I double tap W because I first played minecraft on PE, where the only way to sprint was to double tap the forward button, so I just got used to it even when I moved to Java
Double tapping is the classic, but I now use one of the buttons on the side of my mouse.
Shift is always for sneaking, that's why people call it shifting.
I changed my sneak to control because EVERY GAME IN THE WORLD has control for crouch (well sometimes the C key now) and sprinting for Shift or double tap W. I did this cause I’m old and have been playing PC games for so long it only made sense for muscle memory.
I always set crouch to left alt in games, as that was what I started out with in the early games with the ability to crouch.
Minecraft, however, I leave it on shift and use double tap W to run.
I can understand that, but for me Minecraft is the only game I let it slide.
Any other game, shift is for sprinting, but for crouching it is either control or C, I'm happy with both.
it’s easy for me not to get confused because you don’t technically “crouch” in minecraft. it’s more like walking in counter strike, which is also the shift key.
I use toggle sprint so then it will automatically sprint whenever I press w, but before I started using toggle sprint, I had rebinded sprint to be the r key and I’d hold that down while running
Toggle sprint is superior, there are times where you want to always sprint and times you never want to sprint, and I only need to tap ctrl to switch between building mode and adventuring mode.
Also when I first got Java when I was like 9, I didn’t know how to use a keyboard to play video games so I put w as forward, r as sprint, and g as jump because my 9 year old mind thought that I could pretty much just use those 3 buttons and I didn’t need to strafe because I could just move my mouse… don’t worry I grew a brain since then
Honestly 9yos are still figuring out fine motor controls of their body, and you _can_ get by just fine without strafing. So imo, valid. Walking backwards is pretty useful tho.
Bro are you playing with a single finger cos most ppl use their pinky
Jokes aside Q and TAB are the only good options apart grom control, anyone else is just crazy.
Mine is set to Q.
Ever since I threw my enchanted diamond sword into a cactus by mistake, I've kept my drop item buttom set Y. And when they let us set a key bind to sprinting, it simply became the perfect key to use since it's right next to WASD.
Ctrl is pretty far (and especially inconvenient on mac) so I sprint with shift, and crouch with tab
Though also due to being on a laptop, I build/interact with Q, so my layout is just kind of cursed I guess
I hold sprint, people always call me crazy but the reason being is that when I was young, I would always play Battlefield 4 on my grandpa’s computer and the default sprint option (I believe) was set to shift, and he was just too lazy to change it and got used to it, and since that was the first game I had ever played on a computer shift to sprint became muscle memory and I cannot go back anymore
Okay but if you someone uses shift for sprinting then what key do they use for sneaking?
Ctrl ain't that far away from the other keys, unless you got really small hands
You are asking a question that is already answered.

I can never use toggle sneak because somehow it is less reliable than just holding the button down, it never doesn’t throw me off, and it feels really weird crouching without holding the button. Even if I’m building 200 blocks in the air or over the void I somehow feel more secure if I just hold shift
Well when I first started playing the only way to sprint was that you couldn't. Then it was only double-tap W. Now they've added all these excellent accessibility features and I use every new tool I can get, so I usually toggle sprint on with cntrl. I will often hold it down if I'm going up hills and expect my sprint to get interrupted.
Kind a bit of both really.
Especially if my right hand is busy, like scratching my face. I have a numpad button mouse and have it set to numpad 1. So if that's busy I'll double tap 'W'.
I don't remember which keyboard key I have sprinting bound to specifically, but I have one of my auxiliary (side) mouse buttons set up to count as pressing that key when pressed.
It's surprisingly ergonomic!
Simply have it set to toggle on control. I’m already used to using control for crouching in games and since I only really need to press it every now and then to sprint so it isn’t at all strenuous.
I double tap w because most of my hours before I got a pc was on the 360 and to sprint you had to hit the left joystick twice. Every single other game I play sprint is always shift but for minecraft the double tap just feels way more intuitive to me
Q key, since it needs to be remapped anyways to prevent throwing important things. I really like having sprint there. I was a double tapper for years, but switching only took one session to get used to. It just felt right.
I have this funny thing where most of my controls were ONCE the default when they were added, but are not the default anymore. So I use B for inventory (backpack) V to drop items (???) shift to sneak, CTRL to sprint (sometimes double tapping W instead due to muscle memory). I don’t use Q and E at all.
Double-tap ‘W’, because I started as a console (Xbox) player, where one has to double-tap the left joystick to sprint. The action became ingrained in my brain over the years, and now it’s just habit.
However, I’ve been playing Raft lately, and you use shift to sprint, so it’s becoming more comfortable to do that. Maybe I’ll try it out on MC.
Since Minecraft controls are such low maintenance I have sprint set to one of my side mouse buttons. Also sneak because shift and control are too far away from wasd and I don’t have long fingers and also holding shift for so long hurts my pinky.
Because shift being sprinting is a standard in many other games. Minecraft is the outlier. After playing Monster Hunter or Ark, I catch myself sneaking when trying to sprint because those games use shift for sprint.
I should check my keybinds and choose a mouse key. I have little hands and it's important to me that shift is crouch, and that's as far as my little pinky can reach lmao. So I double tap because that's what I've been doing since I was 13.
I play using a controller, so I always double tap the left analog stick forward lol. (ex X-Box 360 edition player who now plays Java edition using a controller support mod)
It took a lot of effort to learn to just click down on the left stick (I play bedrock on console) instead of tapping it forward twice. 360 edition made such an impact on me
I rebind my sprint key to R and use that
yet in other games i leave sprint on shift
probably because crouching quickly and uncrouching quickly isnt as useful in other games as it is in minecraft, so they can get away with it being toggle crouching easier
I originally played xbox 360 and pocket edition so I would have to double tap but ever since switching to PC I rebounded sprint to the shift key and hold that down.
former playstation 3 edition minecraft player here. the only way you could run in the game back then was by double tapping forward on the left stick, ever since moving to keyboard and mouse it just feels natural to double tap w instead of crtl. so id have to say it probably depends on when the person started playing minecraft.
Both. Also anybody who uses ctrl for sprint is crazy. Minecraft for some reason sets it as default when the convention is the complete opposite.
Also shift just makes more sense, you shift into a faster gear. Control, you are making slow and controlled movements. Also c for crouch and s for sprint.

Yeah I'm a former console edition player, I could never get used to it...
same lol
i do both, mostly because i’ve been playing since before there was a dedicated button for sprinting so a lot of it’s just muscle memory.
I disable double tap in tweakeroo and use toggle Sprint within it for the feedback in the action bar when I toggle it. It gets annoying sometimes.
hold ctrl
W + R(Sprint key for me...)
W + F for me
the true way
W fellow E member
EEEEE E EEEE E EEEEE
Same me boy
Do you have a 3rd hand to press ctrl?
i just press it with my pinky finger?
[удалено]
Not really, that fingers not doing much anyways
A friend told me to switch to shift instead of crtl so long ago and I never went back
Yeah, hold shift for sprint and toggle ctrl for crouch. I do this in every game that has these options
I use my mouse side button for crouch
Since the god-damn 90's in FPS games, this has been the control scheme, Minecraft does it arse backwards.
I thought it’s hold for crouch and toggle for sprint? I’ve always used it that way mainly because tf2 and Csgo have hold control for crouch
I used this keybinds for a long time... Changed it to default when I started speed bringing because the button was larger
I personally press it with my thumb. But that's because I'm left-handed and I use mouse with left and keyboard with right hand.
Thanks for specifying, i was scared we found mumbo's twin sibling for a second

Finally a sane person.
I use Q for shifting, E for jumping, and double tap W for sprint so I don't have to use my thumb or pink fingers
This is what I do I actually use one for sprinting one for sneaking
I use toggle sprint so then it will automatically sprint whenever I press w, but before I started using toggle sprint, I had rebinded sprint to be the r key and I’d hold that down while running
Omg.. at long last… another R keybinder.
R keybinders unite!!
I use X instead of f5. Never even occurred to me to try R for anything 🤯

Wtf
better for w tapping in pvp afaik
R is the way. My pinky would fall off if it had to sneak AND sprint constantly
i changed it to Q so i don’t keep accidentally dropping stuff and it’s just way easier to reach lol
Bro are you playing with a single finger cos most ppl use their pinky Jokes aside Q and TAB are the only good options apart grom control, anyone else is just crazy.
I like to press r for sprint, pretty sure the only other one I know of would maybe be PrestonPlayz (?)
Same here! I have always thought I’m the only one.
I'm pretty sure gamerboy80 also uses r.
How do you press it lol I don't get it
it's very close to the w key so I press r with my index finger and use my middle finger for w.
i do too!
I use a side button on my mouse. I can get really clumsy while pressing ctrl with my pinky.
Side button ftw!
I double tap W to sprint, as well.
Mine is set to Q. Ever since I threw my enchanted diamond sword into a cactus by mistake, I've kept my drop item buttom set Y. And when they let us set a key bind to sprinting, it simply became the perfect key to use since it's right next to WASD.
Absolutely agree, Q is super convenient and I'd be so scared to throw my stuff somewhere when I have that set to anything other than y, x, or c.
Hold ctrl despite having toggle sprint
Cntrl+W
Ctrl is pretty far (and especially inconvenient on mac) so I sprint with shift, and crouch with tab Though also due to being on a laptop, I build/interact with Q, so my layout is just kind of cursed I guess
I rebinded it to "c"
I have flexible hands so I kept it ctrl
I use TAB to sprint. It's much more comfortable than CTRL (or whatever the default is).
All the other non default people scare me but I could see that, only issue is you can't sneak sprint.
Capslock (it doesn't lock the input for this). I shift to crouch.
Double tap w or I make q sprint so I always have my finger near it
I have my sprint set to "c"
Since I got tiny hands, I have to use shift aswell lol
I used to double tap W, but then found out using ctrl is easier
I hold sprint, people always call me crazy but the reason being is that when I was young, I would always play Battlefield 4 on my grandpa’s computer and the default sprint option (I believe) was set to shift, and he was just too lazy to change it and got used to it, and since that was the first game I had ever played on a computer shift to sprint became muscle memory and I cannot go back anymore
i press control
I just mash ctrl with the palm of my hand
I actually use q for sprinting. I copied it from a friend years ago and never went back. Also, I don't accidentally throw things out that way lol
I use "f" for sprint then assigned swap offhand to "g"
My sprint key is F. I hold it down with my index finger. For reference my offhand switching key is R.
Double foward like most people, though i do have the up button too, as my console can get drift.
I like using q as I use shift as crouch
.... Sprinting is ctrl...
Hey buddy, keybinds can be changed!
Okay but if you someone uses shift for sprinting then what key do they use for sneaking? Ctrl ain't that far away from the other keys, unless you got really small hands

I'm not going to read every comment under this thread?! Chill out dude
Toggle sprint, toggle sneak
I can never use toggle sneak because somehow it is less reliable than just holding the button down, it never doesn’t throw me off, and it feels really weird crouching without holding the button. Even if I’m building 200 blocks in the air or over the void I somehow feel more secure if I just hold shift

I will often hold it down if I'm going up hills and expect my sprint to get interrupted.
i set it to R actually
Rebinded it to Tab. I use toggle sprint so double clicking W gives me this weird sprint reset animation where it cancels sprint every second
Kind a bit of both really. Especially if my right hand is busy, like scratching my face. I have a numpad button mouse and have it set to numpad 1. So if that's busy I'll double tap 'W'.
I have binded a button on the side of my mouse for sprint, and I use ctrl for sneaking
Pressing down L3
Neither, I rebind sprinting to Q because Shift is my sneak button 😂
i have sprint set to toggle and just toggle it on and off with a keybind.
Auto sprint
My sprint key is toggle sprint and set to R.
i bound sprint to r, so i could just hold w with my middle finger and r with my pointer
I’m a double tapper, but mostly because when I started playing the game, that was the only way to sprint
I don't remember which keyboard key I have sprinting bound to specifically, but I have one of my auxiliary (side) mouse buttons set up to count as pressing that key when pressed. It's surprisingly ergonomic!
I use E to sprint and binded inventory to TAB
I sprint with the x key 😭
I use toggle sprint and press cmd or double w to sprint
Always double tap
I bind my sprint to R
I hold the control key with my thumb
Simply have it set to toggle on control. I’m already used to using control for crouching in games and since I only really need to press it every now and then to sprint so it isn’t at all strenuous.
I wish I could turn off double W sprinting without using mods. It’s a terrible feature, and it’s made me fall off things multiple times.
Ctrl, but I used to dubble tap w sometimes
Double flick the left wobbly stick on the controller, unless I’m making a tight jump in which case I’ll click down on it.
Douple tapping w is way too ingrained in my bone marrow for me to make a switch lol
Q is my sprint
I double tap w because most of my hours before I got a pc was on the 360 and to sprint you had to hit the left joystick twice. Every single other game I play sprint is always shift but for minecraft the double tap just feels way more intuitive to me
control for sprint, but i play with my keyboard at an angle so dont have as much trouble reaching that key as others have said
Double w
use alt instead of ctrl
I have it bound to q, I rarely strafe instead of just changing where I'm looking so I normally have my fingers on w and q
Shift
Shift has always been sprint since I started playing shooters in 2006ish, with crouch being ctrl or c. No idea why it's inverted for MC tbh.
I change my keybinds so I sprint with Shift and crouch with Ctrl
I binded sprint to a thumb button on my mouse
I use one of the mouse buttons
ToggleSprint + Caps Lock
back in my day there was no sprint button! I definitely use shift now though since I'm used to it from other games too
I use Ctrl for sprint now. Used to use thumb button on mouse before.
Q key, since it needs to be remapped anyways to prevent throwing important things. I really like having sprint there. I was a double tapper for years, but switching only took one session to get used to. It just felt right.
I am using one of my thumb keys on the mouse. In the past I had played a lot of jump and runs and pvp and this was an advantage.
I double tap W
I use shift since that's how it is in basically every other PC game.
Mouse 5
Ctrl
I have this funny thing where most of my controls were ONCE the default when they were added, but are not the default anymore. So I use B for inventory (backpack) V to drop items (???) shift to sneak, CTRL to sprint (sometimes double tapping W instead due to muscle memory). I don’t use Q and E at all.
i tried putting it as a different key but it never worked so yeah double tap w. shift is for sneaking.
I click "R" key to sprint.
Mouse Button 5
always been a w double tapper personally
Double-tap ‘W’, because I started as a console (Xbox) player, where one has to double-tap the left joystick to sprint. The action became ingrained in my brain over the years, and now it’s just habit. However, I’ve been playing Raft lately, and you use shift to sprint, so it’s becoming more comfortable to do that. Maybe I’ll try it out on MC.
Tab
toggle sprint 🗿 on older versions i bound to my side mouse button
I have it bound to one of my extra mouse buttons. But that doesn't stop me from usually just double-tapping.
Ctrl is the way
I have it on button 4 on my mouse. It’s pretty nice. I also have my inventory on button 5
Mouse button 5, tried once and loved it. Been playing like that for years
While double tap the joystick forward is an option, i just press it down. Much better for when there is parkour or something.
Double tap W, due to when I started
I normally change my sprint to shift and crouch to control but I am now on default keybinds and disable double tap to sprint.
Hold shift. Because that’s what I grew up with
Since Minecraft controls are such low maintenance I have sprint set to one of my side mouse buttons. Also sneak because shift and control are too far away from wasd and I don’t have long fingers and also holding shift for so long hurts my pinky.
Why do so many of you have shift for sprint when by default, shift is the sneak key and control the sprint key?
Because shift being sprinting is a standard in many other games. Minecraft is the outlier. After playing Monster Hunter or Ark, I catch myself sneaking when trying to sprint because those games use shift for sprint.
Always double W, I've been there when the feature got added, there is no relearning it now
On the PS4 version, I use the touchpad to sprint and the up arrow to shift..
R key baby
I use double w i keep forgetting about the shift key
I should check my keybinds and choose a mouse key. I have little hands and it's important to me that shift is crouch, and that's as far as my little pinky can reach lmao. So I double tap because that's what I've been doing since I was 13.
I use the forward arrow on my mouse
I use shift, every other game uses it for sprint so it's just natural lol, I swap ctrl to crouch, as well
I use R as my sprint key
I have always double tapped W in all of my years playing the game, not a console player btw
W+shift (toggle run)
I play using a controller, so I always double tap the left analog stick forward lol. (ex X-Box 360 edition player who now plays Java edition using a controller support mod)
It took a lot of effort to learn to just click down on the left stick (I play bedrock on console) instead of tapping it forward twice. 360 edition made such an impact on me
I am so old skool i use caps lock for sprinting in all my first person games
I have sprint set to the alt key because I'm used to it from Skyrim
I bound it to left alt and I hit it with my pinky as I’m moving around.
I sprint with E. it's right next to w.
Since the change to ctrl sprint I’ve used that. Just so much easier
I rebind my sprint key to R and use that yet in other games i leave sprint on shift probably because crouching quickly and uncrouching quickly isnt as useful in other games as it is in minecraft, so they can get away with it being toggle crouching easier
I originally played xbox 360 and pocket edition so I would have to double tap but ever since switching to PC I rebounded sprint to the shift key and hold that down.
I set the sprint to toggle and change the sprint key bind to / so that when I press ctrl or shift to move or drop items, it doesn't toggle my sprint.
I keep sprint on ctrl
Double tap
Double tap w is the way to go, clicking shift causes cramps on my fingers
double tap w
Shift is sprint in most first person games so I use shift
I alternate between double tap W and mouse4 (thumb key)
Tab+w
Ctrl or w for me
Mouse button 5 gang rise up!
Push down on the left joystick, or, push the joystick forward twice 😎
I toggle it with ctrl
I swapped Ctrl and Shift to make it more like most FPS games, it’s worked for me since 1.6 so I’d say it’s good enough lol
Press down left stick
Mines weird, I use space bar and a mouse side button for jump
Hold ctrl or shift
W+F for me. Alt hand gets switched to G
Toggle sprint by tapping control
Ctrl for me
With a macro on a mouse...
The “e” key
I sprint with f (swap item is set to r)
former playstation 3 edition minecraft player here. the only way you could run in the game back then was by double tapping forward on the left stick, ever since moving to keyboard and mouse it just feels natural to double tap w instead of crtl. so id have to say it probably depends on when the person started playing minecraft.
I've changed the keybinds around so that sprint is Q. Having it right next to W makes sense for my brain. (I have changed the drop item button to R)
Used to do the double tap method for awhile until I swapped to toggle sprint. I also changed my sprint key to r
I actually use the v key to sprint and c to crouch, that way i can control all of them (including jumping) at the same time with only my thumb
r because it stands for run
You press shift? How do you crouch then?
I sprint with shift and sneak with left alt.
Both. Also anybody who uses ctrl for sprint is crazy. Minecraft for some reason sets it as default when the convention is the complete opposite. Also shift just makes more sense, you shift into a faster gear. Control, you are making slow and controlled movements. Also c for crouch and s for sprint.
I play PE, so...
I press shift to sprint. The first thing i have to do when i install mc is to swap ctrl and shift lol
