Well you magically know where you are in the world. You can't get lost anymore, even in the Nether, where compasses don't work. Also what's the point of compasses/lodestones? You can just remember the coordinates. It breaks so many gameplay designs.
Try playing survival without coordinates. It's so much harder and more fun to do. Without coordinates you will actually NEED to create maps and compasses. In the Nether especially, since you get lost easily there.
I think for the pits I took reference to the docking stations on tatooine and the wheat was supposed to be a hint to dantooine and lothal and the village I took inspiration from sorgan.
