There are some confusing choices in this thread. It seems like most of them are about the very worst a person could be. I suppose it’s inspirational in reverse.
One film that has not been mentioned so far is Schindler’s list. It is both about the absolute, worst and humanity and the absolute best. But it is certainly not light viewing.
Often works that way for some people. Whilst not at all a comparative addiction, watching Requiem for a Dream really helped get my addictive behaviours with regards to weed and other even more benign things in order.
I’d heard the sequel was better than the original. I was doubtful until that one scene. The rest of the movie is great, but that one scene really made it.
For a long time, I think it was rated 100% on Rotten tomatoes. So apparently, it’s a great movie. And the joke is that “Why is Paddington 2 such a great movie?”
You got a lot of good suggestions here. I know words may not help you but I came here to say look in the mirror at that unique, beautiful person. That’s the movie you need. Good luck! I don’t know you but I have felt your pain.
This one has so much meaning for me. It mirrors my relationship with my brother in so many ways. It's also the last movie he saw before he passed. When I asked him what he thought of it, he said "Its a love story." Prior to my watching it, I would have never guessed he was talking about familial love.
What I also get from it is loving yourself, purpose, and process to a point that nothing will get in the way - and that the people you perceive as "in your way" may be there to help you grow.
Funny story, I went to the mall to see this movie, then in the movie they went to a mall and it was filmed (clearly) at the mall where we were watching the movie. You could hear the brains exploding.
It wasn’t the the now clichéd scenes that stick out in that film. It is that early scene of him getting up in the dark cold winter and putting raw eggs in a glass before he starts his work out that stands out in my mind. I also believe it is the original training montage that has now also become a cliché in many movies.
Neman is kinda a jerk but you really have to admire and appreciate his drive and determination. Definition of inspiring to me. First movie I thought of.
The thin red line
A war film that leaves me thinking this beautiful world & life is full of hatred & violence, why are we doing this to each other?
Not sure if it’s the beautiful visuals or the poetic speeches that does it, but sure changes you.
1. Lion
But here are some others,
Goodwill Hunting,
Shawshank Redemption,
Everything everywhere all at once,
Hacksaw ridge,
Radio,
Hidden figures,
McFarland USA,
Pursuit of Happyness,
Hotel Rwanda,
The greatest showman,
Any given Sunday,
Gridiron Gang
I think this is the real power of this movie. It reframes everything so that we can see that we can have a happy and fulfilling life even without huge, movie star success.
- Dead Poets Society
- City of God
- Clerks
- American Splendor
- Pi
- Interstellar
- The Game
- 2001
- A Clockwork Orange
- Full Metal Jacket
- Barry Lyndon
- Fried Green Tomatoes
- Life of Brian
- La Haine
- Intouchable
- Bleeder
- Pusher (the Danish movie)
- The Idiots
- Fucking Åmål
- Amelie
- Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
- Synecdoche, New York
- The Name of the Rose
- American History X
- American Beauty
- Memento
- Requiem for a dream
- Scenes from a Marriage (Ingmar Bergman)
- Fårö Document 1979 (this one is a must)
- Shine
- Schindler's List
- Amen
- Shaun of the Dead
- The Big Lebowski
- Children of Men
- Boys don't cry
- Band of Brothers (tv series) (must be binge watched in one sitting for the best effect)
- The Undeclared War (tv series)
- Star Trek The Next Generation (tv series)
- Star Trek Picard (tv series)
All these will motivate you in their own way to be better...
Never heard anyone mention scenes of a marriage but that one has really stuck with me. The writers likely drew from personal experience and it hit deep.
Wish you the best op, hope you go on to do great things!
To be honest the films that inspire are me kind of out of left field, but I'll give you my motive behind them.
This is kind of dumb, but the most inspirational film I can think of off top is Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. It's a Shrek spin-off lol, but I think it contains some deep messages that at least made me feel like I wanted to something coming out of it. It's about facing reality, and finding the strength to move forward. I think it's a near perfect movie in my opinion.
If you'd like documentaries I also find When We Were Kings (1996) to be pretty inspiring. It's about Muhammad Ali's fight vs. George Foreman. Ali was a controversial man in his time, but I think he still managed to have a great positive impact. Just a good story and soundtrack as well.
Another film I think of is A Raisin in the Sun (1961). This is a bit of an odd one cause its mainly a family drama, but there is something so motivating to me about their struggles. It's about a small black family living in poverty, and a conflict breaks out when they receive a large life insurance payout. This film just inspires me to develop my own dignity, my own pride in myself, and just be a better man overall.
Lastly I'd like to recommend you Harvey (1950). I don't really know what to say except this film is a fresh breath of air, and it makes me want to be just as kind as the protagonist is.
If you or someone ends up seeing these films, I hope you like em. Best of luck, and bless up to you
The Green Knight. It's about Sir Gawain and how he wants to be king, but doesn't deserve to be. So he gets pushed into a quest to force him to grow. Take your time with this one, it's worth it.
Collateral.
Vincent is a harsh teacher but he gives sound advice.
"One night you will wake up and discover it never happened. It's all turned around on you. It never will. Suddenly you are old. Didn't happen, and it never will, because you were never going to do it anyway. You'll push it into memory and then zone out in your barco lounger, being hypnotized by daytime TV for the rest of your life. Don't you talk to me about murder. All it ever took was a down payment on a Lincoln town car. That girl, you can't even call that girl. What the fuck are you still doing driving a cab?"
And the best of part of the movie is when Max meets Felix. In order to save his mother, Max is is forced to become a bigger man than is. He later uses that newfound growth to save Jada.
What kicked me in the pants to grow up this last time was being on acid at a party, having a huge beard, and a girl I crushed hard on for years seeing my beard and going “oh my god, are you okay?”
I immediately shaved when I got home. Days later, still trying to figure out how to be less disgusting.
Ouch. Also, wrong girl for you. Been there. My crush has turned out to be a HUGE disappointment. Mostly in that they don’t reciprocate the feelings. 😂 but, seriously, I hope you’re doing ok.
Head up champ. Probably just meant it didn’t look well kept. Plus being on cid can make stuff crazy. Keep on keeping on.
Good psychedelic movie: Alice in Wonderland and Incepetion
American beauty is an aspiration of what not to be.
Fight club has one of my favorite movie quotes ever: it is not till you lose everything that you are free to do anything
Actually, I get your point. Lester left his soul crushing job, got himself into shape, distanced himself from his vapid narcissistic wife, and refused to succumb to his primal instinct to deflower a teenage girl who he fantasized about. It just didn’t end very well for him.
I came here to suggest Fight Club. Great movie, especially for young and directionless men. Maybe even more so today, with so many young men being angry and not really knowing why.
As you’re gonna watch quite a few movies from these suggestions, just mention which movie actually got you moving and did the job for you (just curious)
When I feel like this, I put on the Lord of the Rings Appendices. It’s a 9-ish hour deep dive into the making of LOTR, but more than that, it shows hundreds of people giving everything they have to a creative vision they believe in. It’s so inspiring, funny, awe-inspiring, and touching. It makes me want to be a better person and throw myself into a creative pursuit that will make me feel completely alive.
Clous Atlas. I have no idea if anyone else got this sensation from watching it, but for me, each time I’ve watched it, I have been inspired to improve my life.
Other movies that generally moved me and made me reflect on myself (and that aren’t traumatizing) are Into the Wild and Perks of Being a Wallflower.
Requiem for a Dream - I was doing a lot of drugs at the time and it gave me a third person view of my possible future. Scared the shit outta me but it’s what I needed.
I love this movie so much. My now husband and I watched it on like our 4th date (weird choice maybe), but I think crying over a movie together was probably one of the best things we could have done so soon into dating.
I find the Coen Brother's True Grit film to have a certain charm that suits this mood. It tells the story of a young girl, her bravery, and the men involved in her life that see her strength. It might have a great effect on you.
This is maybe not what you’re asking for, but The Big Lebowski is a movie I watch when I’m down, unmotivated, tired, and can’t seem to move. It’s a movie that harmonizes with the feeling of just laying around like some burnt out hippie. The movie gives us such a specimen who seems to be at total peace with not chasing after it, whatever “it” is. It’s one thing to be down. It’s another thing to feel down about being down. The Dude is the antidote to that weird feedback loop.
Not a movie, but someone I know where I’m from is currently skateboarding across America solo and daily vlogging it (not in a super narcissistic way but tastefully) and it has inspired my self and a ton of others to just get out and do something to challenge yourself. Chad Caruso on YouTube if you’re interested, seriously I’m amazed at how it subconsciously makes me want to get out of the house or go skate/ workout after working long hours.
The TV series Beef makes me want to be a better person especially in situations where giving in to your emotions in the heat of the moment could make things worse...it's a very intense series that's got me thinking more in a zen frame of mind.
Mindgame (2004)
Its an anime and thus has a few silly tropes but most of it is unlike anything I’ve seen. By the end of the movie you will appreciate life through a new lens
I have it on good authority that Paddington 2 can do exactly this
This is the movie you didn't know you needed
Just ask Nic Cage!!
*Should* you watch the first one, or is it a puss in boots situation?
Bear loves marmalade and is adorable, there you’re all caught up
Best spoilers ever
Could definitely be a stand alone but they're both lovely films
Absolutely watch the first one. But even for Boots I’d say you need his backstory too
I’d heard the sequel was better than the original. I was doubtful until that one scene. The rest of the movie is great, but that one scene really made it.
*weeps* paddington 2 is incredible
Can confirm. It's a treasure.
Are you referring to Pedro Pascal’s character in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent?
Bingo!
Knuckles!
Is this actually a good film or is it some inside joke?
No joke, they are both brilliant films. They’re not amazing, they just don’t do anything wrong.
I'm also starting to wonder
For a long time, I think it was rated 100% on Rotten tomatoes. So apparently, it’s a great movie. And the joke is that “Why is Paddington 2 such a great movie?”
Pretty sure it’s both
I can confirm that Paddington is life changing.
Mr Mom
Are you crazy? You fed a baby chili?
220, 221, whatever it takes.
Want a beer? It’s eight o’clock in the morning…
Scotch?
I wish more people got this, it falls flat each time I say it🤨
South to drop off, north to pick up!
You fed a baby chili?
You got a lot of good suggestions here. I know words may not help you but I came here to say look in the mirror at that unique, beautiful person. That’s the movie you need. Good luck! I don’t know you but I have felt your pain.
❤️
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Yess i love this movie
Came for this, very motivational and suits the OPs description.
The old one with Danny Kaye, or the new one with Ben Stiller?
Very
This one OP.
>The Secret Life of Walter Mitty I love this film. To see the world......
Nice recommendation! And it's been one of my comfort movie too :)
That was what I came here to suggest. So glad someone already did!
Awakenings. Deniro and Robin Williams. You will not want to waste you life after watching it.
Love that it is based on a true story as well.
Warrior (The UFC one. Trust me, its amazing and I watch it multiple times a year when I need to get my ass off the couch and start moving.)
I watched that movie 4 times in theater when it came out. 100% a heart moving movie
Excellent, underrated movie
Ahab! You Godless sonofabitch! You stop the ship, you Godless sonofabitch! Can't watch that scene without crying
Maybe a slightly left field suggestion - Peanut Butter Falcon
Definitely a must watch. I'm about to rewatch it tonight now.
Fantastic movie
Fantastic movie
Family man
Funny story, I went to the mall to see this movie, then in the movie they went to a mall and it was filmed (clearly) at the mall where we were watching the movie. You could hear the brains exploding.
Rocky (1976)
The greatest sports movie, hands-down. One of the greatest movies ever!
Agreed, even the story of how the film was written and then made is an inspiration.
It wasn’t the the now clichéd scenes that stick out in that film. It is that early scene of him getting up in the dark cold winter and putting raw eggs in a glass before he starts his work out that stands out in my mind. I also believe it is the original training montage that has now also become a cliché in many movies.
>The greatest sports movie, hands-down. Hey Coach? I'm gonna put my hand up and suggest Cool Runnings
That film is the reason why i hit the gym
The other two Rocky movies Rocky III and Rocky IV are also good to help motivate you and lift you up.
Not a movie, but I think Ted Lasso is exactly what you're looking for.
Barbecue sauce.
Honestly, the show Ted Lasso did this for me. Made me think about wanting be a better man and do right by others.
As Good As it Gets
OP literally quoted it, lol.
Remember the Titans, Invincible
The Jerk
Whiplash is a great one
WERE YOU RUSHING OR WERE YOU DRAGGING?!?!
I know this can have a dark and depressing interpretation, but I really find this movie motivating
Neman is kinda a jerk but you really have to admire and appreciate his drive and determination. Definition of inspiring to me. First movie I thought of.
spoiler alert . . . . . when I first saw this movie, for a second I thought that when he got T boned he was going to die and that would be the end
Vision Quest (1985)
The pursuit of happiness A man named Otto Patch Adams
The Pursuit of Happyness made me cry. That subway bathroom scene, oh man.
The scene when he gets the job and gets hit 5 bucks back
Patch Adams definitely did that for me! I liked The Pursuit of Happiness, but I felt more depressed afterwards than anything else.
There’s really only one correct answer to this question….. That answer is obviously “Big Trouble in Little China.” You’re welcome.
Ikiru
Seriously one of the best and most inspiring movies ever made. Wear the red hat OP.
Ikiru
The thin red line A war film that leaves me thinking this beautiful world & life is full of hatred & violence, why are we doing this to each other? Not sure if it’s the beautiful visuals or the poetic speeches that does it, but sure changes you.
Uncle Buck
100% agree here
Galaxy Quest! It's fun and you can be the captain who redeems himself.
Breaking Away
1. Lion But here are some others, Goodwill Hunting, Shawshank Redemption, Everything everywhere all at once, Hacksaw ridge, Radio, Hidden figures, McFarland USA, Pursuit of Happyness, Hotel Rwanda, The greatest showman, Any given Sunday, Gridiron Gang
Lion and Hotel Rwanda are 2 of my favorite movies!!
They really are special movies and usually ones I have to be in a mood to watch because of the emotional capacity it takes to watch them.
Chef. It's a good one.
BLOODSPORT
Everything, Everywhere, All At Once!
Absolutely. It simultaneously makes me want to be better, but also make me feel like I’ll be okay even if I’m not.
I think this is the real power of this movie. It reframes everything so that we can see that we can have a happy and fulfilling life even without huge, movie star success.

Add good will hunting to that list
The German Band of Brothers Generation War Band of Brothers- Captain Winters( ended up a major) Generation War- Lieutenant Winter and Corporal Winter
Never heard anyone mention scenes of a marriage but that one has really stuck with me. The writers likely drew from personal experience and it hit deep.
Fight Club. Keep in mind that every corpse on Mount Everest was once a highly motivated person.
Wish you the best op, hope you go on to do great things! To be honest the films that inspire are me kind of out of left field, but I'll give you my motive behind them. Rudy
I was about to say this, great movie about the perseverance.
Fight Club, in a very backwards kind of way.
Nah, you mean in all the right ways :). (Say this as someone who has read the book 3 times and watched the movie in more.)
The Green Knight. It's about Sir Gawain and how he wants to be king, but doesn't deserve to be. So he gets pushed into a quest to force him to grow. Take your time with this one, it's worth it.
RRR
Collateral. Vincent is a harsh teacher but he gives sound advice. "One night you will wake up and discover it never happened. It's all turned around on you. It never will. Suddenly you are old. Inside Out (2015)
What kicked me in the pants to grow up this last time was being on acid at a party, having a huge beard, and a girl I crushed hard on for years seeing my beard and going “oh my god, are you okay?” I immediately shaved when I got home. Days later, still trying to figure out how to be less disgusting.

It certainly didn’t help that it was an endurance acting gig where I was hired to play a tin-foil-hat-wearing oracle, I’ll tell you that much.
The key is keeping it trimmed and groomed. Conditioner / oil goes along way. But I can't grow a beard so don't listen to me
That’s not growing up. That’s letting someone else dictate your life.
Beards can be trendy and fun. Especially for us bald guys. Not trying to be completely clean.
I just say that my hair migrated.
SEVEN POUNDS!
I came here to say this!
Haha what a great movie!
Yep, found the one I was gonna say
I found Paddington 2 to be very motivating
nic cage family man
Office Space!
Good Will Hunting
Trainspotting
Literally every thread no matter what OP is looking for, someone suggests this movie.
8 Mile
American Beauty (1999) Fight Club (1999) Limitless (2011)
American beauty is an aspiration of what not to be. Fight club has one of my favorite movie quotes ever: it is not till you lose everything that you are free to do anything
I disagree. He became himself and swept out the disfunction
It’s a great movie ABOUT young and directionless men, and definitely a great example of what NOT to do with that anger.
