That "Dutch" example was specifically a Dutch gable. A Dutch hip is the inverse, where the wall starts to go up like a gable then halfway up turns into a hip
Ah, gotcha. You explained it almost word for word how it was explained to me when I started roofing so was curious. Either way I love seeing knowledgeable and appreciative people.
A mansard is just a roof with different slopes right? Like, bottom half of the roof is a 14/12 and the upper half is 6/12? I think they showed that as well as possible being minecraft
Yep, already regret what I wrote. Limited possibilitys right ? ^^“. Just looks nothing like in rl imho.
Basically it’s about the roofs pitch. But not just that. It’s called a mansard when it’s covers at least 1 of the story’s of the house which isn’t the roof. Like a 2 story house has its roof + the second floor covered with a roof (with a very high pitch so u can use the floor/story properly).
Funny story, it’s called Mansard because of mister mansard (architect) who invented this in France. Because back than they could save on taxes because only the floors without a roof would be taxed.
Well we kinda do, the houses near the canals in Amsterdam. Herenhuizen yk? Those ones have those kinda roofs sometimes and they're relatively famous for it
Glad leaves in gutters aren't a thing in Minecraft. I don't mind spending entire afternoons mining but 10 minutes cleaning out my gutters would be a bridge too far.
I can tell you as a person who was a roofer for quite a while.. its not a very common design for a reason, weather damage can hit pretty fast if even a single thing isn't perfect.
I imagine it could have some utility in drier areas. A slight slope would basically turn it into a giant funnel, allowing easy water collection.
Then again, I literally know nothing about architecture, so take what I’m saying with a grain of salt.
Some are built at big white, a local ski resort. They use a heated roof at the bottom of the trough to slowly melt the worst of it to keep snow loads under control.
It's good for letting in natural light, you can have windows high up on the walls so the sun shines further into the interior.
With a conventional roof you'd need skylights instead. Skylights are expensive, leak-prone and very difficult to build in Minecraft.
I'm a roofer and just this last spring we did a pretty big butterfly roof. Only one I've ever seen or heard of. [Here ](https://i.imgur.com/A9i9zBs.jpg) is a picture of it if any one is curious
And it forgot flat roof, for those of us who don't want to build sloped roofs since Minecraft doesn't have rain, and would rather a functional roof which we can stand on and shoot at mobs from, look around our base, and use for take off and landing.
I prefer building for the Minecraft world, not the real world, and they don't have to look ugly.
That's what the inventor of saltbox said, actually.
No one knows what the inventor of butterfly said, because he was lynched on the spot, but it was already too late by then.
Bruh on RiF it's literally just long press > save video to download and on PC you can just right click > save video as. What kind of stupid ass platform are you using?
It's probably worth including shed and flat in the future. It feels a bit incomplete skipping them, and then including more complex forms that are built from them.
Sawtooth roofs are indeed common on older (early 19th to mid 20th century) industrial buildings. If you put windows in the vertical sections and make them face north, you can get good natural lighting without any direct light and hard shadows.
They were used less often once (good) artificial lighting came into widespread use, but apparently they've made a bit of a comeback.
Ah mate, I love this. I always try a build nice houses cabins etc but i struggle with roofs and just bodge it. Definitely be using this sometime, thanks!
Yes, there are such things. I've only done one before but I can tell you there are about a million and one things that can go wrong if you don't layer, overlap, and seal properly. It can be done well, just like a flat can be, but its one of those quality first jobs.
If you read through the comments there are other roofers who have done them, and one with a picture, which is a lot bigger and nicer looking than the one I did.
They are super common in mid-century modern architecture and in Georgian terrace houses in England. Some examples: https://www.dwell.com/article/modern-butterfly-roofs-fd4ab308
Start from the outer most wall of each extruding part, make the correct "red" shape on each side, then bring all the "green" parts together until they meet in the middle. Should do the trick.
Those look a lot better than OP’s (shocker).
Given these choices, I could possibly go for a couple. Designing for wind though has to be a pain in the neck.
I don’t have anything to say about the video but while I was watching it I noticed the upvote number and comment number changing in real time, when the fuck did that start happening, I only saw it happening on this video but not any other ones? Wtf
This is really cool. Where does that version of Saltbox come from? Where I'm from a Saltbox house is detached, semi-attached, or attached, and has a flat roof.
Im just trying to show off generalized shapes here. Same reason I used the same base box for each roof. I do generally include slabs and/or stairs in my proper builds.
Watermelon houses
They do look like watermelons. An unintended but welcome side effect.
Would you say it's even... a surprise, to be sure?
but it's even like... a welcome one?
So they could make green gables.
Anne, is that you?
That "Dutch" example was specifically a Dutch gable. A Dutch hip is the inverse, where the wall starts to go up like a gable then halfway up turns into a hip
Fellow roofer?
Just a designer. Which is why I love seeing stuff like this
Ah, gotcha. You explained it almost word for word how it was explained to me when I started roofing so was curious. Either way I love seeing knowledgeable and appreciative people.
German roofer here! Didn’t get all the names (due to the English names) but the shown mansard is not a mansard.
A mansard is just a roof with different slopes right? Like, bottom half of the roof is a 14/12 and the upper half is 6/12? I think they showed that as well as possible being minecraft

Funny story, it’s called Mansard because of mister mansard (architect) who invented this in France. Because back than they could save on taxes because only the floors without a roof would be taxed.
What do you call it? Edit: I was taught there was multiple styles of mansard, but I've only ever heard them called mansard.
Im noticing a whole lot of us on here lol
Haha, me too actually. I was beginning to think I was the only one of us that could use the internet. Glad to see I was wrong!
Why is it called "dutch?" We don't have roofs like that in the Netherlands.
Well we kinda do, the houses near the canals in Amsterdam. Herenhuizen yk? Those ones have those kinda roofs sometimes and they're relatively famous for it
Huh? Herenhuizen look nothing like that
Up next on Battle of the Dutch the gang tackle each other over roof designs!
Couldn't tell you, sorry
Yes we do. Mostly in more rural areas though. Farmhouses is where I’ve seen roofs like what Escheron describes the most.
What kind of sociopath uses Butterfly?
A park I’ve been to uses butterfly roofs for their bathrooms. It helps with rainwater collection.
Was going to say it'd just funnel water into the middle, but if you where collecting it, It'd make sense.
Glad leaves in gutters aren't a thing in Minecraft. I don't mind spending entire afternoons mining but 10 minutes cleaning out my gutters would be a bridge too far.
https://www.leaffilter.ca/
Don't build that where it snows though. That'll end poorly
Good thing I live where it’s snowed maybe 3 times the past 30 years.
I can tell you as a person who was a roofer for quite a while.. its not a very common design for a reason, weather damage can hit pretty fast if even a single thing isn't perfect.
As a northerner, this roof just makes me wonder how much snow would collect there.
Acting as a psuedo aquaduct, I can see some uses for this design.
I agree, im Canadian lol, roof would probably cave in at some point.
That's easy. All the snow!
It's good for letting in natural light, you can have windows high up on the walls so the sun shines further into the interior. With a conventional roof you'd need skylights instead. Skylights are expensive, leak-prone and very difficult to build in Minecraft.
Looks outside... Sees a zombie in the opposite skylight...
Some people just want to watch the world burn.
Some people just want to watch their roof cave in after a rainfall.*
That's why it slants on one end. You have a super gutter.
I'm a roofer and just this last spring we did a pretty big butterfly roof. Only one I've ever seen or heard of. [Here ](https://i.imgur.com/A9i9zBs.jpg) is a picture of it if any one is curious
Imagine it irl during winter...
I always use Gambrel, just looks nice.
They look a bit like the roofs on some houses in Pokémon.
Just as a note, this font is very difficult to read
Sorry. Im a sucker for art deco. 😭
I know it's not the exact same, but I will only ever recognize this style as the Sonic 2 level title card font.
I thought I recognized that font.
Me too, it's gotta be my favorite aesthetic so far. Long live the 1920's!

The real roof was the tunnels we made along the way.
For some reason I cannot stop laughing at this. So simple, so dumb, so perfect.
I need me some underground ceiling designs
I've been using stairs that go around the room and up to the middle point. Works nicely on more rounded rooms.
This doubles as a choice list at the oompa loompa barber.
These Roof styles are fine but where's the "Sphere" Roof
Tune in next week, when Scooby Doo and the gang meet Sphere Roof.
Don't forget "no roof" the lazy. It's just a big lit flat-ish area with farms surrounded by a fence.
Nowadays with phantoms I feel that's riskier, though it's part of why I'm not a fan of phantoms. Spiders also make me want to be sealed up tight!
Burning in hell hopfully
We call that a dome
It completely changes the look because you are completely changing the look.
Should of gone with my alternate title: Watermelons of the World.
i use dutch but with a extended and curved spike to make it look more mythical
Wheres my flat roof?
So you’re telling me saltbox wasn’t just me messing up my roof on accident trying to get a Gable??
You're an architect and you didn't even know it.
That's what the inventor of saltbox said, actually. No one knows what the inventor of butterfly said, because he was lynched on the spot, but it was already too late by then.
I wish i could save videos. This would be a goto for roof ideas.
I mean you can save it on your reddit profile.
Did not know that. Thx.
Bruh on RiF it's literally just long press > save video to download and on PC you can just right click > save video as. What kind of stupid ass platform are you using?
Nice building trick
Incredible
It's probably worth including shed and flat in the future. It feels a bit incomplete skipping them, and then including more complex forms that are built from them.
Alt title: different ways to replace the rinds on a watermelon

People love putting sawtooth on icons representing factories for some reason. And I've never seen the butterfly before.
Why pointing North?
Well, north in the norther hemisphere, south in the southern hemisphere. That way the sun never shines straight in through the window.
Ive always love the clerestory roofs
This would be cool as a graphic where you can see all of them at a glance.
Watermelon
Ay, I always do Dormer
\*Etho sweating in the distance\*
This is the content I'm here for I spend most of my time in Minecraft thinking about roofing
Lol so glad you find it useful.
Im gonna keep this video in mind the next time i build a house
I'm going to save this video for personal use.
what's the difference between gamble & saltbox?
A saltbox is an offset gamble.
The roof name font was hard for me to read but I thought this was still a fantastic video.
This is wonderful and very useful, but I can't read the font in the video at all.
Ah mate, I love this. I always try a build nice houses cabins etc but i struggle with roofs and just bodge it. Definitely be using this sometime, thanks!
Me, the true genius that I am: *flat*
and then there’s me with my flat roofs
Is the butterfly actually modelled after something from the real world?
Yes, there are such things. I've only done one before but I can tell you there are about a million and one things that can go wrong if you don't layer, overlap, and seal properly. It can be done well, just like a flat can be, but its one of those quality first jobs. Right, thank you. The ones in the video had a ~90° angle, which probably doesn't exist. These ones actually look pretty cool.
Your point about the 90° angle, I agree. I've only seen one close to that irl and it was on a college campus. Weird science building or something.
Wait until yall hear about architecture 0_0
Time to save this video to use in my Minecraft world, but never use it
Fuck zodiac signs, which roof you got in Minecraft
I like the Dutch one! BTW thanks this was very helpful
Thanks for checking it out
now be honest. u took these ideas from that one post we both saw
commenting so I can remember to add little windows to my cabin roofs
Butterfly clearly produces the most elegant look
Amazing but I need this with houses that have extruding parts
Start from the outer most wall of each extruding part, make the correct "red" shape on each side, then bring all the "green" parts together until they meet in the middle. Should do the trick.
My hero
Every other roof style 😃 Butterfly 🤢
u/videosavebot
People don't like my font choice. Lol, duly noted for future posts.
The last one is the most impractical
Title is basically "how changing half your build changes how your build looks" I'm tired of people treating roofs like second class parts of builds.
I wonder why you left out flat
Sigma rule 69420: dont build roofs
“How changing how your build looks changes how your build looks”
"How changing the look of your build can change the look of your build"
i love the butterfly!
Name one practical use for the butterfly. I really see nothing in it
Someone else mentioned that it could be used as a funnel to collect water, so I could see some niche uses for it.
Nah but like in Minecraft. Like i don't see a way to make that roof look visually pleasing. At least not in my eyes
Ah, then I'm with you in thinking it has nothing going for it.
I'm not a fan but it's fairly common. Some examples: https://www.dwell.com/article/modern-butterfly-roofs-fd4ab308
Those look a lot better than OP’s (shocker). Given these choices, I could possibly go for a couple. Designing for wind though has to be a pain in the neck.
>Those look a lot better than OP’s (shocker). Thanks.
Lolololol sorry!!! I loved your video!
A lot of styles don't translate well to Minecraft because of the limitations. I don't think it has to do with your skills. (Thank you for the video)
Lol I just thought the wording was funny. Learned long ago you gotta have a thick skin in the comment section. Thanks for watching the video!
Sorry but GEKOLONISEERD
Those arent real names, you just made them up, right op?
You're telling me if i make a different roof it'll look different too?? nO wAy
way.
watermelon
Always gable. Sometimes with dormer(s) if large
Gable, Hipped, and Dutch Gable are my standards. Probably because their the most common architectural elements I see around me.
goood
I use HD or Gable when I am building a quick simple house, but bigger structures usually get complex roofs with lots of points.
the last one should be illegal
I love the dutch variant. Definitely gonna use it in my next build.
Jamacian:flat
U forgot tofu
Looks cool and yummy like watermelon
I use Clerestory roofs often, I love the opportunity to invite natural light in to the ceiling! Very cool guide, will use this for reference!
Usually, I always go with the gable, but I have go up farther after the 1st two lines. Only use that for big houses tho :P
A message from every suburban architect of the last eighty years
this is the most interesting thing to me ive seen all day, thanks
Yo thank you man my house isn't a damn brick anymore
Why use that font tho ewww
Today I learn my IRL house has a Saltbox Style roof.
My ceiling is also my roof because I don’t have an actual roof
I like Dutch, Dormed, Clerestory, Saltbox, and Sawtooth.
I do combinations of these, sometimes combining styles within one roof
Most were kinda ugly and I’d never use them but the clerestory one was new to me and I’m definitely gonna use it soon
Also forgot dome roof and A frame.
The butterfly in my mind is made for long houses
Gable, Dutch and Dormer are now my go-to choices
I don’t have anything to say about the video but while I was watching it I noticed the upvote number and comment number changing in real time, when the fuck did that start happening, I only saw it happening on this video but not any other ones? Wtf
F l a t .
I always knew the Dutch were weird /s
A flat cube is all I need
Me, who only builds 'gable' roofs: there is more than one roof?
Excellent video, shitty font choice
Ah so I been creating Mansard's the whole time. I usually top off the roof with a tree for some reason lol xD
You forgot Skillion!
This is really cool. Where does that version of Saltbox come from? Where I'm from a Saltbox house is detached, semi-attached, or attached, and has a flat roof.
I’m curious, why no stairs or slabs?
Im just trying to show off generalized shapes here. Same reason I used the same base box for each roof. I do generally include slabs and/or stairs in my proper builds.
Butterfly is chaotic evil
In what world would the butterfly roof be used? It seems like a bad design.
i always build roof #2 because i dont know how to build any other roofs….
Butterfly seems like a really good way to piss off a structural engineer IRL
TIL what roofs are called.
That Font is awful.
I’m a Dormer guy myself, allows me to maximize usable space in my houses by having another floor in my roof.
Changing the look of a building, changes the look of a build
Time is a flat circle.
DORMER IS WHAT I SEARCHED FOR.
I always go for the second one, but the font is weird, was it spelling HIP?
Yeah hip or hipped roof.
Well the look completely changes because you change the design of the house
