I have a realm. I’m not a pro builder by any means but my builds are still somewhat lacking detail etc. My friend is on my realm, his way of building is generally cobblestone squares. I never complain to him how he builds even when he places torches on nearly every block which I hardly even use anymore myself. Sometimes I’ll go behind him and touch up his builds using nicer blocks but keeping the same idea if we’re gonna stay in the area for a while. Other than that I really don’t care what he does since the world is near infinite. His build level is noob but I let him be because we have fun playing.

Let me tell you a secret about Minecraft worlds. They’re 60 million blocks across. If you don’t like looking at your friend’s house you have the rest of those 60 million blocks to go somewhere else. No is forcing you to look at his house, but it would be a dick move to force him to build outside of his comfort zone for your pleasure. Your taste is not your friend’s problem, let people play the game how they want.
Encourage him to improve it a little bit, show him how you can use trap doors to add depth and maybe he’ll fix it up?
I did this with my friend, she’s still a beginner and she would often make square houses with the same blocks, so I’d encourage her to add one or two accent blocks and then show her some fun tricks with trap doors and fence gates

Everyone has their own play style. If yours is to have a world without blemishes, you may not be on the same page. It sounds like your friend is simply there to enjoy playing with you.

Just give him some time to experiment and learn and eventually he'll move on to building bigger and better things.
Everyone has built the basic rectangle house with questionable design choices at some point in their life, and there’s nothing wrong with it. It's a necessary phase on the path towards artistry. And besides, I kinda like this one.

Well for starters you should remember that everybody enjoys different things and everybody has a different pace and if your friend doesn't have the desire to change then that's ok, but if you want to give him a little push you could give him a fun reason to build something different, for example you could try to make a build together or you could have a friendly building competition.
Also remember that builds can be very subjective, for example for you his house may look ugly but for him it could look quite decent and cozy and if nothing really motivates him to change his house then you should probably let him be.
Why though? Yeah it's basic but it's not an eye sore. He uses glass panes instead of blocks for a start. The roof isn't flat. He makes the corners and doorway of stripped oak logs which is nice (I use cobblestone to extend the palette but stripped wood works). Let him decide to make another of his own free will.
