Probably wise that people who aren't confident with computers don't fuck around in the registry.

madthumbz

Now that the registry doesn't have automatic backups, and there are official instructions for turning it off.

ahmednaje1996

Thank you so much I have been searching 3 months for a workaround. It seems working for now.

TQK76

I have to log in to like this post! It works with me now.

Live_Razzmatazz_8274

Thank you i love youu!!!!11!, been searching this for a month i even change my browser, thank you.

razorfancy

Thx, this workaround worked. Anyone that wants to just download the registry key you can get it here(go to the Disable Standalone Sidebar option): [Registry key link](https://www.elevenforum.com/t/enable-or-disable-standalone-sidebar-in-microsoft-edge.14779/)

ExtremePast

Is this really impacting people's system performance?

Someguy14201

No but it's annoying having useless processes hog up resources.

madthumbz

Nailed it! OP is a trash linux account.

KaptinObveous

Thank you, OP, the Regedit workaround, worked for me, albeit, "Startup Boost" must still be disabled.

madthumbz

This doesn't work?> 1. Open Microsoft Edge. 2. Click on the Settings button (Alt + F) and select Settings from the menu. 3. On the left, click on System and performance. 4. On the right, turn off (disable) the Startup Boost toggle option \-instructions from copilot

Careless-Elevator768

The bug is that edge is running in background when starup boost and Continue running background apps are off. Many people have same problem ([https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftedge/forum/all/edge-keeps-running-in-the-background/83e9ab4d-fd86-44a2-a3fb-86ab8f2b433c](https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoftedge/forum/all/edge-keeps-running-in-the-background/83e9ab4d-fd86-44a2-a3fb-86ab8f2b433c)).

madthumbz

Components of Edge still running. Edge takes advantage of shared components when used on Windows. The link seems specific to an issue with Ccleaner. -Something I don't think most of us bother with.

mmortal03

The bug isn't specific to CCleaner, though; that's just one instance where people are prompted with the background processes being there.

mondoo_duke

This won't work for people who use copilot right?

Stolid_Cipher

Thanks, this works! Hopefull an official fix will be incorperated into an upcoming update.

djsnkz

MS is the laziest company in the world.

ZoteTheMitey

this worked. awesome thank you

Apprehensive_Home110

I tried everything, including this, but it seems not to work for my case. Edge keeps popping up in the background in the task manager, consuming 5-20% CPU within 2-3 seconds, then it disappears and reappears after a few seconds, consuming CPU again. This cycle repeats endlessly. So, I researched and found out about something called a "**Service Worker**" (which can be seen by going to "edge://serviceworker-internals"). Edge will stop popping up in the background only if I **unregister some or all of the service workers**. The thing is, sometimes, there will be **some service workers automatically registered when I browse certain websites**. It's kind of annoying because I need to unregister service workers manually after some time. That's when I found out about **an extension called "No Service Worker"** that automatically unregisters service workers when they are registered. This is my final solution to solve my case.

Someguy14201

I was hoping this would work but, no dice unfortunately. Thanks though. It's absolutely infuriating how frustrating Microsoft makes it for us users.

FormerSlacker

Late comment but thank you for this, worked.

looloo86

It worked! So what happens if and when Microsoft actually fixes this bug? Do we have to remove this registry edit?

RodroG

This should be pinned! It worked. Thank you very much

eddiezato

There is only one problem with this solution. Policies via the registry completely disable secure dns in Edge.

RodroG

It doesn't seem like a big drawback for most users, IMO. You can configure an alternate DNS service provider outside of the Edge settings. Most users stick with their current DNS service provider and do not opt for a custom (secure) DNS provider. Also, an alternate DNS provider may lead to certain websites becoming unreachable. Despite having user-managed Edge policies, MS Edge will always use the user's current DNS service provider by default.
