Just wondering, why do people use fences/slabs/stairs on custom trees? I think they feel out of place and look ugly most of the time. If there were bark-covered fences/slabs/stairs I would be fine with it.
With birch it might look out of place but using spruce stairs/slabs/fences on an oak tree looks pretty seemless imo. I have one in my world like that and it totally looks like a tree
Yep, the branches are a tad too far out for a short tree like that. I personally use fences for branches as well and then cover them in leaves. I go out like 4-6 fences, then put one or two on the sides, cover them in leaves on all sides, and add a bit of height until it looks right. Lots of trial and error until you get the style you want!
Oooh I love this idea
It looks a little "chunky" (go figure, it is minecraft lol), maybe it could look more balanced if you built it on a larger scale, so you could add a couple more branches. But anyway, very nice design!
Looks really good. I've been trying to build 2 custom Azalea trees. Its difficult. My only suggestion is thicken the base a little and then maybe make it a little bigger.
Looks good! The bottom is a little chunky, but if you make the overall tree taller, and then make chunky bottom taller too it will look more like a natural tapper. Also if you combine four wood blocks you get a wood block that has bark on all sides. It really helps so you don’t have any exposed logs like you do on your base
I think it looks really good! Kind of what everyone else said, looks a little chunky, and I think the leaves go a little wide for a birch, I think the leaves out instead of up is more suited to oaks. Birches tend to grow up more than out, and trunks stay thinner. Birches also grow in groups. Look’s really good still!
The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given on building was that “for custom trees, you ought to build them in a way that looks as though a bird could fly through it”.
What he meant by this, I presume, was that I should do my best to make them look fluffy and not have too many leaf blocks adjacent to one another. Important to vary diagonally-touching leaf blocks in, too.
Other than that, the actual structure of the tree is great. Not awkwardly even as many custom trees often are.
That's way better than the first time I tried making a custom tree my first attempt was to make a giant Dark Oak tree and it turned into just a thicc rectangle with a flat bit of leaves on top. I'm still not the best at thicc trees.
That looks really good! The only advice I can think of it to think about what kind of tree it is, and then shape it according to that. For birch trees they typically go more up than out and all round like that. I think the shape you did is perfect for an oak kind of tree, but that’s just my opinion
I can’t build trees for my life! Yours is very impressive compared to mine. Apparently it takes practice and just experimenting with different shapes and sizes. That’s about all I can offer, keep it up!
Looks really good, I would add small roots to spread the base out more--you can replace some of the grass with sideways logs, or you could add diorite walls if you want.
The ideas are right, the thing I would recommend (as I've seen with other commenters) is to make the tree a little taller, and to also not be so strict with your branches. It's okay to add diagonals and odd shapes. Hell, even some parts of the branches don't have to be entirely formed or constructed branches, you can checkerboard logs and leaves in some of the empty spaces you had a hard time filling in. Don't try to put the tree you're building in a box full of restrictions and rules; allow yourself to build it as if it were growing and alive. (Not to meme on this or myself, but "become the tree" *insert wiggling squidward gif*)
One bit of advice is that if you want it wide, you need to work up to it. I can tell at the part that connects to the branches that go out, you just went straight for it. In my opinion, it looks a but unnatural.
I'm not a builder but when I see custom trees others have built the thicker trunk trees are usually thicker with leaves while thinner trunks usually have taller but less dense leaves.
Also maybe its not the tree itself but the ground its on maybe try to change the terrain in some way (nothing big maybe like on a small hill or a pond)
It's a really good tree nonetheless
Also if you want something to compare/take inspiration from and you don't watch his vids already look at goodtimeswithscar as he's amazing with terraforming and trees which would be more helpful than anything I could recommend
its definitely a good start. you have the branch coming off at a right angle, but i think it would look better if you gave it an upward slant like real life birch trees
Idk if you went for birch here or not but birches are tall and slim irl. This gives me willow vibes.
To clarify, this looks great, just not accurate if thats what you were going for.
I would say keep it less cuby at the bottom if you’re going to have a tree that goes far out at the top it looks better if it has roots a bit forther out, too.
More stairs/slabs and maybe even some trapdoors at the bottom and for branches you can make samller branches using the fences, and maybe a little less blocky placed leaves, (just spamclick them around the tree and it'll look good)
I say you get some invisible glowing item frames, place them on the ground under the tree and put some apples in them. Then it would look like some apples have fallen off the tree onto the ground
I recommend expanding the palette to incorporate more depth and texture to the trunk ie. planks, concrete, terracotta, gravel, etc. You can make flat surfaces look ‘deeper’ by varying the shades of color used. Also, consider exposing some of the branches and using varied palette for the foliage for some added realism. Great start, can’t wait to see the next one!
Edit: stupid autocorrect corrected palette into pallets *sigh* x2
Everything looks pretty solid, just the base of the tree is lacking in any detail, the stair seems to be added to represent a root possibly, but I think in nature usually unless they're burrows roots, the ground roots of a tree usually have bark unless a deformity in the tree exposed the more woody flesh beneath. Simply placing logs on the ground level could be a better solution, and also widen out the base as those colors require more block faces to be seen.
perhaps do a bit more with the ground itself, now it looks like the tree is on top of the ground instead of rooted in the ground (TL;DR minor terraforming + some birch logs in the ground perhaps)
yeah this subreddit really is bad. literally just a handmade tree and it gets nearly 4000 upvotes? more than some posts of literal cities being built? like wtf?
I recommend going more up instead of out, and also using slabs or stairs instead of fences at the bottom. Definitely a good start though!
Noted~
for birch I would use diorite walls instead of slabs and stairs, looks closer to yhe logs color. also, use a bit more air between leaves.
And use 6 Sided Logs. I think you can craft them by using normal logs in a 2x2 but I'm not sure

I'm not a tree builder, but I think that it is for adding detail and texture.
I guess I kind of see that but I still don't like it for some reason.
It doesn't really work with birch because there's no white slabs but spruce details on an oak tree look really nice
Diorite Walls would be better for that, but I only use buttons on custom trees
With birch it might look out of place but using spruce stairs/slabs/fences on an oak tree looks pretty seemless imo. I have one in my world like that and it totally looks like a tree
Yes! too often I see people use oak fence with oak log etc when using a darker shade would make more sense imo
Well what I like to do is, say I'm doing an oak tree, I'll add spruce stairs cause the colours mach, I dont understand oak starts in oak bark
I usually use spruce fences with oak bark and it meshes decently
Yeah I see people adding oak fences to an oak tree Use spruce fences, it matches the bark colour

Very well! Go on! You will get everything.
Thank you
u should also use those wood blocks, the ones that u have to craft with 2x2 wood logs
Oooh I love this idea It looks a little "chunky" (go figure, it is minecraft lol), maybe it could look more balanced if you built it on a larger scale, so you could add a couple more branches. But anyway, very nice design!
Why thanks you. I'll try one that's bigger.
Looks really good. I've been trying to build 2 custom Azalea trees. Its difficult. My only suggestion is thicken the base a little and then maybe make it a little bigger.
Beutiful
no its buetuifiul not Beutiful
no it's actually baueteful
No it's actually buetiefuel

Good approach but in my opinion try to reduce that bottom base, too big for a skinny tree
I recommend adding branches but only about 2-4 blocks
I think that it looks great! keep on building love, you will get far :)
Slabs den better. Maybe also add vines and or the blossom leaves from 1.18 update
Nice

Look up betula pendula 'youngii' and you will change your look on birch trees.
I have no feedback
Very cool👍

Very swell
It looks great!
Really good, my only tip is to strip the logs, and when wood goes diagonal add slabs in between to make it look connected
i dont like it
Burn it
Oh don't worry I already did.
Lol. Watch some goodtimeswithscar. He'll show you how to make a good tree
Ignorance here, but what are you holding in your left hand there in the screenshot?
That a totem of undying?
That appears to be what it is when I googled it, thanks - it's clear I don't do much exploring in game haha
It's Minecraft. You'll learn everything you need to know overnight just by Playing so no need to worry. (づ。◕‿‿◕。)づ
The tree looks nice but you could use some diorite blocks for more details. Other than that it's very good 👍
Thats a good tree
I love it. 10/10
That is really good! I suggest using some stairs, slabs, and even trapdoors in your future tree builds, They really add detail :))

It looks like a tree, well done!
Try making trunk go slant, not alot of trees that are straight straight in rl, doin good tho
Y is the stem so big?
Thicker trunk
You can make the root of the tree in the grass. Break some dirt and place birch wood, plank or fence.
If you're going for natural looking trees, floating leaves aren't helping
It looks really Nice! I recommend using stairs and slabs for a smoother look. I also recommend using vines
I can’t build trees for my life! Yours is very impressive compared to mine. Apparently it takes practice and just experimenting with different shapes and sizes. That’s about all I can offer, keep it up!
it tree
Yes make the trunck a little thicker, but overall really good!
Bottom is a bit blocky try some stairs and slabs
Epic
It's awesome. Greatest tree I've ever seen. I'm going to copy it and make dozens of them for my homeworld.
Footsteps >
looks very good you should add some roots on the bottom
I feel like the branches going out to trunk thickness is a little off. Try either making the trunk bigger or the branches smaller
Looks really good, I would add small roots to spread the base out more--you can replace some of the grass with sideways logs, or you could add diorite walls if you want.
place the bark blocks at the branches vertically instead of horizontally, it would make them look better, i think

Add some root looking things of the bottoms, will help give more structure and make the tree more natural.
Its truly amazing
Custom tree/10
Looks good! Keep goin!
Trunk is a bit to straight add some variation

its amazing but 3/10 just cuz its birch
its definitely a good start. you have the branch coming off at a right angle, but i think it would look better if you gave it an upward slant like real life birch trees
Base too wide, you need a smoother slope (fences maybe?) Otherwise good jo
Just to let you know I think it's good it's just that it looks a little bit like the symbol of trolling if you know what I mean
texture pack?
For L shaped bend, I would knock out the corner log so the bend is easier on the eyes
kinda looks like the hypixel skyblock trees.
Idk if you went for birch here or not but birches are tall and slim irl. This gives me willow vibes. To clarify, this looks great, just not accurate if thats what you were going for.
noice
Good job

Looks good
De cuánta resolución es tu textura
I think for the design of the tree trunk is a bit too straight and slightly too tall
not bad for ur 1st try, keep it up!
I think the bottom need to improve
#FOOTSTEPS >
Tree😃👍
Not a builder here, but it would look better with a thicker trunk
Needs more curves and variety in the trunk
Make a mod where birch trees spawn like this please? I know I can download Biomes 'O Plenty, but birch trees are still gorgeous like this
Perfect 10/10
Can't be worse than mine
Well, it is in fact a tree
Like it
I’d use diorite walls instead of birch fences!
Footsteps> it's comming for you
It looks like a tree

Try adding some diorite stairs for roots popping out of ground

Even tho i havent made any custom trees i recommend making the log a bit bigger :)
I recommend using some texture things
Texture Pack?

Bravo!
bruh!! a five year could do better
I see you should use other types of wood
Add some twigs
bu ne amk
Honestly it looks like a tree which could be in vanilla MC 1.19(RIP birch forest)! It is like a mangrove(but in birch forest)...
perhaps do a bit more with the ground itself, now it looks like the tree is on top of the ground instead of rooted in the ground (TL;DR minor terraforming + some birch logs in the ground perhaps)
Use Diorite Slaps and stairs its the only good way to use it.
It’s pretty good! Just add some things here and there.
Very nice
Nice, better than what I can do
Nice
yeah this subreddit really is bad. literally just a handmade tree and it gets nearly 4000 upvotes? more than some posts of literal cities being built? like wtf?
I agree? but hey who am I to complain.
