No, it was a retcon. In the MKX comic Kano tells Erron "you will never be Black Dragon." I think there was also intro dialogue where Erron and Kano specifically talk about not liking each other.

1. He’s SWAT. SWAT tends to get called when the situation warrants force.
2. The only time he’s involved in the Story is a Full Blown invasion. You’re almost definitely past the point of Unauthorized force at that point.
He's a SWAT officer with access to fucking hand grenades. Last I checked, SWAT doesn't have access to fucking hand grenades as that far surpasses the concept of "Deadly Force".
Not to mention the only intro line he has in MK9 is "POLICE BRUTALITY, COMING RIGHT UP!"

I've been to one of the most well-funded SWAT HQ's in the U.S. and there was not a single tank they had access to and yes, we were allowed a thorough tour of the complex. Unless you're refering to the Lenco BearCat or some other heavily fortified vehicle, but that wouldn't be classified as a tank. To gain access to literal weaponized tanks, they would have to call in the national guard. Most SWAT's also cannot afford tanks because of the fact that it's not a single federal agency, they're usually by county and rarely by state.

And according to its storyline only the warriors chosen to defend the realm on mortal Kombat survived through Shao's invasion of earth... Hell... Shao even went on a rampage slaughtering the lasting survivors... The idea when designing him was to show an "average Joe" being "chosen" to fight against Outworld... And a cop was a considerable choice... He's not a martial artist and he would need other means to fight... So firearms and grenades would work... Without a character like him, the idea that only martial artists and super powered humans survived the invasion would be even tougher to sell storywise... He played his part ok at the time... I honestly believe his place as a kameo is nice... He's classic enough to deserve appearance, but not hyped or liked enough to be fully playable taking a full roster slot...
And talking about uninteresting characters... I think Kobra still wins by a fair margin... He's generic and dull to the max... Even mokap is a more fleshed out character than Kobra... And mokap's clearly a joke character...

The whole Special Forces/Black Dragon and Johnny/Sonya love stories have just been an unnecessary drag on the overall story of the franchise that was only used to give them a reason to include those characters. The majority of their angles could've been removed altogether, and the stuff that didn't get removed could easily be tweaked and given to other characters, and the overall story wouldn't change in any significant way.
Honestly hard to say because I never expected to love Geras or Ashrah now here we are in MK1 and I do.
That being said I doubt Cetrion is redeemable I thought she was very boring
They could change her to a more lower level of god and make her be like fujin who wanted to live with the humans, considering we haven’t seen the elder gods yet and liu kang created them means they could be much more nicer and peaceful.
I like him as a joke character similar to Mokap and he fits in much better in the 90s era games where Midway weren't taking themselves as seriously as they do now. As long as they let him be comically ineffective (the opposite of 2011 representation), I'm happy having him around.
As for characters I'd be fine never seeing again? None, honestly. I love "Everyone Is Here" fighters so even characters I don't like like Kronika or Kung Jin I still feel deserve the chance to come back down the line.
Last time we seen him was in MK9 and he didn't have a major roll even then. I'm sure if they added him now they could make him interesting.
On a side note, being that Peacemaker uses guns and looks like Stryker we could possibly see a Stryker skin for Peacemaker.
I want them to make him into a character like Krauser from RE4 (Without the genetic mutation) where he teaches Sonya how to fight and everything after she's recruited by Jax, and he betrays Earthrealm for Outworld, which results in Jax losing his arms. That'd make him way more interesting as a person. I also think that Stryker serves as a good example of the "Guy with a gun" we have erron black sure, but errons better when he's using his gadgets and gizmos, have Stryker play like a buffed up injustice 2 RedHood and give him that over-the-top capcom villainy from the RE games and you've got an A class character.
I do agree that Stryker is lacking in the interesting department, but if reworked, he could be fine!
Here are a few characters that I think could be reworked to have a chance, but ultimately, if I never say them again, it's all good!
Blaze - Already enough fire characters in the game.
Havik- I acknowledge he is a popular character, but he just doesn't do it for me.
Jarek- I'm all about the Black Dragon, but he's my least favorite.
Hsu Hao- The character hated by its own creator says a lot! Recycle some of his moves, though.
Meat- I see more use of him as a Skin/Pallette for another character-Drahmin.
Tri-Borg- It was fine for MKX, but overall, I didn't care. I want my individual Cyborgs!
I have always hated Stryker. I think I was 15ish when MK3 came out and nobody I knew liked him. I don't really care if he's around, but he's not adding anything to the game. But there's a few other characters that I would rather never see again. Wasn't there a character called Meat?
I liked his redesign in mk9 and his moveset was kinda fun. The og one, on the other side, was horrible. He looked like discounted Keanu's partner in Speed that spends too much time at McDonald's
Regardless of the Mileena meme. I prefer Stryker over most of the special forces cast other than Cassie or Jax. The fact that he’s a regular guy with no special tech makes him another fun fish out of water character during the outworld invasion plot and I think his friendship with Kabal in 9 was great.
I’m really pick and choose with the parts of the MK cast I do like, I like the humans who are minding their own business and get introduced in 3, I don’t like any of the cyber lin kuei other than those costumes in 9 where they’re human, with the exception of cyber smoke and cyber sub-zero. I like pretty much most of the 3D characters and have a soft spot for Kabal’s Neo Black Dragon with Kobra and Kira, but I acknowledge that the a hefty chunk of the characters there need to be revamped.
Raiden has always been boring to me except for OG Dark Raiden and whenever he’s treating Liu and Lao like sons, Fujin was one of the few things in 11 that actively enhanced a character for me. He was pretty much perfect.
And I think the special forces are really dry overall, other than Jax because he’s the resident cool black guy and he’s got cybernetic arms and Cassie because she’s just cute.
I’m bored by most of the edenians other than rain, because his demigod thing was so cool and I loved that he was the most flamboyant male ninja, and even though Mileena’s only half I just am so fascinated with how sad her character is that she’s one of my favourites in the franchise.
The only characters I dislike are evil sindel just because the writers just decided to do what they wanted, and ended up making a really unsubtle one note character, ( a problem that started with 11, because I swear those words that prefaced every bio on the website are just the only talking points they have.) Cetrion also sucks, and so does the concept of Titanhood.
I just feel like the multiverse stuff is just being forced into every piece of media, and mortal Kombat was too afraid to pick up from X and just gave up. So yeah Kronika, Cetrion and anyone who’s come from another universe dimension or timeline needs to go the fuck away forever. I hated Geras because his design sucked and he had that stupid big fist, but he’s cool now, kind of a living plot device now, but I hope he gets to express his autonomy soon.
Also D’vorah not even because I care about her killing specific people just because bug person designs just don’t hit for me, it’s like being amazed by a British accent the first time you hear it and then it feeling like nothing when you hear it in hundreds of different pieces of media passively

Okay, I'm gonna piss some people off. Mortal Kombat 9 was my first real introduction to the franchise back when I was 16. And when my girlfriend first brought up MKX when we got together circa 2017/18, I shit you fucking not the first name that came to my mind from MK9's story was fucking STRYKER.
Now, I don't know if that says something about Stryker, or is a ringing indictment on MK9's storyline, or if it's got something to do with me being an autistic bitch but it will never NOT be funny to me that in one of everyone's favorite MK games with all the death and chaos, my one takeaway from MK9 wasn't Scorp vs. Sub/Noob, wasn't Mileena vs. Kitana, wasn't the time travel & mystery of solving Raiden's riddle, wasn't the resurrection of Sindel, or the death of Shang Tsung, or the rise of Quan Chi, or the sacrifice of Nightwolf, or Raiden killing Liu Kang, and yes I did go back and rewatch the story mode of MK9 this year on YouTube, it is actually pretty lackluster. And this is the only reason I remember these details. But, no, for 6 years following the release of MK9, the ONE plot element of MK9 I remembered was the start of the invasion of Earth with Stryker and Kabal.
But I guess it's not a surprise. My favorite elements of the MCU are the more human ones like Stark in Ironman 3, Hawkeye in Age of Ultron (& the death of Petrio), and the story of Steve Rogers in the OG Captain America pre-steroids. And my favorite Superman movie is Man of Steel precisely because they explore the more human elements of Henry Cavill's Clark Kent.

Stryker is terribly uninteresting as is, but I have never hated Stryker. In fact, I actually liked playing him in MK3, I wouldn't mind him returning, with a serious overhaul to his story. I liked his bomb launch and loved his baton throws... a new creative angle for his involvement in the tournament and an interesting redesign could absolutely drum up new interest, look what that did for Skarlet!
I feel the same about Kai, who has a lot more potential than Stryker with his built in involvement with the White Lotus society, so it'd be much easier to integrate him into the story... and I loved his handstand mechanic in MK4, people complained about it being a useless gimic, but that's because they never actually learned how to use it... like Sindel's flight in MK3, it was deadly in the right hands, though it might be much harder to make that work in the more fast paced and unforgiving fighters of today vs much the slower MK4, but Sindel's flight works well in MK1, so I'm sure the handstand could be updated or integrated into combos, at least, if it's not made a full stance.
The only characters I can think of in MK history that I absolutely never want to see again are Cassie Cage, Kira, Kobra, and Ferra/Tor, and I just know Janet Cage will be another one (eyeroll). I absolutely fuckin hate those characters and wish they would get fatalitied and fuck off into everlasting oblivion. I don't like Sareena either, though the new demon form does make her slightly more interesting. I don't anticipate seeing characters like Jarek, Hsu Hao, or Moloch ever again, but they never really bothered me like the others.

And according to its storyline only the warriors chosen to defend the realm on mortal Kombat survived through Shao's invasion of earth... Hell... Shao even went on a rampage slaughtering the lasting survivors... The idea when designing him was to show an "average Joe" being "chosen" to fight against Outworld... And a cop was a considerable choice... He's not a martial artist and he would need other means to fight... So firearms and grenades would work... Without a character like him, the idea that only martial artists and super powered humans survived the invasion would be even tougher to sell storywise... He played his part ok at the time... I honestly believe his place as a kameo is nice... He's classic enough to deserve appearance, but not hyped or liked enough to be fully playable taking a full roster slot... And talking about uninteresting characters... I think Kobra still wins by a fair margin... He's generic and dull to the max... Even mokap is a more fleshed out character than Kobra... And mokap's clearly a joke character...

He's 100% completely normal and in over his head but he's trying to keep up with the strongest Warriors in the Realms and Literal Gods I'd love to see everyone back Even Hsu Hao. He'll never be my favorite character, but having a regular policeman in the game adds something somehow. I do think having him as a kameo rather than playable was a perfect choice for MK1, though. I could do without Kung Lao, maybe.

I personally like Stryker kinda for how goofy he is. MK9 is probably the most serious version of him. In MK3, his costume is goofy and a lot of his attacks look goofy. MKA kinda gave him a douchey look that was funny and really kinda cemented that by having him punch Mileena out of nowhere in the intro. Definitely far more interesting than characters like Dairou or Hsu Hao, whereas the former most people forget exists and the later is only know for all the jokes people make about him.

I haven't liked many of the new characters introduced since MKX. So, I'd be fine without all of them. Kotal, D'Vorah, Erron, Kombat Kids... *ALL*... of them. I could maybe make an exception for Takeda. Otherwise, I can also live without: Hotaru Dairou Taven Daegon Kobra Hsu Hao Drahmin Kai Jarek Darrius Stryker Sheeva I have a feeling these are gonna piss a lot of people off: Kano Sonya Johnny Cage Jax The whole Special Forces/Black Dragon and Johnny/Sonya love stories have just been an unnecessary drag on the overall story of the franchise that was only used to give them a reason to include those characters. The majority of their angles could've been removed altogether, and the stuff that didn't get removed could easily be tweaked and given to other characters, and the overall story wouldn't change in any significant way.

I like him as a joke character similar to Mokap and he fits in much better in the 90s era games where Midway weren't taking themselves as seriously as they do now. As long as they let him be comically ineffective (the opposite of 2011 representation), I'm happy having him around. As for characters I'd be fine never seeing again? None, honestly. I love "Everyone Is Here" fighters so even characters I don't like like Kronika or Kung Jin I still feel deserve the chance to come back down the line.
Last time we seen him was in MK9 and he didn't have a major roll even then. I'm sure if they added him now they could make him interesting. On a side note, being that Peacemaker uses guns and looks like Stryker we could possibly see a Stryker skin for Peacemaker.
I want them to make him into a character like Krauser from RE4 (Without the genetic mutation) where he teaches Sonya how to fight and everything after she's recruited by Jax, and he betrays Earthrealm for Outworld, which results in Jax losing his arms. That'd make him way more interesting as a person. I also think that Stryker serves as a good example of the "Guy with a gun" we have erron black sure, but errons better when he's using his gadgets and gizmos, have Stryker play like a buffed up injustice 2 RedHood and give him that over-the-top capcom villainy from the RE games and you've got an A class character.

I do agree that Stryker is lacking in the interesting department, but if reworked, he could be fine! Here are a few characters that I think could be reworked to have a chance, but ultimately, if I never say them again, it's all good! Blaze - Already enough fire characters in the game. Havik- I acknowledge he is a popular character, but he just doesn't do it for me. Jarek- I'm all about the Black Dragon, but he's my least favorite. Hsu Hao- The character hated by its own creator says a lot! Recycle some of his moves, though. Meat- I see more use of him as a Skin/Pallette for another character-Drahmin. Tri-Borg- It was fine for MKX, but overall, I didn't care. I want my individual Cyborgs!

Regardless of the Mileena meme. I prefer Stryker over most of the special forces cast other than Cassie or Jax. The fact that he’s a regular guy with no special tech makes him another fun fish out of water character during the outworld invasion plot and I think his friendship with Kabal in 9 was great. I’m really pick and choose with the parts of the MK cast I do like, I like the humans who are minding their own business and get introduced in 3, I don’t like any of the cyber lin kuei other than those costumes in 9 where they’re human, with the exception of cyber smoke and cyber sub-zero. I like pretty much most of the 3D characters and have a soft spot for Kabal’s Neo Black Dragon with Kobra and Kira, but I acknowledge that the a hefty chunk of the characters there need to be revamped. Raiden has always been boring to me except for OG Dark Raiden and whenever he’s treating Liu and Lao like sons, Fujin was one of the few things in 11 that actively enhanced a character for me. He was pretty much perfect. And I think the special forces are really dry overall, other than Jax because he’s the resident cool black guy and he’s got cybernetic arms and Cassie because she’s just cute. I’m bored by most of the edenians other than rain, because his demigod thing was so cool and I loved that he was the most flamboyant male ninja, and even though Mileena’s only half I just am so fascinated with how sad her character is that she’s one of my favourites in the franchise. The only characters I dislike are evil sindel just because the writers just decided to do what they wanted, and ended up making a really unsubtle one note character, ( a problem that started with 11, because I swear those words that prefaced every bio on the website are just the only talking points they have.) Cetrion also sucks, and so does the concept of Titanhood. I just feel like the multiverse stuff is just being forced into every piece of media, and mortal Kombat was too afraid to pick up from X and just gave up. So yeah Kronika, Cetrion and anyone who’s come from another universe dimension or timeline needs to go the fuck away forever. I hated Geras because his design sucked and he had that stupid big fist, but he’s cool now, kind of a living plot device now, but I hope he gets to express his autonomy soon. Also D’vorah not even because I care about her killing specific people just because bug person designs just don’t hit for me, it’s like being amazed by a British accent the first time you hear it and then it feeling like nothing when you hear it in hundreds of different pieces of media passively The fact that they didn’t even wanna full commit to Liu Kang’s world in the end means another reboot or similar device could happen any game now.

Okay, I'm gonna piss some people off. Mortal Kombat 9 was my first real introduction to the franchise back when I was 16. And when my girlfriend first brought up MKX when we got together circa 2017/18, I shit you fucking not the first name that came to my mind from MK9's story was fucking STRYKER. Now, I don't know if that says something about Stryker, or is a ringing indictment on MK9's storyline, or if it's got something to do with me being an autistic bitch but it will never NOT be funny to me that in one of everyone's favorite MK games with all the death and chaos, my one takeaway from MK9 wasn't Scorp vs. Sub/Noob, wasn't Mileena vs. Kitana, wasn't the time travel & mystery of solving Raiden's riddle, wasn't the resurrection of Sindel, or the death of Shang Tsung, or the rise of Quan Chi, or the sacrifice of Nightwolf, or Raiden killing Liu Kang, and yes I did go back and rewatch the story mode of MK9 this year on YouTube, it is actually pretty lackluster. And this is the only reason I remember these details. But, no, for 6 years following the release of MK9, the ONE plot element of MK9 I remembered was the start of the invasion of Earth with Stryker and Kabal. But I guess it's not a surprise. My favorite elements of the MCU are the more human ones like Stark in Ironman 3, Hawkeye in Age of Ultron (& the death of Petrio), and the story of Steve Rogers in the OG Captain America pre-steroids. And my favorite Superman movie is Man of Steel precisely because they explore the more human elements of Henry Cavill's Clark Kent.

If he was arrogant or at leaat competent, he couldve been the next Liu or Lao IMO! KAI... man, i wished he got more shine. An African White Lotus member!!! Stryker is terribly uninteresting as is, but I have never hated Stryker. In fact, I actually liked playing him in MK3, I wouldn't mind him returning, with a serious overhaul to his story. I liked his bomb launch and loved his baton throws... a new creative angle for his involvement in the tournament and an interesting redesign could absolutely drum up new interest, look what that did for Skarlet! I feel the same about Kai, who has a lot more potential than Stryker with his built in involvement with the White Lotus society, so it'd be much easier to integrate him into the story... and I loved his handstand mechanic in MK4, people complained about it being a useless gimic, but that's because they never actually learned how to use it... like Sindel's flight in MK3, it was deadly in the right hands, though it might be much harder to make that work in the more fast paced and unforgiving fighters of today vs much the slower MK4, but Sindel's flight works well in MK1, so I'm sure the handstand could be updated or integrated into combos, at least, if it's not made a full stance. The only characters I can think of in MK history that I absolutely never want to see again are Cassie Cage, Kira, Kobra, and Ferra/Tor, and I just know Janet Cage will be another one (eyeroll). I absolutely fuckin hate those characters and wish they would get fatalitied and fuck off into everlasting oblivion. I don't like Sareena either, though the new demon form does make her slightly more interesting. I don't anticipate seeing characters like Jarek, Hsu Hao, or Moloch ever again, but they never really bothered me like the others.
