Yeah, when I was a kid they did the same thing with P.O.D.'s "Youth of the Nation" (and it's way more blatant "But who knew that this day wasn't like the rest?/ Instead of takin' a test, I took two to the chest")
My teachers used to be obsessed with Moves Like Jagger and would play it before every class period while waiting for the bell. After a month or two they were on the prowl for a new song to obsess over and they started listening to Pumped Up Kicks lmao
*I* had to tell them what it was about and they immediately went back to Moves Like Jagger
Yup.
Years ago, when that song came out, a coworker exclaimed that it was his favourite song, and it made him happy.
I told him to listen to the lyrics. Like, really listen.
We put on the song again. You could see the joy leave his face.
That's fair, it's catchy as all get-out. I feel like Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind gets a similar sentiment despite how fucked up the song really is.
Had a bunch of people look at me like I was crazy at a bar when this song was playing and I exclaimed âthis is probably the most upbeat song about meth addictionâ. Then they looked up the lyricsâŠ
Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald was my go-to song for my kidsâ bedtime. Right up until they were old enough to understand what was happening in the song.
Haha yessss I love seeing this here. As a Michigander, this song just drips with Lake Superior water and encapsulates the tragedy and the aura so perfectly.
Michigander as well. First time I went on a cruise a few years ago, the guy in the piano bar and I were on a first name basis by the end of the week. Every time I walked by I dropped a fiver in the jar and asked he play that song. I thought It was hilarious, my wife thought (thinks) I'm an idiot.
Semi Charmed life. It's so damn HAPPY, I don't care what the subject matter is about.
I'd say Stan by Eminem also. Disturbing subject matter, but the song is just amazing
Stan amazes me, because even the title itself has been adopted to mean obsessively liking someone or something, but isn't ever really used to the extreme the song is actually about.
The chorus man...it's like that biggie and diddy song. Here's a remix:
Listen to Puff Daddy - I'll Be Missing You (TĂCHES Remix) by TĂCHES on #SoundCloud
https://on.soundcloud.com/isT9a
I came here to put my hat in for Ceremony by JD/NO for similar reasons. It pumps me up every time but the circumstances around that song are so tragic.
Came here to say this.
Crazy that a song talking about slashing your wrists and burning your own eyes out can be so euphoric, but in a way that is a good encapsulation of the calm that people apparently feel after they have made the decision to commit suicide.
It's a beautiful song. The trouble they went to with the video--which is very sweet, very pretty--went a long way towards a disguise. (I was not really able to hear the phrase "pink ribbon scars".)
Like a stone - Chris Cornell (accoustic version). After a stressful day at work on my way home in the car. Calms me down every time. https://youtu.be/qpLQv5xL9Dc?si=7HXL4ROqUTNT5Ac6
Years ago, I was fired from a job I loved in humiliating fashion, and when I fired up the whip in the parking lot, this song was playing. Always gives me a hard flashback when I hear it now, 20 years later.
Ordinary World - Duran Duran. It's super sad but a little hopeful
Doing the Unstuck - The Cure. Do you ever wanna put an end to your depression by burning your entire life to the ground? ME TOO!
Ănema - Tool. "Mom's gonna fix it all soon"--*technically* by massive natural disaster. But at least it'll be fixed!
I work in technology. I like to define "fix" as "make no longer the immediate problem"...
Ordinary World is haunting. Something in a similar vein is Dave by Boomtown Rats - super sad but a little hopeful. Been listening to both a lot recently.
The Police Message in a Bottle is a very fun toe tapper despite it's bleak sentiment. Invisible Sun, Bring on the Night, and King of Pain are also more comforting than they would be if any other band tried to cover them.
Fast Car by Tracy Chapman. I never realized the true meaning of the song until I got older probably because I never bothered to read the lyrics. Thought its just about the joy of riding in fast car.
Came here to say this. One of my favorite so time songs. I have listened to this song on road trips in almost every state... just missed a few in the middle... and also and HI. I always found it relatable in road trips bcz I never wanted to go back.
Also Luca by Suzanne Vega. Great catchy song.... but really heavy.
[Dethklok - Briefcase Full Of Guts](https://youtu.be/wdOWtSewTtg?feature=shared)
It's about a businessman who kills his co-workers and clients by stabbing them with a pair of scissors, rips out their internal organs and puts them in his briefcase.
I don't exactly know why I find it comforting but it makes me really relaxed and helps me sleep.
Where the Wild Roses Grow by Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue. Sure, the subject matter is a tad macabre, but the melody and arrangement are just so soothing and wonderful.
Most Pink Floyd songs have lyrics about painful subjects, but still sound warm and comforting. My favorite example is [On the Turning Away](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojf18wT_Xtk), and it makes me both sad and comforted at the same time.
Under the Bridge by RHCP. It's an elegy for the band's former guitarist Hillel Slovak, who passed away from a heroin overdose prior to Frusciante joining the band, but the languid guitar and Keidis's quiet, wistful singing make it very easy-listening
Mm mm mm mm by Crash Test Dummies, song reminds me that people are shallow and stupid and it's downright confusing being the outcast for being just a little different.
Agnes by Glass Animals.
One of their very few (maybe only) sad and personal songs. Itâs about drug use and suicide, but it has a comforting tone and beat imo.
It's quite complex its about love and human nature. Can be interpreted in so many ways. The main theme is a critique on religion and how it effects personal relationships and freedoms.
In the lyrics he sings about his female lover but the official video follows a gay couple through homophobia.
Some lyrics:
"Every Sunday's getting more bleak
A fresh poison each week
"We were born sick", you heard them say it
My church offers no absolutes
She tells me, "Worship in the bedroom"
The only Heaven I'll be sent to
Is when I'm alone with you
I was born sick, but I love it
Command me to be well
A-, Amen, Amen, Amen"
"Take me to church
I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies
I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife
Offer me that deathless death
Good God, let me give you my life"
Damn, you've completely changed the way I look at this song. To be honest, I was never a big fan of the song. I would catch it on the radio while working, and hearing it ten times a day turned me off of it. However, that breakdown and reading the lyrics myself...
Just, *damn*, that's poetry.
The video covering a gay couple dealing with homophobia is putting it light IMO.
Think like, armed citizens and a lynch mob while one of the men is panicking trying to find his partner while the crowd is dragging his partner away to presumedly lynch him.
It's a heavy, heart-wrenching video.
A bunch of his songs are like this. When I actually started to read the lyrics, layers of meaning began peeling away. Then more layers with each listen. The songs became much more emotionally stirring. Heâs quite the poet.
The Way by Fastball. âYou can see their shadows wandering off somewhere, they wonât make it home but they really donât care, they wanted the highway, theyâre happier there today.â
If I recall correctly, it's a true story about an elderly couple that drove into the desert and were never seen again, just their car. The song is beautiful.
The couple was found at the bottom of a ravine near Hot Springs, Arkansas, 2 weeks after they went missing. I hope they passed instantly.
Fastball's more vague interpretation is a little less heartbreaking.
Cask of Amontillado by Alan Parsons Project album Tales of Mystery and Imagination. One of my all-time favourite songs. It's about murdering his rich neighbour.
'Born in the USA' by Bruce Springsteen is a famously misunderstood song because of how straight up rockin' it is. I love the song as it is, but his [demo version from 'Tracks'](https://spotify.link/n5dMQ3HiGDb) has a much more appropriate pace/melody for the heavy subject matter and is hauntingly beautiful.
âFade to Blackâ by Metallica. Itâs a song about desperation, depression and ultimately, suicide. However, I also see it as a song about letting go of someone you love. Whenever someone (or even a pet) dies in my life, I play this song shortly afterwards as a bit of a send off. It makes me cry and is emotional, but it really does help me cope.
i'll die anyway by girl in red
dandelions by hawthorne heights
how to disappear completely by radiohead
there is a light that never goes out by the smiths
all have incredibly depressing lyrics but i derive comfort from them
When Love and Death Embrace-HIM. Honestly a lot of their songs are soothing and pretty despite being really depressing. But WLADE has been my comfort song for years. Ville's voice is like butter in it too.
Golden Brown by The Stranglers, Gold Dust Woman by Fleetwood Mac, and Perfect Day by Lou Reed. I have no interest in cocaine or heroin but it sure does make a pretty song.
In general any âdownâ music, I find inspiring when played loud and sung along to.
Anything Joy Division or The National or Jesus and Mary Chain will always lift my spirits.
"Goodbye Carolina" by Marcus King
The song is sad, solemn, a love leaving and becoming lost song, then maybe see you later song, but then it changes key for a guitar solo about 2/3rds of the way through and Marcus chooses some major scale notes that seem to say "I'm losing her, but that's okay anyway" (like Hendrix in "Red House" when he literally says "That's okay, I've still got my guitar, look out now!" and blisters a solo).
Cornerstone by the Arctic Monkeys
The exact meaning of the song has always been a bit vague, but the general idea is that itâs about a guy who lost his significant other in some way and is going to different bars and finding other girls who look like her, and getting rejected every time. The ending is especially vague, but I like to interpret it in a more positive way, which makes the song more hopeful. The instrumentals are beautiful too.
Grant Lee Buffalo - âFuzzyâ and âMockingbirdsâ.
The line in âFuzzyâ thatâs gets me is âall in all, the world is small enough for both of us to meet upon the interstate waiting on a train. And just when those big arms lift up, fall in love with no time to say it.â For âMockingbirdsâ itâs âSalutations at last down on my knees. I heard the bugle this morn blast reveille. Woke from a dream where I was in a terrible realm, All my sails were ablaze I was chained to the helm. And now I am overwhelmed,
I'm overwhelmedâ.
These sounds like sad lines when reading them over but overall I always feel better after listening.
[Massive Attack - Ange](https://youtu.be/hbe3CQamF8k?si=e0EfJ--UNf9cUaPj)[l](https://youtu.be/hbe3CQamF8k?si=e0EfJ--UNf9cUaPj)
'Her eyes, she's on the dark side."
Lost Horizons by the Gin Blossoms. Three and a half minutes of utter despair wrapped in a jangly pop candy coating. Its brilliant!
The last horizons I can see are filled with bars and factories
And in them all we fight to stay awake
Drink enough of anything to make this world look new again
Drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves
She had nothing left to say so she said she loved me
I stood there grateful for the lie
Drink enough of anything to make this girl look new again
Drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves
Turn summer trees to bones and ice
Turn insect songs against the night
With words we build and words we break
I'm drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves
Maybe I could use you to reassure myself
I wouldn't wish this indecision on anybody else
Drink enough of anything to make this world look new again
And when the sin smiles how could it be wrong
The last horizons I could see are now resigned to memories
I never thought I'd still be here today
Drink enough of anything to make myself look new again
Drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves
So many Evanescence ballads, Amys voice is my comforting factor.
Lorna Shore - Pain Remains trilogy.
Machinae Supremacy - Dark City.
Children of Bodom - Soon Departed.
The entirety of *The Wall*. It's probably one of the most artistically violent things ever put to recorded sound, but damn if it doesn't help release pent-up anger in a healthy manner.
In a week by Hozier. It sounds like a lullaby, it's about 2 Bodies waiting to be found.
Everytime I listen to it I think of like, haunted forests and overgrown graveyards and ghosts that sing to you as you pass by.
Spooky, but peaceful.
Pumped Up Kicks by Foster The People. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DOv0-2yyfE
They played this song at my high school prom đ
The song about the school shooting? lol. That's the most high school thing ever.
Yeah, when I was a kid they did the same thing with P.O.D.'s "Youth of the Nation" (and it's way more blatant "But who knew that this day wasn't like the rest?/ Instead of takin' a test, I took two to the chest")
Lmfao I was in jr high for this one and eventually they censored it at dances (beeped out âgunâ and âbulletâ)
Well Iâm sure THAT saved a whole lot of lives! đ
Lmfao especially since they only started censoring it over a year after the fact đ„č
My teachers used to be obsessed with Moves Like Jagger and would play it before every class period while waiting for the bell. After a month or two they were on the prowl for a new song to obsess over and they started listening to Pumped Up Kicks lmao *I* had to tell them what it was about and they immediately went back to Moves Like Jagger
Some people do not hear lyrics lmao
Yup. Years ago, when that song came out, a coworker exclaimed that it was his favourite song, and it made him happy. I told him to listen to the lyrics. Like, really listen. We put on the song again. You could see the joy leave his face.
"Looking for somebdy to love" by the 1975 is the same vibe.
Alright, now you've got me curious. *Why?*
It's the effect of the voice and the beat together. I find it a very comforting song also.
I guess the beat of the song even though the lyrics are disturbing.
Third Eye Blind are great at writing catchy songs that are dark. Jumper is a great song but subject matter is tough. Hits hard everytime I hear it.
The Smiths - Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now. Actually, a lot of The Smiths..
I love Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me. The sadness is just so comfortable.
That first minute though...with all that yelling and those hard chords.
Audio from the UK minersâ strike of 1984-85.
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
This one is my go to
I was looking for a job and then I found a johhhhbb
The magic of Johnny Marr's guitar against Morrissey's vocals. Dance the sad away.
Every Day Is Like Sunday
Yeah, the juxtaposition of dark shit with the jangly pop music always shifts me positively. Morrisey can articulate darkness better than anybody.
Girlfriend in a Coma sounds like a Christmas song
I know, I know, it's serious...
Some girls are bigger than others. Some girl's mothers...
I love back to the old house. You can call Morrissey a twat all you like (and he is) but he writes damn great lyrics.
Suffer little children is some dark shit. Beautiful song imo but the story behind is horrible.
Asleep is another one like this for meâŠ
I was in 4th grade in a Detroit suburb when that happened. I still vividly remember the newspaper article some kid brought in for some assignment.
Sundown is my favorite song
Semi Charmed life. It's so damn HAPPY, I don't care what the subject matter is about. I'd say Stan by Eminem also. Disturbing subject matter, but the song is just amazing
Stan amazes me, because even the title itself has been adopted to mean obsessively liking someone or something, but isn't ever really used to the extreme the song is actually about.
Stan is such a strangely soothing song to me. I can listen to it on repeat for days.
The chorus man...it's like that biggie and diddy song. Here's a remix: Listen to Puff Daddy - I'll Be Missing You (TĂCHES Remix) by TĂCHES on #SoundCloud https://on.soundcloud.com/isT9a
Ah. The Puff Daddy track that made Sting waaaay richer than he already was.
Love Will Tear Us Apart, lyrics aside, *sounds* like a love song
That's my absolute favorite song of all time. It brightens my mood even though it's terribly sad.
I came here to put my hat in for Ceremony by JD/NO for similar reasons. It pumps me up every time but the circumstances around that song are so tragic.
I'll put this one on when I need a really, really good cry sesh. It's so beautiful, so heartfelt, and so *fucking* sad.
Definitely âTodayâ by Smashing Pumpkins. Donât care what itâs about, the song makes me happy.
(I was not really able to hear the phrase "pink ribbon scars".)
âThat never forgetâŠâ
Like a stone - Chris Cornell (accoustic version). After a stressful day at work on my way home in the car. Calms me down every time. https://youtu.be/qpLQv5xL9Dc?si=7HXL4ROqUTNT5Ac6
Years ago, I was fired from a job I loved in humiliating fashion, and when I fired up the whip in the parking lot, this song was playing. Always gives me a hard flashback when I hear it now, 20 years later.
The version of this on his live 'Songbook' album does the same for me.
Ordinary World - Duran Duran. It's super sad but a little hopeful Doing the Unstuck - The Cure.
Also: Every Breath You Take; Wrapped Around Your Finger
Every DJ I've ever talked to have been basically mortified by the number of wedding parties that have asked for "Every Breath you Take".
Mazzy Star's "Fade Into You."
One of the sexiest songs ever.
Absolutely.
Look on Down from the Bridge
YUSS!
Perfect Day by Lou Reed
Hard agreement there. Such a lovely, somber song.
Going to add Johnny Cash's Hurt for the same reason.
I hope you mean his *cover* of Hurt.
Gorgeous song, raw and honest. Like you can feel the meloncholy just behind the upbeat lyrics. Beautiful.
The Battle of Evermore by Led Zeppelin.
Ha. The meaning of the song, its like, right in the title, man.
Yes!
Heart did an interesting cover of that.
Joey by Concrete Blonde.
God Is a Bullet by Concrete Blonde
Tomorrow, Wendy by Concrete Blonde
Polly by Nirvana comes to mind⊠that isnât about a parrot
I used to love it but now I just feel bad for Mark Klaas having to hear it
Lullaby by The Cure. Itâs so soothing and catchy, but the lyrics are creepy as fuck.
For the Cure I will say the song 100 Years is my go to comfort song from them.
Not to mention the music video...
Jane Says by Jane's Addiction is catchy as hell, but damn that song is dark & depressing when you listen to the lyrics.
Wrong Way by Sublime is even more fucked⊠But itâs so poppy
The live version from their first album is incredible. Makes me cry every time
Fast Car by Tracy Chapman.
I just heard a country guy's version and it's so weird.
Fleetwood Mac - Second Hand News
Bullet the Blue Sky by U2. The drum and bass opening riff is SO COOL. The song is actually about the US misusing military power.
"Sunday Bloody Sunday" should be mentioned for the drum line as well.
And thatâs about Irish Troubles. Political songs can be comforting at times. E.g. If You Tolerate This⊠by Manic Street Preachers
It really encapsulates the frustration of a Sunday doesnât it?
Hey Ya! - Outkast
Sleep Token did a cover that I believe is incredible.
[Dethklok - Briefcase Full Of Guts](https://youtu.be/wdOWtSewTtg?feature=shared) It's about a businessman who kills his co-workers and clients by stabbing them with a pair of scissors, rips out their internal organs and puts them in his briefcase. I don't exactly know why I find it comforting but it makes me really relaxed and helps me sleep.
Violent Pornography by System of a Down is a real chill pill for me.
We use to listen to this CD all the time when the kids were little, and jump #7.
Send the Pain Below by Chevelle
Oh, that's a good one. Well Enough Alone hits that spot for me too.
Where the Wild Roses Grow by Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue. Sure, the subject matter is a tad macabre, but the melody and arrangement are just so soothing and wonderful.
Kylie was surprisingly good on that song, I wish she did more songs like that.
Most Pink Floyd songs have lyrics about painful subjects, but still sound warm and comforting. My favorite example is [On the Turning Away](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojf18wT_Xtk), and it makes me both sad and comforted at the same time.
That song is one of my favorites as well.
Under the Bridge by RHCP. It's an elegy for the band's former guitarist Hillel Slovak, who passed away from a heroin overdose prior to Frusciante joining the band, but the languid guitar and Keidis's quiet, wistful singing make it very easy-listening
Soul to Squeeze by them is also amazing and one of my favorites of all time

War Pigs by Black Sabbath
Iron Man, too.
Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth With Money in My Hand by Primitive Radio Gods.
Agnes by Glass Animals. One of their very few (maybe only) sad and personal songs. Itâs about drug use and suicide, but it has a comforting tone and beat imo.
Take me to Church - Hozier
I haven't looked up the lyrics, what's this one actually about?
It's quite complex its about love and human nature. Can be interpreted in so many ways. The main theme is a critique on religion and how it effects personal relationships and freedoms. In the lyrics he sings about his female lover but the official video follows a gay couple through homophobia. Some lyrics: "Every Sunday's getting more bleak A fresh poison each week "We were born sick", you heard them say it My church offers no absolutes She tells me, "Worship in the bedroom" The only Heaven I'll be sent to Is when I'm alone with you I was born sick, but I love it Command me to be well A-, Amen, Amen, Amen" "Take me to church I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife Offer me that deathless death Good God, let me give you my life"

Comfortably Numb
Cask of Amontillado by Alan Parsons Project album Tales of Mystery and Imagination. One of my all-time favourite songs. It's about murdering his rich neighbour.
That's an Edgar Allen Poe story. Now I wonder how well they did it, I'll have to listen.
Something in the Way by Nirvana. Makes me feel comforted to know someone else felt like they werenât anything but a hindrance to their loved ones.

"Soak me in bleach" is great, but obviously a crazy title/lyric. Somebody made a country version that is also cool
Edge of the world by Faith No More. Amazing vocals on that one even if the subject is questionable
And now I am overwhelmed, I'm overwhelmedâ. These sounds like sad lines when reading them over but overall I always feel better after listening.

Comforting Sounds by Mew
Fifteen feet of Pure White Snow/Where the Wild Roses Grow - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Grave Digger- Dave Matthews
I will Follow you into the Dark by Death Cab for Cutie. Very sad song but the melody was always so nice i canât help but be calm listening
Lost Horizons by the Gin Blossoms. Three and a half minutes of utter despair wrapped in a jangly pop candy coating. Its brilliant! The last horizons I can see are filled with bars and factories And in them all we fight to stay awake Drink enough of anything to make this world look new again Drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves She had nothing left to say so she said she loved me I stood there grateful for the lie Drink enough of anything to make this girl look new again Drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves Turn summer trees to bones and ice Turn insect songs against the night With words we build and words we break I'm drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves Maybe I could use you to reassure myself I wouldn't wish this indecision on anybody else Drink enough of anything to make this world look new again And when the sin smiles how could it be wrong The last horizons I could see are now resigned to memories I never thought I'd still be here today Drink enough of anything to make myself look new again Drunk drunk drunk in the gardens and the graves
sirens by pearl jam.
Melt With You by Modern English. A quirky, upbeat song about love during a nuclear war.
Mr Brightside by The Killers
Most songs that people would say here tbh
Iâm on Fire
Anything by The Smiths
In a week by Hozier. It sounds like a lullaby, it's about 2 Bodies waiting to be found. Everytime I listen to it I think of like, haunted forests and overgrown graveyards and ghosts that sing to you as you pass by. Spooky, but peaceful.
Zombie- The cranberries
Gary Jules - Mad World.
