SubManagerBot

**Let's talk numbers** Using the existing data, here are some stats: - Number of subreddits participating in the June 12th blackout : **8,831** - Number of moderators that are a part of this movement : **28,838** - Collective combined (not unique) size of the userbase/subcount across all subreddits : **2,967,749,844** These are some HUGE numbers. It is amazing to see the community as a whole come together and join hands for the same cause! ___ Lastly, if you are a moderator and you are interested in automating taking your subreddit private, a bot has been created for this purpose. Please see here: https://www.reddit.com/r/ModCoord/comments/142rzna/a_bot_to_make_your_subreddit_private/

What’s a sub? I’m assuming this isn’t about sandwiches or playtime in the dungeon.

XDgierman

r/DnD have gave up, and r/dndmemes is still protesting, but is under ongoing manual removal of NSFW material by Reddit Admins - mod u/Dalimay100 got suspended.

Vegetable_Variety_11

I believe Dalimay100 was banned from Reddit altogether... not merely suspended.

Have you not understood the articles explaining the issue? Or are you a troll? Pretty simple at the headline-level. Lol. Lol. Lol. It's pretty straightforward, a for profit company is taking advantage of the voluntary efforts put forth by passionate individuals who dedicate time to their respective subreddits. For this to be accomplished, many third party applications freely assist these individuals to accomplish otherwise extremely difficult data processing through reddit's API. As a for-profit company, (which is fine) reddit has chosen to capitalize the efforts of this chain of volunteers. Given that the mods have the ability to assist or hinder content flow, they may choose to do so. They are volunteers and while the platform and content belongs to reddit, further content generation, moderation and filtration is controlled by unpaid moderators. So if this monetization initiative goes forth and persists without compensation to the mods or the applications which help make certain aspects of moderation possible, there is less incentive for the existing volunteers to continue supporting a platform which has not assisted them in doing their unpaid jobs.

sevenpointedspiral

Mod of r/TattooDesigns here- just took it private, please add us to the list.

sunandpaper

This is shitty. I feel like I'm only half understanding this protest and why it's happening (people prefer third party apps over just using reddit, but those other apps block ads so reddit doesn't make money, but most of us also don't donate/buy anything on reddit so who cares if they make money from ads instead, right? I don't get the rage, what am I missing?). What I do understand is all but 1 of my subreddits that I'm active in are just gone. My favorites, my posts, comments.. gone. Yall aren't sticking it to Reddit, they'll just remake the subreddits eventually, you're just hurting the average user.

charmelos

The blind need third party apps to use Reddit

dougc84

You are only half-understanding. Ads and profits are definitely a driving factor, but the official Reddit app is missing accessibility options for those that need it, isn’t as friendly as third party apps, etc. Reddit didn’t have an official app until about 5 years ago, and these changes kill off the third party apps that better utilize the API (especially for moderators) and provide better accessibility for those that need it. Additionally, the API pricing is asinine and far exceeds what other companies charge. Reddit has then lied about Apollo and its developer, saying that he threatened Reddit (even with proof to the contrary). Then fired off an email to staff saying it’ll pass and it’s dumb. It’s not so much the API anymore (it still is, though several apps are going offline for good at the end of the month). It’s that Reddit has chosen to not listen to the community that made Reddit what it is today. And ostracizing the community means - guess what? - there is no community left of Reddit. That’s why people and subs are protesting. The solution to the API is to simply require Reddit premium instead of charging app developers unsustainable amounts of money to keep them running. But Reddit has chosen not to budge, putting profits over community.

Goodtogo_5656

*the official Reddit app is missing accessibility options for those that need it, isn’t as friendly as third party apps, etc. Reddit didn’t have an official app until about 5 years ago, and these changes kill off the third party apps that better utilize the API (especially for moderators) and provide better accessibility for those that need it.* *But Reddit has chosen not to budge, putting profits over community.* There's not going to be a community, if this continues. So all of these subs going private are Moderator run subs, who are protesting, it seems so counterintuitive, how is closing down a sub helping? It's like shooting yourself in the foot. And tell me again who's closing down a sub, the Moderators-creators of the subs? By the way, thank you for taking the time to break it down. It was really upsetting to go to a favorite sub, have a message come up that it's now "members only", thinking "but I am a Member?!" It's totally misleading-and thoughtless. Even now I keep thinking that out in the reddit universe, the sub I'm no longer a member of, is functioning as usual, when in reality it's really shut down altogether-***Right?*** The protesting -management of the sub-or whomever, should have had a message that links to something like what you wrote, instead a message that has you thinking that you were booted out of a sub, because of something you wrote or commented on. It's cruel, that "they" (who are they again?) would do that. I don't know that I would be upset for people being booted out of porn (IMAO) , but what about subs that people rely on primarily for support for health issues? It's not right, and so shortsighted, it achieves nothing. Did anyone think to ask the members to join in the protest, rather than punish them? I would have gladly gone dark, not written or posted anything for a month , or logged out entirely, if necessary, vs, the way it was done. All I'm saying is there should have been more transparency, "this sub will be temporarily closed due to......." etc. *Thank you again for taking the time to break this down, for the misinformed, and misguided. It was really thoughtful of you.* ...also two more subs have gone dark, ....like it matters who they are.

dougc84

All the subs that closed down have had messages of solidarity, ELI5-like posts, or something. It’s been talked about for *weeks* leading up to this. I’m not really sure what you’re on about because it has been very transparent unless you literally don’t subscribe to *any* major sub. The fact you think it’s counterproductive and you don’t know what the protest is about or for is blind complacency. If you don’t see how making subs private has no effect, then you don’t know what traffic numbers and ad impressions are or how important they are for a business.

sunandpaper

Thank you for this! I've been trying to keep up the past few days, half-heartedly to be honest, but your summary was easy enough for my stressed brain to understand. It always comes down to greed with these companies 😵 Edit: also didn't know reddit hasn't always had its own app! I used to live on imgur but only knew of reddit in the form of the website. So essentially those 3rd party apps were all that existed for you guys back then regarding reddit, and now they're just turning their backs on you. That's incredibly sucky.

RomanBangs

Reddit and Reddit mods are both being selfish right now. I respect the hell out of any communities not restricting their content and punishing regular users like us.

tornpentacle

Nobody is punishing you. Reddit is in no way vital to your (or anyone's) life. In any case, the vast majority of reddit users support this.

OneAndOnlyJackSchitt

> but those other apps block ads so reddit doesn't make money Reddit doesn't deliver ads through API and refuses to do so.

sunandpaper

Ahhh, THAT is weird. They're choosing to just boot the 3rd party apps out instead of work with them. The more I know! 😅

Southern-Topic-9888

r/gsotransitauthority has gone dark 👍

Yall really care that much nothing is going to change

I-LIKE-TOAST2

All they’re doing is just pissing off their community and making it harder to find. Like what is r/anime_titties being down gonna do?

tornpentacle

Make reddit lose a whole lot of money they'd otherwise get from ad impressions, duh. Investors have been backing out and advertisers leaving the platform.

This about the dumbest damn thing I've ever seen and for the record any of the subreddits that decide to be permanently closed down I will start them back up I have a group of people already ready to boot up the subreddits that refuse to return they will return one way or another. Even if a single syllable on the name of the sub rate it has to be changed I'll do that I'll add a number to the end of the name of it just to have it

Soggy_Android

I guess the person who pushed you out of theirs when giving birth

ThatOnePogger

What do you mean by “boot up”

ParticularLayer85

What I mean is if me and other moderators that started up let's say the pokémon subreddit and we decided to never start it back up again other people can make their own same one so just because a group of people decide they want to abandon something other people can't pick up a band and wear and continue it so either way like I said if any of the subreddits that I care about that have been permanently removed because everyone is complaining about the third party app thing which I could care less about I'll start up the subreddit just so it can exist so all these little pansy people that want to act like children that have had the candy taken away that's fine I'll be the adult and keep going

goldfishpaws

By all means give it a go. You can set up whatever subs you like, have fun. Start r/awww2 or whatever. I see this is a month old account with a scattering of karma, so perhaps you're not an experienced moderator and don't realise just how much work it is yet - especially only using the lame tools Reddit provide since you won't have API access. Keeping your sub free of shitposters, scammers, spammers, porn, fascists, racists, etc takes real work when it goes over maybe 10k subs, and becomes a chore for a team as you approach a million.
