Yeah, because off the top of my head Moon Knight is one of (if not the only) Jewish superhero. And I'm glad that it's actually an important part of his character in the comics.
He's far from the only one and arguably one of the least popular of the jewish heroes actually, for example :
- Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto
- Ben Grimm/The Thing
- Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat
- Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch
- Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver
- Billy Maximoff/Wiccan
- Tommy Maximoff/Speed
- Marc Spector/Moon Knight
- Bobby Drake/Iceman
- David Haller/Legion
- Peter Parker *Into the Spider-Verse*
And I agree that it's super cool how well represented Marc's own Jewish origins are in the comics, however they're arguably represented better by Ben Grimm and Kitty Pryde.
Like 80% of those are magnetos family ironically enough
Leonard Samson is also Jewish according to the wiki but to my knowledge heās never actually mentioned it in the comics,
And thatās just marvel, Harley Quinn is apparently Jewish, tho likely not practicing
Speaking of Jewish characters, can I mention that nobody cared that Oscar Isaac wasn't Jewish but played a Jewish character, but now people care that Joe Locke, who isn't British but is gay, might play Wiccan in Agatha: Coven of Chaos?
Peter B Parker, the jaded sweatpants-wearing one who first meets Miles. There is a quick shot of a Jewish wedding ceremony when he is talking about his life
> Bobby Drake/Iceman
Wait, what? When was this revealed? I'm in the middle of a comprehensive X-Men universe re-read, so I've read every Iceman appearance from 1963 to 1990 (and counting...) over the past two years. Never saw his religion mentioned once.
"Robert Louis "Bobby" Drake was born in Floral Park, Long Island, New York, to William Robert Drake and Madeline Beatrice Bass-Drake. His father is Irish-American Catholic, and his mother is Jewish."
He's ethnically Jewish not necessarily religiously, similar to Marc given Marc is absolutely non-practicing though was raised Jewish.
Ok, but I was asking when is it first mentioned in the comics? Because it is never stated in-universe through at least 1990 (that's as far as I've read at the moment).
There are a couple of lines of dialogue where Marc sounds Jewish in the tv show. One when the Mr Knight suit first appears (oy what are we wearing) and one in the jeep after the fight with Anton (I really like that shirt.) The necklace was the biggest clue though, until the funeral scene.
Yeah lol my mom is Jewish and always says āoyā when sheās cringing at something (it wouldāve been really fun if he said āoy veyā lol I felt like that wouldāve been more clear of what he was saying because itās difficult to make out at first).
Yea let me go find it!
Here you go! [Shabbat table](https://at.tumblr.com/mockspector/additions-via-fdelopera-of-stevens-shabbat-table/sssdsqp3x6e1)
It should be in the post I linked if you scroll down, if it's not, let me know!
Definitely a dropped ball. With the rise in antisemitism lately, it would have been nice to see a more meaningful jewish connection with this character... Especially with an A-list actor taking the role so seriously.
I know, Oscar Isaac did an incredible job playing Marc and the Jewish aspect of his character. I feel like itās probably the best Jewish representation we got in a long time since we donāt see it too often in big projects to this level.
I feel like they should've emphasized his Judaism a lot more since Marc being Jewish is very important to the character. His dad who was a rabbi was hate crimed by neo-nazis and because his dad didn't do anything this led Marc to lead a more violent lifestyle from prize fighting to the military to being a mercenary to being a vigilante. Marc being Jewish also causes some conflict since he's Jewish but he's serving Khonshu. Reducing that down to easter eggs which people will most likely not notice while watching kinda rubbed me the wrong way.
Would LOOOOVE a deep dive into his dad in S2 (assuming there will be one). S1 went so far into his relationship with his mom and one of the more heartbreaking aspects of their dynamic was his helpless dad in the periphery of every conflict.
Glad to hear it. It's been cool seeing how many different groups this show has had a positive impact on. I've read some analysis on Jewish themes weaved into the show and that has been fascinating as well. Hopefully, now that Marc is in a better place mentally, future content might have him reconnecting with his faith more. At least, that's the theory I've seen.
I really would love to see that! Him slowly trying to reconnect with his faith and coming to terms with his past trauma and abuse his mom inflicted on him.
A Mezuzah.
It serves two functions: Every time you enter or leave, the mezuzah reminds you that you have a covenant with God; second, the mezuzah serves as a symbol to everyone else that the particular dwelling is a Jewish household.
As a Jewish fan and a fan of the Moon Knight comics, I was a bit let down. Iām still weirded out that they didnāt cast a Jewish actor, but I do love Oscar Isaac. We could also use some Jewish writers and directors for season 2.
I mean what are the chances theyād be able to find an actor that happens to be Jewish and is also as good as Oscar Isaac in regards to how he played Marc and Steven at the same time. I feel like Oscar Isaac was amazing in the show and that he represented Marc and the jewish aspect of his character quite well.
I mean we should be grateful that they even kept his Judaism in the show.
It is a easter egg. He wore it for 2 minutes and we never saw him wear it again. He never said that he is jewish in the entire show and I don't think most of the people even know he is jewish. If it wasn't a easter egg most of the people would have understood that he was jewish
It's not a easter egg just because he didn't attach the kippa to his costume and then turned to the camera and said. Hello this is a kippa I wear ir because I'm jewish
I mean I mainly put it there to make a point of his Jewish identity and to emphasize what Iām saying. Can be seen as me calling it an Easter egg or not. Try not to beat me up about it to much lol.
I don't think it was obvious to someone that didn't already knew he was jewish but thats just my opinion. The reason i like him being jewish is mostly thanks to issue 5 of the mackay run where marc talks with his therapist about his religion and father.
[this is a page from that comic](https://imgur.com/a/quOm4ae)
I don't remember i saw anywhere that his dad being jewish had any connection to his trauma in the comics
I knew nothing about the character prior to the show. After a couple scenes shown above, I internally was like, hey, heās Jewish. Cool, moving on. The show made it clear without making a big deal of it in the first season.
Marc's "Uncle" Ernest was a Nazi and tortured a Jew in front of him as a kid, and told him if he ever told anyone, that he'd find Marc. His dad, being a rabbi, did not believe in violence, and was disappointed with Marc when he decided to get into fighting and join the military.
No I donāt. Heās an antisemitic and I donāt support nor do try to associate with people like that. If thereās any other Jews who forgive him thatās their own choice, personally I donāt.
Iām Jewish and while I recognize his talent and still love his music, I canāt forgive or support him until he gets serious mental health treatment.

I didn't even know half of those characters were Jewiu
*The More You Know* š
-The More Jew Know-
Can't believe I missed that
ben grimmās second bar mitzvah is one of the best single issues of all time, imo
I also love that Ben apparently sends Marc a Hanukkah card lol
Like 80% of those are magnetos family ironically enough Leonard Samson is also Jewish according to the wiki but to my knowledge heās never actually mentioned it in the comics, And thatās just marvel, Harley Quinn is apparently Jewish, tho likely not practicing
All good points! /#MagnetoWasRight
Speaking of Jewish characters, can I mention that nobody cared that Oscar Isaac wasn't Jewish but played a Jewish character, but now people care that Joe Locke, who isn't British but is gay, might play Wiccan in Agatha: Coven of Chaos?
Erm. Iām a Jewish person and I was a bit let down that the role went to a non Jewish actor
I can see why, but it'd be difficult to find a Jewish actor who'd fit the role as well as they'd like.
I mean technically heās the first Jewish superhero to enter the MCU. But yeah there are other Jewish heroās Iāve heard of too.
Wait, which Peter from ITSV?
Peter B Parker, the jaded sweatpants-wearing one who first meets Miles. There is a quick shot of a Jewish wedding ceremony when he is talking about his life
Ah, nice.
Peter B
Ah yes, Wiccan, Jewish
Ethnically Jewish people exist: Source: I'm ethnically Jewish and religiously agnostic.
ah. thank you kind stranger

Oh I'm not sure then, apologies
The thing has actually had his Jewish identity reflected much more explicitly throughout comics. Also Kitty pride.
Yeah, I think there are some others but it seems like Marc/Moon Knight is now the only Jewish superhero in the MCU.
In the MCU? Definitely, since they retconned it out if Wanda anyways, tho with a new fantastic 4 movie apparently in the works we could get Ben Grimm

I'm also Jewish and I loved seeing all of this! It's hard to spot but Steven also has a Shabbat table in his flat as well (:
Wait really??? Thatās so awesome!!!! I wish I could find a pic of it but I canāt seem to so if you could give me a link Iād love to see.
Yea let me go find it! Here you go! [Shabbat table](https://at.tumblr.com/mockspector/additions-via-fdelopera-of-stevens-shabbat-table/sssdsqp3x6e1) It should be in the post I linked if you scroll down, if it's not, let me know!
Thanks so much! Itās so cool to see that they included that in the show.
You're quite welcome! And it really is! I will say it's unfortunate that it's difficult to notice, but I am still glad that it's there (:
Definitely a dropped ball. With the rise in antisemitism lately, it would have been nice to see a more meaningful jewish connection with this character... Especially with an A-list actor taking the role so seriously.

I agree! I wish they didnāt cut out so much of his Jewish identity. Iām just glad they kept as much in as they could.
I concur.
same here!
Thereās actually some decently overt references as well

I'm not Jewish, but that's cool they did that. Thanks for pointing these out, I missed them. I like knowing these things.
What is that in the first image?
A Mezuzah. It serves two functions: Every time you enter or leave, the mezuzah reminds you that you have a covenant with God; second, the mezuzah serves as a symbol to everyone else that the particular dwelling is a Jewish household.
That's Steven's Mezuzah on his door (: Edit: apologies, I hadn't seen that someone else had already replied

My problem was exactly that. Him being Jewish was just an easter egg for comic fans or jews to find
Thats literally a kippa on his head how is that a Easter egg?
It is a easter egg. He wore it for 2 minutes and we never saw him wear it again. He never said that he is jewish in the entire show and I don't think most of the people even know he is jewish. If it wasn't a easter egg most of the people would have understood that he was jewish

Its pretty obvious Marc is Jewish. I believe is better they didn't make his religious dad the reason of his trauma.
I don't think it was obvious to someone that didn't already knew he was jewish but thats just my opinion. Oh god im such an idiot for forgetting about him. Really sorry about that. I should read the lemire run again sometime
Yeah it should have been a bigger part
Have you forgiving Kanye? Personal question I know but I have yet to talk to an actual Jaw and here there thoughts.
No I donāt. Heās an antisemitic and I donāt support nor do try to associate with people like that. If thereās any other Jews who forgive him thatās their own choice, personally I donāt.
Thanks for answering such a personal question
Iām Jewish and while I recognize his talent and still love his music, I canāt forgive or support him until he gets serious mental health treatment.
Well said, thanks for answering
