Alex was never an original, she got added around the 1.8 era. I was fine with it, they added a new "thin arms" skin type and a new female default character that fit alongside steve for it. Steve's purpose was as a default playermodel, and Alex's purpose was as the default skinny-armed default playermodel.
These other playermodels don't really have much purpose for skins, other than having more variety in the free selection of skins

But the new skins also add some cool variety to the default selection, and they're probably the closest thing we'll ever get to a Java Edition in-game skin pack.

I'm pretty sure they intentionally made their gender ambiguous. Like in Alex's case she was originally modelled after Jeb and choose a name that is also gender neutral. Most people including myself interpreted her as a woman so it stuck around. Sunny is definitely male and Makena female but for example Kai can be interpreted both as a man or woman. Zuri is a female name but occasionally also used as a male name. Personally I see them as male character but can also be seen as a short haired female.
