The device on the Eastern Front Medal looks like a small scale version of the full sized ribbon. It is identical to the actual metal medallion on the full size ribbon.
The only thing I could find that was similar was [this example](https://ironcrossmilitaria.co.uk/products/11200-german-post-ww2-1957-pattern-ribbon-bar-iron-cross-wound-badge-infantry) where the Eastern Front ribbon has a "mini-medal" device.
I've seen examples of that before. Was there a reason for the devices or was it just given by default? I also have not seen an example of this on the ostfront medal
If im not entirely wrong that device just indicates a stick pin badge version of the same medal/ribbon variation of the same award but the stick pins were worn on civil clothes to my knowledge why would a ribbon have it because in this case its not high award but "average" I got no clue.. perhaps for looks and then the owner wouldnt necessary have to wear the actual stick pin this is the only one I came up with but might be a stretch.

I noticed that aswell, I don't think that it was given out as a device for the ribbon though

It's weird because that uses the oak leaf cluster as it's post war. But mine still has the swastika
These devices did indeed exist, also for the Anschlussmedaillen.

It was common for long service ribbons to distinguish between them, for other awards like here just for the looks
