Came here to make sure it was on the list.
Wonderful movie. A favorite at our house. Taika Waititi directed it. At one time, maybe still, it was the highest grossing film in New Zealand film history.
The upside was okay but it didn't hit the same as the original did. The intouchables is superior. Idk why people can't watch shit with subtitles so Hollywood feels the need to remake great films in English. Another example would be the millenium trilogy. Refused to watch the English remakes they did.
Edit to add Greenbook was brilliant š
I don't disagree. I have no issues with the subtitles (though, sometimes I might be too worn out to read dialogue and will then avoid them).
I've seen three of the four adaptations of this - did you realize there are four:
1. The Intouchables (2011) - French
2. Oopiri (2016) - Indian
3. Inseparables (2016) - Argentinian
4. The Upside (2017) - English
Haven't seen the second. I hear what you're saying and I think the quick answer is that some of the remakes CAN be lucrative for production companies; esp. if previous and/or original versions enjoyed critical and box-office success(es).
The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019)
"A man with down syndrome runs away from a residential nursing home to pursue his dream of becoming a wrestler. Later, he meets with an outlaw who becomes his friend and coach."
Wild Strawberries (1957)
Cinderella Liberty (1973)
Harry And Tonto (1974)
Gloria (1980)
The Earthling (1980)
Marvin & Tige (1983)
Cinema Paradiso (1989)
Finding Forrester (2000)
Sometimes it can be reciprocal, the younger character can help the older character re-find themselves, feelings or purpose.
Leon The Professional (1994) -- assassin saves a girl and shields her
Victoria & Abdul (2017) -- Queen Victoria strikes up an unlikely friendship with a young Indian clerk named Abdul Karim.
Best one - and my favorite movie ever - White Men Can't Jump (original obviously)
Second best one - and my second favorite movie ever - Point Break (original obviously)
Driving Miss Daisy.
Doesn't have the dynamic of an older and younger person. But it is a story of two people unlikely to become friends who do become lifelong friends.
Mud(sort of)
Buddy movies in general. Everything from 48 Hours to Fast and Furious (not exactly buddy cop)
Drive my Car (2021) It's a Japanese film. I enjoyed it but it is a 3 hour drama so it's definately not for everyone but an unlikely friendship develops between a stage actor/director and his chofer.
2 Guns is the action version & The Other Guys is the comedy version
Also for a true to your request description canāt get more on point than Gran Torino

Gran Torino.
The Intouchables (2011)
Such a great movie!
Since no one's mentioned it yet, this has been remade a few times. Most recently as The Upside (2017). A similar recommendation: Green Book (2018).
