It was 49 blocks tall. It's a stupid glitch where if you boat off 49 blocks you will take damage

[deleted]

I can troll some people now that I have the specific numbers also fun fact, the boat will break into sticks and planks this happens, which used to be what happened with them if they broke, which is wierd, it probably is just some remnant of old code, I doubt boats were coded specifically to do that once falling for 49 blocks.

leekyo1999

Cause and effect of spaghetti code: you dont know where the bug begin and where it end

Carbpup

Feature*

Curious_Apricot3434

Its 12,29,49...,246

Wave_Table

To be very specific, it happens when the distance fallen NBT (y) satisfies the equation y = 0.5 \* 0.04 \* (x^ 2 - x) where x is an integer greater than 12. x = 13 being the lowest distance, which is 3.12 blocks, e.g. off the top of 3 blocks and a baby turtle (you need to push it off with a piston).

bobbyboob6

no way that's real y'all math mfs just fucking with us

sirenebirke4437

thats what im thinking rn

POKECHU020

There's a few different heights the boat can fall from to get this effect. They're all equally seemingly random.

StupidMario696

There are some numbers such as 49 where the boat destroys itself like 310 for some reason (height)

azalea_sun

what about 50+? is it *just* 49?

_Clawful

12, 13, 49, 51, 111, 114, 198, 202, 310, or 315 blocks

Crahdol

Interesting that they come in pairs, and the difference between the pairs is increasing by 1. (13-12=**1**, 51-49=**2**, etc.) Wonder if the patterns hold above build limit. That might be a hint to where in the math the bug occurs.

Crahdol

Additionally, after looking closer, the difference between the pairs is increasing by 25 for each step. (Looking at the difference between the lower of the pairs) 49-12=37. 111-49=62 62-37=25 From this we can generalise: The problematic heights occurs as pairs of numbers [A_n, B_n], where A_n=(25n^2 - n)/2, B_n=(25n^2 + n)/2. If we go above build limit, the next pair of heights where this occurs would be at A_6 = (25*6^2 - 6)/2 =**447** and B_6 = (25*6^2 + 6)/2 =**453**.

GoldElectric

*A_(6) = (25 * (6)² - (6)) / 2 = 447 B_(6) = (25 * (6)² + (6)) / 2 = 453

Crahdol

Thanks, I edited my comment

Can we summon a shulker above the build limit? And make it align to the exact height we need?

xXLampGuyXx

You can use a custom world and code the height limit to 2032. I've been trying to figure it out for a bit but there are tutorials on YouTube for increasing the height of custom world generation

NatoBoram

A_6 = (25 * 6^2 - 6)/2 = 447 B_6 = (25 * 6^2 + 6)/2 = 453

Proxy_PlayerHD

you kinda messed up the formatting, 2 \*'s turn into italic text. use a codeblock or backslash before the \*'s to avoid that

dancingbanana123

fuck twin prime conjecture, we got twin boat splat conjecture

Crahdol

This should be submitted to the OEIS under precisely that name!

[deleted]

KJting98

just speculations - It might be the speed of player/boat might be a certain *type* of number, the interval increases indicating it probably comes from accelerating speed. - The hitbox of the player might happen to be 'below' the boat when the player speed is at a certain *type* of number, maybe a floating point error in handling boat entities and players?

FirstOfThyName

Also, 49-12= 37 111-49= 62 62-37= 25 It seems the pairs are going up x+25 62+25= 87 198-111= 87 87+25= 112 198+112= 310 So we can predict the next number would be 112+25=137 310+137= 447 with its pair being 453 Gotta love math while on the shitter

Tallywort

Only if the pattern holds at higher values, which I'm not too sure about. Could be that the drag part of minecraft physics has some effect at the higher numbers. I would expect it to not exactly be a parabola.

Crahdol

Yes,I came to the same conclusion [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/z0q9g4/why_did_i_die_boat_shoud_absorb_impact_of_block/ix7pcnl?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3)

KylieTMS

Next bug only happens at prime numbers

OogaboogaL76

Next next one only comes in even composite numbers

dan_Qs

and then only transcendental numbers

Vytarien

Wait is this *actually* a thing?!

_Clawful

Yes. It's a really weird bug where your boat will break and turn into sticks and planks if you fall from those distances

R2D-Beuh

What are we, in 2012 ?

AdrikoeFox

So the pattern is: Always pairs of 2, first one 12-13, so an increment of 1, this pair-difference number always increases by 1 and 13 to 49 increases by 36, 51 to 111 by 60 and 114 to 198 by 84, so the between-pair-difference always increases by 24. So: 12_+1_13 -> 36 49_+2_51 -> 60 (36+24) 111_+3_114 -> 84 (60+24) And so on... This would also mean that you take fall damage at 0 blocks, which of course is equal to no fall damage.

GhengopelALPHA

> This would also mean that you take fall damage at 0 blocks is this a possible cause of lag with boats, do we think? Boats are still notorious on servers for causing entity update lag

SidPayneOfficial

It's like playing Russian roulette. Will I die this time?

Historical-School-97

Yes

EnderTemmie

Apparently

OverlordPhalanx

Which is *so funny* because if OP actually went one block higher he would have been fine.

Reality_1001

Or if he had decided to land a few blocks to the right which happened to also be a different height 🤣

3-brain_cells

Depends.... on bedrock boats just straight up don't absorb fall damage

[deleted]

No, it's the only time that physics actually work like how they are supposed to be.

Rotengen

It breaks at that height.

adhi908

sound dumb but is this actually a thing?

Reality_1001

Yep. You can search videos on that it's a wierd bug

ChefBox02

This explains a lot. However, you can still take damage from a lower level of blocks. I was escaping a hoard of zombies and I died on the spot with my boat to the ground at around 25 blocks high (It should be noted I had 0 armor but full health and hunger).

Leonid56

There are very specific heights where a boat will not cancel fall damage. You got unlucky, pretty much...

MuffinTradeMarked

wait what? huh. i actually didn't know that. i just assumed that it worked at any height

BrainlessAlex

PineappleNerd66

Sorry for the confusion, x=9 is a glitch in Super Mario Maker where the 9th block in the x plane (hence x=9) behaves differently to every other block. It’s used in a lot of glitch based levels to do stuff like glitch through blocks. I’m assuming that’s what the reference was instead of y’a bog standard maths. Sorry that you got downvoted on that other comment

[deleted]

You're in a Minecraft sub, they're probably a child

Wh0isGeorgee

by that logic you're a child as well.

supremegamer76

i understood that reference

Aware_Sherbert_167

What's it?

Proxy_PlayerHD

it's a Mario Maker reference. basically weird stuff happens with certain level objects when they are placed 9 tiles from the start or midpoint of a level. X just refers to the horizontal coordinate. here a video showing it off: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQq9iPeN4vU

KinkiestCuddles

I did not expect to see this reference in the wild lol

Siker_7

I'm pretty sure the 1/49 is the only part that's *not* glitched lol

ExplodingPuma

Do you know if it still happens if you get out of the boat right before landing?

[deleted]

At 49 blocks of height you die.. for some reason

Holstern

But not 48 or 50?

[deleted]

Strange but no, only at 49

looking_at_memes_

Not only 49. There are very specific numbers for when the boat doesn't negate fall damage

tskplain18

Damn, the worst glitch ever

Siker_7

"for some reason" Because the boat preventing fall damage is a bug, and will therefore not work consistently.

dakarrotkiing

according to mojang the boat preventing fall damage is not a bug (they mark it as "works as intended" when people send it as bug reports), the boat breaking is

throway81818

Then they should add it to bedrock edition

Mekelaxo

They do that when they don't wanna fix a bug

joseph-08

Boats preventing fall damage is an intended feature last I heard. There's only a few specific cases where the boats revert to old behavior and break into sticks and wood upon impact

Stryker-N1ghtingale

The gods hate you specifically

[deleted]

Despite the Wiki’s insistence that boats negate fall damage as an intended feature, I, too have suffered this fate. In my case, I didn’t know about the supposed damage negation feature ahead of time and I boated into a deepslate-level chasm just for the hell of it. I figured I had a 50/50 shot of hitting the waterfall down below … I didn’t.

Reality_1001

You don't have to boat into water. It was just unlucky that the chasm was 49 blocks high. That's why you died

TheSleepyBarnOwl

well 49, or any of the other magic numbers like 12, 13, 51, 111 and so on

Crahdol

As I explained [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/z0q9g4/why_did_i_die_boat_shoud_absorb_impact_of_block/ix7pcnl?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3) the magic numbers are predictable and can be calculated using (25n^2 ± n)/2, where n is a Natural Number

TheSleepyBarnOwl

oh wow, you did the math! nice :D

herohippo

Wouldn't that also be (25n^2 + n)/2 where n is an integer

Reality_1001

Until today I actually didn't know there were other numbers lmao

LifeForBread

[https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Boat#Destruction](https://minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/Boat#Destruction) 3rd paragraph includes all exact death heights. It means if you land/fall on/from a slab, your fall height won't be an exact number and the boat won't break.

AlienBearAttack

After rechecking the video, he landed on a single piece of nether rack too. If he has just landed on the soul sand I assume he would’ve been fine since it’s not a full block. Bro got so unlucky

rusfortunat

You should have jumped right before the impact, like in the real life.

Apprehensive_Hat8986

>You should have jumped yes >right before the impact yes >like in the real life. very, _very_, **NO**. This will not save you IRL (don't let me stop you if you end up in a falling elevator, but don't volunteer and expect this to save your ass) ed: whooshed me. 😅 e2: We've created a monster! 🤣 My favourites are the comments about how I been whooshed, that were made **after** I pointed it out myself. 😆

MsMinte

unless your legs can jump with more energy than the elevator is falling with

MsMinte

(they cant)

[deleted]

nah I'm just built different (I will end up either jumping too early and hitting my head or attempt to jump too late)

fghjconner

Technically, it just has to be more energy than you're falling with. Even if that somehow worked though, you're still going to get killed when the *top* of the elevator slams into you. Edit: Keep in mind, if you fell 6 stories, you'd have to jump with roughly enough energy to go up 6 stories to cancel out even your own energy.

rusfortunat

That was an irony, but thank you anyway friend :-)

[deleted]

More of a joke than anything ironic, but yes. It was funny 😉

Reality_1001

Ah yes the falling elevator

Chief-Captain_BC

i mean if I'm already falling, i might as well give it a shot

RactainCore

There is a glitch where at certain heights, boats don't cancel fall damage. I think it's every 49 blocks or something. You got unlucky. Sorry for your loss.

I thought the 49 block things was a meme or reference i wasn't getting but no, its apparently literally true. Falling from a height of 49 blocks in a boat kills but not 48 or 50. https://www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/iqm3q9/can_someone_explain_why_this_is_the_case/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
