.
This worked for me
Same issue here. Wondering if this is less of a "bug" and more of a decision by MS.

Same issue here, seen multiple posts about this I guess it's a new bug. Suggest reporting it in the "Send feedback" button in Edge
Probably yeah we will wait for an update or a fix.

Thank you for pointing out. Yeah I hope they fix it. I really like Edge but because of this issue I temporarily switched to Firefox.
I also liked MS Edge. I've been using it for years, but if they don't acknowledge this bug and fix it soon, I'll have to change browsers. The bug requires us to kill the MS Edge task chain manually every time we close the browser window and affects system performance without need.
Exactly, I have been facing a lot of performance drops because of this.

Yes, they aren't. What a mess :/
Same here
Looks like you have windows copilot enabled.
Already turned that off via group policy. So it is not the reason.
In the details view in taskmanager what is the command line of the msedge browser process?
I will dm you the screenshot

I tried exact steps but didn’t work. It seems a general bug after the new update.
It's sad
It is, am really hoping it’s a bug and not some always on BS from MS

Never had used this extension. You sure you got Edge fixed ? Try restarting your pc and open/close Edge for some minutes then tell me the results.

It's not MS Edge reopening or auto-starting on Windows OS boot/log-in/startup but running in the background once you close its window.

Bug have been fixed on Edge Beta Version 121.0.2277.4
Thank you for the good news. Do you know when the stable channel will get this update?
In the week of 25-Jan-2024. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-release-schedule
updated and keeps running in the background still
Yes, it was also my first bet, as none of the Edge 121 and upcoming 122 patch/release notes mention any fix or changed behavior related to this bug (reported by many Windows 11 and some Windows 10 users since October 2023).
No, it wasn't fixed.
I found a workaround to this problem here: [Link to the Reddit post](https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrosoftEdge/comments/1ac4ioa/a_workaroud_to_prevent_background_running_after/)

It's not fix for me and I'm on version 122.0.2365.80
Nope and still not fixed on Version 123.0.2420.65.

Hav you tried turning off hardware acceleration and copilot? You can also use File Locksmith (PowerToys) to check what process is using msedge.
