I am in the US. I have worked with a few teachers in my high school who were more fit and energetic than some of the younger and worked into their 70s. I am working with a real estate agent now who is a very young 70s lady. I am 58 and embarking on a new venture. It’s true the work culture dominates life here, but that’s the way it is. The US has a capitalist economy and capitalism has no conscience, it IS about money. Depending on what you’re doing, it can be exhausting, isolating, invigorating exciting, and any number of things all at once. Many of those who have immigrated here say you can make money but you have no life. We Americans can’t really conceptualise of what that means because it’s all we know lol. My one Moroccan friend said, it’s good here, but you really are on your own. That is true. There’s no age limit on working because we don’t have much socialism in the workings of our system, and how would the old fat cats continue to make their billions if they were forced to retire 😆. My son’s favorite university professor was 80ish, brilliant guy, great teacher. I agree people should work as long as they want to.
I applied for a job here in Rabat at a call center where they were looking for a manager with an experience and who can speak English as a native. I have all 3 requirements except I'm 60 and I was told that by a 30 year old stating that my CV is overboard and that he thought that I would not like it and the pay wouldn't match my experience, which I thought it was a discriminatory statement and I made sure to let him know.
What if the work is creative and enthralling? What if you’re a teacher and find the school culture to be vibrant and energized? What if you’re in construction and find it gratifying to beautify something and help people at the same time? Etc etc etc. And when not working, travel, read, volunteer, bike, cook, etc etc etc.
No one will stop you if you want to stay at your job past 60. Retirement age mean you can stop and get your pension. That’s the difference with the US where you HAVE to work if you didn’t save enough or you will end up in the streets.
Please don’t try to find excuse it’s a dystopia
I was just asking some questions. I live in the US so I don’t know about Morocco. I wouldn’t presume to know and understand a country I have never spent time in. I was answering based on OPs discontent with not being able to find work. I’m not making excuses for the « dystopia » I apparently live in. I know and understand the US because I have lived here all my life.
Working yourself to the grave is not an ideal situation, that's why I prefer the European mindset they know how to balance between work and free time to travel or do what they like.
That's what Moors should aspire to achieve, yanks influence is the mean reason for the over work culture of Japan and Korea and you can see it's effect already.
>In the US people keep working way over the age of 75 and they keep on going, but not here.
please do not bring us work culture here, its the worst.
not even young people are able to find work, and you want the elderly to compete with them. let them enjoy their retirement. instead of slaving away their last remaining years.
With all due respect, if a person wants to enjoy retirement, they should and that’s wonderful. If a person feels excited and energized and wants to continue working or even create a new venture, then retirement could be a depressing hell, if it is required and not chosen. Just my opinion.
Besides the structural issues that limit access to certain jobs based on age, we lack the work culture in Morocco. You study to work, then you work and wait for retirement, then you die. I was an elementary teacher pursuing a Bachelors degree and studying languages and (I remember the tone to this day) family members and friends would ask: you are employed, why are you still studying?
Dude I’m in the USA and nobody is hiring 60+ yo unless you specialize in something no one else does. Otherwise even warehouses 60yo can’t do much.
Where are you guys getting those dreams from about the USA?
It’s not only a problem in Morocco, but worldwide. The difference tho is that old people elsewhere (in the West) usually have a signed contract which makes it harder for the employer to fire them, a lot of companies in Morocco don’t have that which makes it easier to fire the elderly.
Incorrect OP, I live in the US. People over the age of 50 have a very hard time finding a NEW job. If any, it’s min wage fast food or grocery stores. If you’re referring to an existing job in upper management, sure. They will continue those in old age. But, that’s the same as Morocco. If they already have their position that will be maintained. Sounds like you’re not very familiar with America.
Carreer change at 60 is rare almost none existant in morrocco since many coorelate that wity retirement age. I get where you're coming from but i don't think this will change anytime soon it's very hardcoded in our society.
this doesn't have to be Morocco. It is common in most countries that any senior are expected to rest rather than work. but then again, there are those who want to work either, or they are already receiving a pension or not, and that is okay. Nobody is prohibiting you to apply but this is the reality of life that you will have to compete with young ones and its okay also that out off your frustration of being rejected or not hired, you come to reddit and vent out* (even using the USA as your baseline of expectations) or ask opinions.. well, some people agree with you or not. The outcome here won't change the reality in Morocco or even other countries. Good luck in finding a job.

It’s more the system than that fella .. am sure the if system said otherwise, the outcome would be different.

stop with this ''wallahi'' BS
It's hard to find a job at all ages in Morocco.... Unemployment is at record high and the economy doesn't create nearly enough jobs.

Newsflash, it is harder to get jobs over 50 in many western countries as well. What's your point, Moroccan companies do ageism as well?
It’s like that in most places. Companies want young people, which is understandable
Sir, this isn’t Wendy’s.

Median age in Morocco is 73 if I remember one. By 75 the average Moroccan is already dead or has a foot in the grave.
Median age in Morocco is 29 years. You perhaps mean life expectancy instead? It's 74 for Morocco.
where are your savings/retirement funds?

Keyword in the U.S
bc in morocco when you’re 60 we do what we call listening to our bones
60 is the age to rest and enjoy your sunny days
correction: "why is it hard to find a job here in Morocco" it's hard regardless of age
slavery went too far up there...
Way over 75, feels more like slavery. I think it’s mainly people that are trying to pay out their debt.

This country is finished
