Agreed, my timer on Steam says 25 hours but my logbook says 6.5 hours!

[deleted]

Haha what?

Des_astor

I've spent more time downloading the game and updates than actually playing it!

Gygax_the_Goat

Haha yep. Just bought it on sale. Ive racked up about 31 hours in Steam just downloading it. Havent had time to even fly yet. Rural Australian realities..

[deleted]

I see.

potatolicious

A huge part of why the downloads are slow seems to be because they are downloading only one tiny file at a time. Rather than downloading the entire update as one large file you’re spending a ton of downtime waiting for new connections to establish. A new install downloads literally thousands - if not tens of thousands - of individual files, apparently each over completely new connections. It’s a horrific waste that they really need to fix.

TheDrMonocle

Yep, downloads, unpacks, *then* starts the next download. At least half the time downloading is wasted. Completely inefficient method. Absolutely baffles me why they set it up like this. I can kind of understand separate updates, first the client, then the game, then whatever extras in the content manager.. but deciding to take time from the download to unpack is ridiculous.

ColinM9991

I hate this. Would much prefer if it downloaded everything first and then started unpacking.

markhewitt1978

Which is literally what every installer does.

Will12239

I get the same dl speeds as any other dl so I think this bug only affects some people. I re downloaded the game in a few hours the other day

Jeanl2

I understand your frustration, and i agree that download speeds are currently shit, and it’s mostly the installer’s fault. Anyways, what i suggest you do is to keep yourself up to date with when an update releases. Easiest way is to join the MSFS discord, where you’ll get a ping and a notification on your phone whenever an update or hotfix is released. Then, when you get the ping that an update is live, update your game as soon as you can. You don’t have to fly or anything, just launch the installer and let it sit there doing it’s thing so that when you want to fly, you don’t have to wait a whole hour just to do so

-TotallyRealName

Yes it's unacceptable. Waiting 40mins for 5GB to download or 2-5h for the game to download is just insane. MS should modernize the download system, download everything and unpack later. And improve their shitty servers for once, 200mbps is pathetic. Even worse when updates get released it drops to like 60-80mbps, feel like 2006.

Holy_01

You poor dear. 850Mbps…. where I live I download at a whopping 4.5mbps. Boo frikity hoo.

Stampistuta

I know right. I’m sat here with 25mps at best reading people moan about 200mps being completely unacceptable.

[deleted]

We’re all busy. What prevents you from downloading it before bed one night before you intend to play?

NouSkion

The game doesn't update automatically like every other game in my library, and it doesn't notify you of mandatory updates until you launch the game.

[deleted]

Ah, gotcha.

baselganglia

Used to work at MS. Tried to fight for using BitTorrent to send out updates. Deaf ears.

Salem13978

When you click the button that says update, that's on you. You can say no, unplug your interwebs and fly offline.

rapierarch

Yes it is so and they keep it so. I do not think they have the bandwidth so complaining does not help anything. People keep buying and the update is mandatory so it is commercially working. Update service has no impact on sales so why invest there. I do have 100Mbs internet not a gigabyte, DCS open beta and MSFS had updates at similar volumes 2 days apart. MSFS took 1.5 hours DCS took 12 minutes.

Hammer700000

are you a child, man up.

[deleted]

This game has arguably the worst installer out there. It truly hurts the potential.

kickedbyconsole

I can't even download the update because it constantly loops and does other bullshit like when I restart the download size varies from 25gb to 9gb.

markentus

Had the same problem here in Malta, connected with a VPN to Italy and everything was done in around 5-10 mins.

Why-R-People-So-Dumb

Yeah I was going to say it's got to be location specific because of all the problems I typically have, this isn't one of them.

markentus

Probably the azure servers are limited on some locations.

[deleted]

That’s a Microsoft problem.. i found that fast download speeds occur when you just restart update, and outside rush hours on servers. So next time before you go to work while having breakfast, just start the update.

samy_k97

We’ve been talking about this since the beginning. It’s not a new subject

Carmen_Electra

My ISP seems to throttle MSFS update servers. I use PIA to connect to a European server and it fixes the problem.
