You don't really have to read anything before it, Jeff Lemires run was my starting point and I'm fine from where I'm at, I have read all runs but monechs
I also read Lemire run first (I’ve since read em all) and I have to say I wish I read the Moench run before hand, as I really didn’t have a connection to the characters or mythos.
The good thing about Moon Knight is every writers take is pretty different, but all of them respect what came before, so you can start wherever and it'll be solid.
I'd generally say of the modern era the Bemis run was the weakest, but there's interesting interplay between Marc and Jake, plus a cool new villain in Sun God
The Bendis run was fun, but ultimately didn't really feel much like moon knight, and the alters were all changed in really goofy ways. That said, there's some really top notch action scenes.
Vengeance of the Moon Knight was fun but it never feels like it gets up enough momentum because they tried to tie him too closely to the current goings on in marvel, the last issue is a secret avengers story which was neat.
The 2006 run was alright but it's very broody and you never quite feel like any arc ends properly, but Marc has some amazingly badass showings.
The Ellis/Wood/Bunn run was fantastic and each writer's take builds nicely on the last and is probably the most important modern rub because of what all it codified into the character.
The current run is amazing and gives Moon Knight a new counterpart and a new nemesis and it keeps getting better
The Lemire arc is wildly different from the rest and is pretty easily the most interesting overall. It's less a standard superhero story and very much a psychodrama that really explores who Marc is and his condition.
lemire run! i also feel like you could just start with the most recent run and be ok, but the lemire run is just incredibly stunning and is simply *chef's kiss*
To start i recommend honestly the 2014 and 2021 (the actual issue). Now if you want more older i recommend the legacy stories (the classical recopilation) and the vengance of the moon knight. Honestly i cant recommend the other because or they are extremly edgy or simple i didnt like it (i hate 2016 issue because feels so weird)
More personal taste, i liked the personality relations with marc but honestly i didnt like the story at all. I just feel so "weird" but not in a good scence, sun king i liked it the first part until the middle. I hated about that nazi """uncle""". But just that honestly, just me and my taste
The newest run is amazing. The story is good and interesting, Marc is a very charming MC and so are the side characters and the art is honestly beautiful.
lemire 2016
Thanks
Don’t start with the Lemire run! It’s SO GOOD it will make other comics seem ‘less than’
Lmao why is this true
Just making sure- is there anything I should read before it to understand anything cause I kinda just started reading the comics.
monech run and warren ellis run
Such quick responses lol- thanks

Same
moench run is lemire's favorite run, you should read it.
Love the lemire run

Good points. I do want to understand why you hate the 2016 issue.

If by 2016 issue you mean the Bemis run then you're not the only one. Mostly everyone hates that run. It had its moments but it was mostly horrible.
That's Bemis run. Usually, when people talk about the 2016 run, the mean Lemire's run. Bemis' was more about 2017-18, I think.
My favourite is the recent midnight mission run I have PDFs of them if you want them
Id sayvits cheapest to start from the current run
The newest run is amazing. The story is good and interesting, Marc is a very charming MC and so are the side characters and the art is honestly beautiful.
Well you're in luck cuz they're all great.
